I'm so glad I don't live in Utah. To all of the reasonable folks in Utah who have to put up with the extreme right's simplistic observations and logical fallacies (the "Official Democrat Energy Plan" is drive small cars and wait for the wind) I offer my condolences.

To RE: Bishops Folly:

Just with the fact that we have oil and we can us it, that would lower the price of gas, one of the other writers established that.

Even if it won't have a big impact on prices until a later date in time we still need to act now, that way, eventually we will have lower prices. We can't just say we won't put in the effort because it will take too long, that doesn't work, and its not the American way to give up.

We have to start drilling, now!

Good going on the name dropping. Having a one on one with Rep Bishop is fine as long as you are in a position of influence and make a impact. Your opinion is just that and carries no more weight than any other voter. For all I know you could be his next door neighbor.I had a teenage friendship with a man who carries a huge amount of respect and leverage in this presidential election coming up.His name is " ". Not!!!!!!Ok so you got your one paragraph of fame.I choose not to.

Rob Bishop needs to quit the Republican shuffle dance and stage storming and get with the facts of what he and his Republican minions have done to this nation.

He shouldn't be protesting a LEGAL and century old tradition of taking this summer break because the Republican actually stalled the Dems answer to getting high gasoline prices down, but should break with the ranks and show the American people that he can be honest, truthful and integrious about the issue.

Fact is the Republicans just don't want to hold the big oil companies and their man in the white house (Chenney) accountable for filthy lucre profits while gouging the American's at the pump through the insidious 'futures trading' of oil like pork belly trading. Anything that makes bug-business accountable is simply slam dunked down by Repbulicans. Republicans are actually making economic war against working middle-class Americans. It's that simple!

Utah needs to sweep all the damn Republican caucus out of office over the next 3 years and put Democrats, that hold traditional "majority" Utah values (instead of the elitists values of the current crop of Republicans) in D.C. to better represent the common-sense values Utahns are noted for.
Tommie | 12:59 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
To Angry Republican:

Hey, Bishop and the Republicans have a good point, why should the congressional politicians go on a 5 WEEK VACATION while we have to suffer through these oil prices because the Democrats won't agree on anything.

Democrats don't support Utah values, so don't go off campaigning for them. Demos won't win in Utah, not unless they have a major ideal transformation.

Oil Companies aren't responsible for this, its OPEQ, they are the ones we buy the oil from, and they are rising it, I have read enough on this to know that.

Stop spreading your lies, you just want to attack a group of people that don't share your beliefs, that is all you did in your letter.
re re Bishop's Folly | 1:43 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
The CBS news report didn't help because they didn't cite their source for the DOE and I have found nothing at the DOE's website indicating OCS drilling wouldn't help prices now. The quoted Borenstein, but I doubt that a UC Berkeley energy researcher is unbiased on this question. The article also assumes ,with its 20.7 million barrels/day consumption drying up the OCS capacity in 16 months, that ONLY this oil would be consumed and disregards other oil production. This is a dishonest argument when discussing price of oil.
Re: Bishop's Folly | 2:04 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
Tommie: Before you start whining about congressional politicians that go on vacations while the country suffers.. what about our republican president George W. Bush? He has broken Ronald Reagan's record for taking the most paid time off on your dime and this certainly hasn't helped with the oil crisis.

Face it. The republicans are just as much to blame for these oil prices as the democrats.

Where was Rob Bishop during all of these congressional energy debates? Did he even participate in the debates? I don't recall reading anything about this. And now Rob Bishop is in the public eye after news coverage of him planning to return to D.C. to protest and wave the American flag with his fellow republicans.

Even if the chamber microphones and ceiling lights were operational, these congressmen would still be in the dark.
Where are you? | 3:10 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
To Bishop's Folly: you must not live in Utah. His efforts have been all over the local papers.
Blame Game | 3:15 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
On this post, everyone is pointing the finger at everyone else. The truth of the matter is that Congressmen won't even pick the color of their ties that they wear without first consulting the polls.

We can blame the politicians all we want, but they were simply doing what they thought their constituents wanted them to do. So if you really want to blame someone, blame all of the dumb masses that bought into the extreme environmentalist propaganda that was being broadcast throughout the 80s and 90s. It was those decisions that have left us in this mess where we are now dependent on foreign oil.

to RE: Bishop's folly:

Um, President HAS done something, he lifted the off shore drilling ban, and we are just waiting for Congress to act. Don't be so quick to attack the president, hes done more then people give him credit for.
Gimme a break! | 5:24 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
This is all about the GOP having a tantrum that they can't have their way. It is the GOP that is holding up legislation to address the issue in other ways. They are totally controlled by big oil. Cut off their PAC moeny and then let's see if the GOP keeps pandering to the oil companies, wanting to increase government subsidies to them. Then the GOP fights efforts to regulate hedge fund speculators, who are taxed at a lower rate than the rest of us. Face it, the GOP cares for Wall Street, not Main Street. Utahns don't get it - they are harmed by GOP policies yet think they are part of the Wall Street crowd. Ain't so, sorry to inform you.
Typical Americans. | 8:46 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
Why is it that no one in the US cares where other countries drill for oil or what they destroy in the process but back home they want to make sure that none of their pretty beaches have an oil rig in sight? So selfish and Typical Americans!!!
re: What a hero!! | 9:46 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
The majority of Republicans have pretty much tried to increase supply, and they tried quite often when they were in power. Who has done there very best to reduce supply, and increase energy supplies is the Democrats! It has been there game plan for over a decade. I lived in California in the early 90s, and the Democrat legislature picked MTBE over Ethanol because it would make gas cost $.05 more. They don't want cheap gas because they want to cut consumption. What's funny, is they approved a brand new chemical, MTBE, instead of going with Ethanol to make gas cost more money. MTBE has been found to be super carcinogenic in water, and now it is the oil companies faults! As much as the environmentalists have gone from common sense protection to being against everything, I have lost all respect for them. At this point, I think it would be interesting to see if they get some serious funding OPEC and Russia because it seems they do everything that benefits them. Have you seen any protests about China drilling off Florida for Cuba, but watch the protests fly if an American company was allowed to drill off Florida!
Re: Re: Bishop's Folly | 10:01 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
If Congress allowed drilling off the coasts, and if they modified the leasing process, so that purchase of an lease would be an automatic permit for drilling, it would make a huge difference. Just removing the presidential moratorium on oil made a dent because it showed that this country is starting to get serious about energy. Please keep in mind that there is more to drill for than just oil. There is some serious deposits of natural gas out there, and if you haven't noticed your energy bill, that has more than doubled in the last few years! Also, according to the national academy of science, 62% of the oil in the water is due to natural seeps (just bubbled on out), 32% is due to cars and boats, 4% oil tankers, and less than 1% is due to drilling. That says, the environmentally smart thing would be to drill to release the pressure so that it doesn't bubble on out. Those that question global warming are "supposedly" funded by big oil. I bet a look at the funding for the environmentalists would turn up OPEC, and Russia, and Venezuela. They have lost all common sense, and oppose everything now!
re:Oh Please | 10:28 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
Oil is only about $30 cheaper from its high, and part of it is the fact that the President lifted the moratorium on drilling, and McCain is now for off-shore drilling. That has made the "Sure bet" that it would go up, not a safe bet anymore. If this country gets serious, and increases drilling, and alternative energy, we can become energy independent in 10 years or less.
re: Bishop's Folly | 10:43 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
Yep! We need to increase the cost of oil. The more the better! Look at how it has cut consumption already! Who cares about the auto workers, and the airline workers, and the truckers. Oil is bad! Senator Reid has told us so. Hydrogen powered cars are available now. We just need to raise the price of gas where they will become affordable, and then people will spend the $100,000 for one, so that they can save money at the pump! Wait, not everybody can buy afford a $100,000? Well, I guess we can fight global warming by starving them to death! After all, don't people emit carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide is bad! Once we make oil totally affordable, we can save the world from global warming. What, if we cut all our consumption, we would only make a dent of one half degree Celsius over 50 years? Let's see, that's .1 degrees every 10 years! Well surely that's worth trillions, and reverting back to the feudal age. Wait, global warming was worse back then? Oh, that's because of all the animals. We just need to become vegetarians, and then we can save the world! YEAH!!
re: childish behaviors | 11:04 p.m. Aug. 5, 2008
Yeah, you do need to look at what the Republicans and the Democrats have supported. Nancy has blocked a bunch of bills supported by members of her own party because they included drilling, and the majority of the Congress is for drilling. Then let's look at the bills she has allowed to come to a vote. Well there was that one on making the oil companies drill on their current leases. Well that sounds good, until you think about it. Drilling requires geological surveys to try and guess where the oil is. Then they have to get a permit, and then they drill. If they hit something, they identify if it is commercially viable (there is enough to justify the cost of the infrastructure). Then they have to get permits. Now, if that was tweaked to grant permits for drilling when the lease is purchased, and if it allowed them the chance to explore before drilling, I'm certain the Republicans would be all over that! The fact is, that was a publicity stunt to try and make it look like the oil companies didn't want to drill. That was the type of bills that Nancy allowed to votes on!
Anonymous | 12:00 a.m. Aug. 6, 2008
Let us drill and use the oil that God has so generously given us. Oil is not a bad thing. The concept that the dems and environmentalists are trying to shove down our throats is that oil is an evil commodity. My family didn't get to go on our vacation and our family reunion was cancelled...while Nancy Pelosi and all of these other democrats can go where ever they want to go and I am helping to pay their salaries for their congressional seats. If we don't use our oil, some other country will figure a way to use it. How is it saving the world to use everyone else's oil and horde our own?
Tommie | 1:47 p.m. Aug. 6, 2008
President Bush needs to call Congress back in session , they need to resolve this problem!
Jane | 2:29 p.m. Aug. 6, 2008
I am glad Republicans are finally standing up! This will get all of the democrats voted out of office, just wait and see!
Tommie | 2:59 p.m. Aug. 6, 2008
I totally agree with you jane, the Democrats need to get their act together or get voted out. If they are really for the people like they say they are, then way can't they pass a bill to ban offshore drilling and help out the American people? Something tells me this is all hypocritical!
Tommie | 3:19 p.m. Aug. 6, 2008
I meant open offshore drililng, not ban it.
Tommie | 3:29 p.m. Aug. 6, 2008
Can anyone explain to me why the Democrats should be reelected anyways? What have they done to deserve to remain in power. They already have a slim margin, it wouldn't take a lot for them to lose. Just as a pointer, Congress has a lower approval rating then the president does, wonder why?
Jeron | 4:51 p.m. Aug. 6, 2008
But then again, Republicans still have some shaping up to do too!
to tommie | 6:15 p.m. Aug. 6, 2008
Can you explain your inability to understand even the simplest issues? ... Drilling for oil offshore or onshore is not the answer to our problems ... You know that, why can't you say it? ... If, however, there was some way to harness your hot air, the price of gasoline would be about 25 cents a gallon..
Tommie | 9:58 a.m. Aug. 7, 2008
to "to tommie":

I disagree with what you said, and don't tell me what I know or don't know!

I know that drilling in America will not only help our oil prices but also creat jobs!

You have NO FACTS TO BACK YOU UP! All you just did was criticize me, and insult me!

If you can find a better solution, be my guest and go after it, but I just don't see it. Solar and electric cars cost way too much and are not worth it. Hydrogen has the same problem.

Stop insulting and try and actually come up with a reasonable solution!
tommie tommie | 12:48 p.m. Aug. 7, 2008
EVERY fact backs me up ... I worked in the oil industry for more than 10 years ... how many years have you been in the oil business? ... it takes A LONG TIME under the best circumstances to go from an undeveloped lease to actual oil production to distribution ... then we are talking just a few cents difference at the gasoline pump, IF ANY! ... you say you "KNOW" things, but you give no indication of how you know them or why any thinking person should pay attention to you ... your logic is an insult to a productive discussion of an urgent American problem ... we must (MUST!) find energy solutions besides oil ... as for myself, I have wasted too much energy responding to your wild posts..
Tommie | 2:51 p.m. Aug. 7, 2008
Look, all you did in your previous comment was insult me, you didn't bring up any facts, maybe you should do that next time instead of attacking someone for their opinion, I have a right to my opinion just as much as you do, and I am not budging either.
go tommy! | 4:20 p.m. Aug. 7, 2008
By just mentioning that we might be for drilling, the foreign powers started lowering the price per barrel. Where are we going to be in ten years? Ten dollars a barrel? We need to drill now in the old places and in new places just to keep a good defense going against the foreign oil barons.
tommie clone | 6:35 p.m. Aug. 7, 2008
You mean there are MORE of you? ... Yep, I'll bet those foreign powers are just quaking in their boots (or sandals) ... Your arguments are simplistic and you post is nonsense ... you talk about 10-dollar-a-barrel oil 10 years from now? ... the price of oil is about $120 a barrel right now ... it went UP today ... in 10 years it may be $300 dollars a barrel or more ... the equation of how that price is set is extremely complex and has little, if anything, to do with "foreign oil barons" fearing silly posturing by U.S. legislators ... of course we know that you meant to say $10 a GALLON for gasoline and that you couldn't be bothered to proofread your post before sending it ... we need real energy answers for the future, not just a continuance of our addiction to oil ... that drug is finite and only simple-minded people could believe "drilling" is a long-term solution for a very serious problem!
Anonymous | 10:45 p.m. Aug. 8, 2008
Well, you really bawled me out...I was very tired and very stressed when I wrote my post and please don't blame tommie. I did proof read my post and even missed my misspelling of tommie. I believe we need new energy solutions for the future, I am very interested in conserving, recycling & renewing our resources if possible, but I also believe that we should be allowed to use the natural resources that are available in and around this country. I also saw that the price of oil per barrel and per gallon went down after "silly posturing by U.S. legislators".
