Cory, I'm glad somebody had enough sense to find out what the rules are regarding a trade involving CJ, and the Sacramento trade would do wonders for the team if there is any truth to it.
Smart move | 8:09 p.m. July 25, 2008
It's not a bad move by signing CJ. I like the idea of putting him at SF. Sure, he is a little small right now, but his speed and athleticism will make up for that. Plus, he can hit the weights. I hate to lose AK because of his long arms, defense (he is the best defender on the Jazz), and all the intangibles he does, but he is getting overpaid. Trade AK and put CJ in at starting SF, use Harpring as his backup. Millsap will back up Boozer. The SG position will go 1.Brewer 2.Korver 3.Almond. PG is taken care of. We need to get rid of Collins and Fesenko and find a decent true center to back up Okur.

one of those surprising moves by the jazz... CJ has porential. but i haven't seen that the last 3 years he has played for the jazz. maybe the jazz management know someting we don't... still, it's a puzzling move retaining CJ

I don't understand why Jazz fans want a trade so bad. The Jazz have one of the best young teams in the league. They are just going to keep trying to invest in these young players too. My prediction is Jazz team has the same fifteen players when the season starts that hey have now.

Artest on the Jazz? Get real. Larry Miller is in the hospital not the grave. The Jazz trade their thugs not acquire more.

Can you spell traid?

CJ is a good player, and he plays good basketball. No doubt the boo birds will pick this one apart and say that it was foolish that the Jazz matched the offer. Problem is, those same naysayers would boo the Jazz if he went off to OKC and thrived (which he would) with plenty of playing time and little experience.

Personally, it seems like a wise move to me. It is a shame because Almond has shown such promise, so it's a tough call. If CJ is going to develop into a legit player, then another 3 years and around $12 million is a moderate price to pay, but I think it is worth the gamble.

I think that a trade might help the Jazz out the most. I don't question the Jazz move, but with so many people at the 2, the Jazz could address their interior presence.
Parkit | 8:43 p.m. July 25, 2008
It took me a little while to see an angle for this move with all the trade restrictions. I then compared Korver's regular season stats with CJ's. I have doubled CJ's per game stats since Korver played about twice the number minutes:

Korver CJ
Points 10 10
Rebounds 2 2.5
Assists 1 2
Steals 0.5 1
Blocks 0.5 0
FG% 0.443 0.479
FT% 0.915 0.778
3P% 0.375 0.390

Outside of Korver's free throw shooting CJ looks pretty good. Then when you look at shooting 3's he is better than our "deadeye" and of course a somewhat better defender. Perhaps Korver is the man on the way out??

Now I could be giving too much credit to Jazz management and we may have just forced a guy to stay that was recently blasted by Sloan for not showing up at the Revue and publicly stated that he wanted the chance to play with a developing squad like OKC to get some court time.
good young talent | 8:46 p.m. July 25, 2008
u people are idiots. Do you really think the jazz signed him to keep him on the bench yr after yr. he may not get a ton of playing time this yr. hopefully more than last. harpring will be gone next yr. he could be a good backup for ak if not take his spot within a yr. I don't see the jazz keeping ak, okur, booz plus pay milsap more money.
Here would be a good lineup in a yr or two.
Starters Backups
PG: Williams PG: Price
SG: Brewer SG: Almond
SF: Miles SF: Korver
PF: Boozer PF: Milsap
C: Okur C: TBA-Koufos, Fesinko, or other
seriously | 8:47 p.m. July 25, 2008
There have got to be some trades going down. Whoever said we are going to have problems signing Millsap and Brewer is exactly right. They both contribute a lot more and consequently are going to deserve more money. If we pay them more there is no way we can keep paying AK so much and resign Boozer, Okur and Korver. At least one of those 4 is going in the next year if not several of them.

As much as I love Harpring's style of play we need to trade him or let him retire at the end of the year.
No sign and trade | 8:47 p.m. July 25, 2008
NBA rules would eliminate the jazz trading CJ for at least one year. If there were a sign and trade, it would have already taken place with the Oklahoma City team. Good move by the Jazz.
Utah Jazzzzzzz | 8:48 p.m. July 25, 2008
There really are a bunch of morons commenting on this website. C.J. Can not be traded this offseason as part of a sign/trade deal per CBA rules. And Miles is going to continue to improve with increased playing time, which I am certain he will get lest the FO is pathetic enough to invest 11 million (at least) on a towel boy. Rumor has it however, that they are working on a trade that will land them Kaman from the Clippers. Do not know what to think of that if it goes down. Never seen Utah this active in the rumor dept. however, it is fun!
jahute | 8:59 p.m. July 25, 2008
i wonder. what do the jazz really think of him? they match a rather large offer yet they keep lowballing him with 1 year deals. why not offer him a reasonable deal in the first place? to keep making lower offers they were probably hoping no one else would offer because no one did last year. makes me think hmmm.
smart move1!!! | 9:05 p.m. July 25, 2008
this is the best offseason the jazz have done in a while, jason hart is gone, cj gets resigned, deron gets a huge extention. seriously im excited. cj will start the 3 by the end of the year i think, only cause AK is not worth his money and matt harpring will get hurt.
re:trade happy | 9:09 p.m. July 25, 2008
I think one reason is because Utah won't win a championship unless they get better defensively. Signing CJ isn't going to push Utah over the top. I think Utah is looking to trade for a defensive big man. I really don't have anything against Miles, but I don't see how Utah can will beat the better teams in the West with their team in it's current state.
jazz 1 | 9:10 p.m. July 25, 2008
bad move unless a trade with him is being planned. i wouldnt pay him 4 million to sit on the bench.
Anonymous | 9:14 p.m. July 25, 2008
This is exciting news! I think CJ has great potential. We need to give him a chance to grow.
Cory | 9:33 p.m. July 25, 2008
RE: Utah Jazzzzzzz,

Please don't call people morons when you obviously don't know the facts yourself. Please refer to my previous post, CJ CAN be traded this year to any team but OKC if he approves it. Considering he seems to want out I don't think there would be a problem moving him.
Dick of the NW | 9:39 p.m. July 25, 2008
Hey Posters, please read some of the other posts and gain some info before you just go blah, blah, blah, and blah. Some when provided the info about no trade for CJ unless he approves, just keep going on and on about a trade for CJ. The NBA has rules about trades and how salaries must be within a certain % of each other. Some act like there are teams out there just waiting for the Jazz to call so they can give up their best for the Jazz bench players. Make sense! Give the Jazz mgt. credit. They will do what is best for the team. It is all about WINNING and managing the salary cap!
SteveO | 9:42 p.m. July 25, 2008
Cory is right about the CBA rule that the Jazz can't trade CJ for a year without his permission.

However, he is wrong about a sign and trade because by matching the offer Miles now has a contract and you still can't trade him without his permission.
MR Wong | 9:40 p.m. July 25, 2008
I hope there will be a sign & trade
Brewer is gone | 9:53 p.m. July 25, 2008
because they brought CJ back. With Almonds great play in the revue, Ronnie will be sent packing.
Anonymous | 9:59 p.m. July 25, 2008
You just can't invest 3 years in a youngster with lots of potential and then let him go to a divisional rival without receiving anything for him. That would have been very embarrasing for Jazz management to say the least.
Besides, several posters here really underestimate Miles. How many guys do you think would have managed to play well with Sloan back and forth use of Miles?
CJ just belongs with the Jazz; besides, we're talking abut a guy thah even Sloan thought as a 20 year old starter. You have to trust front office on this one.
Deron likes CJ | 10:06 p.m. July 25, 2008
Anyone that heard Deron Williams' comments on the radio a couple of days ago knows that he mentioned how several players on the Olympic team really like CJ's game. I also heard the Kevin O'Connor interview when he mentioned that CJ could not be traded for at least 1 year after having matched an offer on him. Does somebody need to send Kevin a copy of the CBA?
Tuffy Parker | 10:44 p.m. July 25, 2008
Cory - Thanks for the research and insightful post! That sheds some interesting light on this deal. I can't envision where this makes financial sense long term with all the other needs we'll have next season as per many posts above. I'll be waiting with baited breath to see what KOC has up his sleeve.

Lots of potential but not much on the execution so far with CJ. I don't see him as being a member of the Jazz for long but I'll be the first to say pass the salt if I have to eat some crow...
JazzFanInHouston | 10:51 p.m. July 25, 2008
The Jazz do not have to deal with Brewer's salary until 2010 when he has a qualifying offer of 3.8 mil. Korver is under contract until 2010 at about 5.5 mil. Harpring's contract of 6.5 mil ends in 2009. Millsap has a team option for 2008.

In/by 2009 Boozer, Okur and Millsap will have to be dealt with. By then maybe Koufos will be playing some back up minutes.

If CJ is not part of a trade in the next couple of years he will probably replace Harp.

AK is at 16.5 in 09 and 17.8 in 10. The Jazz may have to be in the Lux tax for a year or two.
Mike W | 11:11 p.m. July 25, 2008
Terrible move given 1) The Jazz need every penny they can get next year when 3 FAR more important players will be up for new contracts (Boozer, Millsap and Okur) and 2) The position is so log jammed Miles will rarely see more than 5-10 minutes per game, and at that, where does Morris Almond fit in?

Nothing against Miles, at this point he's a decent ROLE player, but the Jazz can't afford to spend this money on a question mark at a position that is clearly Brewer's to lose, with Korver 2nd for the forseeable future.

I would ask the fans cheering this signing will you be ok with this next year when we don't have the necessary funds to re-sign Paul Millsap?
benny | 11:17 p.m. July 25, 2008
Thanks KOC! Excellent trade the other day now this, thank you.

Now step up CJ and prove us right for believing in you.

Trading Korver, Collins, maybe AK makes a lot of sense to me. Although AK did start playing better defense late in the playoffs....just so much money!

We now have enough offense for a championship but we've got to play better defense to win it all. Boston would have beaten the Jazz just like they did the Lakers. Boston gave the perfect example of excellent defense.

Jerry looks awfully tired this year, hopefully it's just that sweet younger wife.
svenerikson | 11:22 p.m. July 25, 2008
Artest? Whoever the troll was who proposed that one doesn't know the first thing about the Jazz. That is hilarious. While we're at it we might as well pick up Carmelo and Stephon Marbury!

Trading AK for Artest would be the best thing to happen to Sacramento since Sutter's Mill.

I get frustrated with AK like the rest of em, but unless you evaluate players solely on their ability to score points, AK is one of the best all-around players in this league.
CJ an Asset | 11:24 p.m. July 25, 2008
In the words of KOC, CJ is an asset. There will be no sign and trade because he can't be moved for 1 calendar year now. Jazz fans should get ready for life after AK...no one sticks with the same team for a pay cut when his deal is up.

There are now 15 players under contract...there will be more moves to come!
jazz fan | 11:26 p.m. July 25, 2008
Typical Jazz move, Give almond the chance and dump CJ. I would take a Morris Almond over Miles any day. Unless there is some kind of GOOD trade in the works, it is a joke to keep him. Keeping Miles would be like paying Collins more money and telling him he has a chance to start for the jazz. Here is to hoping the jazz do something or we will not be any better next year than we were this year.
TicketHolder | 11:31 p.m. July 25, 2008
"(g) After exercising its Right of First Refusal as described in this Section 5, the ROFR Team may not trade the Restricted Free Agent for one (1) year, without the players consent. Even with the players consent, for one (1) year, neither the ROFR Team exercising its Right of First Refusal nor any other Team may trade the player to the Team whose Offer Sheet was matched." This is a quote from the NBA Players association addressing ARTICLE XI: FREE AGENCY. Although it may be to advanced for some of you it basically boils down to the fact that CJ Miles can be signed and traded, with his consent, but cannot be traded back to the Jazz during that first year. Utah Jazzzzzz we don't want Kaman. He is slated to make 9,500,000 next year. Who do we give up to be with the 30%? Memo and Almond? The rest of the bench. That one will never happen.
Anonymous | 11:55 p.m. July 25, 2008
There better be some trade in the works. 15 guaranteed contracts and $4 million for a 12th man, even one with "potential" does not make sense.
SF, not SG | 12:00 a.m. July 26, 2008
Everyone who keeps mentioning the log jam at shooting guard needs to chill out. CJ isn't getting traded. Brewer isn't getting traded. Almond isn't getting traded. The key is that both CJ and Brewer can play the 3, and AK is already on the hot seat. Andre is all but gone, and Harpring can't handle a starter's minutes. There will be plenty of minutes at the 2 and the 3 for everybody left. Good move.
terrible move | 1:28 a.m. July 26, 2008
Signing CJ Miles back was considerably the worst move that the Jazz could have done he is going to be riding the pine behind brewer and korver. I think we should have not signed him and brang up Morris Almond. He is a better scorer than CJ and a better defender.
wayne | 9:32 a.m. July 26, 2008
4 million is better bate. package Harpering and collins with miles toss in a late 1st round pick and you get a nice playerand some room on the bench.
good move, | 11:19 a.m. July 26, 2008
as all people probably hate this trade, there is a reason they matched OKC's offer, he plays the 3 better than the 2, and the only 3s we have are AK and Matt Harpring......hes the most athletic guy on the team and he's only 21. when he's in there he plays great team basketball. you'll see almond get traded here in the near future (he's one dimentional like korver, too skinny, and cant play defense). also expect a trade with collins
pbrown | 1:14 p.m. July 27, 2008
For those people who think and want CJ to be traded he can't until next year its in his contract. The Jazz are going to keep their team together for at least this year. Alot of stuff will happen next year though
odogtriever | 4:07 p.m. July 28, 2008
I agree with those who say Miles is a three. He is being kept around for AK's spot. AK will be gone as soon as D-Wills contract starts in 09. Miles will be a good up and coming fill in for that starting three spot.

Great Move Jazz!!
