Class guy, I wish him all the best.

Beck is a class act--one of the finest, most underrated quarterbacks at BYU and just a nice guy. He's earned and is earning his shot at being an NFL star. Give him a good offensive line, and he will rock and roll.
beck is a perfect fit..... | 7:57 a.m. July 19, 2008
they both suck

Arrest the headline writer! That should be "optimistic ABOUT Miami's future."
Ernest T. Bass | 8:00 a.m. July 19, 2008
He'll be in the Hall of Fame.
beck is a perfect fit..... | 8:16 a.m. July 19, 2008
their both lousy and awful
Henne | 9:34 a.m. July 19, 2008
Try Henne playing by week 3 and Beck sits there with the clip board in one hand and a tissue in the other hand whipping the tears away from his face; crying once again!

The magic number is 1:
The number of times Beck beat Utah in 4 attempts!
The number of times Beck won a bowl game in four years!
The number of times Beck had a winning season in four years!
The NUMBER OF TIMES BECK CRIED ON TV!!!!!!!

What do you expect from a QB that fails in big games!! 1-3 versus your rival; isn't the rival game in where a player is suppose to shine?

Great leader: Cries, losses big games, can't have more than one winning season...., this is the person I would want to lead my team!

If Beck is so great then why did Bill Parcels draft Chad Henne in the second round this year?
Utes Rool | 10:00 a.m. July 19, 2008
Brian Johnson is a much better quarterback and will have a better season than that pretender Beck.
Utes Rool? | 10:23 a.m. July 19, 2008
Based on your spelling, I'm sure you're a Utah grad.

To "beck is a perfect fit ..." | 10:23 a.m. July 19, 2008
Once again, poor spelling outs a Utah grad. Try "they're" rather than "their."

Henne | 9:34 a.m.

You're forgetting something: it wasn't *just* Beck vs. Utah, Beck in a bowl game, Beck winning or not winning.

TEAM, dude. Football is a team game.

Parcells drafted Henne because no coach in his right mind would go into a season with less than three quarterbacks on the roster.

And correct me if I'm wrong...but isn't Chad Henne out of Michigan? (Do I even need to say the words Appalachian State?)

As long as we're talking about their past, I'd rather have a QB who has battled through adversity to improve himself and his team than one who had the biggest football program in the nation behind him, and spent his senior season repeatedly choking in losses to teams Michigan was supposed to beat.
Chill..... Seiously | 10:28 a.m. July 19, 2008
Do you guys HAVE to make it into a BYU-Utah thing? Can't you just be happy for a local product who has a big chance and wish him the best? Honestly, grow up. You sound like acouple of ten-year-olds.
ohio cougar | 11:38 a.m. July 19, 2008
use louie sakoda for trash talk before you use brian johnson/arceneaux.
Amen... | 12:24 p.m. July 19, 2008
to chill....seriously's comment. I'm cheering on Beck because I'm a BYU fan and a Utahn, and I do the same for any Ute that goes pro because I'm a Utahn.
come on | 1:12 p.m. July 19, 2008
what ever happened to that alex smith guy?
Utes Rool | 3:08 p.m. July 19, 2008
Alex Smith is 100 times the quarterback John Beck, or Ty Detmer, or any other goofball that ever played for the Coogz is. Really Coog fanz, get a grip and get back in your place as Utah reclaims its spot atop the MWC and in the BCS. This is the year Whittingham turns it around and the Coogz are exposed. Donko and his stripping warriors are going down.
Re: come on | 3:08 p.m. July 19, 2008
Alex Smith took over the worst team in the NFL in 2004 had growning pains his Rookie year but his second year (2006) he past for 3000 yards and had 16 TD's and almost lead the 49ers to the playoffs!

It's Becks second year now and he also has the worst team in the NFL; lets see if he can turn the team around and almost make the playoffs! Let see if Beck can throw for 3000 yard and 16 TD this year! This will be hard for Beck to do when he is benched the third week of year and Henne is starting, at least beck can cry about it again: "we are trying our hardest" boo hoo.
RE: Grammar Police | 5:21 p.m. July 19, 2008
Looks like the headline changed from "optimistic ON Miami's future." The grammar police can retire for doughnuts now.

Utes and Cougs, lighten up. Here in the Pac-10, we know our football well enough to know that a bad team can still embarrass a good QB. So who knows what either Alex Smith OR John Beck can really do? And does it really matter? You people are the only ones who care, and I'll bet you all have better things to do.

By all means: You guys keep up your ugly squabble about whose ugly sister is ugliest. Out here, we play FOOTBALL. Shut your mouths and play the game, people.
all you commenting people. | 6:01 p.m. July 19, 2008
What team to you play for in the NFL? Nobody can suck, and play college or even start in high school. You people dont know what your talking about. Keep sitting in your chair watching football, and playing madden. Thats the best at football that you will ever be.
Utes Drool | 6:18 p.m. July 19, 2008
Lets compare BYU QB alums who were successful in the NFL vs. the Utes. Any Super Bowl winners for the Utes? (I actually don't know) BYU has at least two. I hope Alex smith, John Beck and all MWC/WAC players in the NFL succeed. They already have a good rep (M. Faulk, L. Tomlinson). And by the way, does the Pac-10 really know how to play FOOTBALL? Wow!
RE: Utes Drool | 8:59 p.m. July 19, 2008
Let's just say this about Pac-10 football: If either BYU OR Utah were facing USC, ASU, or Oregon this year, NOBODY would be mentioning either of them in the same sentence as "BCS" with a straight face.

Cougars: If you can get past Washington and UCLA, that'll have to do. Northern Iowa and Utah State don't exactly scare anybody.

Utes: Good luck with Oregon State. Oh, yeah, Michigan, too. On the far-from-scared-silly list: Weber State and Utah State.

If you want to get in the BCS, EARN IT. Especially BYU. As the rankings stand now, the Utes play the tougher schedule. So they won't get there. BYU might. But if the Cougs get into and win that still-hypothetical BCS game instead of pulling a Hawaii, I'll change my tune.

Finally--John Beck and Alex Smith would have both played in the Pac-10. As backups. And that's not trash-talk--I don't go in for that sort of thing. Just the truth as I see it.

That's all!
Tony K | 9:32 p.m. July 19, 2008
Alex Smith isn't a good QB.
He's not the best QB on his own team.
He's also not even the best "Alex Smith" in the NFL!

He did get rid of his stutter, though. A good, hard sack will do that to you.
Kramer | 11:36 p.m. July 19, 2008
John Beck and Alex Smith would have played back up in the Pac-10? You are a fool!! How many of the great Pac-10 QB's went before the fifth round in the 2008 draft? Answer: none! 2007: one!(Trent Edwards, Stanford (Pac-10 powerhouse?), rd 3). And yes, BYU will have to earn a BCS bid-just like everyone else. Is there any danger of them getting in without earning it? So Hawaii flopped-you don't know until you play the game-Boise State proved that. The truth as you see it? No trash talk? Whatever! Shut YOUR mouth and watch the games, fool.
Walt | 1:40 a.m. July 20, 2008
First, I agree with the Pac 10 guys...we are bickering back & forth like we always do. Both Utah & BYU are great football programs & hopefully we will beat Washington & UCLA and the Utes will beat Michigan & Oregon State and we both come to our game against each other undefeated. Now to address "Re: Come on": Alex did throw for 16 TD's, and he had 2,890 yds not 3,000, But, what you did not mention is that he also threw 16 INT's, had a QB Rating of only 74.8 & the Niners were a dismal 7-9. ou are also correct in saying that they almost made the playoff. Actually,t After his first three years here are his overall stats: PCT = 54.4; YDS = 4,679; 19 TD's & 31 INT's; and a QB rating of 63.5. Word from the Bay Area is that this is his last year to prove his worth under a new offensive coordinator or he is gone!
Hey, Kramer | 7:20 a.m. July 21, 2008
Tone it down on the "fool" stuff. You yourself are taking one substandard draft year as if it were evidence that the Pac-10 doesn't have quality QBs? Surely you've heard of Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer, Dennis Dixon, Rudy Carpenter, Willie Tuitatama, etc.--all superb past/present Pac-10 QBs, and who neither Alex Smith nor John Beck would have beaten out. EVER.

Those are facts, my friend. Calling somebody a fool and telling them to shut their mouths is trash talk. But that's OK for you, if you'd rather embarrass yourself. The Pac-10's record speaks for itself.
