There is no doubt much of the animosity toward Mormons in the 19th century was well-deserved given their practices of aggressively proselytizing for converts, telling them to leave where they were and come to Zion, and polygamy. Taken together, from outside the faith these are a recipe for The Mormons are coming to steal our wives and daughters! I can completely understand how they would feel that way! LDS Church members and leaders today share similar animosity toward the FLDS and other polygamist groups.
