If you are going to take offense at some typical fan behavior of bashing other schools and conferences, then you probably shouldn't read the comments after sports articles. It's normal. It's so lame to read the posts about the "stop hating" and the "you are being arrogant" comments. Thats what many fans do--at least the ones that spend time posting on message boards. Go some where else to save the world, and let the smack talk continue. It's entertaining. If you don't like it, don't read it. If any of us fans take this stuff that seriously, then we have bigger issues to worry about in our own lives, but we don't need you fixing it for us.

It's SPIRIT, HONOR, INTEGRITY, TRADITION. Get it right Cougar boy.

BCS will come. Us coug fans aren't worried it will happen.

We finished the season #1 in the Nation before, been there, done that.

It's not like we were in the NCAA championship game and came out #2, then missed an invite to the NIT.

But we won't be satisfied with #6, we're shootin' for #1 there, "three years in a row dude".

We did it before, we can do it again. BYU has what is called a "program", not one hit wonders, then the coach bolts...

""Everytime I see someone predict a... perfect run through the Mountain West it confirms to me that they don't have a clue."

"BYU has a lot to prove before they are crowned champions of anything.""

It's your quote, own it there babe.

Undefeated in conference two years in a row, ranked 14th, and you decree we shouldn't "start to speculate about their BCS potential".

Well, it us and the national media you are trying to silence, so just deal with it.

Yooterville folks want a #6, and then flip back to team #3 tied mediocrity in MWC, that's their choice.

We ARE speculating about the National Championship AGAIN because IT'S THERE, and alot of it is because of Harline, 4th and 18, and Unga's 10 yard run through the goosedown Redzone Defense that give us two consecutive undefeated conference seasons. You had your chance to quiet us, and you were foud lacking.

If yooterville fans want to shut up BYU fans, my suggestions, #1.) don't embarass yourselves in league, then #2.) shut us up on the field.

We did it two years in a row, maybe you yoots could use a little self discipline with your insecurity.

Used to be a Cougar | 12:28 a.m. July 15, 2008
Growing up I was all about the Y. I proudly wore my "McMahon for Heisman" shirt. I cheered them on versus Michigan in 84. As I got older and played highschool and then college ball myself, I found it impossible to continue supporting the Y. The average Cougar fan is that unbearable to me. They do not know anything about college football and are delusional about their place in the National CFB world. I had an argument with my father about the average y fan. To back up my contention that Cougar fans were Cougar fans and not Football fans I polled 10 folks I knew to be Cougar fans last year. I asked them 5 questions any football fan should be able to answer.
1- NC winner last year
2- Heisman winner last year
3- Penn States coach
4- Where did M Faulk go to school
5- Where did P Manning go to school.

They got 18 of 50.
I went out of state at 18 to play ball and am not really a big fan of either team. I hope for Utah to do well each year not BYU. Only because of their fans.

I would rather have Brian Johnson on my team over Max Hall any day of the week.

RE: Oregon Ute
I agree with you that both Utah and BYU fans are civil for the most part. Throw that out for the rivalry game. I didn't grow up in Utah, but I think I understand the rivalry pretty well. One part of the rivalry that fascinates me is the Mormon vs. Mormon part of it. It's not just a "We don't like BYU cause they're Mormon" type thing. The L.D.S. members that are Utes don't like BYU either. Despite some uglingess it's a very fun rivalry. You get caught up so emotionally in the games that it's easy to say something stupid. Sportsmanship in this rivalry is very lacking from both sides. It gives one a great chance to try and practice self-control under trying circumstances. Go Cougs!! and good luck Utes in your other games.
A day that could live forever... | 8:28 a.m. July 15, 2008
November 22, 2008

BYU and Utah will both have excellent teams this year and the possibility exists for both to be 11-0 and ranked in the top 10 when they meet in November.

Regardless of their successes and/or failures during the 3-month buildup to the game, I'm looking forward to a very close, spirited game, as usual.

The biggest difference I've seen in the two programs since LaVell took the reins at BYU is the emphasis on winning championships. BYU's number one goal EVERY year is winning the conference championship. BYU fans and players see winning the championship as the key milestone in a successful season.

Utah seems to focus more on individual games -- beating an OOC opponent, avenging last season's loss to a conference opponent, beating BYU, and, thanks to the watered-down bowl system and not having to win the conference championship to play in a bowl, winning a bowl game. Moments of greatness surrounded by moments of mediocrity.
Hey Bama fan | 9:26 a.m. July 15, 2008
Well, the Utes USED to play basketball...but I forget when that actually was.
:reUsed to be Cougar | 9:55 a.m. July 15, 2008
Since you are now a Ute fan, ask them how to do research.

Good effort and all, and I don't want you to feel attacked, but I could pick 10 BYU fans out of the crowd at a game and get you 50/50, and pull 10 Utes and get 0/50.

Base your rivary on the team, and if neither is important to you, don't.

Just enjoy life.
George Homer | 10:22 a.m. July 15, 2008
BYU is the best!!!! We have dominated every game the last 2 years, yes, even the games that we lost!! We are going to win a National Championship for sure this year!!! Especially since we are ranked high in the pre-season. Forget the Utes!!! They are Horiible!!!
Re: Homer | 10:45 a.m. July 15, 2008
... Simpson. Bart stole your donut while you were busy blogging.

The Utes will, once again, be demonstrating their superior obscene-gesture-inducing game plan in Laramie this year. What will they do for an encore?
Aggie Fan | 11:26 a.m. July 15, 2008
You all have it wrong... BYU and Utah will do fine this season, but watch out for the boys up north, they are going to be the BCS busters, and beat USC in the Fiesta Bowl for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Utah State is the real deal, the new dominating football program in the state! LOL!!!
Morality and Obnoxiousness | 11:30 a.m. July 15, 2008
I was raised to be a BYU fan but ended up going to Utah due to a state-earned scholarship. I really enjoyed my time at the "U". During my time at Utah, I became a loyal Utah fan simply for the fact that I didn't like the way member of my own faith acted. My aunt doesn't attend church when her cougars lose. I grew up attending games at Cougar stadium. I heard the same language in Provo that I heard in Salt Lake.

I must admit that some of my Utah supporters tailgate with alcohol and can become a little obnoxious. They are good fans. Those tailgaters make up a very small percentage of fans. Maybe 5%. I would say nearly 80% of the fans attending Utah games are LDS families. As a percentage, I would say our obnoxious fans and BYU obnoxious fans are just as obnoxious. I have seen as many fights in Provo than I've seen in Salt Lake. The BYU fans that drink stay home rather than attending the games. I hear the same language from both sides.

Just because BYU is a religious based campus doesn't make them holier than anyone else.
To BSU Bronco Fan | 11:33 a.m. July 15, 2008
you beat oklahoma. neat. do you see a trend in oklahoma football? you know...kill conference opponents, get into the NC or BCS game and lose horribly to everyone and their grandma. yes, the Boise/OK game was entertaining, but oklahoma isnt that great in bowl games. another thing is yes, you whooped BYU's bums a few years back. note the coach was Gary Crowton. he wasnt good and BYU was in a down cycle at the time. way to go, you beat an old man when he was down. also, i find it funny that Boise wants to join the MWC so badly. i hope they do just to get us that much closer to a BCS conference
LOL | 12:36 p.m. July 15, 2008
Did you mean you hope BSU gets into the MWC to get you that much closer to another team that's played in the BCS? Oh, and you forgot to mention following your excuse for BYU's beatdown by BSU last time we played that we killed Utah on their field just last year too...shortly before you eeked by them when they went to sleep on 4th and 18. So BSU throttles the class of the MWC and you can't wait to get us in your conference. You guys do smoke some whacky tabacky down there in Zion, don't you?

LOL
Huh | 12:46 p.m. July 15, 2008
"Hey Partial....

It's BYU looking to follow big brother's footsteps to the BSC party. Fot Utah its been there, done that.

Until BYU accompishes their BSC goal they will always be a pesty and annoying "little brother"."

Um I don't know what the BSC is but if you meant the BCS you must look back at your history and remember that it was invented because of BYU so there would never have been an accomplishment for you to achieve if we hadn't been the reason it was created.

What is more significant the person who invented something like say a car or the first person to take it for a test drive?

Now move over most of America now knows who is in the driver's seat . . . BYU . . .
Reminder | 1:07 p.m. July 15, 2008
A little reminder to all Utah fans out there. Even if Harline and Collie weren't open (still) and even if you had pulled off the wins in those games you still would not have been conference champs. BYU still would have been the outright champion. It would not have been won or shared with U. This often will cause one team to play tight and the other team loose with nothing to lose (except the game) which often can make the teams seem closer in skill than they really are.
Dream on | 1:22 p.m. July 15, 2008
Again I say and not due to the ability of either or any non BCS schools. The system will never allow a NON BCS team a shot at the National Championship deal with it. Let it be Known cougar fans that your quest for perfection is legitimate however it will result in a BCS game at best but not the BCS GAME!!! Should be great season GO UTES!!!!!
Re: huh | 1:25 p.m. July 15, 2008
Silly Utah fan always lowering the bar.

BYU isn't looking to follow in little brother's tiny footsteps, BYU is aiming to repeat what they've already done, win another National Championship. For BYU, it's been there, done that, let's do it again.

To Utah fans, the pinacle of college football is a BCS invite.

To BYU fans, and everybody else in the college football universe, the pinacle of college football is a National Championship.
Exactly | 1:42 p.m. July 15, 2008
"Hey Coug...

Revel in 1984 all you want. It won't help you get to your current goal of a BCS bowl.

2004 was a great feeling, and I only have to remember four years ago not 24."

And 2004 will not get you another BCS bowl and never will get you a national championship.
Not limited | 2:22 p.m. July 15, 2008
Unlike Utah's one-hit wonder 2004 season, BYU has many great seasons they can revel in:

In addition to 1984, we have

1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2007

to mention just A FEW of the memorable BYU teams of the past 50 years.
Anonymous | 4:44 p.m. July 15, 2008
RE:Dream On

"The system will never allow a NON BCS team a shot at the National Championship."

That is the same line that we heard back in 1984.

Problem is, BYU has more tradition of Quarterbacks, productive offenses, defensives and NATIONAL RANKINGS than most Non-BCS and many BCS teams. That is why even with their great season in 200r, the Utes ended up #6, and in 1984 BYU ended up #1.

While many Ute posters just celebrated moving out of the basement, people who actuall vote for the National Champion know the tradition.

So keep saying "The system will never allow a non-BCS team" just like they did in 1984, and once again, if the season turns out, BYU will be ranked #1, and your yooterville fanbase can put another astrisk next to it, and BYU will have another Trophy, unlike the empty space in the Huntsman Center reserved or the "BCS Buster nonexistent Trophy".

The top two teams in the final BCS Standings will be placed in the National Championship Game ("NCG").

Trust me, if BYU is ranked #1 or 2, they will play in the NCG.

Utha can't make up that much room. BYU can.
Possible but unlikely | 5:16 p.m. July 15, 2008
Re: Re: Dream On

Its not that simple.. BYU does have a chance if they went undefeated to play in the national championship game, but it would take a great more than going undefeated. Remember, theres more than than the 2 polls which determine BCS rankings. Theres also the computer rankings which will penalize BYU heavily for their schedule. BYU needs to go undefeated, have Washington and UCLA have decent years and seriously hope there are not 2 undefeated BCS teams out there. Plus if one of the Super-programs like USC, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, just to name a few, has only 1 loss then there is no way BYU would get in. It can happen but it would take EVERYTHING falling into the right place.

But dont talk about it too much. BYU is a very good team but other MWC teams shouldnt be intimated. It wouldnt have taken much for BYU to go 8-5 last year and I doubt they have as good as a team this year. They will have a spectacular offense and an average D, maybe worse. They're very good but the cougars are a football team with some definite vulnerabilities.
True Blue | 8:15 p.m. July 15, 2008
I love the comments about anything, can happen. What happens if the Y overplay Unga and he goes down during the season? Max Hall gets hit to many times? Plus Utah will have a great team, and has home games, looks good for them. My only problem with Utah is their fans. Going to BYU and standing during the prayer and yelling, screaming and spouting off the f-word. What class.
Re:True Blue | 9:18 p.m. July 15, 2008
It works both ways. Having byu fans spew-out vulgarities and hurl food onto my investigator friend at a U game in your stadium was really classy!! Great examples of the church (whether you admit to it or not, byu athletics and the church are inseperable). They then hid themselves as the cowards they were!! Classic. I've seen it in non-conference games, home and away, too. byu fans are hardly good sports. It works both ways. Remember that.
Enter Name | 4:59 a.m. July 16, 2008
"Having byu fans spew-out vulgarities and hurl food onto my investigator friend at a U game in your stadium."

First of all: It never happened. I've been to the Utah-BYU games for the past 12 years, and all you Ute fans post about all the terrible things that have happened, it's BS, and trust me, if someone did it, it was a Ute.

Second: You come after the Cougars with a made up story, attempting to try to make them feel bad. hitting in the "missionary soft spot", hopeing they'll bite and give you an undeserved apology.

Lastly: If I had an investigator, the last place I would take them is a BYU-Utah game, because they would see all the anti-LDS hate spewed by the Ute fans. Plus, they would ask, "Are some of those foul-mouthed-louts in red LDS?" And you would have to answer yes.

I'm suprised you stopped at food being hurled, why not their beers too? Let's make it sound bad.

Really, if you ever do have an investigator, take them to Temple Square, or to church.
A.J. | 7:56 a.m. July 16, 2008
Thank You "Enter Name" for articulating exactly why Ute fans cant stand BYU fans all in one post. In your world, all BYU fans are righteous, faultless "saint" like individuals who you vouched have never wronged a Ute fan in Provo and you did it with great certainty. The next time your in LES and listening to a Ute fan "spew" as you called it any kind of hostility towards byu just keep in mind that its attitudes like yours that makes us angry.
Goodness! | 8:06 a.m. July 16, 2008
I got a kick out of reading all these posts. There is a lot of talk about classless BYU fans, yet the most disrespectful and downright idiotic posts are against the BYU fans. Then there's the one from the SEC fan. He apparently has sufficient interest in the MWC that he keeps track...maybe not. Both Utah and BYU have a pretty good number of wins against BCS teams. And what SEC team is he from? And for the BSU fan, I like your team. Reminds me of BYU during the early 80s. Lost your coach, huh? Well, good luck in the future. Nice win against OK. So...How does BSU look for this season?

The BYU-Utah rivaly is one of the oldest and best in college football. I love it! May it live forever!

From one arrogant fan to another - GO COUGARS!!!!
Grow up | 9:21 a.m. July 16, 2008
...children

"why Ute fans cant [sic] stand BYU fans... its [sic] attitudes like yours that makes [sic] us angry"

There is a small minority, but most Utah fans are not beer-guzzling, Mormon-hating, vulgarity-slinging BYU haters.

There is a small minority, but most BYU fans are not self-righteous, arrogant, holier-than-thou, look-down-their-noses-at-other-religions, vulgarity-slinging Utah haters.

It is possible to be civil to each other and still enjoy a healthy rivalry. The childish behavior on both sides gets very old after a while.

Childish behavior, by the way, isn't restricted to teens and 20-somethings. Some people grow old, but never grow up.
i am smart | 10:12 a.m. July 16, 2008
alright. i am a utah fan. i will admit utah has been the little brother for most of the years of this great rivalry. but who cares. i for one relish the chance to be the underdog. the win means so much more. but over the last twent years which the series is tied 10 - 10. i would say the teams are twins. we both just hate eachother.
Question? | 12:07 p.m. July 16, 2008
Post if your a Non-LDS, liberal, democrat passionate BYU fan. Does such a person exist?
Clean Sheet of Paper | 12:59 p.m. July 16, 2008
We need a nice, clean sheet of paper (new article) to discuss BYU/Utah football. This one's been scribbled on enough.
sad and funny | 1:02 p.m. July 16, 2008
It makes me laugh and also shake my head in wonder at the yoot fans/BYU haters who post their pathetic made up stories like "I used to be a BYU fan but then this happened..." or "BYU fans spew vulgarities and throw food at me and the investigators I brought to the game..." and the always doubtful "BYU fans are just as bad as yoot fans if not worse...". Give it up BYU haters! It's too obvious the "I used to be a BYU fan but..." posters are yoot trolls trying to stir up trouble, nothing more. And the other stories are mainly cases of yoot fans projecting their own bad behavior onto BYU fans. So in their own minds the legend of the bad BYU fans continues to grow.
MADRYBEG | 2:39 p.m. July 16, 2008
I am not trying to "one up" anyone on this post. There have been stupid comments and intelligent comments made on both sides. I especially have grown to appreciate a neutral side's opinion on BYU and Utah. Bama Fan, in particular is a fine example. I served my mission in Alabama back in 1995-1997 and Bama fan is right. Nobody there, or Missippi, or Georgia, Florida, Tennessee knows anything about Utah except for the Mormons, Jazz and BYU...in that order. I am a Utes fan and I am not 'dissin' the Utes. What Utah accomplished in 2004 was a great stroy. But, that is all it is now. BYU is more well known and respected than Utah as BYU has a football history. They have a winning tradition. Utah can and should be proud of the distinction of being THE ONLY team to break into the BCS before the BCS changed its rules to allow non-BCS schools into their bowls. However, one year does not make a program. Utah MUST win conference championships and beat bigger schools over a period of time. Times are changing and I am looking forward to the ride. GO UTES!!!

I could care less with you pathetic people on the hill have to say about your place in the college football universe. YOU MEAN NOTHING!! take it with a grain of salt and enjoy your girls gymnastics...look at conference championships between the two programs and you will clearly see that one truely is a "program" while the other resembles that texas state team from necessary roughness, great movie but pathetic team! You are so welcome. I ma glad I could help you with that one.

"The next time your in LES and listening to a Ute fan "spew" as you called it any kind of hostility towards byu just keep in mind that its attitudes like yours that makes us angry."

I will bear that in mind, while my 78 year old father, who has never sworn in his life, never tasted a beer, and myself, listen to the vulgarities "spew" from the mouths of red sweatshirted "fans" rocking unsteadily, that it is "my fault" you are all so angry.

I am the puppetmaster???

BYWho? | 8:59 p.m. July 16, 2008
From 1974 to 1992, BYU has claimed at least a share of 14 conference titles (77.8%), and went 16-2 against Utah (88.9%). Utah has claimed 0 (0%). From 1993 to the present, BYU has claimed at least a share of 7 conference titles (50%), and going 6-9 against Utah (40%) while Utah has claimed at least a share of 5 (35.7%), and winning 60% of their games against BYU.

These stats show that one team is trending downward, losing (or lost) their relevance of the '70s and '80s. The other has been steadily trending upwards and HAS RE-ESTABLISHED AN HISTORICAL DOMINANCE of the former. That same former team needs to thank the Almighty for a couple of miracle plays, and recognize that "luck" and "magic" are not sustainable virtues.

I just love how BYU fans whine, moan, complain, weep, wail, & nash their teeth about 2004.

Let me break it down for you fans of that 1 blue man group; I suppose that its okay to pretend its 1985 (Where is Bruce Sprinsteen when you need him?) but heaven forbid your rival is the 1st to set a precedence which your beloved institution has yet to & probably won't EVER do.

I don't see any Sooner fans complaining about the Fiesta Bowl. lol.

Truthfully, neither the U or Y could hang w/ the 2nd string from Florida, LSU, Georgia, etc...

Because he was right, it was a made up incident.

Zoobies are so squeaky clean it makes us all seem dirty.

I'm a Ute fan, been to all the games, we need to quit making it up and call it what it is. It's weird there, it's Stepford, it's cafeine free cola, and popcorn songs.

I dont care that you and your dad have never used a curse word or that youve never tasted a beer...Or for that matter, you think that anybody who would choose drink a beer is a "unsteady" alcoholic. Get out more man. But once again, you have perfectly articulated the BYU attitude.
Trends | 7:37 a.m. July 17, 2008
To: BYWho?

Nice selective use of trends to come to an erroneous conclusion.

You conveniently ignored the changing of the guard in 2005 when Bronco Mendenhall and Kyle Whittingham took over the BYU and Utah football programs. Changing the head football coach is probably the single most important factor in determining the long-term trend of a football team.

Therefore, the ONLY trend that is really relevant is the CURRENT trend with the CURRENT head coaches.

Record since 2005
BYU (Mendenhall)
2005 6-6, 5-3 (MWC) 2nd tie
2006 11-2, 8-0 (MWC) 1st, AP #16, Coaches #15, BCS #20
2007 11-2, 8-0 (MWC) 1st, AP #14, Coaches #14, BCS #17
2-1 vs Utah
Overall 28-10 (74%), MWC 21-3 (88%)
2 Conference Championships
2 Top 25 Finishes

Record since 2005
Utah (Whittingham)
2005 7-5, 4-4 (MWC) 4th tie
2006 8-5, 5-3 (MWC) 3rd tie
2007 9-4, 5-3 (MWC) 3rd tie
1-2 vs BYU
Overall 24-14 (63%), MWC 14-10 (58%)
0 Conference Championships
0 Top 25 Finishes

Dominance has indeed been re-established. The dominance that BYU has enjoyed over Utah since LaVell became BYU's head coach in 1972.
