I'm so excited for the season that I read everything anyone writes about BYU football as soon as it gets posted. It doesn't help though. August 30 couldn't come soon enough.

For 2008, go Cougars!!!!!!!!!!!
Alma the Wiser | 7:51 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Unga will suffer the 'Sophomore Slump' this year. BYU is headed for 8 wins or less. Hall will struggle as well as he will throw for fewer yards and TDs than last year, but more INTs.

Get your list of excuses ready, BYU fans. Your gonna need 'em.

Re: Alma the Dumbest | 8:05 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Wishful thinking from a BYU hater.

BYU is going to have an outstanding season. No excuses needed.

It's funny that some Utah fans are in full lather hoping that all of BYU's starters go down with injuries. They must be scared to death that their beloved Utes won't have a chance against a full-strength BYU team in November.
SundanceKid | 8:11 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
To: Alma the Wiser

Take this to the bank and draw interest on it. The Utes will lose at Michigan, Ute fans will turn on the team, and they will call for the head of Whittingham....same tune, different year! All this after the first game!
UtesFan4Ever | 8:18 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I have not read all of this article, but just by the headline itself I want to post this...if Unga has anything he can improve on, watch out Mountain West Conference and any other opponent. The kid is a STUD!
Alma the Wiser | 8:34 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Afraid of BYU at full strength?!?!?!? Hardly.

I am looking forward to UTAH being at full strength for a change.

The last three years, Utah has had issues at QB and elsewhere, going into the rivalry game.

'05 Starting QB injured, won with a backup QB.

'06 Starting QB redshirting, one play away from winning with backup QB.

'07 Starting QB playing with seperated shoulder, starting RB out for the season with injury, best WR out for the season with injury, best OL out for the season with injury, and the list of additional players playing with sprains and strains was every bit as long as what BYU was dealing with. Again, just one play away from winning.

Yes, UTAH at full strength is TERRIFYING for BYU fans. UTAH WILL WIN MORE GAMES THAN BYU THIS YEAR, UTAH WILL WIN THE MWC, UTAH WILL WIN ANOTHER BOWL GAME.
Disapointing | 8:45 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
It is really sad that Ute fans have to get on hear and bash the cougs and that coug fans have to bash the Utes. The season hasn't started yet and all of this pointless bickering is giving me a headache. Let them play it out on the field.
Whatever Alma | 8:53 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Good for Utah. But in case you didn't notice, this article was about BYU, not Utah. So take your little Utah song and dance and overconfident predictions and superlatives, and post them where someone cares to read them.

ATW is a closet cougar fan. He likes victories so has to go to Provo to see them. Kwhit doesn't protect players from injury, sorry, i wouldn't expect any changes in their program. BYU will be the team to beat and as always, yewts will have several losses, excuses, and unexplainable ones at that:unlv, wyoming...etc
To Alma the Wiser | 9:42 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
If you didn't notice last week's article stated that Hall played the last few games with a grade 3 seperated shoulder. In history they don't make notes about the players that weren't on the field, they talk about those that were and performed. Don't get me wrong I would hate to lose Unga or Hall but we need to understand thats the nature of the game.
Re: Injury excuses | 9:51 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
To: Alma the not so Wise

EVERY college football team suffers injuries. The problem for Utah hasn't been injuries, it's been inconsistency. How else do you explain being able to beat OOC teams and bowl opponents, but losing to mediocre MWC teams, IN THE SAME season?

The injury excuse is getting old. Time for Utah players to man up and stop using injuries as an excuse for losing to mediocre teams.

If Utah was capable of beating UCLA at home, they were certainly capable of beating UNLV on the road, the very next week, and Air Force at home. It wasn't Utah's injury-riddled offense that gave up 27 points to UNLV. Utah's supposedly "superior" defense made a very pedestrian runner, Frank Summers, look like an MVP.

Frank Summers:
vs Utah: 29 att, 190 yards, 6.6 avg, 2 TDs
vs BYU: 13 att, 50 yards, 3.8 avg, 0 TDs
CougarBlue | 10:13 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Dear Alma, Why would you use such a name and run it down with such idiotic comments. Alma, both 1 and 2 were wise men and would not be mouthing off without thinking first.

Let's see Utah QB out with shoulder seperation, BYU QB plays with shoulder seperation.

I hope both teams are undefeated come November 22 and BYU wins 100-0. What a great day that would be.

I wonder what Utah's excuses will be this year.

Utah should win the "Excuse Bowl" hands down this year.
Hi Alma | 10:14 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Excuses are for rebuilding years, like last year. BYU's Defensive Backfield was decimated before the season, so there's my excuse for not going undefeated.

But I guess there can be exceptions: Utah football last year.

When BYU show up at LES North, and trounces a healthy Utah team, that's were excuses come in.
Re: Sad | 10:25 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
We'll see how sad you are when BYCC drops its first game against WA.
Way to go... | 10:53 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Unga and the Cougars. Now let's see if the Media can pronounced your name again properly on TV....LOL!!
Alma the Wiser | 11:54 a.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Fact: Utah lost 51 starts to injury last year, more than any other team in the country.

Fact: Johnson's shoulder seperation was worse than Hall's, as evidenced by Johnson needing surgery to fix it.

Print out this comment section, Cougar fans, so you can look back on your comments at the end of the season. After BYU loses to Washington, UCLA, TCU, Utah, and whatever bowl opponent they get, I don't want to hear any excuses from BYU fans. Don't tell me that Unga was out, or Hall was playing with pain, or Collie had a lingering stress fracture.

Re: Re: Sad | 12:07 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
BYU first game is against Norther Iowa not WA.
Ute fans= uninformed.

If you go to other posts about Utah on the Deseret news you dont find BYU fans disparaging the Utah team. Why is that? Ill tell you. BYU fans are confident in their team and hope the best for Utah. Utah fans are insecure.
KingDredd | 12:11 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Hey UTE FANS!....What you gonna do when your team loses to Michigan to start the season off?
Re: Alma the only excuse maker | 12:20 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
-Fui played the entire season on an injured leg.
-Collie played most of the season on a sprained ankle.
-Hall played the Utah and bowl games with a 3rd-degree shoulder separation (same severity as Johnson's)
-Unga played the bowl game on a sprained ankle
-JJ Diluigi missed the entire season because of injury
-most of the defensive backfield was lost for the season in fall camp because of injuries

Some BYU players simply gutted it out and played through their injuries and some players were replaced by backups.

Bottom line:

BYU simply handled their injuries and won. Utah didn't handle injuries, and lost, and then used their injuries as their excuse for losing.

Cougar fan | 12:22 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
As a cougar fan I hope the Utes do well against nationally ranked Michigan (24th). Its good for the conference if they pull out a win. And then its good for BYU to beat Utah. Its like beating Michigan and Utah all in one game.
Anonymous | 12:31 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
BYU had just as many injuries to their defense, plus they started WALK ONS! How much better is BYU's defense going to be now that they have actually recruits!?
Watch Out | 12:32 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
BYU, to reiterate: Don't overlook Northern Iowa in the opener. Those boys know how to hit, and they aren't intimidated by anyone.

Panthers were 13-1 last season and beat Big 12's Iowa State 24-13.
Sounds like... | 12:33 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Well Ute fans sounds like to me with all this complaining about injuries. that Utah needs to wondering how they are conditioning their players... goosd conditioning will turn into good performance on the field. Yes injuries happen in football but the best teams in the country hardly ever have major injuries on their teams why is that.. because they have good conditioning and they have heart and soul in their locker room. That is one thing that Utah has lacked ever since Urban Meyer left... and it is one thing that BYU gain once Bronco became head coach. Conditioning and heart and soul. That thats what makes a good football team. GO COUGS!!!
Nevada Blue | 12:34 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
BYU is my team but I am cheering on Utah this year too. Go get Michigan, Utah. A win there only helps the MWC and BYU. I hope ewe destroy them. Cheers to every MWC team against the Big 6 schools. And I hope it comes down to two undefeated teams in the Holy War. How can any true fan not hope for that?

May there be 6 non-big 6 teams in the rankings.

And go Wolf Pack. Take the WAC this year.

May the big 6 teams lose every game to the little guys.

And may Notre Dame continue to be as bad as they were last year. Go Navy! Go San Diego State! May ND never go to another bowl game and if they do let us hope they continue to set the record for most continuous losses in bowl games.
BYUtah fan | 1:00 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Boy did you folks take the bait. Alma throws out some absurd comments and BYU fans jump at it. Alma wins.

Both Utah and BYU show some terrific potential this year. If Utah beats wins its first few (Michigan included) and BYU starts 3-0 this could be a fantastic year for BCS busting and some really fun spectating.

Like most of you, I can't wait for the season to start. BYU's offense will be even better than last year and (going out on a limb here) I believe that the BYU defense will be more athletic, faster and even better than last year's.

Fortunately for all of us none of these comments mean a thing. The truth will be played out over the next few months. These forums just give us an outlet for our early season excitement.

Go Utes!! Go Cougars!!
Re: excuse maker @ 12:20 | 12:57 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Can't you read? Johnson's needed surgery, Hall's did NOT. Johnson's was worse, end of story.

That's cute that BYU had a few injuries of their own. Utah had far more injuries to key personnel. Diluigi? Vakapuna? Those are backups.

Serious question for BYU fans: How many games would BYU have won last year or the year before if Hall missed 3 games and played most of the season with a shoulder seperation, Unga broke his leg in the first quarter of the Arizona game, Feinga tore his ACL in camp, Collie tore his ACL in the UCLA game, THEN BYU proceded to have a wide assortment of other players either play injured or miss games with injury?????

I will tell you.

Arizona L
UCLA L
Tulsa L
UNLV L
New Mexico L
TCU L
Utah L

Nobody can argue otherwise, because even when healthy, BYU either lost or barely won all of these games. Without their stars, BYU would have had a losing record. Utah was able to win 9 games under those circumstances. Keep that in mind as Utah goes back to the Fiesta bowl this year.
Re:BYUtah fan | 1:15 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
No BYU fans took the bait. Alma the Whiner has been whining about Utah's injuries for the last couple of months. He just can't handle the truth, that BYU was able to win, despite their injuries. And Utah wasn't able to.

His clueless list of losses he dreams BYU would have had with even more injuries is proof of his desperate attempt to marginalize BYU's success and Utah's failure to handle injuries.
Utah handled injuries quite well | 1:28 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
9 wins that included a win over UCLA, a bowl win, and a 7 game winning streak? I would say that Utah handled the injuries quite well. While I won't totally agree with him that BYU would have lost all of those games listed, I do think BYU would have lost at least 2 or 3 more games under the hypothetical circumstances.

im excited for this upcoming season! aside from all the negative comments i do have to say that there is going to some good compition out there, im not too worried about it though...
byu knows how to be ready for big games, with their coaching and max leading the team im sure this is going to be a great year for the cougers. now go prove yourselves! go cougs!!
Idaho Cougar Fan | 2:23 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
First off Fui WAS 1st string starter at the start of the year and lost his spot due to injury! Second of all BYU lost 3 starters on defense before the season even started and then lost Gooch (other starting safety) during the middle of the season. The Cougars didn't make any excuses for their losses like all the whiney poor are us Ute fans! Face it Utah, BYU= better and deeper than Utes!
AzBYUfan | 2:37 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Optimism abounds, I have no problem with that. I have no problem the the negative Ute comments, when Cougar optimism increases and when wins increase, the negative comments increase from Ute fans, so it is a good sign. The last time Ute fans weren't very negative was in 2004 when the Utes were dominant over BYU and everyone else they played. I hope the Utes pull off a win vs MI, that would be awesome for the state and conference.

"If you go to other posts about Utah on the Deseret news you dont find BYU fans disparaging the Utah team. Why is that? Ill tell you. BYU fans are confident in their team and hope the best for Utah. Utah fans are insecure."

Today, the DesNews posted an article on Utah. Here is a post from a BYU fan (second post):

"silly yewts,
Here at BYU, we have a national championship, a heisman winner, more attractive fans and we own the overall series against you. Bronco is twice the coach Urban Crier was. what do you have?

the only pressure is not to get blown out by us for a third straight year.

4th and 18."

This post is just one of many from byU fans.

byU fans are the worst in the world at trolling Utah articles and posting trash on them. That's fine with me, just want the byU fans to stop pretending it doesn't happen.
Someone tell me | 3:42 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Exactly when did Utah achieve the status to converse with BYU athletics on an even field?

Did I miss the punch line? Oh you mean 2004 and the cycle that runs through the NCAA. for example, for two decades the Florida Gators scrambled in and out of the bottom of the top 20, how 'bout Miami, right now? not to mention the dreaded FSU or the Alabama cremson tide? the mighty Penn State?

All good programs, for sure and they all cycle back to the top, just like the cougars. But then again, you have the one hit wonders, the flash in the pan team that has to crawl back into the cave and figure out how they won in the first place.
Vain repetition | 4:02 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Yo, Alma the Wiser, it's time to climb down from your rameumptum. You're just spouting the same repetitions as the past several years.

!. We're great!

2. Sorry that the rest of the league can't be as great as we are.

3. We were injured.

4. Yeah, but we were the first to bust the BCS!

5. Yada, yada, yada.

It's time to separate the wheat from the tears, Alma/Ute homers (and, no, that is not a typo). Learn how to say a real prayer before late November -- you're going to need it.

"Silly Yewts" was a ute troll's post and you know it.

We have to deal with Alma the Ute over here and all of his silly nonsense.

Really, I would totally love it if BYU cut Utah off and refused to play them anymore. Change conferences, go independent, do what it takes. RES would dry up, because the ONLY thing that fuels your fans is BYU sports.

This constant little brother's whining is plain obnoxious.

You kids, take your ball and go away.

The adults are talking.
Ankle injury | 4:14 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Regarding the play when Unga injured his ankle -- was that by chance when he drove right through that one poor fool defender at the goal line near the end of the game? (Nice tackling skills, dude!)
CougsOnFire | 4:33 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Ute bashing a Cougar. Cougar bashing a Ute.

One thing is for sure. Both teams are gonna be OnFire... Especially if they both stay away from the injury bug.

This year will end with three MWC teams in the top-25... Hopefully four!

GO COUGARS!!! Year of '08 AND '09

Most of the season... Hall did play with a VERY sore shoulder, Collie did play with a sore leg, AND against Utah -- thoughs PLUS Unga played with a sprained ankle.

What's your point??? We still won. We will still win!

Hall choose not to have surgery (same injury) to solve the problem.

Johnson is a whimp, and Hall is the stud........
Re: Re: Your precious BYU fan... | 5:48 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
You should read your post again. All you did with your post is add to the bickering. Calling Ute fans "little brother," proclaiming the only thing that "fuels Ute fans is BYU sports." I'm sorry, but there was nothing in your post that screamed "adult" as you claim yourself to be.

I know. I know. I'm doing the same thing right now. But what's worse acknowledging your part in a juvenile-sports feud, or partaking and then claiming to be above it? We should both leave and act like adults. Don't pin it on one side.

Chuck Jones | 7:15 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Alma the Wiseless,

Just think for a second. Michigan is not looking past the first game of the season this year. It led to a coach getting fired and won't happen again.

Michigan is playing at home, with their refs, they are bigger, faster, and stronger than anything you will see the rest of the year. The utes are fragile little China dolls (they're still stinging from Austin Collie's giving respect to the lord from a year ago) and don't play hurt. I wish them a safe and happy trip w/o injury, but they knew what was coming when they accepted to play for the money.

You have until the 30th of the month to talk smack, then post-30th excuses begin.

I suggest a Alma Red Sweatshirt so we know who to remind about your "predictions".
re:Re: Re: Your precious BYU fan | 7:21 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Actually, I do agree with the earlier post that the only thing that "fuels Ute fans is BYU sports." But, then, I've thought that for the past thirty years.

Look at the most popular stories today.

Everyone, including Utes are all on the BYU boards.

Seriously folks, without BYU to hate, Utah would have only a handfull of fans.

Brettski | 8:11 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
Wow, these postings took a turn for the worse. BYU and UTAH fans have been on each other's boards.

As a Ute fan, Unga scares me a little. The dude is scary good. Best of luck to him. I kind of hope he goes to the NFL after this year. :)

Utah has a couple of very talented backs as well. I'm looking forward to the state of Utah dominating the MWC and hopefully the Utes coming out on top. Best of luck cougs, but not zoobs. :)

Go Utes
Re: Re: Re: Re: your precious | 8:14 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
So because on one random day BYU happens to have two stories on the most popular list. Now we're supposed believe all Ute fans are fueled by BYU sports? That is some real scientific research. Are you in the polling business? I sure hope not.

Why don't you checkout the readers' comments in the "Utah Utes football: Pressure, hopes high at U" article. Shockingly, to some narrow-minded BYU fans, there are plenty of BYU "trolls" spewing their rhetoric just like the accused Ute fans in some of these posts.

Excuses, excuses, excuses | 8:31 p.m. Aug. 4, 2008
I have never heard so much whining and so many excuses. Bottom line Utes, you lost to BYU. There is not an asterik by the record indcating that you are feeling picked on because you had injuries.

If you can't deal with the injuries, get out of the football industry - AND STOP YOUR WHINING.

What a bunch of cry babys.
