Real Salt Lake: Real-ly above .500 after Monday night win
37 comments | Read story
We're now over halfway through year 4 of this franchise. Pretty sure we can leave the name of the team alone and find something new to make bad puns about.
Ususally we refer to contests between teams as games (baseball game, football game, basketball game), while contests between individuals are generally refered to as matches (tennis match, boxing match, match play in golf, etc.).
In the overall scheme of things, it's not a big deal.
I am real excited to leave RES and get to Sandy. The countdown is on. Sept 20 is the last game in Salt Lake City!
I'm, for one, happy that one of our wide backs has finally got an assist. Isn't that a central part of our offensive plan -- to get Wingert and Joy involved in the offense by serving balls in to our big target center?
I agree that Rimando is too short. I highly doubt Seitz would have let that free kick in. The one thing about Rimando that you have to love is his reaction saves. But I would still like to see Seitz get some more games next year.
Also, is it just me, or is Kenny Culter an absolute waste? How is it that he continues to start/get playing time? Everyone in that stadium last night could see the immediate impact Andy Williams made in the game. The second half was much more entertaining, because Andy was out there working his butt off, and actually making passes that acheived something. Cutler does nothing. He is constantly marking a space near someone, he makes simple, safe and usually back passes that go nowhere He creates nothing. It is so frustrating to watch teams pass around him like he is not even there and he is supposedly a "holding midfielder." I would love to see him actually commit to a tackle and look to make a pass longer than 5 yards.
Culter belongs on the bench.
Yes, it's a match and it's played on a pitch. But sometimes we revert to our white trash, baseball-loving upbringing and refer to them as 'games' and 'fields'.
And by the way, what a great 'game' last night......RSL sure left it all on the 'field'.
I don't think Rimando's height is the factor. That free kick was buried in the upper 90. I don't know if even a lanky keeper like Sutton could have been able to reach that ball with the pace it had on it. Even the best keepers in the world get beat on free kicks if they have enough pace and are placed in the upper 90.
As for the game, what a way to go out with a bang. When we gave up the free kick, I thought the game was doomed for a tie, especially when Guevara hit the goal. Great team work to fight back and get the quick goal back. I think that shows how RSL will not give up until the final whistle blows.
You can't expect different results by doing the same things. I would love to see Kreis mix it up with either a 4-3-3 lineup or maybe even playing guys like Movsisyan and Espindola on the wings in a 4-4-2 formation. With the formations that RSL plays now, Wingert is the only guy on the team that provides good service from the wide positions. We need to insert more guys capable of making plays and providing service. Beckerman is a defensive Mid and we need to play him there. Cutler needs to sit on the bench. Dema needs to only come in to protect leads. RSL needs more playmakers on the pitch period.
Andy played for Jamaica on Sat so that may be why he came off the bench, but come on Cutler?!? Drop Dema back at holding mid and put Wingert on the wing and start Beltran in back. Something other than Cutler. The first half was bad because they wouldnt play out of the back because they (the other players) dont trust Cutler, it went long and wide. Once Andy came in that all changed. It took a minute but things opened up and changed. No more Cutler
On another note Russell looks promising, another big body in back that likes to get up into the attack. Look forward to watching him.
Thanks for filling up our comment boards. Soccer is on the up and up.
From my math, I think that LA could get 6 total points from their 2 games before RSL takes the feild again. Houston only plays once, and are 4 points back. Chivas plays 3 games (3 in hand), but 2 are on the road and the other is against LA, which limits the point totals when RSL comes back. While LA and Chivas could get 6 points each, this just isn't going to happen. RSL will still be in 1st when they take on Houston!
BTW - GO RSL! At least Utah finally has a winner!
If soccer is going to get big, it's going to be on American terms, not British.
It's a big shame Makelele went to PSG, but I think the new stadium and real playing surface will attract a better class of player.
And to the person who said the real football starts soon.. The american version of football is not the real football. Billions of fans of the real football world will testify to that. as opposed to the millions in the U.S. that think theirs is the real sport.
good game RSL cant wait for the first game at the stadium.
we know you think byu is going to win a national title but please refrain from posting about it on our forums.
Thanks
:o
Cool that we're above .500. I mean that's a great accomplishment - even if it means absolutely nothing in Major League Soccer.
You spent an evening watching a sport that you hate because you got free tickets?? yours must be a very fulfilling and rewarding life!!.
As for my take on the match, Great match! Excellent result!! and I hope to be at the next match even if it means paying for a ticket.

We probably need at least 13 more points for the playoffs. Hopefully the break allows everyone to get healthy and ready to finish strong.
