Brad Rock: Cougs, Utes destined for showdown

Didn't the Deseret News run a nice article on BJ and the Utes, including kyle's quote that the Utes goal is to "Win a conference championship"?

Didn't the Deseret News run an article about the Phil Steele rankings, leaving out the embarassingly inconvienent fact that the Utes aren't even mentioned anywhere else in any of the other preseason rankings?

There are the little "homer articles" you need to feel relevant.

Another example of Ute Fans selective amnesia?

Once again, the past two years, the University of Utah has been neasured, and come up lacking. Now run along and defend your third place tie, and...

Quit whining.
Greg | 10:25 a.m. July 14, 2008
Lots of useless smack... I can't stand the Cougs (living right...yeah sure), but, I want them to do well this year, next year, etc for the conference & the state. 13-0 Utes, 12-1 Cougs would be my dream. This could be the year it happens - at the very least, it'll be fun to watch!!

Go Utes!!

"2004 was a great feeling".

All of the country with their eyes focused on #6 vs #19.

Can you then imagine 1984 with the eyes of the country focused on the #1 team in the nation, QB Robbie Boscoe limping around on a gimpy leg that would have sidelined any Ute player leading his team to victory.

Sort of like Max Hall leading his team to victory last year with a seperated shoulder, sort of like he one that sidelined your quarterback.

What's diferent is that is not the only great season BYU has had. BYU paved the way for Utah, BSU, and Hawaii by cracking the rankings when no one in the country thought any team from the WAC, or now the MWC deserved to be in the top 20.

We opened the door for you guys.

We accept your apology.

Now, stop us from a third MWC if you can, and make yourself more relevant than just wanting to beat BYU. Urban had a vision of what the Ute could be.
Talk to your coaches.

Bronco seems to e the only one in the State with higher goals.

Quit hating the player.
News | 10:36 a.m. July 14, 2008
Maybe if you finish better than tied for third in the conference someone, some where will right about you. The only news coming out of utah football the last year is crying about injury this and injury that. Make some news that dosen't involve getting punked by UNLV and then losing at LEN to Air Force.

To BSU fan a miracle bowl using every trick in the book does not make up for a 1 and 3 bowl record vs Louisville, BC at home and on the smurt turf to mighty ECU. The only team in the west that has a harder time than BYU winning on the road vs a BCS team is BSU 0-10 vs the Pac 10.
DieHardCougar | 10:47 a.m. July 14, 2008
RE: The NIT and everyone else.
Why does BYU have to crash the BCS before we can talk smack? Why does a #14 ranking and winning the MWC not give us any right to talk big about our team? I'll admit, BYU hasn't been good enough to crash the BCS, but it doesn't mean they aren't good.
Go Cougs!
Amazing Trivia | 11:10 a.m. July 14, 2008
For the last 4 decades, the champion of the WAC or MWC has earned an automatic bid to a bowl designated for the WAC/MWC champion -- Fiesta, Holiday, Liberty, or Las Vegas.

How many times have BYU and Utah played in the bowl reserved for the conference champion?
November | 11:09 a.m. July 14, 2008
I can't wait for November when BYU and Utah meet! I hope they both go into that game undefeated because that would make a great game to watch!!

I love college football!
J-Rod | 11:19 a.m. July 14, 2008
I am 100% a BYU fan. I am also a Mtn. West fan so I want any good Mtn. West team to win all their games (especially against BCS teams) except when they play BYU. I would LOVE to see both BYU and Utah be undefeated coming into their matchup this fall. Either way, may the best team win. You know it will be a great game.
All teams have arrogant jerky fans. It's not fair to single any team out. Isn't this the age of being politicaly correct, stop generalizing.
Re: Lifetime Top 25 Finishes | 11:40 a.m. July 14, 2008
BYU was 21-6 vs Utah from 1965 to 1991.
Hillarious | 11:49 a.m. July 14, 2008
This cracks me up. I am a huge Utah fan however both sides are counting chickens way before they hatch. BYU and UTAH both have to many opportunities to loose this year before the showdown not to mention ? going into the season. I feel both teams will be good if and only if they can stay healthy. As for all of you who bash Whitt, Last year he finished with a great record considering all the injuries. The only down fall is his loyalty. If he remains loyal to Ludwig and Ludwig doesn't perform it will be his Down fall. Go Utes!!!!
re:Die hard from The Utes | 11:57 a.m. July 14, 2008
Picture Richard Gere in "An Officer and a Gentleman".
Picture Chris Farley in "Wayne's World 2".

"Because I have nowhere else to go...

I have nowhere else to go..."

Or Chris Farley on SNL:" Remember, back in 2004, and Urban was there, and we were ranked #6, and we won, and we were all happy???

That was cool..."

That is why nothing counted before or after a #6 team played in the Fiesta Bowl against the almighty #19 Pitt, and after that great accomplishment, Urban left.

Please feel the least bit sorry for us. We sure do feel sorry for ourselves.

And instead of you guys just rolling over and losing, you keep beating us on those lucky plays, and then you remind us that you live right off the field too.

How are we supposed to have any self-esteem?

There is only so nuch joy a red Sweathirt and a buzz can give us.

That is why it's all about the BCS.

It's the only thing we have ever done, (well, that and UNLV last year, and Joe Glenn (who has two first names, anyway?)...

ute fan | 12:03 p.m. July 14, 2008
ok coUgs guess what your not going to win a nat'l title or even go to the bcs cause your schedule is weak if you played a top 25 team on the road before confrence then you may have a chance.

utah will be even better than byu this year cant wait
Reality | 12:04 p.m. July 14, 2008
Life has pounded in my head to be prepared for disappointment. Call me a cynic, but I would be surprised if either one of the teams made through the season unscathed. Could it happen, yes. But odds are it won't. It's like thinking you're going to win big in Vegas. Could happen. It does happen for some. But odds are it's not going to. So enjoy the ride for what it is.
Thanks for NOTHING | 12:19 p.m. July 14, 2008
The Univ. of Utah owes NOTHING to the TDS for our BCS Busting season. Why? Because they EARNED it on their own merits. The '96 Cougars won a lot of games, thanks to their cupcake* schedule, and barely beat #14 Kansas St. (their only quality win of the year) in their bowl game.

*As an unbiased college football fan, I'll allow that BYU did play Texas A&M, who though they stunk that year -- at 6-6, including a loss to UL-Lafayette -- at least the Aggies were a quality team when the game was scheduled several yrs prior.

The 2001 TDS rose as high as #8 in the BCS standings before being destroyed at Hawai'i, and against L'ville, demonstrating that they were NOT BCS mat'l.

As far as I can see, the Utes never needed the cougars for anything.
See ya in November | 12:27 p.m. July 14, 2008
Can't wait! Should be a great season. Should be a great rivalry game. Utah will be good. BYU will be good. At this point nothing has been proven on the field, unless you go back a season or two. EDGE: BYU.

As for Steele's predictions: Hope both BYU and Utah do go undefeated until the rivalry game, but I doubt that. Still, if that is the case then one of those teams are going to a BCS bowl, so why did he pick one in the Vegas bowl and one in the Poinsettia? Kind of takes away credence from predicting Utah as the better of the two teams.

I'll stick with my forecast: BYU takes the MWC again this year but with a perfect record out of conference as well as in, including a BCS bowl win. They position themselves to make a National title run the next year. Utah likely loses the Michigan game, but they get pumped up for the big games, so maybe not. Sadly, it is more likely Utah drops a game against a weak conference team in their typical midseason lull.
Pocatello Cougar | 12:48 p.m. July 14, 2008
I noticed that a Bronco State poster (referencing us as the "Yewts" and "Kewgars")determined that because the Broncos beat both BYU and Utah easily a few years ago, they are the superior program.

First, that's typical Boise State arrogance. We're used to that here in Pocatello.

Secondly, if a single game has that much meaning, then the Idaho State University Bengals (probably the worst football program in the country)are better than Boise State because we beat them in 1992 on a trick play called "The Globe of Death."

By the way, Kyle Whittingham was a coach on Brian McNeely's squad back then -- we became good friends, but I haven't talked to him since he moved on to Utah. Friendship goes only so far :)

As a member of Cougarnation since 1978, I love BYU and (respectfully) hate the Utes. That said, the University of Utah is a great school that produces men and women who make a difference in our country.

Boise State is a Utah wannabe. Perhaps, in 30 or 40 years ......
Just another spectator | 1:09 p.m. July 14, 2008
Thanks for NOTHING,

I'd agree Utah doesn't owe BYU, but BYU opened the nation's eyes in the biggest way, 1984, and more than once, which certainly didn't hurt Utah's case.

I was glad Utah did something in 2004 to represent the MWC. So I won't take anything away from that. But BYU's 14 top 25 finishes, 4 of which were top ten, is far more remarkable.

The 1996 Cougars got it done, except a close loss in their first game of the season. They may not have buried teams, but for the most part they knew how to win--kind of like the 2006 and 2007 BYU teams.

As for 2001--that's simple--where was Luke Staley the Doak Walker award winner that year in the two losses of that year. Oh yeah, injured, or else that would have been a BCS year.

BYU is just consistently good. Nationally, Utah is more like a one hit wonder. It all has a lot to do with the goals and aspirations set. Utah wants respect in the state of Utah and BYU wants national respect. No wonder they clash, because BYU beating Utah doesn't accomplish the goals for either team.

All you trash talkers here are sucking the fun out of the rivalry, and turning into something ugly.

Go Utes!
Cougar fans | 3:16 p.m. July 14, 2008
You guys become increasinly unbelievable in your smug misguided arrogance. You guys think your going to the National championship game and haven't played a down yet. pardon me if I wait until you do your annual meltdown against some 5th place BCS conference school
Comments in California | 3:28 p.m. July 14, 2008
While I was driving to Redondo Beach this week, a local sports show mentioned that Utah or BYU would crack the BCS this year and that both would be a good fit if their league (Pac 10) ever expanded. The commentator also mentioned that it would never happen because the four California schools won't share the pie. He mentioned that Stanford, USC, UCLA and California(in that order) control everything that happens within the Pac 10. The other 6 schools are important but have very little control within their league. They believed that Utah and BYU would be in the top four teams in football and Utah would be a top four team in hoops each year. They loved the fact that Utah had some outstanding womans sports and that BYU had such a large following and great men's volleyball team. Talk is fun but talk is cheap.
Re: Not a Cougar Fan | 3:16 | 3:45 p.m. July 14, 2008
The only annual meltdown is from the team up north which always seems to find a way of losing to a MWC bottom-dweller.

Utah will probably beat Michigan and Oregon State this year.

And will probably drop a game at Wyoming and/or New Mexico.
dumb | 4:01 p.m. July 14, 2008
utah will be nowhere. By week 5 Ute fans will be calling for Whits head just like all the past years
Common Coug's | 4:04 p.m. July 14, 2008
I don't know about BYU fans being arrogant, disrespectful, or hateful, but I agree that a lot of them are delusional right now.

Everytime I see someone predict a BCS game, a perfect run through the Mountain West, or a national title, it confirms to me that they don't have a clue.

BYU has a lot to prove before they are crowned champions of anything.

I was in Desneyland last week and could have sworn I heard the UTe fight song....it went something like this.....M-i-c-k-e-y M-o-u-s-e mickey mouse donald duck, mickey mouse donald duck! Trust me it works. Cracked me up
prediction | 4:11 p.m. July 14, 2008
Here's a prediction for all you ute fans. Come Nobember 22, BYU will be 11-0 and ranked #9. Utah will be 9-2, and will be hovering around the fringes of the top 25, following an embarrassing loss to Wyoming (in which Wyoming elected NOT to kick an onside kick when they were up by 17 points late in the 4th quarter). BYU will win easily, will go to the fiesta bowl, where they will meet Texas, and beat the Longhorns for the 3rd straight time, will finish the season ranked #4, and will open the 2009 season ranked #8, and poised for a national championship run. Utah in the offseason will fire Ludwig, and coach Whittingham will take over as offensive coordinator, resurrecting the famous Ron McBride 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offense, and the Utes won't win more than 8 games in one season for the next 10 years. Take that one to the bank!
Mills Levan | 4:24 p.m. July 14, 2008
Dumb, you have chosen an apt user name. I follow and enjoy both programs, and Utah will contend for the conference title (perhaps against BYU) this year.

re:Thanks for NOTHING | 4:44 p.m. July 14, 2008
"Because they EARNED it on their own merits."

You got there on merit??? (sorry, Spit-take) LOL.

Without BYU breaking the hold on the national polls by the "power leagues" your merit and $4.50 would have got you a Double Expresso at Starbucks and not much more.

Dude, even today.

Why do you think the Mtn was picked up by DirecTV???

All of the phone calls from fans of UNLV, U of U, or Wyoming flooding in from all over the country?

Why does Utah sell out one game every other year, and the rest they give tickets away and the stadium is half full?

2004 would have been a trip to Vegas without BYU pulling you along.

I double-Dog-Dare Chris Hill to cut his apron strings to BYU, and Utah would have to move all their games to East High to make it look like they drew a crowd.

BYU did all the heavy lifting for the WAC and MWC for so long. Nobody wanted to give respect to the smaller conferences, and BYU made them, while all you in Yooterville were happy wallowing in mediocrity.

It's not arrogance, it's just the way it is.

I accept your apology.
re:Utefan 12:03 | 4:54 p.m. July 14, 2008
"utah will be even better than byu this year cant wait"

Can't punctuate either.

Same old preseason talk before the midseason fold.

Why can't you poor Utes set some meaningful goals.

BYU wants to go to a BCS Bowl. BYU wants to win "another" National Championship (and you say you can't have that be a goal... it's arrogance).

Utah wants to be "even better than byu". (Well, I say you can't have that goal... it's unrealistic).

re:Common Coug's | 5:10 p.m. July 14, 2008
"Everytime I see someone predict a... perfect run through the Mountain West it confirms to me that they don't have a clue."

"BYU has a lot to prove before they are crowned champions of anything."

Soooo, you want BYU to go undefeated in Conference three years in a row before they are crowned champions of anything.

Tradionally they Crown Conference Champions after one year.

Three years. That's tough to do.

BYU was only ranked #1 in the nation once, and Utah was only ranked #6 once, but I guess it can be done, if that is what you require...

Ute fans that think they will be better than BYU this year are dreaming. Thier is no doubt in my mind they will finish second though. Utes don't get me wrong will be tough, but BYU is much deeper talent wise than Utah. Plus we have the better QB, The numbers proved that last year. Dream on Utes it ain't happening!!

There is no shame in that.
Don't get it.... | 7:15 p.m. July 14, 2008
Why, why, why, are we not a BSC team like Utah, BSU, and Hawaii?

With all that B.Y.U has going for it;

The 1984 National championship,
numerous WAC/MWC championships,
65,000 fans every week,
national fan following,
the respect of the national media,
the adoration of the local media,
two game win streak over our rivals,
numerous top 25 rankings,
inspired coaching,
players living right on and off the field,
tradition,
and Magic.

Why aren't we a BCS team? I just don't get it.

What can we better do to get ourselves into a BCS bowl? What are we not doing right?
RE: Oregon Ute | 7:25 p.m. July 14, 2008
I too have had similar experiences at LE stadium and I have seen no class Mormon BYU fans behave equally bad as Utah's guests. However, it is interesting to attend a game at either stadium when the host team is not playing the other. The fans at both schools are pretty descent in general. I have to wonder why Utah and BYU fans dislike one another so much. Where did it begin and how far is it going to go? It doesn't say much for our upbringing, religious conviction, etc. does it. Thoughts??
Straight Talk Cougar | 7:27 p.m. July 14, 2008
Fact: BYU has gone undefeated in conference play 2 years in a row
Fact: Utah has finished 5-3 in conference play 2 years in a row.
Fact: BYU beat UCLA in the last game of the year, and will beat them again this year.
Fact: BYU has beaten Utah twice in the past 2 years, that's 100% for all you statisticians.
Fact: BYU is ranked #13 by ESPN for their pre-season football poll.
Fact: BYU's Max Hall has a higher passer rating than Utah's Brian Johnson.
Fact: Brian Johnson has never beaten BYU.
Fact: BYU will beat Utah this year in football, and I will be attending the game!
re: re:Common Coug's | 7:41 p.m. July 14, 2008
"Soooo, you want BYU to go undefeated in Conference three years in a row before they are crowned champions of anything."

No; I want BYU to win some games in 08, before they are crowned the 08 conference champions. I want them to beat Washington and UCLA before we start to speculate about their BCS potential; and I don't want to hear anyone mention "BYU" and "National championship" in the same sentence unless it is refering to 1984, or "Things that will never happen without major changes to the structure of college football."
Re: Oregon Ute | 7:43 p.m. July 14, 2008
Oregon Ute: if you try to attach the church to BYU football, you are always going to come up guessing. The annual BYU/Utah football game is when all the trash talking, all the hatred, and all the competition gets to an all-time high, and so don't look for religion to be an example at this time. However, I attended last year, you didn't hear any bad language from me, or any of the people who attended with me, and there was no drinking done by us either. So, there are still standards, but my attitude changes, yes. If you want to have quiet dignity and watch football, stay at home and watch the game from your couch! Go Cougars!
RE: Straight Talk Cougar | 7:49 p.m. July 14, 2008
Two years isn't much history to support an analysis and it certainly is does not a turn a future event into a "fact." I would sure hate to own your stock portfolio. I'll bet you are proud of that BYU diploma though.
Re Re: Oregon Ute | 8:13 p.m. July 14, 2008
Nice. Look closely, I said nothing about the church (which I presume you mean the LDS church)and I find your reference to word "hatred" interesting. Further, I do not know what you mean by the word "guessing." Whether you are drinking or swearing or not, the fact is that I have observed Mormon BYU fans engage in such behavior at Utah football games. Further, I would suggest that you yourself, though perhaps not drinking, are in a state of mind where you can "hate."

I know of no religion where hatred is taught as a tenant. Shame on you for creating such an excuse.
