Even if the Y did get burned, which it won't, it would still look better than the "U"!

It's time to take those ugly letters off the mountain. For a state that acts so uppity about tattoos, how are these things any different? They're defacing their body, which was created by God. Tell me how it's any different.

It's ok...because its only 1 "Y", kind of like ear piercings.

What on earth does "peoples houses at stake" have anything to do with the validity of people's comments? One time I drove by the Y but I never got to hike up to it. I think that would be a good little hike to go see the Y. I think I could really ponder about life up there.

marking your body and marking a mountain are two totally different things....good grief people.

Sounds like those who are pointing fingers are no better than those they are calling self righteous...hmmm?

Uh yeah. So anyway...

I hate it every year when people use illegal fireworks and start fires. The fire started on the Y might have been done with "legal" fireworks, although they were used illegally, so it seems the same to me.

I know that stupidity is almost always a factor when fires are started by fireworks.

There is talk now about banning all fireworks. What do you think?

I don't think a total ban of fireworks is necessary, but I agree that the current illegal fireworks (i.e. airborn fireworks, etc) should be kept illegal.

Any thoughts? If we could ban stupidity, that would be better, but that is unfortunately impossible.

I wonder what it would be like to actually know some of you people who post comments on this site. "Letters on the mountains are just like tattoos!" "People's material possessions... The selfrighteousness is so strong in Utah!" You sound like dorks, which means you are dorks. You're passionate about things that aren't worth being passionate about. Go back to your .edu message boards. The rest of us are tired of you.

The tattoo analogy doesn't work. It's just a drive-by attempt by an underdeveloped mind. If you were to use the same logic that says you can't "tattoo" a mountain because building on it desecrates, then you would eventually have to say that you also can't build houses on the mountain or, for that matter, in the valleys, the desert, or anywhere else, for the very act of building a permanent structure upon the earth is a tattooing.

The comment also asks us to believe that within Mormon theology, the earth and the body are valued the same. They are not. The body is the temple of God, and the earth is for man's use. In that sense, a tattoo on the body is a defilement, a "tattoo" upon a mountainside is not a desecration.

So let's look at the comment for what it is; it is illogical and perhaps even sparked by the tepid prejudices of the author.

Just don't do fireworks where you aren't supposed to! Follow the laws, please! It's going to take years for that burned area to grow back to being all green. These people didn't use their brains!
