Salt Lake finally has winning mark on Findley's big goal in big game
Nick Rimando has been named the July MLS Player of the Month. In July alone,
he's posted three shutouts for RSL.
As much as I would like to see Seitz play, it is hard to replace Rimando when he
is doing so well. That goal would not have been saved by very many keepers, if
any keepers, in the world. This season keeps getting better. RSL is no longer on
the end of losing in the last seconds of the game, atleast for the most part.
all you guys talking about Rimando being too short are crazy. Him and Olave are
the only reason were in first place right now with the offense struggling. How
many shut outs does he have this year? I dont recall him getting beat over the
top at all. Those set kicks are side to side. His speed and first step on
reaction saves makes him one of the best goalie's in the MLS. Quit complainging
about his shut outs.
RSL may not score a lot of goals, and could certainly use a legitimate #1
striker, however, they are well organized, play attractive socccer and are fun
to watch. Jason Kreis, Robin Frazer, and the rest of the coaching staff deserve
a tremendous amount of credit for what they've done. In a short period of time
they've taken a team that throughout its short history had a hard time competing
and made it into a club that is capable of beating anyone, in MLS. Just ask New
England and Columbus, the top two teams in the league right now. Both have gone
home with a loss when playing RSL.
To "soccer sucks"You spent an evening watching a sport that you hate
because you got free tickets?? yours must be a very fulfilling and rewarding
life!!.As for my take on the match, Great match! Excellent result!! and I
hope to be at the next match even if it means paying for a ticket.
Even though nick gave up a goal he certainly has save a lot more. He is great!
The game was enjoyable and the players played hard.
A very exciting match last night. Even as a fan sitting far away in southern
Arizona, I was on edge the full 90 minutes. Great effort, and a very important
result. They showed that they deserved to be in the top spot last night.Cool that we're above .500. I mean that's a great accomplishment - even
if it means absolutely nothing in Major League Soccer.
I agree that rimando is too short. He is lucky to have borchers and olave in
front of him. When we gonna see the olympic athlete chris seitz get some
playing time??? :p
actually i can gaurantee 22000 strong will fill up rsl's new stadium on opening
day. Which is during football season. so thats 2200 people at least that will
care about soccer during football season.:o
Throwball starts in a month. until then stop posting on footballs forums
please.we know you think byu is going to win a national title but please
refrain from posting about it on our forums. Thanks
I would rather listen to a british announcer anyday over an american soccer
announcer. it actually sounds like british announcers know what they are talking
about. And to the person who said the real football starts soon.. The
american version of football is not the real football. Billions of fans of the
real football world will testify to that. as opposed to the millions in the
U.S. that think theirs is the real sport.good game RSL cant wait for the
first game at the stadium.
Just stop calling football throwball, or spheroid ball? The real football
season is only one month away, and then noone will care about soccer.
What an awful and boring game....I was there last night, with the other 500
fans, and watched a completely boring team play another boring team. Good thing
i got free tickets. It will be good when they get in their new stadium so it
doesn't look quite as empty!
I can't say Kenny Cutler is a great player, but he performs an important anchor
role for the team and has the tactical discipline others lack. Beckerman is a
two-way player and the team would lose too much energy and mobility to force him
out of his natural game, Kovalenko is tempramental and prone to errors which
hurts his ability in that position. It's a big shame Makelele went
to PSG, but I think the new stadium and real playing surface will attract a
better class of player.
Wonderfully put. This is soccer here, not football. There is no pitch, only
field. They play games, not matches. They wear uniforms, not kits. And they play
rivalry games, not derbies (with a pathetic accent, pronouncing it darbies). If soccer is going to get big, it's going to be on American terms, not
To the Brit with the attitude: I'll stop calling it a soccer game, not a
football match, as soon as you stop calling it the bonnet, not the hood, of the
car (or stop calling it petrol instead of gasoline, or bangers instead of
Man... it would be great to get a playoff game in that new stadium. Props to
the guys. And although the Offense has barely existed (ironic mostly because
Kries was a scoring machine in his day) I give props to Kries. The team seems
to have a heart, and it makes it sooooo much more fun to watch when the players
care. Who would've thought Jason Kreis would've gotten us this far at the helm.
Throw Prolate Spheroid season starts so I can tell Utefan and Cougar fan all
about the idiots that misnamed everything to do with their game. Touchdown?
What do they touch when they are down? BTW - GO RSL! At least Utah
finally has a winner!
Great comment! If soccer is going to grow in popularity here it can't sound
foreign and stuffy i.e. "pitch" and "match". These are U.S. soccer "teams"
playing great "games" and I can't wait to see one on our new "field"!
I have to say that this was a very entertaining competion between two teams very
equal in their overall quality. However, Marvell and Edu may have given TFC the
win or ties. I hate that. Our guys didn't have the best game, but got the win
when it was needed. From my math, I think that LA could get 6 total
points from their 2 games before RSL takes the feild again. Houston only plays
once, and are 4 points back. Chivas plays 3 games (3 in hand), but 2 are on the
road and the other is against LA, which limits the point totals when RSL comes
back. While LA and Chivas could get 6 points each, this just isn't going to
happen. RSL will still be in 1st when they take on Houston!
This is the US and we declared our independence quite a few years back.
Hopefully this independence alls include liberty from British soccer terms. As
Paul Gardner says in one of his blog entries on SoccerTalk, "The flat no-frills
English terminology is simply not up to reflecting the joys of soccer. (This is
a problem in this country, which tends to adopt English terms willy-nilly a
short time spent listening to the pathetically Brit-groveling announcers on Fox
Soccer Channel will confirm that.)" Perhaps we should think about using our own
terms to describe Soccer and not simply use those by our friends across the
pond. Our North American league is young and growing hopefully our verbiage can
grow with it to describe the play. We don't need to use "match," or "pitch" to
sound intelligent. Let's call it what we call it here. If not maybe we should
adopt Spanish terms as our neighbors to the south have a greater influence on
our sport than Great Britain.
Good to see you woke up today. We were wondering if you would shed your light on
us.Thanks for filling up our comment boards. Soccer is on the up
Typical match. Lots of movement and little action. The hi-lites wouldn't fill 10
seconds of a reel.
You are 100% right about Cutler. He is a waste. His teammates dont even look
to him. The only way they even pass to him is if he has noone around him and is
the LAST option and even then they will play it long alot. Morales will not
look to him at all. I could care less how hard he works at practice and all the
other blah blah blah Jason says about him. Its time he goes where he belongs
the USL. Andy played for Jamaica on Sat so that may be why he
came off the bench, but come on Cutler?!? Drop Dema back at holding mid and put
Wingert on the wing and start Beltran in back. Something other than Cutler. The
first half was bad because they wouldnt play out of the back because they (the
other players) dont trust Cutler, it went long and wide. Once Andy came in that
all changed. It took a minute but things opened up and changed. No more
CutlerOn another note Russell looks promising, another big body in
back that likes to get up into the attack. Look forward to watching him.
From watching the updates via the internet I grasped my head in disbelief when
RSL gave up a goal in the final 10 minutes. I thought, "they've reverted back
to their old ways." The end result, though, showed just how far this team has
come this season. The amount of improvement is incredible. Go ReAL!
It was a great game last night but sometimes I really wonder about Kreis. I mean
the team is doing well and he definitely deserves some credit. However, after
complaining for seemingly weeks about our lack of offensive production and
finishing, what is his response? He decides to play 3 defensive midfielders
together!?!You can't expect different results by doing the same
things. I would love to see Kreis mix it up with either a 4-3-3 lineup or maybe
even playing guys like Movsisyan and Espindola on the wings in a 4-4-2
formation. With the formations that RSL plays now, Wingert is the only guy on
the team that provides good service from the wide positions. We need to insert
more guys capable of making plays and providing service. Beckerman is a
defensive Mid and we need to play him there. Cutler needs to sit on the bench.
Dema needs to only come in to protect leads. RSL needs more playmakers on the
RE: Rimando too shortI don't think Rimando's height is the factor.
That free kick was buried in the upper 90. I don't know if even a lanky keeper
like Sutton could have been able to reach that ball with the pace it had on it.
Even the best keepers in the world get beat on free kicks if they have enough
pace and are placed in the upper 90.As for the game, what a way to
go out with a bang. When we gave up the free kick, I thought the game was
doomed for a tie, especially when Guevara hit the goal. Great team work to
fight back and get the quick goal back. I think that shows how RSL will not
give up until the final whistle blows.
When will you Brits stop referring to Americans as 'Yanks"?Yes, it's
a match and it's played on a pitch. But sometimes we revert to our white trash,
baseball-loving upbringing and refer to them as 'games' and 'fields'.And by the way, what a great 'game' last night......RSL sure left it all on
This was a great win for RSL! The team has come a long way this year.I agree that Rimando is too short. I highly doubt Seitz would have let that
free kick in. The one thing about Rimando that you have to love is his reaction
saves. But I would still like to see Seitz get some more games next year. Also, is it just me, or is Kenny Culter an absolute waste? How is it
that he continues to start/get playing time? Everyone in that stadium last
night could see the immediate impact Andy Williams made in the game. The second
half was much more entertaining, because Andy was out there working his butt
off, and actually making passes that acheived something. Cutler does nothing.
He is constantly marking a space near someone, he makes simple, safe and usually
back passes that go nowhere He creates nothing. It is so frustrating to watch
teams pass around him like he is not even there and he is supposedly a "holding
midfielder." I would love to see him actually commit to a tackle and look to
make a pass longer than 5 yards. Culter belongs on the bench.
What a great game. Olave is probably the best center back in the league. I'm, for one, happy that one of our wide backs has finally got an
assist. Isn't that a central part of our offensive plan -- to get Wingert and
Joy involved in the offense by serving balls in to our big target center?
While its a little unnerving to know that your left back and central back are
the ones with goals and assists, Beckerman and Findley were both dangerous last
night. Yura really needs to be on the bench. He had plenty of chances and plenty
of times that he didnt hussle for thru balls. Williams was great, and its always
fun to see Jeff C.I am real excited to leave RES and get to Sandy.
The countdown is on. Sept 20 is the last game in Salt Lake City!
I like nick rimando alot. He's made some fantastic saves for us and saved our
bacon on plenty of occasions. But last night, yet again, he allowed a goal on a
short free kick. It seems like any time we foul someone within 10 yards of the
box, they've got about a 70 percent chance of scoring on a free kick. The
reason? Rimando is too short! It cost us against the Galaxy earlier in the year
and it almost cost us again last night! Having said that, what a great game and
a great way to head into the break. GO REAL!
Re: Match vs. game...probably never.Ususally we refer to contests
between teams as games (baseball game, football game, basketball game), while
contests between individuals are generally refered to as matches (tennis match,
boxing match, match play in golf, etc.).In the overall scheme of
things, it's not a big deal.
Worst headline ever. We're now over halfway through year 4 of this
franchise. Pretty sure we can leave the name of the team alone and find
something new to make bad puns about.
Excellent work Real, way to keep your heads up and fight to the end! It was a
fun game to watch. Now enjoy your break.
When will you Yanks stop refering to Football Matches as 'games'?
Hopefully this gets Findley going. If Findley gets going and Espindola get's
healthy we should make the playoffs. We probably need at least 13 more
points for the playoffs. Hopefully the break allows everyone to get healthy and
ready to finish strong.
