My mom bought me a tight fitting very light pair of sneakers once...

I was Super Fast!

Shows the lack of common sense floating around in Brian Johnsons head... Nice comment... HA HA Ha Ha Ha

"As an avid BYU fan, I'm thoroughly enjoying the trend."

Two years does not a trend make. Take a class in statistics for crying out loud. Do they even offer that in Provo?

Kyle Whittingham | 5:26 p.m. July 17, 2008
This is Kyle Whittingham. I'd like to announce that we will no longer allow stoners inside the stadium to watch our football games. We don't want the new unis to stink like our fans. I realize this might cut our attendance down to below 100, but we feel that protecting our exciting investment in Under Armour uniforms is more important than having fans at our games. Besides, it's not like we get many fans out anyway.

Sincerely,

Coach Whittingham

Crimson | 5:42 p.m. July 17, 2008
BYU did change their shade of blue, but at least they don't still claim to have the old shade. The Utes have not worn crimson for like 20 years. The shade of red they have now is not even close to crimson. And yet, the genius Utah fans keep touting their "crimson" and bashing on BYU's colors. Educate yourselves.

By the way, you're all right about the black. They'd look great, and it would complete Utah's hijacking of the colors of their big brothers at Southern Utah University. Bring out the black!
Mark | 5:51 p.m. July 17, 2008
@Choose the Right. You wrote "President Hinckley and President Monson graduated from Utah, what does that say about your perfect little world?"

Actually, Pres. Monson graduated from both schools, getting his advanced degree from BYU. And a more relevant question for today is "Where did the children of the prophets go to school?"
Levin | 5:53 p.m. July 17, 2008
Here's the important part of the article:

"They're tighter and lighter," said Johnson, "so I can run faster."

Let's hope that's true.

Here's the best case scenario for November 22: BYU and Utah undefeated, and Michigan with a single loss (to UofU) going into undefeated Ohio State. Rivalry Week indeed. ESPN GameDay producers pull their hair out, and the Dish Network satellites spontaneously explode out of pure envy.

RE: UNLV RULES | 6:03 p.m. July 17, 2008
I'm guessing the post titled "UNLV RULES" is a Team Down South fan possing as a UNLV Fan, thinking he's tricky.

Because #1 UNLV fans aren't as pathetic as some of those from the T.D.S. who try and post smack on a story about another teams new uniforms.

#2 UNLV Football fans wouldn't dare talk smack about there one lucky win over the Utes; especially with there lack of football success. Even they're smart enough to know it was a fluke and the Utes simply overlooked them.

#3 Obviously a fan from the T.D.S. wanted to lash back because someone brought up the fact that they switched to the colors of Utah State's uniforms because there old sky blue color was too effeminate.
bleedblue | 6:16 p.m. July 17, 2008
Re:Re:UNLV Fans

so, you think the royal blue look was effeminate? What does that say for your yewts who were routinely trashed by Cougars wearing the "effeminate" blue from the 80s and 90s?

Your yewt education is shining through. Learn how to use "their" correctly, and take it like a man when UNLV beats you in your own house in front of 15-20,000 fans....

ugly, ugly unis. I thought UTah could have done better with its look....
'nough bashin | 6:25 p.m. July 17, 2008
personally i like the new Ute jerseys, as the last three years they never matched the helmet lol...but regardless of what uniform they are wearing on november 22nd i can almost guarantee every byu fan that my UTES will be byU's biggest challenge of the season and that game will be the bcs deciding game for both schools (that is if byu doesnt choke against inferior pac 10 schools and my Utes can win a road opener)... also Darell Mack>>>>Harvey Unga...

GO UTES!!!
Math - not a YEWT's strong point | 6:38 p.m. July 17, 2008
How does going from 4 losses to the Yewts from 2002 - 2005 to two wins over the Utes from 2005 - 2007 not constitute a change in the trend?

I guess if you are a Ute fan, it doesn't, but to all other properly educated individuals (USU, Weber, SLCC, UVU, BYU, SUU, Dixie grads, etc.) that is indeed a change in the trend!

Regarding RESTORE ORDER!'s post at 12:08, how does BYU and Utah go from playing 15 football games from 1993 to 2007 and 38 basketball games during that same timeframe to 13 football games and 34 basketball games respectively???

This one's a little tougher, my dear Ute friends, so take your time, but if you try really hard I believe you can come up with the answer.

If you can't figure it out and start losing sleep over it, let me know and I am sure I can get some tutoring for you from my 9 year old. She has a pretty good grasp of mathematical concepts, though I am not sure you will be able to afford her rates.

Re: Ute in Philadelphia | 7:22 p.m. July 17, 2008
BYU is very well known in Philadelphia for it's football program through a couple of players named Vai Sikahema and Chad Lewis. The same can't be said for Utah football.

"How does going from 4 losses to the Yewts from 2002 - 2005 to two wins over the Utes from 2005 - 2007 not constitute a change in the trend?"

Simple. Two data points does NOT constitute a statistically significant sample. You'd know this if you had ever taken statistics. Again, I have to ask if they teach that class down in Provo as opposed to obsessing over athletics and bronze-age religious texts.

Allow me to remind all the zoobies that their last six games against UNLV, the TDS is only 4-2 against the rebels, with a 24-3 loss to the Rebels in 2002 and another loss to them in 2004 BOTH IN PROVO.
Children of the prophets?!? | 8:07 p.m. July 17, 2008
@Mark 5:51 Who cares about the "children of the prophets"? That is a completely irrelevant question! Last I checked the "children of the prophets" weren't any different than any other church member. Anyway, children of GAs probably get free or reduced tuition because their father is a GA and thus on some sort of board for BYU. It's a good education, why not go there? By the way, how do you know that all the "children of the prophets" (or GAs) go to BYU or are you just making a self-serving assumption?

There have been apostles and prophets who have graduated from all three of Utah's major universities (Utah, Utah State, BYU) and this trend will undoubtedly continue. Surely you are not suggesting that attending BYU makes anybody a better member of the church or that the most righteous people attend BYU, are you? That is the only way your comment makes sense.

The point of CTR's comment was to shed light on the stupidity of the comment by "Restore Order!!!" Thank you for shedding further light on that bone-headed comment by adding one of your own.
Ute in Philadelphia | 8:14 p.m. July 17, 2008
Re: Ute in Philadelphia | 7:22 p.m.

Spoken like a TDS fan NOT from Philly.

Back here, Sikahema and Lewis are known as former Eagle players. Not former cougar players.

Incidently, in the spring of 2006, on the Preston & Steve Show (WMMR 93.3 FM), I heard VAI SIKAHEMA say he felt the '04 Utes were the REAL #1 team that year.

Re: Re: Ute in Philadelphia | 8:25 p.m. July 17, 2008
..And Utah football is known in North Carolina for Steve Smith. What's your point? I think the most recent impression Philly fans have of BYU is Reno "Fumble Fingers" Mahe.

BYU is recognized because of the LDS church, and not because of athletics. Ask almost anyone to say one thing about BYU and they will say "Mormon" and not "football" or "basketball" That's as it should be. Anyone who argues otherwise has their priorities mixed up. Yet another reason BYU needs to drop athletics. More people know about BYU athletics because of the LDS church and not the other way around. I actually have seen more damage to character and missionary efforts because of athletics (see evidence above).
bleedkentuckyblue | 8:29 p.m. July 17, 2008
I know a few GAs children, and you're partially right about admission. I can't remember if it is anyone who works for the Church or just anyone who works for BYU, but they do get reduced admission. THis is much like those who work for the U., get their kids 50% off U. tuition.

I'm sure a great many GAs children go to the Y., but I met president samuelson's daughter-in-law a year or two ago in Arizona, and she told me the reason why her husband chose not to go to BYU had nothing to do with the quality of education, but got sick and tired of others telling him he was only there because of who his parents were, so he went to Arizona State so he could say he earned his education....

while I hate the utes and these unis are worse than they were, the all-red is a great idea... the all-white, not so much
Re: Anonymous | 8:55 p.m. July 17, 2008
Are we actually fighting over statistics here? Ok, here are some statistics for you:
1) BYU has gone undefeated in conference play for 2 years in a row, the only MWC team to do that in the history of the MWC (that includes Utah!)
2) Max Hall had the highest passer rating last year in the MWC and among all sophomore quarterbacks in the nation! (And higher than Brian Johnson from Utah)
3) Harvey Unga had more rushing yards last season that Mack from Utah (And Mack looks ugly in the new uniform! Definitely a dud!)
4) BYU has never lost to Utah in Salt Lake City under head coach Bronco Mendenhall. (We are 1 for 1!)

Any arguments with those statistics?

PS: Yes, BYU offers the class Stat 221, and I passed it!
Scrawny Players | 8:59 p.m. July 17, 2008
Johnson looks like a twig in that picture!! How do the Utes expect to compete with the Cougars with players that are skin and bone?!
Re: Philadelphia | 9:04 p.m. July 17, 2008
Uh...I believe the Eagles Head Coach is Andy Reid, correct? And which University did he attend? Oh yeah, BYU. Just checking. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Silly Kewgar fans | 9:16 p.m. July 17, 2008
Repeatedly pointing out errors by Ute fans in grammar, spelling, and math while ignoring the FACT that there are just as many, if not more, errors made by the byU faithful.

Oh well, after byU "looses"(as byU fans think it is spelled) to Washington, UCLA, New Mexico, TCU, and Utah, all of the kewgar fans will be able to look forward to basketball season . . . . . oops, my bad. byU isn't going to be very good on the hardwood either.

November 22: Utah 34 byU 23 and the Utes will sweep the basketball series this year.

Andy Reid, yes, that's right. Another former BYU player who doesn't want to coach at BYU!!
Anonymous | 10:43 p.m. July 17, 2008
Hey "Silly Kewgar fans", please refresh my memory - what is Utah's record against BYU the last two years in both football and basketball?

I know, you ALMOST beat us in football, so there has to be a "moral victory" there somewhere.

Or would you rather talk about Utah's record against BYU from 1900 - 1960. That has got to make you feel pretty good.

Win a time or two and maybe you have something to yap about.

In the meantime, focus on women's basketball or gymnastics at the U. I understand they are pretty good.

TucsonUte | 11:49 p.m. July 17, 2008
Gotta love the all white uniforms! Better than those awful BYU uniforms during the Crowton era and the Aggie Blue of today's TDS.

BYU fans love stats but the overall series record speaks for itself. That is the only stat that matters. Not the ones that BYU fans quote like "Do you know BYU holds an edge overall against Utah in games that were played during a leap year and also occurred during a lunar eclipse" or "BYU holds an overall series record against Utah when cougar concession stands sellout of root beer by the end of the first half".

It's going to be a long disappointing season for BYU.

seriously | 12:21 a.m. July 18, 2008
people dont need to judge a school based on the uniforms, seriously, you have enough time to say 'hey lets bash on Utah's new uni's just because we think that they look bad, to some people they might. i personally like them better than our old uni's.........both byU and Utah fans are idiots for bashing on each other's schools when in fact they can do NOTHING ABOUT IT (myself inlcuded).....that being said, November 22 is going to be one Heck of a Football game, regardless of who wins, what uniforms they are wearing, and how bad or good each team plays. I just hope they U can come away with a win cause we know that byU is tough.

GO UTES!!!!

I guess that no one will be sleeping in Yooterville tonight

To the Honorable:RE: UNLV RULES | 6:03 p.m. July 17, 2008

"#2 UNLV Football fans wouldn't dare talk smack about there one lucky win over the Utes; especially with there lack of football success. Even they're smart enough to know it was a fluke and the Utes simply overlooked them."

Is that why the coaches and players were laughing so hard watching game films??? Won't "dare" to talk smack about a team they demolished. Is laughing talking smack?

Hey, UNLV beating the yooterville yoots 27-0, then got crushed by a team that had nothing to play for, oh and the final was 48-23 and the Rebels gave up 21 points in the 4th quarter, call it luck, call it a fluke, I call it embarassing.

BYU Wins on the Harline play, Collie's 4th and 18, blocked FG vs. UCLA (3 BIG W's.), yoots call it a fluke, luck.

Get smoked 27-0 for the L... Fluke too.

I guess it's BYU wins = Fluke.
Utah loses = Fluke.

By your count, take out the flukes, yooters went undefeated, and BYU lost all of their games.

BYU ranked #14?

Fluke, too.
UNLV vs Smack | 1:58 a.m. July 18, 2008
2006 Utah 45 UNLV 23
2005 Utah 42 UNLV 32
2004 Utah 63 UNLV 28
2003 Utah 28 UNLV 10
2002 Utah 28 UNLV 17
2001 Utah 42 UNLV 14
2000 Utah 38 UNLV 16
1999 Utah 52 UNLV 14

1983-1998 did not play each other

1982 Utah 24 UNLV 14
1981 Utah 69 UNLV 28
1980 Utah 45 UNLV 29
1979 Utah 41 UNLV 43

Overall series, Utah leads 11-2. All these zoobies insisting Utah "Can't" bean UNLV are only further advertising how deluded and out-of-touch with reality they are. Yes, 2007 WAS a fluke.

Conf champs trend | 8:17 a.m. July 18, 2008
Go back further then 1960 Trend

Utah has 25 Championships
BYU 21 Championships

Utah leads the series 54-28-4

Past 15 games Utah is 9-6

BYU did not dominate the WAC conference until after the 2 Arizona schools left to join the Pac-10
commando | 8:24 a.m. July 18, 2008
HA! I don't see any Cougar fans getting bent out of shape at B.J.'s bold statement that they should go undefeated unlike the yewtard faithful did when Curtis said the same thing a couple years ago. We all know why.
re: commando | 9:03 a.m. July 18, 2008
it was Robert Johnson that made that comment, not Brian Johnson like so many ignorant, uptight byu fans think, BJ wouldnt say something stupid like that, although he's gonna light up byUs weak secondary come november
Nice. I prefer ... | 9:14 a.m. July 18, 2008
BYU's classic look. But I don't mind the Yewts' new jerseys. Anyone seen UNLV's new uniforms? Now that's an awful uniform. (And I'm a UNLV grad.)
re: commando | 9:30 a.m. July 18, 2008
It was ROBERT Johnson (Jr. CB from Los Angeles) who stated the goal of going undefeated, not BRIAN Johnson (Sr. QB from Baytown, TX). The DesNews reported it wrong.

It's not unheard of for the Deseret News to not employ fact-checkers; neither is it unheard of for TDS fans to jump all over inaccurate information, then blow it out of proportion. It's one thing for a team to say their GOAL is to go undefeated (Utah). It is another issue for a team to say [THEY] SHOULD GO undefeated (TDS).

It's also extremely common for TDS faithful to refer to Utes as "yewtards" while simultaneously making a stupid uninformed comment. Glad I'm not a coug.

GO UTES!!!
posting and rugby | 9:59 a.m. July 18, 2008
Enough with getting upset at one another for posting on the other team's articles, especially now when there is generally only one or the other on a particular day.

Just a reminder, pre-'60s football didn't have the forward pass, so it wasn't at all like the football we know today. It was lining up on the line of scrimmage and all you can do is run the ball. It was more like an American style of rugby than what football is today.

By the time the end of August comes all of the same ol' same ol' trash talk is going to get old, so can we please go easy on the trash talk at least until the teams get out practicing in the fall.
re:9:30 AM | 10:15 a.m. July 18, 2008
And last year, when BYU won conference, yoots said it was the out of conference games that were important, not a conference championship, but this year it is their goal.

If BYU players predict undefeated yoots scream.

If yoots predict it, it's all good.

All yooterville fans care about is the BYU game, and for the past two years, they have come up lacking.

UNLV, AFA, BYU, tied for third in the MWC.

One guy (Phil Steele) thinks the Utes will do well, in all the other preseason polls, they don't even have Utah on the Radar.

Let's just hope BJ doesn't get injured again. Max Hall can play through it, but BJ is like a little fragile glass doll.

It will be fun watching BJ light up BYU's weak secondary, at least for the few possessions they get, because BYU will own the ball for most the games.

Just protect the sidelines on 4th and 18, and put a defender in the North Endzone this time. BYU doesn't need another "Fluke" win because Utah can't provide coverage.

Ohhhhh, the deafening Sound of Silence (yooterville fans know what I'm talking about. North Endzone, Harline???).

Quiet Yoots are fun.
Big 10 | 11:30 a.m. July 18, 2008
Utah fans, need to begin preps for the trip to the BIG HOUSE, and Michigan, just like the Y having to worry about NIU... don't worry about the silly rivalries until November....

Wittingham is following the same pattern of Crowton. There teams are terrible and they cant coach but they are hip and up to date on their uniforms.

Has now officially spent more time in the New Uniforms than he did all last season in the Old Uniforms.

R. Spencer Robinson | 11:57 a.m. July 18, 2008
Johnson did not prognosticate. He did not offer a forecast or prediction. He stated a goal, to go undefeated. It appears to be the same one BYU has called its quest for perfection.

(Note to journalists. Please be aware of the meaning of words before using them.)

I support both teams goals until their final regular season game. I hope they enter that game with perfect records. I hope BYU wins that game, and wins a BCS bowl.

I support ending the BCS hegemony. Utah did its part. Now it's time for BYU to do the same.
Can the whining stop now??? | 12:10 p.m. July 18, 2008
What yooterville fan was complaining that there were no stories to be written about the yoots?

Mad Props to uncovering this hard-hitting piece of journalism.

Next, I think there should be an article about the Yoot Coaching Staff's favorite cookie recipes.
