I am almost giddy with excitement for the coming year. 2008-09 is the year we finally break into the BCS and win an outright national championship!

All because of a coach named Bronco.

Scotty Dew

What a stud, Bronco teaches these guys the importance of life in an eternal prospective, he makes them work so they can be successful on and off the field. My respect is off the charts for this guy

He's got the right stuff

Bronco is principle driven and now is showing a love and logic approach to coaching: accountability and responsibility builds better people and it will certainly build a better football team and more importantly it will build better people out of the young men both on the field and for the rest of their lives. I played under Coach Tidwell and Coach Mendenhall at Snow College and I can tell you that the players buy in because they see that he does not require anything that he is not giving himself. He would run with all of his DBs until they finished before him at the end of grueling practices. That's why we had one of the best defensive backfields in the country that year, he demanded it and invited his players to do it and then allowed them to step up to the challenge. He's doing it now and it is a great thing to watch. There will always be detractors and naysayers. I just love to watch them eat a little crow once in a while and I think this year will continue that trend. I would love to see the Utah/BYU be for all the marbles!

Thank you coach...

for keeping it all in perspective. We're truly blessed to have you leading our football program. Best of luck this year!!!

Long-time Fan

I really enjoy seeing the Y win football games, but even if they didn't, I'm proud to have Bronco with his philosophy and standards representing the Church!

Quest for Perfection

Any team with "Quest for Perfection" as its theme is headed for a poor season. Big expectations will distract them from focusing on the here and now.

Cougarettes lose three games this season.

Reality Check

Reality Check for Fred 'Fair-weather', I am giddy for football season to begin also. But remember, the Y only won UCLA in the bowl game on a last minute prayer, not a blowout, and it won't be any easier this year. BYU will lose to UCLA, Washington and Utah and see a dip in the overall win record for this season. Yes, Bronco is am impressive figure and deserving of respect from fans and players alike. You'd be better off letting the play on the field do the talking rather than look so incredibly foolish to be making BCS, National Championship predictions. Be sure to print out your/my post so 4 months from now you can have your reality check and see the accuracy of my prediction. Oh, and by the way, I'm a Y fan.

Nyron

I have long taught in my amateur coaching career that if you practice correctly you will play correctly. With TV being so prominent in the lives of sports figures of today, it is nice to see Bronco teach the principle of being a good man first, then the football skills will come. It will be a good year for the Cougars, regardless of the scores.

Bronco's "Title of Victory" will gain yet another accolade, BYU in the BCS!!!

Eugene

No predictions on the Y football season, but Bronco sounds like he has already won in the game of life. There are lots of great football players and coaches, but few that are great role models. Bronco is part of the few, not the many.

Way to go, Coach!

I am soooooo glad we got Bronco as our head coach.

Win or lose he is the right man for the job.

Of course winning makes it even all the more enjoyable.

Best of luck to the team and coaches.

Just keep making us grateful to be BYU fans!

Bob

I am once again happy to be a BYU fan. Whether we win or lose, it is BYU again. Thanks Coach.

I am not neary as worried about UCLA at home as I am Washington on the road. I think we will beat UCLA pretty handily since we are in Provo, but I don't think most BYU fans need reminding that Washington was the lone loss the year we played in the Cotton Bowl. I just hope it doesn't happen again. I have to concur with Bob, win lose or draw I'm proud to be a BYU fan again.

Reality Re-check

Uh, Fred fairwelter is a Ute Troll, not a BYU fan.

true blue

The reason Crowton wasn't successful at BYU is because he didn't realize what BYU football was all about, and brought in players that didn't fit the system. It's taken until now to bring in a complete defensive backfield. This year will be a good year, and BYU should end up being ranked in the top 25 at the end of the year. Next year should actually be the year for us.

Seth Gate

Whether the Cougars go undefeated or not this year you know that Bronco has done so much more for the program by puting in place a system of success that is unmatched by any other team in the country. For that, as the article has explained, he will continue to have his critics (which there are no shortages of) both internally and externally. Huge kudos to a guy who is focused on what really matters. Hopefully the reward follows the effort, because if it does BYU will be in a BCS title game at the end of the year, they earned it!

? for Cougs

Is Bronco Mendenhall considered a dispensation head in byu football history? LaVell?

RBC

I'm a huge Cougar fan but I'm hoping the Utes and Cougars are both undefeated when they meet in November. That game would draw huge national attention, be for a BCS bowl slot and show everyone just how special the state of Utah is. Of course the Cougars would HAVE to win, but what a game that would be! So between now and then I'm hoping the Utes run the table. I'm betting the Cougars will.

I am a die hard cougar fan. My first year at the Y was when Gary S, wearing number 12, was the Q-back. I watched the football team practice and immediately was impressed.

If all the expert critics will just (SIT) back and watch and cheer a "great missionary" program onward.

A clean and successful athletic program, no matter what the sport, does worlds of good for the Y and the church. I salute Bronco for his emphasis on the "whole" young man and not just football which is really only a means.

Ernest T. Bass

Why would he tweak anything, I keep reading that Bronco is already perfect.
In fact, if the soles of his shoes wouldn't disentigrate from the dirty water, he could walk across Utah Lake right now.
