Logan Tom did a lot of impressive things as a volleyball player at Highland High, Stanford, and as an Olympian. However, her appeal as a Utah local hero has waned considerably because of her decisions to use her sexuality rather than athletic prowess to garner attention and earn money. As outlined in a recent DesNews column about female athletes exploiting their good looks for cash, a la Anna Kournikova, Amanda Beard, etc, Logan Tom has also posed semi- or fully nude for magazines and calendars along with other US female Olympians. What are impressionable young women who used to look up to people like Logan supposed to do with such mixed signals? Should they demand respect for their abilities as athletes, or should they blatantly flaunt their bodies in provocative ways to attract attention and make some extra $? Women's athletics was supposed to empower women, but more and more female athletes are more than willing to bare their all and be nothing but sex symbols who happen to play sports. I thought we had progressed beyond this as women, but Logan Tom and her sem-nude posings signal the opposite. Logan, keep your clothes on and be a role model.
LOL. You can get off your soapbox now.
