The Chinese Olympics is a communist showcase. A nation of oppression and torture and basic violations of human rights. Red China has threatened to use nuclear weapons against the US many times and even within the past year.

Why are we even there?

I think this Olympics is having too much politics, mostly used by Chinese government.
As a Chinese-American, I lived in mainland China for over 33 years, and still have a lot of connections back so knowing what's going on right now over mainland China. I would like to say, THIS OLYMPICS IS NOT GOOD FOR MOST OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE! My reasons:
1)Financially, the Chinese government used a lot of money for the BIG Face-Projects, they are not helping Chinese people, they are providing much more opportunities for the corrupted government officers. How many people lived outside of Beijing Shanghai TianJing (and a few others)? Over more than 1000 millions, they are not benefited from anything called Olympics (the only thing they are enjoying is watch Olympics on TV).
2)Chinese government used this Olympics as a excuse to suppress the politic dissents to enhance the most corrupted government over the world. It's a shame to even mention the word "Unity". Ask yourself? How many "Ming Gong" (labor construction workers, former farmers) they are driven out of BeiJing? It's a shame!
So if not now---when?? | 9:12 a.m. Aug. 8, 2008
So the Olympics aren't the time or place for focusing on China's human rights violations. Humm...if China has stupidly ignored and failed to use the most perfect, face-saving, good-will engendering, praise-would-have-been-heaped-upon-them-by-the-world time of the run-up to the Olympics, to get out of Tibet, just when can we expect that to happen?? The Chinese keep trying to convince the world they are all about love and peace and harmony. Rings pretty hollow.

Chinese people whether in mainland China or here in the states are afraid of speaking their mind in public. Although they know of the troubles in their homeland, they are afraid of speaking out for being snitched out by their neighbors or even friends. Political dissent is punished by sending them or their loved ones through many kinds of reform like reform through manual labor or through reform of thought. Nobody is safe in China because the country is in the grip of the politburo members of the Chinese Communist State party. The fruits of the labor of the Olympic will only benefit the senior official of the Communist party. According to Mao's little red book, the fruit is to be shared by the masses but it is consumed by the few. China is living in a contradiction. Few places in China are developed but about 800 million people are living in Poverty. About 20 million are in Prisons which include political activists and Tibetans. Ordinary Chinese need to be bold to speak up for what is happening in their country. Look towards people like Wei Jingsheng for hope.

Those who complain that there are too much politics in the games are those who are adding to the problem. This is one event every 4 years where the world, if those who look to find a fault in every action contain their arrogance, can unite and love the thrill of supporting our youth, and fellow countrymen and women as they represent us in the exciting athletic competition. Why do we have to ask "why are we even there?" We are there to enjoy the quest of humanity to be "swifter, higher, and stronger" than ever before. The excitement in the eyes of these athletes as they accomplish their goals is a shining example to all as we strive to achieve our own. Support your country, get together with your family and friends, and enjoy the games. By doing so, the citizens of the world can send a message that the politics are ignored by us and instead, we merely want to enjoy a thrilling, intense competition for every gold medal.

I have created a paradise in which infanticide is rampant, religious devotees are imprisoned, genocide is exported to Africa, Tibet is crushed, and best of all, Americans talk a talk about not liking it, but dare not actually do anything but beg to be our friends!

Don't want politics to enter the stage during the Olympics? Then may we suggest you get your act together, as a country, BEFORE you apply to host the Olympics. Then no one will have any political ammo during the Games, or skeletons hiding in the closet, waiting to be exposed--and then we won't all have to listen to the "oh, can't we all just get along and let the athletes compete together in love" refranes.

I am sick of hearing this, when I was in college in the late 90's I had a Mainland Chinese girl in a few of my classes. She went back to China, because she missed it! Her family lives HERE! She was Cute as a button, and she told me if you just live your life, and mind your own business, China is a WONDERFUL PLACE TO LIVE! A Communist Showcase? How do you figure? It is a exhibition to the world of Sport and Sportsmanship and Love and Competition. All the protesters ruin it! If they didn't have to spend so much on oppressing all the OUT OF COUNTRY PROTESTERS think of how much more money they would have to feed their own people! I am so sick and tired of people getting down on China. I love China, but more importantly I am a United States Citizen, and HERE You and I have the freedom to express our own opinion no matter how right or wrong it is, even though I would like to quell some of the opinions, I respect the right to express them. So if your in China, "SHUT UP YOU!" LetTheGamesBegin!!!

The Peking Games echo the great Berlin Games of 1936.

That also was a showcase for a dictatorship wanting to look good in the eyes of the world. There, too, those who didn't have a direct interest in the Games were poorer for it (most notably the Jews, whose property was confiscated - parallels of which can be found in this year's showcase).

There, too, being locked up was among the least of the consequences for speaking up if you didn't agree with the Party bosses.

The seats weren't filled by Chinese because of their growing middle class, they have been filled by free tickets to volunteers (all of the Chinese wearing the yellow shirts in the stands) and by the Chinese who were allowed to buy tickets at RMB 50-150 ($7-21)... many of them have subsequently sold them to foreigners at huge profits. Mr Ha needs to come to Beijing and see what is actually happening.
