Meaningless | 7:42 p.m. July 21, 2008
This is all meaningless fodder for you junkies who can't get a life. The only thing that matters are actual results on the field. Who cares who thinks will be the best? In the end it won't be any of these guys.
I look forward to.... | 8:06 p.m. July 21, 2008

Prediction: | 8:17 p.m. July 21, 2008
Who can say BYU will lose a conference game this year? Based on the last 2 undefeated seasons in conference play, who actually can predict, without a doubt, that BYU will lose a conference game this year? Not even as a fan, but as a realistic individual person, I couldn't bet that BYU will lose a game this year. The odds are for them, whether you like it or not.

And how does someone say BYU is a community college, when it has nearly 8,000 more full-time students than the U? Sounds like the U needs to step up!

@ RE: Kitties | 8:25 p.m. July 21, 2008
From last year you state:

"Utah faces Oregon State (16), BYU (17), and Michigan (21).BYU faces UCLA (33), Utah (34), and Washington (55)."

So, you are saying your team, which had a much less difficult SOS and had a worse record along with it will beat BYU who had a higher SOS and who won more games? You basically said BYU is a better team than Utah so when Utah loses to BYU they will have a tougher SOS because Utah is so much weaker. That is a Utah fan's logic for you! Your powers of deduction are dizzying!

Utah should be, and I hope will be, good this year. The deciding factor is if they can get some consistency. That will not happen if they can't learn to channel their emotion into action beyond the BYU game.

BYU, Utah predicted to be MWC's | 9:43 p.m. July 21, 2008
Cool, now the games are meaningless.

That, or these meetings are.

Until Craig Thompson has the courage to step on the field to present a Conference Championship Trophy, the MWC is as impotent as he is.

Dang, over before the first Haka.

I guess I'll still watch the games anyway.
Seattle | 9:56 p.m. July 21, 2008
Utah certainly does deserve respect and BYU should be very wary of them. They certainly get up for the BYU game more than BYU gets up for them.

As regards these preseason player awards, I think they are stupid. People are actually acting like these players have earned something at this point.

The preseason media picks are for entertainment value only. I think those who are not picked get more motivation than those who are picked to win.

BYU should speak sofely and humbly and prove it on the field. Otherwise, be quiet.
Re: prediction | 10:04 p.m. July 21, 2008
The odds are with you? When was the last time byU went undefeated? The "odds" aren't with any team to go undefeated even if your team is Florida, Ohio State, or USC. USC has had the "odds" with them the past two years, and how did that work out for them?

Two years ago this is all I heard was: BSC this and BCS that coming from these same byU fans and coming from BECK and BROWN! The 2006 byU team had the same, if not better, "odds" and how did that work for them? At least the 2006 team had a defense, what does byU have returning for their defense this year? 3 players, get real about having odds!

Try winning on the road against A BCS team, one, before you say the odds are on your side! PS Locker and Washington is going to be a much harder game than you byU fans think! Washington had 7 4th quarter leads last including USC and OHIO State last year! If Washington can hang with "REAL" BCS teams, like USC and Ohio State, they are going to do good against byU!
I'm just a Rebel, but... | 10:05 p.m. July 21, 2008
We literally kicked the University of Utah out of Sam Reynolds Stadium last year, and they're picked 2nd and we're picked 9th???

What is this love affair the MWC has with BYU and Utah. Should the rest of us leave town and just let those two teams flip a coin?

Seriously, our kids are picked ninth, and that has to creep into their minds, making them think they lost before the game is even played.

Between this, The Mtn., and the Vegas Bowl, the MWC has to be the most poorly run conference in the country.

What a joke.

it will be interesting to see how long johnson stays healthy and how many running backs the utes go through by november oh well one excuse is as good as another provo still has scoreboard the last two years
Re: shame award | 10:22 p.m. July 21, 2008
From earlier,

The shame award goes to a team that gets killed when they are trying to go to a BCS game!

2001:

byU fans talked about suing the BCS and the fiesta bowl in 2001, "we are 11-0 and we are going to sue and boycott Tostitos chips".....I remember well.

What happened at Hawaii that year? 70+ points? Really 70+ points! Was this a basketball game or a football game? That is the most Shame game in the MWC history, the league had a chance to go to a BCS game and once again byU shamed themselves nationally!

Shame, what happened at Tulsa last year? 55 points? Once again was it byU basketball team playing?

Shame, what happened at home against TCU in 2005? Gave up 50+ points again? That is shameful!

You byU fans have no room to talk about UNLV, in the past 6 seasons byU has lost TWICE to UNLV. Once at home! You gave Utah the award for losing to UNLV, well that was the first time in 18 years. byU has lost twice to them THIS decade, that is shameful.
Who? | 10:37 p.m. July 21, 2008
Who owns the series the past 5 years, 10 years, 15 years? Who owns the overall record?

That is right: football has only been around for 2 years, and in 1984!

Have the past two years byU fans, because without 2 plays Utah would have a 6 game winning streak against byU! Wasn't byU favored by 10+ points in both of those games, and that was the fashion in how you won?

Excuses are excuses right?
I would love to see byU go 9-4 with:

Unga gone for the season.
Collie gone for the season.
Reynolds gone for the season.
Hall gone for 3 games.
Jan gone for 3 games.
Nixon gone for the season.

This isn't an excuse it is the Facts, Utah lost 1st team all MWC players in: Boone, Casteel, BJ.
They lost their starting LB, DT, RB!
Still went 9-4 byU would have won 3 games last year if that happened to them!
Just a rebel | 10:42 p.m. July 21, 2008
Sorry, Sam Boyd Stadium.

Too long at the tables tonight.
Utah byU | 10:40 p.m. July 21, 2008
Why will Utah win this year at RES?

Utah has almost the same defense as they had last year and byU has almost the same offense as they had last year. UTah held byU to 1 TD last year and 17 points at LES!

Utah will do the same thing this year, but what happens when Utahs offense has 9 returning starters and byU defense only returns 3 starters?!?!

Utah will hold byU to 17, again.
UTah will score 35 points on that inexperienced defense of byU.

Final score 35-17

Collie remembers the last time at RES, he remembers well....52-21
Chester Blue | 10:55 p.m. July 21, 2008
Whatever team that is undefeated will win the holy war this year because that team will have more at stake. I will not predict the score but I know which team has the best chance and that is BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY. Max Hall is as tough as nails and he won't go down because he's too tough. Our O-Line and D-Line will be the biggest difference maker which is usually the case in football on every level. Utah can have the most experienced DB's but what do you do when two Tongan diesels run at you? Robert Johnson already found out the hard way from UNGA! 29 first place votes is justified. Now it's time to for fall ball and just over a month away. BYU is too physical for any team in the MWC even if TCU and Utah have more speed. And don't forget about an incredible coaching staff at the Y. They will put our boys in a position to be an elite team in 2008 which will allow them to bust the BCS, a system that was created because of the 1984 BYU National Champs!!!
re:Who | 11:01 p.m. July 21, 2008
Who fills RES once every other year?

Who scored against UNLV last year?

Whose trophy case has a NC trophy, a Heisman, a Doak Walker, two Outland trophies?

Who has been nationally ranked more than not?

Who has two quarterbacks that have won Superbowls?

Who knows how to win, and not lose without the excuse of the "fashion" of how they won?

Who knows how to spell BYU, Utah, and Bronco without capitalizing letters in the middle and end of the word?

But, then you do win the award for number of excuses.

I sincerely hope you didn't go to any school in Utah. You sound like an idiot. I guess when all you have is cool, you have to rely on that instead of the record of your team. You say injuries aren't an excuse. I say Johnson is injury prone and is gun shy because of his. I hope Utah is healthy when BYU meets them because I am tiered of the non-excuses for Utah losing the game. Hmm... Was the guy covering Collie on 4th and 18 hurt?
Correction.... | 8:03 a.m. July 22, 2008
unlv beat the kittens both times this decade at home, 2002 and 2004. unlv is a joke. They beat us for the first time since the '70's and suddenly they should be considered a conference powerhouse? LOL!! You're lucky to still be in the league w/your record over the years.
Just a Rebel | 9:03 a.m. July 22, 2008
Nope, I think it's that the MWC knows that BYU has a larger church following than caring to get any of the teams involved, and if they make money, the conference makes money.

How do we blow out Utah, hold them scoreless, and and still get picked ninth out of nine.

"You're lucky to still be in the league"

It's not lucky to be in a league that figures out who is going to win before any games are played.

Idaho Cougar Fan | 9:08 a.m. July 22, 2008
First to Mike in Fallon NV, do you have the money to back up that claim? I find it hard to believe that the hate for the Cougars you have can cloud some ones judgment so bad.

Second, to all Ute fans complaining about injuries and all that garbage, shut up!! BYU lost 3 defensive starters before the season even started, they lost Gooch during the TCU game and Austin Collie had a bad ankle most of the year. Hall had a seperated shoulder and Fui wasn't full strength all year. Add to that that BYU's secondary were all former walk-ons and BYU still beat the Utes. Now BJ has to actually complete some passes against scholorship DB's that may be some of the best atheletes they have had in years down in Provo. Utah CAN beat BYU, but they WON'T and to say that everything being equal to last year and if Utes aren't injuried than Utah will wipe the floor with the Cougars. That is terrible logic (obviously not taught at the UofU) because BYU had just as many injuries and had to overcome same types of trails as any football team. BYU represented and Utah didn't.
Re:Chester Blue | 9:19 a.m. July 22, 2008
Can someone please tell me why fans claim that the BCS was created because of BYU's national championship 14 years prior to it being formed? Just wondering what the huge jump in logic is.
Re: Just a Rebel | 10:08 a.m. July 22, 2008
It is great that you support your team, but c'mon, what has UNLV football done in the last couple of years? True, UNLV shut Utah out last year, but that was a fluke; I was at the game and UNLV was playing out of their minds while Utah never seemed to have their heads in the game (maybe they spent too much time at the blackjack tables the night before).

If UNLV can put together a decent team, then it will receive proper recognition; until then, it has to be satisfied with predictions to finish near the bottom, as it has traditionally done.
FYI Ute fans | 10:48 a.m. July 22, 2008
"Just a Rebel" isn't a UNLV fan. S/he's a cougar troll. UNLV fans do not read the Deseret News. BYU fans in Las Vegas do, but not Rebels.

Since "Just a Rebel" didn't even know the name of UNLV's stadium, it's doubtful s/he's from LV. Since s/he's likely not from LV, s/he's likely to have never visited Sam Boyd. Cougar fans don't travel. Only LV Mormons go to UNLV games against the TDS.

Don't get sucked in by a cougar troll. Especially one as obvious as this one.

I think the "Shame Award" goes easily to the 2007 Yewtes. Did you hear me, SHUTOUT!!!! And then humiliated in the post game show by the coach of the worst team in the conference. Do I need to say it again, shutOUT!!!
Tarheel Ute | 4:59 p.m. July 22, 2008
Non-scientific odds:

Playing for the BSC Championship: Utah 1:1000k, BYU 1:10k
Playing in a BSC Bowl: Utah 1:10K, BYU 1:1000
Going Undefeated: Utah 1:10K, BYU 1:1000
Going Undefeated in MWC: Utah 1:100, BYU 1:100
Winning the MWC: Utah 1:10, BYU 1:5
BYU winning at RES: 2:3
Utah winning at RES: 3:2

Utah must get off to a good start, play above the competition, and avoid injuries to key players. The Wolverines will be licking their chops.

BYU must sustain their momentum from last year, avoid letdowns, and deal with increasing pressure. The Utes will be licking their chops.

I wish I could be a little more sanguine, but both coaches and their teams are over-rated and will not come close to fan expectations.

Here's to hoping for the best for both teams.
Re: Tarheel Ute | 5:47 p.m. July 22, 2008
What's the point of "Non-scientific" odds? Your random statistics are about as enlightening as those ridiculously rambling justifications babbling out of the fans from that TDS.
BCS for Cougars? | 11:42 p.m. July 22, 2008
Give me a break, the cougars in a BCS game this year is too far for the cougars to reach this year , with the sos horrible their playing Washington and a 7-6 Ucla team. GO UTES !!!!!!!!!!!
RE Yewt dbs | 11:15 a.m. July 24, 2008
Lets not forget which DBs were the best in the conference last year. 16.8 was the opponent scoring average against the Utes last year. I'll take it. Our pass defense will lead the conference again this year and 17 points wont even come close to being enough come november and once again you will be in the vegas bowl living in the past having lost one game and ruining your hope for a BCS bid.
