Most BYU fans would love to see Beck succeed but one has to believe if he
doesn't produce this season he will be riding the beach as a backup the
rest of his NFL career. This Cougar fan wishes that Beck was in a situation
like Alex Smith in SF with Mike Martz. Beck is so much better than Smith in so
many ways. He just wasn't drafted in the right season and is with the wrong
team. Maybe the big tuna will have faith in him and let us all see how great
this kid can be.

You are right on the money, I can't believe these NFL scouts aren't
smart enough to figure out that the more BYU players you have on a team, the
better your team is. They should get every cougar available. Now that's a
recipe for success. Then they could win the national championship in 1984 too.
The fact that Alex Smith is 10 times the athlete John Beck will ever be,
probably had nothing to do with him going #1.

If John doesn't get the chance to shine at Miami and they end up shipping
him out, I am pretty confident he will succeed wherever he ends up. He's
obviously a very hard working guy and determined to succeed, and I believe he
will.

Why is Alex Smith's name appearing in a comment about John Beck? There was

I've been a Dolphin fan since 1968 through all of their ups and downs. Now
that they like seven LDS players on their team, and since Utah doesn't have
our own pro football team, we should adopt the Dolphins as Utah's proxy
team. A win by Miami is a win for Utah! Go Dolphins and John Beck!

Alex Smith is not that great of an athlete. He was simply in the right place at
the right time and was #1 because Matt Leinart ended up staying at USC for
another year. Had Leinart come out Smith would have dropped like a rock in the
draft. He has been horrible at SF and and when he is benched this year will
never start in the NFL again - bet on it. John will struggle early like he did
at the Y and will be the better player between the two long term. Speaking of
QB's in the NFL - how many has the Y had and can you name another one other
than Smith?

You make no sense at all. First of all, BYU has never gone to a BCS game, so how
can they go to a BCS game "again" this season. Secondly, if BYU does
win every game they will go to a BCS game. Thirdly, BYU does bring in a lot of
money because their fans travel so well and many bowls would love to have BYU
and its loyal fans attend.

Beck is the real deal and will prove it this season with the fish. He is the
best QB to come out of Utah in the past 10 yrs. Now before you Utah fans pounce
on me about Smith hear me out; Smith was in an offense that inflated his numbers
while John was a consistant producer and played for a better pro like offense
than the 2004 Utah team. Alex Smith is a nice guy if the misled youth need to
have someone to go bowling with but Beck is better and within two years Smith
will be out of the NFL.

Alex Smith shouldn't even be mentioned here. But Beck and Smith
haven't had a fair shot really. They both have horrible offensive lines to
work with. To judge Smith and Beck isn't proper. They are doing what they
can under very trying circumstances. Some people have to make everything a BYU,
U of U thing which is plain stupid. It is hard to believe the naitivity of some

There was Scott Mitchell, who started out with the Miami Dolphins and played
several years with the Detroit Lions. He was probably better than Alex Smith.

Doing grad school in Miami I watched Beck up close last year. I wanted Beck to
do well, to reflect well on the MWC because down here in SEC/ACC territory,
there is no respect at all!! But Beck was awful, 8 turnovers and 1 touchdown
pass. True there was no line, no real recievers, but there were alot of teams
with no line and no recievers that won more than one game. The issue with Beck
began on draft day when the Dolphins passed on Brady Quinn in the first round,
and got Beck in the second. The public thinks that Quinn is so much better than
Beck.(I don't) But with Beck's turnovers, and not leading the team to
a single victory, the local meadia killed him. (and the rest of team) It
won't be easier this year, even with Jake Long, the O-line isn't
anything special, and with out a decent reciver, look for a lot of Ronnie Brown
and Ricky williams.
There is hope though, if Beck can win the starting job, win 4-6 games, then he can be the next Marino. Most situations in the NFL aren't fair, and nobody cares. Beck must make this happen.

To understand why BYU WILL go to the BCS If they go undefeated is really
simple.
The BCS is a scam. It is pretty much a solid violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890. The only way that the BCS can keep Congress and the courts off their back is that any non-BCS team that goes undefeated will play in a BCS game. That could be BYU, Hawaii, UTEP, Utah State, doesn't matter. The moment an undefeated team isn't invited and all BCS slots go to BCS teams the gig is up.
The real advantage that Beck will have over Smith this year is The Big Tuna. Parcell realizes that the game is won or lost in the trenches. Everywhere he goes the first thing he does is beef up the offensive line. He takes a bunch of veteran journeyman and always gets more out of them than they are worth. Once he has the O-line outperforming their resume, everything else will improve.
Once the offense can sustain long drives, the defense gets a rest the defense will even improve. They may not win a Super Bowl but they will improve. And Beck is the beneficiary of this.

Beck will develop with time. It is asking a lot to throw a rookie QB into the
end of a bad season and ask him to lead the worst team in the NFL.
Even if Beck does not get the starting job, he will compare well with whoever is QB for that team. Beck gets some national press. It is not all negative. There are questions about if he is ready. Most people recognize that he has talent.

John Beck Stats: 1 TD / 3 INTS / Rating of 62.
Neither player had even respectable seasons. Smith hasn't had a respectable season yet. I doubt he will get another chance. Beck probably as 1 year to prove he can play.

"GOLF".
Secondly, New Uniforms will make you run faster and jump higher.
Don't lead any end of game drives, and score on the last play of the game. Even if you win, it's still considered a loss. (I know, Elway, Montana, and Young did it alot, but it still doesnt make it a win).
Last of all, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT live your right on or off the field!!!
It really hit's peoples buttons (of course in the pro's they do mention and thank God, so maybe that's OK at the next level. It's just that a lot of fans in this State - I don't want to mention the school because this is a story about professional sports, and not a silly rivalry when you were in college) but they don't understand life outside of the state, and haven't had much experience with Football Players making at the professional level.
Oh, and it doesn't matter if you're held scorless by a weak-team, you can still be better than the winner of the Super Bowl by beating a team they lost to.

great QB's have struggled their rookie season and maybe he won't ever
get the break he is looking for. For being a great QB a lot of it comes down to

Young came out a nobody, and backed up Joe Montana, but his college years prepared him.
When the Buccaneers selected University of Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde first overall in the 1987 NFL Draft, Young was deemed a bust and traded to the San Francisco 49ers on April 24, 1987, to serve as a backup to Joe Montana. The Buccaneers received 2nd and 4th round draft picks in the trade, which they used to draft Miami linebacker Winston Moss, and Arizona State wide receiver Bruce Hill, respectively. Young would spend the final 13 years of his career with the 49ers.

Subbing for an injured Montana early in the first quarter of a 1987 game against the Chicago Bears, he threw 4 touchdown passes in a 41-0 victory. In a 1988 game, the scrambling southpaw shredded the Minnesota Vikings for a 49-yard, game-winning touchdown run. He started the game out with a 73-yard touchdown pass to John Taylor, after Montana went down with an injury. The scramble for the game-winning score was highlighted by announcer Lon Simmons's reaction, "Young, back to throw, in trouble. He's going to be sacked. No, gets away...He runs...Gets away again! Goes to the 40...Gets away again! To the 35, cuts back at the 30! To the 20...the 15...the 10! He dives! Touchdown 49ers! Young is exhausted! He stumbled as he got to the 2. He could barely move. career completion percentage (64.3%) is the third-highest ever for qualifying

In 1999, he was ranked #63 on The Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. Young was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on February 5, 2005 and was enshrined August 7, 2005. His induction speech was given by his father, LeGrande "Grit" Young.

He peppered his name all over the Brigham Young record books en route to become
the second-all time leading passer in BYU school history. That truly could end
up being one of John Beck�s most impressive feats at BYU,
becoming the second-all time leading passer at a school that is so tradition
rich at the quarterback position. The likes of Steve Young, Ty Detmer, and Jim
McMahon all have suited up for the Cougars in Provo and John Beck is lucky
enough to say, in terms of total passing yardage, he�s
second only to Ty Detmer. He also finished second in BYU history in total
offense with 11,059 yards over his career in Provo. He plastered his name all
over the Mountain West Conference record books, becoming the MWC career record
holder in nearly every major passing category: total offense (11,059 yards),
passing attempts (1,418), completions (885), passing yards (11,021 yards), and
touchdown completions (79 touchdowns). Those are very impressive feats because
legendary quarterbacks like Utah�s Alex Smith have recently
come through the MWC ranks. BYU offensive coordinator Robert Anae said, "I
can link him right up there with some of the best".

It is pretty funny because this kid was truly just a
�natural born football player�. He
began throwing spirals with a football at age two! So many members of the media
and fans love talking about JaMarcus Russell�s arm
strength, well here�s a tidbit for you, sitting on his
knees from the 47 yard-line John Beck once tossed a ball through the uprights in
BYU�s indoor practice facility! If that
doesn�t demonstrate his freakish arm, then maybe the fact
that he can throw the ball 75 yards regularly while standing on two feet does!
His wrists must be made of iron, because he flicks the ball effortlessly across
the field, placing it right where it should be, where only the receiver can make
a play with the ball.
I could write a novel about John Beck and his immense football talent, but I�ll let him do the talking on the field after he surprises the so-called �experts� in the next few years. I have seen more people jump on the John Beck bandwagon lately, but trust me, I don�t think it is enough because this guy is much better than many people in the media are giving him credit for.
