We have mostly Pelosi to thank for this, if you are really upset that she closed the doors on congress and would not talk about a solution, I cut and pasted this from off her website. People, you need to write to her and let her know that you are not happy about her lack of concern for us in being able to put gas in the car and food on the table, because of high gases.

Congresswoman Pelosi wants to hear from you. You can email her at sf.nancy@mail.house.gov, or by using the form below. Please note that the rules of Congressional courtesy prevent Rep. Pelosi from replying to emails if she cannot determine that you are a constituent, so remember to include your full name, address, and zip code.

It just goes to show you that Washington is a broken mess. These men and women are so interested in their own interests that thay have no vision for the future or the realities of everyday living Americans. Oh they all know how to say the right things and certainly be victims of the "other party" but actual work where they "may" be held acountable, I don't think so. Of course you and I are the real saps for re-electing this folks to not represent us the people but their party.
Tommie | 1:44 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
From what I hear, Democrats are loving the high gas prices, because it is forcing Americans to cut back and leave less of a "carbon footprint", which is a joke. Some Republicans have vowed to stay at Congress even though the session is over, they are protesting, asking President Bush for a special session to be called. We need to support these guys, they are staying away from their breaks to make a point, that Americans want lower gas prices.

We need to do the same thing we did when Congress failed to pass that illegal amnesty bill that we all fought against. It was because of our voices that the bill failed, and it is only going to be because of our voices that prices will go down, and Congress decides not to listen, then we will vote them out of office, a lot of them are up come November, and they know that, and of course they don't want to lose their source of income. Speak up everybody, its the only we will solve our gas price probelem, drill more here and look at alternative energy, both needs to be done, especially drilling, so call your reps!

How can anyone think that by allowing the oil companies even more leeway to drill and experiment will drastically reduce the price we pay at the pump? If they started drilling today we may see a slight and I mean a slight dent in prices in say six to ten years. Is it worth it when the oil companies already have so many other options for drilling and exploration? Do they really need our protected lands to foul up? These companies are already showing record breaking profits quarter after quarter, how much more are we going to give them? Bush will most likely hand out even more no-bid contracts to his braintrust of oil execs anyways. This is Bush's way, give till it hurts...us, the people. All of Bush's biggest contributors are showing record profits as the rest of the country wallows on the brink of destruction. Bush and the Republican/Democratic (they are after all pretty much the same) party has put our country back five or six decades with thier over spending and removal of our freedoms. Hey people fear is a money maker, wake up and take the country back!
ike | 2:03 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
I added a comment but it vanished...I wonder why? It did not contain profanity or anything overtly negative.
I just said that Bush has given his biggest supporters huge breaks and the Democratic/Republican party could care less about us, the people. Money and power are what sells in Washington. Do not give the oil companies more land, they have more than enough to explore already. Our untouched lands need to stay that way. With oil companies showing record profits quarter after quarter why give them more? Even if we drill today we wouldn't see any relief at the pump for six to ten years and the amount would be laughable, maybe a few cents. Don't give Bush the opportunity to hand out any more no-bid contracts, just say no. Fear sells people, lets take our country back from the corporations. For the people by the people...not For the major corporations by the major corporations.
Cougar Blue | 2:13 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Mr. Hatch--If you want to increase the supply of gasoline on the American market and lower the prices in the process, why don't you talk the big oil companies into stopping or at least reducing the amount of gasoline and heating fuel they export from our country every day. Just yesterday, Forbes Magazine which is about as accurate as you can get, had an article stating that our exports of gas and heating oil were rising rapidly. And the figure they quote from the Department of Energy will shock you--it is 1.6 million barrels per day. That's right, per DAY. Wow, why won't they put it on our market? Now, quit whining about needing to drill for more oil. Oh, but I forgot, the Republican attack dogs are in bed with the giant oil moguls. Silly me!
jr | 2:16 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Daddy Bush stopped the explorations back in his time, it is a known fact and in reality there is enough areas option to exploration but the oil companies have chosen not to do anything other than make huge profits. The big shareholders are grinning all the way to the bank - that is that latest facts folks. Not Nancy or the Dems. Ask yourself how much is Dick and George making from the oil racket? Why have they not maintained their refineries in this country? George has given them big tax breaks but it is Nancy's falt. Come on listen to the news, read papers outside of Utah, get the facts. America is being raped by corporate greed
To: ike, Cougar Blue, jr | 2:28 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008

Typical response: Bush's are lining their pockets. Oh, wait, it's the oil companies - yeah, they're the culprits.

May I say that you're wrong.

Oil is a worldwide commodity. Price is driven by supply and demand, which in turn pushes speculators.

Simple solution. All we (US congress) have to say is that we are serious about exploring our own resources. You'll see the price of oil drop over night.

Drill here. Drill now. Pay less.
jr - you're mistaken | 2:29 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Mr. JR. I love to hear these arguments that don't make any sense whatsoever. If you are convinced that corporations are to blame, then why not open up offshore for more drilling, it won't do anything anyway right? Corporations won't drill there because they are being enriched by the Bush/Cheney families, so why not open it up. Let's just see if you are right.

Of course, you would rather live in a conspiracy theory world than a free market place. That conspiracy says that all republican's and big businesses are bad, and you can't believe anything they say. Wake up and use your brain, instead of listening to and repeating the ignorant lies of the socialists.

Matheson was the swing vote that turned off the lights to Congress this afternoon. He does not want a debate or vote on the energy situation. Very arrogant.
Tommie | 2:59 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
To those that say Bush and the oil companies are to blame:

Not true. Alot of the problem is from OPEQ, that is why drililng in America could help solve the major fuel crisis we have, because we wouldn't be dependent on other countries for that fuel.

all the environmentalists and any politicians who are in bed with 'em like Obama, Pelosi, etc.
why wait? | 3:05 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
So if we drill now, it wont make any difference? Well what about 10 years form now when gas prices are pushing 8-10 dollars a gallon?
If we begin exploring now, in ten years the country wont be crippled becuase truly unaffordable gas prices. This would ease the crunch while alternatives are explored, and if nothing viable comes up, the country will still be able to function because we planned ahead wisely now.
Democrats are going to truly truly bring this counrty to its knees in the future if they dont compromise for some kind of reasonable solutions now. Its a simple fact.
4 U Utah whiner's | 3:07 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
The problem with this country today is that we have too much to say, and not enough clout to back up what we say. We have never, in our lifetimes, endured a war on our soil. No one in this country has never been held back from going to work, or stopped from going to a grocery store, or had necessities like water, sewage, gas, etc. witheld from them. And the reason for that, is because we bring it to everyone. We have never had to personally fight and really struggle for our freedoms. We have brave men and women that do it for us. I don't care why we are over in Iraq/Afghanistan. I am glad we have men and women who make the sacrefice to ensure our safety, and more importantly our ability to consistently provide for our families. We should have been in Iraq 12 years ago, but Clinton was too busy dodging his impeachement, and riding high on Regan's economical plans, to take the time to really research the situations arising in the Middle East.
See U at the polls in Nov. | 3:10 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Just be glad that you can drive your car to work, no matter how expensive gas is, and remember, if you think you have it bad here, I dare you to go somewhere else. Because if you are homeless in MANY other countries, you don't have shelters to go to, you die of starvation on the street. If you don't have health insurance, you don't get to go into a hospital and get even enough care to stabalize you, you just bleed to death on the street. You don't get welfare, you don't get food stamps, you don't get WIC, you don't get MOST of these things, in MANY countries. We need to stop blaming everyone else for our problems, and we need to have PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY! Focus on your community, your own family, and stop thinking that because you elect ONE MAN, that ONE MAN can change the country in a day, a month, a year, or a 4 year term. We have to focus on ourselves. Be glad that you have what you have here. We have created a system of moochers in this country. BE ACCOUNTABLE!

Oil companies are in business to make a profit. That is why any company is in business; to make a profit. The only way they can make a profit is to produce a product and sell it for more than it costs to produce. If they are sitting on any leases, there must be a reason for that. Most likely because those leases are not profitable; if they were, they would be pumping oil from them. They can't make money by holding on to their product and not selling it.
Hoboclown | 3:58 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Global supply and demand, plus the value of the almighty dollar dictates the price you pay at the pump. If more Americans used locally produced compressed natural gas in their autos demand would fall for
(that old dirty) gasoline.
Let's think about this | 4:25 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Why are we waiting here for Congress to do something? Let us (Americans) take action now. If congress does not want to act, fine, then we shall. Here is what I propose.

First, oil and gas prices are effected by supply and demand, so what can we do, Drive less. I know this hurts and for some of us it would be hard, because we must drive because there are no other options, I live were the is no public transportation.

Second, Let's cut back on our vacations, do activities around our homes. If we stop traveling we are not supporting the Oil Companies.

Third, Car pool, for those who can or use public transportation. With less cars on the road the demand for gas should go down.

Forth, let's work on electing Representitives and Senators who will represent and take action for those who voted them into office.

There are probably many many more things we can do, but it comes down to us as Americans to do something. We are all fed up with promises that never come true.

Wake up America, WE THE PEOPLE, need to take charge of this situation and do something about it.

Tommie | 5:16 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Standard of living is also different in other countries, just to inform "See U at the polls"

The pound is worth more than the dollar, and gas is more expensive there, because of the difference, so that is half of the reason why some countries have higher prices, the other half is that some countries have no way to support themselves with oil so they have to import it, which forces it to cost more.

Speaking of The Obamacon Messiah, he was heckled today in St. Petersburg Florida. OBAMACON: Hold on a second. (heckles) Hold on a second. (booing) That's all right. That's right, all right. Listen. Excuse me. (shouting) Hey. Hold on a second. (chanting) Hold on, everybody. Excuse me, young man. This is going to be a question-and-answer session, so you can ask a question later. Let me make my statement. (applause) Why don't you all sit down. Then you can ask a question. That's all sit down. You'll, you'll have, you'll have a chance to answer your question, but you don't want to disrupt the whole meeting. Just be courteous, that's all. All you gotta do is be courteous. That's all. Just be courteous and you'll have a chance to make a statement. Just relax. That's all. Just relax. You'll have a chance. All right. Where was I, and what was I talking about? Obama wants another stimulus check sent to every American. He wants the check to be in the amount of $1,000. And do you know who he wants to be responsible for paying for this? Big Oil.
ALL legislation is at standstill | 5:35 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Obama wants a new windfall profits tax on Big Oil because of these huge profits that they announced yesterday and another $1,000 stimulus check to every American that qualifies (which would be most, certainly not me) paid for from this windfall profits tax. This is idiotic. Once again it's pure pandering and pure populism and these guys can't figure out who their villain is going to be. When oil was approaching $150 a barrel, of course the evil villains are the spectators. Now it's back to Big Oil. Even the Los Angeles Times today got it right in an editorial: Nearly 50% of those profits reported by Big Oil are taxable. That means federal taxation on the Big Oil profits. So whatever you read, $11 billion, whatever the number, half of it already goes to the federal government, and they want a windfall profits tax. Nancy Pelosi and the gang have left town. There is nothing going to be done for five weeks, not a single appropriation bill, nothing on drilling. They want you suffering. The Dem's.

All I know is that I only live on $1,140.00 amonth and I know that I am very lucky to have that. But I also need money for gas and food and a little extra and since the price of gas and food has gone up I feel like I am house bound.I live alone and I need to have a ride now and then. Maybe able to buy me a new dress or gift for my family. I sure people that are more educated then I am will say getting over your self but I want to enjoy what life I have left also. I belive it is just greed with people that has lots of money and don't have to worry about where the next dollar is comming from.
Dale | 6:08 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
No, no. Natural gas looks good now but in the long term, it will go up too and then we'll all be paying to heat our homes. The long term solution is the electric car. The basic technology exists. Electricity is the one thing we can produce right here in the US. We need to spend billions on windmills and solar farms starting now. Touching an electric wire along the freeway would alow the electric car to go coast to coast. This is all doable. It will get us out of the middle east and clean the air. I hope the price of gas goes up, not down!

WE NEED TO REGULATE THESE OIL MAFIA...WE NEED TO SPEAK OUT!!! NOT SAYING "THOSE DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS" "THEY NEED TO DO SOMETHING...WE ARE PAYING FOR THEIR JOBS...AND BUSH...PLEASE QUIT!!!

The MidAmerica Coin Expo in Schaumburg, July 10-13, proved to be a success. In fact, many dealers reported being pleasantly surprised at how much business occurred. Big-ticket coins were selling well, and at least one dealer was fortunate enough to generate $1 million in retail sales, consisting of many five and six-figure specimens. While retail business was certainly taking place, wholesale activity dominated the show, and those dealers holding inventories of rare, original material had little difficulty finding buyers and completing transactions. Fresh, premium quality coins, especially Type, was in high demand, while ugly and over graded slabs were simply not selling. Such fastidiousness from collectors, combined with high-volume demand, creates the problem of a severe deficit of high quality material, and once again, the report from Chicago is that more PQ coins are needed in this market.

There's no shortage in the coin collecting department, and no lack of gas either.

Try a new line of work if your unhappy, and it's there in Utah as well.

Well, we have some people posting without a clue.
We need to be energy independent. To do that, we need oil, natural gas, wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, nuclear, bio from sugar cane & sugar beets, tar sands, shale oil, etc.
Car gas from corn is a stupid idea.

We need to drill more oil for "short" term solutions. If we are going to generate more electricity, and use natural gas for cars, we need to use more ground based heat pump systems for heating a cooling commercial buildings, and houses). You know, the slinky or well systems. So far, neither side is doing anything for ground base heat pump systems. The short term cost is just a little too much based on current prices, but if you are using electricity for energy, it will save a ton.

Lets put Jason Chaffetz back there. At least we will have one vote. Since the democrats have been brain dead on this issue, lets get rid of a few back there. Where is Matheson on this?

Oil is a problem? | 10:06 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Tommie] Democrats are loving the high gas prices, because it is forcing Americans to cut back and leave less of a "carbon footprint"] Nancy wants to save the planet!

Nancy's home state, California has dumped more carbon foot prints into the stratosphere this year, than all the cars ever invented in history.

environmentalist friendly wild fires.
MTM | 10:10 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
The answer is simple, drill what we have and stop importing oil. To claim more drilling won't impact oil prices is silly. More oil will drive the price down. If it wasn't true, then why does the price of oil drop when they start producing more from wells in the Middle East???
Not for BIG oil | 10:14 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
Big Oil does not want to get more oil...50 Billion in profits delivered by the oil men in the white house is the motivation. Offshore driling will only perpetuate profits 10 years form now....plus lots of money for Republican candidates.
Democrats Making Big OIL $$$$$ | 10:55 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
If Democrats had signed off on off-shore drilling and ANWAR, under Clinton, we'd have it now when we need it! Clinton said he was against it because we wouldn't see it until 10 years out. Well guess what, inaction is costing us!!! On top of that, we are at the mercy of our enemies. Hugo Chavez, and Iran! We can turn coal to oil for $55/barrel, which is less than half the cost of a barrel of oil, and we have enough coal for 200 years! We will be into alternatives way before then! The problem is that the Democrats think that we can get into the alternatives now! They thought this 10 years ago. The technology is closer, but we are still 5 to 10 years out. Here's an idea: Instead of complaining that the oil companies aren't drilling on their leases, why don't they pass a rule where the oil companies are given an automatic permit to drill when they buy the lease. Then perhaps, they might be able to drill on a lot of their leases. It ticks me off that the Democrats are using that excuse when exploration has to happen and permits granted first!
Wacky conspiracy theories | 11:38 p.m. Aug. 1, 2008
It is interesting to read all the crazy conspiracy theories such as Bush and Cheney controlling the entire world market for oil. The problem that some of you can't seem to grasp is the fact that oil is traded on the "world" market, so yes, refined fuels get exported, imported, you name it. Commodities are sold to the highest bidder. Bush/Cheney, the Congress, the Supreme Court cannot change that fact unless you want our government to nationalize the entire industry and we know how efficient the government is in managing resources so things would most likely get worse. The best thing to do in the short term is to balance the budget which would boost the dollar's value considerably, put more crude on the world market by drilling for more, and promote conservation. In the long term, we need to have a doable plan to get off of fossil fuels entirely. Our world's economies are based on fossil fuels, so this will take some time to change our infrastructure and bring new technologies online. The best solution is for Congress to compromise and be logical rather than emotional about our energy problems.
Cherilyn Bacon Eagar | 12:15 p.m. Aug. 2, 2008
If Matheson was the swing vote that shut down the discussion before Congress' vacation, he needs to be replaced in November.

Utah cannot wait around for Washington to fix this problem. Its time for our State Legislature to take charge under the 10th Amendment for the good of the people they represent.

Governor Huntsman, John Valentine, Curt Bramble and Utah majority leadership: We need your courage to step up to the plate now to do whatever is required to call a special session and to take action to access our vast resources confiscated by an unconstitutional Presidential executive order.

The fundamental questions are: Why is the federal government allowed to dictate to local private business in the first place? Or have we become a socialist-fascist, top-down, bureaucratic economy controlled by Washington D.C.?

Environmental policies have fronted for socialist economics for too long. They have passed regulations under both Democrat and liberal me-too GOP leadership.

The only recourse now is to work through our state legislature and to act independently of Congress. Which of our state elected officials will have the courage to take the first step?

So if we don't drill for oil it won't make a difference for six years huh? If we don't drill for oil now we can triple the price of gas in six years and we still won't have any new oil drilled!

It never ceases to amaze me how shortsighted and downright stupid people can be when they let their ideologies override common sense!

Until we have vehicles that don't need oil and gasoline we still have to have oil and gasoline! What's so hard to understand about that?
Charles London | 2:14 p.m. Aug. 3, 2008
Obama will announce a "Manhattan Project" for energy if elected. It will be for everything under the sun except oil. Accordingly, oil prices will continue to skyrocket. So as they do, no matter if OBAMA gets to tax the oil companies, they will just add it to the price. The net effect is that American tax payers will suffer, we will not increase our energy, and big oil will keep on laughing. The answer is competition. We must open up oil shale, coal to liquids, etc. If this is done simultaneously with environmental best efforts, everyone wins. Look for OBAMA to make oil shale bipartisan as it was in the 70's under Carter.
