I myself look forward to both Utah and BYU cracking the top 12 and going for the BCS. If they consistenly do this year in and year out this will be a great MWC. Other teams will follow and that is when the recognition comes. To me the only time I care who is better is at the rivarly game other than that I cheer for both teams. I hope that BYU goes 13-0 and UTAH goes 12-1 cosistenly so they both can be in a BCS game. now that would be great wouldn't it or the other way around. I am a BYU fan so that is what I hope for but want to see both teams in the top 15.

Too bad a National Championship is way better than a bowl win but hey its all the utes have im fine with them holding on to it
No BSA for TDS | 3:25 p.m. July 13, 2008
No way they win in Utah this year after two give-away games the last 2 years. Even if Utah is a 8 win team they will beat the TDS.

none of this matters.

RE: BYU has no class.

It is clear that you hate BYU - pretty classy right? It doesn't matter what we say or do, you will hate us.

You are the epitome of hypocrisy because you are acting exactly as you accuse BYU fans of acting - and now you have me acting just like you do. One bad deed deserves another, right?

Honestly speaking, if I had my way I would do away with all BYU sports. The bad will generated within the church (as LDS-haters egg us on) is pathetic.

Im my opinion, both sides are in need of a heavy dose of repentance.

Once again, the only time the yewtes get any notice is when the main point of any article is about BYU. Without BYU, the yewtes are a non-starter in any intelligent conversation about college football. Poor yewtes are as relevant to discussions on quality college football teams as say Utah State, Southern Utah University, or Weber State. The yewtes and these other schools simply don't matter. GOOOOOO COUG!!!!!!
re: To BSU Bronco Fan | 5:08 p.m. July 13, 2008
You don't hear anything about BS University because this is a UTAH newspaper, not an I-da-HO one.

Its clear you don't know what the word "Hate" means.
It'll be fun | 5:20 p.m. July 13, 2008
...beating the classless yoots at their place - oops sorry, I meant our Northern stadium a.k.a. LES North - again this year. Maybe we'll even do an on-side kick after we're up by 4 td's just to see how they like it. I'm sure the Wyoming fans will give them a warm welcome in Laramie this season, too. Have fuuuuunn u-tards!

And GO COUGARS!!!

Onside kick up 43.
Schumann | 3:09 p.m. July 13, 20 | 6:13 p.m. July 13, 2008
Hey Schumann - Does that 24 year old national championship helps you feel better about never getting to a BCS bowl?

I hope so, because it must hurt to realize that even with all the influence that 24 year old national championship brings, its not enough to get BYU to a BCS bowl.

But hold your head high. Even though BCS bowl spots are reserved for only the very best teams, there are a lot of teams in the second tier that are good teams, just not BCS quality. There is no shame in that.

Someday the magic of that 24 year old national championship may return to lift BYU to a spot in the BCS. Until then keep the faith, little brother, keep the faith.

Re: BYU has no class | 6:11 p.m. July 13, 2008
Last time I went to a game in RE stadium, my family and I were subjected to filthy language and beer being poured on me. I saw and heard how much "class" Utah fans have. I took my family there to enjoy the BYU-Utah rivalry but instead, we had to leave with my wife in tears and me angry. We will never go back! Having attened games in LE stadium as well, I now know who has no class! Utah needs to clean up their act! Some of you have turned RE stadium into a blue collared, X rated exhibition of rudeness. So much for class!
Hey DesNews... | 6:33 p.m. July 13, 2008
I challenge you to print one article exclusively positive about the Utes, without reference to, or comparison to BYU.

Try it. The Cougars will come out in droves with internet hits challenging the positive coverage of the Utes.

Think about it, you would get the Cougars challenging your positive reference to the Utes. Add that to the Utes challenging your always glowing coverage of the Cougars and your internet hits would double overnight.

It's journalism at its finest, absolute journalistic gold.
To: BSU Bronco Fan (ad nauseum) | 6:43 p.m. July 13, 2008
Afraid that like our friendly Yewt fans, who continually accuse us of living in the past (1984), we will be hearing about the wonderful "once in a lifetime" Bronco miracle win against Oklahoma for the next century or two-just as we listen to our Yewt brethren babble about their once-in-a-lifetime Urban myth of 2004.

Like both BYU and Utah, you are going to have to do it again before we start taking your seriously.

And let your mind wander back to that miserable fall afternoon on the smurf turf when one of Gary Crowton's worst teams came within a missed chip shot FG (by one of BYU all-time best placekickers) from knocking off one of your better teams of the past half decade.

While you have a sweet little run of tradition over the past few years, BYU has played with the big boys and won (and lost) for more than three decades.

Boise State fans, this is an argument that you can not win-until you have proven yourselves for far longer than your short run thus far.

But, keep it up-it's all good for the entire western football scene, as well as some good rivalries.

Go Utes!

With that, am I suddenly the most over-the-top fan out there? Oh please. Also, since when do I have to live in AZ, WA, CA, or TX to be credentialed in fanhood. I get to cheer for my team and say whatever I want simply because I'm a fan.

but Go Cougs over Utes!
Oregon Ute | 7:00 p.m. July 13, 2008
smack, smack, smack. That's all we ever here. I would like to read some biased but congenial rhetoric. I had to write in after taking as much as I could about Utah or UW fans being abusive, as if BYU fans aren't. I was sitting in the north end zone at cougar stadium when Errol Tucker was a UTE. I was cheering for the UTES when a 30 something mother holding her infant child starting swearing at my friend and I and told us to leave. Not long after that a true blue cougar, in his late 60's early 70's continued the diatribe the mother had begun. Having grown up in Utah, and served a mission, I was shocked at the vulgarity. To make things worse, as the UTES ran into the locker room at halftime the BYU fans showered them in spit. I was truly dissappointed and saddened that church members would do stuff like that. Remember people, it's just sports.
Re:Michael | 7:03 p.m. July 13, 2008
"1984 "national title" is a total joke. barely beeting a 6-6 team in a decent bowl is not a natiaonal title game. The even bigger joke is that it lead to the BCS."

Give it up.

It's real.

The trophy is real.

re:BYU has no class.

Watch the Ute fans. Classless, uneducated and drunk beats classless anytime.

BCS Buster, now that is made up.

BSU fans:

Calm down. No matter what you do, you're still in Idaho. All anyone knows is you have potatoes, Smurf Turf and Napolean Dynamite. I loved your BCS Bowl Game, but it's not happening again. Hawaii smoke you last year, and got smoked in their Bowl. The WAC won't be sneaking up on anyone soon.

Re:Good afternoon and Michael.

Get a #1 ranking, then...

Oh, wait, sorry, It will never happen.

Work on UNLV...
Then Air Force... Fix last year.

Hey Ute Fans, just don't leave us hanging again. Make the game at RES meaningfull so our players don't just play well enough to beat your sorry team. We need a blowout.

Virginia Ute | 7:18 p.m. July 13, 2008
Overall record 53-33-4. The edge going to the the Utes

Record over the last 15 years 9-6. Again, with the advantage going to the Utes.

But you and Uncle Rico will always have 1984 to look back on with fondness. Your ignorance is always inspiring.
BYU FAN from California | 7:56 p.m. July 13, 2008
utah doesnt stand a chance against this years BCS BUSTER
Re:Virginia Ute | 8:25 p.m. July 13, 2008
BYU 2 Utah 0

That's the most recent record. You can't bring up 1984 to make a point and then use 53-33-4 and the past 15 years record. You are the one that needs to get with Uncle Rico. Luckily for you, Ute tradition only goes back to 2004 so it won't be hard for you to look back with fondness.
reality check | 8:37 p.m. July 13, 2008
Sorry U-fans, the BCS ute team was a great team, however it never beat a top 20 team, (Pitt was 21 or 23), and no team it beat was top 20 at the end of the year. Compare the number of NFL players that came from that team and BYU's 84'season when the NFL wasn't watered down with the expansion teams and and utah doesn't have much to bragg about. Sorry I just go by facts.
Re: Virginia Ute | 8:35 p.m. July 13, 2008
And how many of those games in the early 20th century did you see???

I have followed BYU since 1972, and although I have not added up the score, it is easily a 2 to 1 advantange in favor of BYU over Yewtah. And if I want to revel in the 1984 championship I will, BECAUSE I WAS THERE!

Yewtah has one good year and you begin slobbering all over yourself. Don't forget, BYU is THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH as far as the sports world is concerned.

Your ignorance is always inspiring.
Virginia Ute living in the past | 8:41 p.m. July 13, 2008
Like most of your fellow fans, you like to throw out past statistics like 55-33-4. Let's take a look at the modern age (since 1950) when BYU really first took up football seriously. Since 1950 BYU leads the series 31-27. Since LaVell arrived in 1973 (36 games ago) BYU has dominated the rivalry 25-11.

Still a great rivalry and still hoping that both squads show up at RES on a snowy November 22nd undefeated, both ranked in the Top Ten, with a BCS bowl on the line for the winning Cougars.
Go Yewts! | 8:42 p.m. July 13, 2008
Okay, let's keep score as to which team's fans are more vulgar. Any guesses who wins, hands down?

Hint--(how many times have you heard "F you U of U" in Provo vs. "F you BYU" in Salt Lake City)?

Now which fans are more vulgar?
Gracias Dios | 9:02 p.m. July 13, 2008
Truer words were never spoken!

Too many Utes/Cougars/Broncos et al living on past glory.

Way too much smack for something that really does not matter.

BTW, gracias por sending us Bronco...

My predicsion by the the time the Utes and Cougars play it will be for the MWC title and thats all they will both have loses and the Aggies will be better than we think!

How Rude | 9:13 p.m. July 13, 2008
That is so stinking rude to place the Aggies at 117 or 118 out of 119 teams...

They are easily as high as 110!
Bubble Boy | 9:16 p.m. July 13, 2008
Seems that the state of Utah is stuck in a bubble... If you'd like to see some real college football turn on the TV to any nationally televised game on a Saturday afternoon. Those are the games that count.

Unfortunately for you, neither of your teams will be there! Go ahead, I dare either of you to go undefeated... It won't matter. You might be thrown a leftover bone, then again, you might not.
To: Go Yewts | 9:22 p.m. July 13, 2008
Excellent question friend.

Of the past 23 years that I have attended every game at both RES and LES, Utah fans have an overwhelming 12-0 lead in this ugly category.

In fact I have never heard the "F u chant" from a BYU crowd in football or basketball. Oh sure, there are the isolated fans that may be crude, but never the entire crowd like in Salt Lake. And even then, not the whole crowd as there are many fine decent Utah fans-but as a whole rude/crude.

Sadly only at RES by Utah fans.

Sorry about your inferiority complex Ute fans-but there are only some things that you are far superior at.

Classlessness tops the list. BYU fans may be arrogant, but Utah fans are classless and envious.
Jim jensson | 9:32 p.m. July 13, 2008
I thought they teach a class at Utah on how to be vulgar at football games. They must, because so many do it!
Re: Schumann | 9:49 p.m. July 13, 2008
Yes that 24 year old national championship makes us feel better because it is something that BYU has that the the U of U will never have. Oh and we obviously are keeping the faith.
BCS BUSTER!!!!!
Max Hansen | 9:54 p.m. July 13, 2008
I was given the middle finger and sexual insults shouted at my wife and directed toward my religion in RE stadium, but I never saw or heard any vulgarity in Provo. I doubt anyone spit on Ute players either, sorry I don't believe it. The worst I have ever seen or heard in LE was some boos. I won't go back to RE either. The rest of you can have it!
RE hey des news | 10:37 p.m. July 13, 2008
sorry news is what is happening now and guess what its byu so just escept if every newspaper did positive articles about all the non conference champions saying there so good that just isn't how it works

here's the truth publicity comes when your good take the hint i bet you had more articles in 2004 but its 2008-2009 now

re: BSU fan, back when your mother was wiping your nose, BYU and UTAH were fighting it out with D-1 teams. Don't bring up your one shot to glory (we were impressed) and bag on BYU and UTAH. Utah was the first to bust the BCS, BYU has won a National Title and beaten a number 1 ranked team. To top it all off, how many heisman trophies do you guys have or Outland trophies do you have or even Doak Walker awards? But if you want to live with the present we are fine with that too, just don't forget your lustrious wi.. i mean loss to East Carolina who? oh Pirates. It's a what have you done lately college football world... and BSU what have you done lately? From the Big Brother Mountain West with love. GO COUGARS!!!!!
THE University of Utah??? | 10:51 p.m. July 13, 2008
I love it how Cougar fans claim to be THE University of Utah.

Sorry Cougs there is only one University of Utah and it ain't you.

It is however typical of "little brother" syndrome, simultaneously dispising the big brother while wanting desperately to be like him.

I've certainly NEVER heard any Utah fan claiming that Utah is THE Brigham Young University.

Like all little brothers you Cougs have gotten in a couple of sucker punches recently, but you always have been, are, and always will be our annoying "little brother".
Re: Go Yewts! | 8:42 p.m. | 10:57 p.m. July 13, 2008
I've heard language from the blue-clan patrons of LES that would make a sailor blush.

I seems that the brothers and sisters at LES are granted a game-day pass on vulgarity.
Re: Virginia Ute | 8:35 p.m. Jul | 11:27 p.m. July 13, 2008

Hey Coug...

Revel in 1984 all you want. It won't help you get to your current goal of a BCS bowl.

2004 was a great feeling, and I only have to remember four years ago not 24.

Ron in OC | 12:30 a.m. July 14, 2008
I attended BYU but graduated from Utah. I follow both teams as best I can, but I need your help. I've forgotten which team / fans I'm supposed to hate.
The lights are starting to come | 12:34 a.m. July 14, 2008
All accross the mountain west, from new mexico to idaho. good for Boise State and Utah, about time.

BYU had been the only football becon in the rockies for decades. The better you guys play, the more coverage the region gains. In the end, we all win.

Let's hope Air Force and Colorado State get back on their feet to go along with TCU.
Re: BYU Pride | 1:32 a.m. July 14, 2008
The pressure is on Utah? BYU's theme this year is 'striving for perfection' or something like that. They are setting themselves up for failure. I know Bronco wants to aim high but he's also giving his opposition more to get fired up about. As for Utah being mediocre, don't they still lead the overall series? As far as I'm concerned both teams have been pretty much equal since the mid 90's (about the time other college programs caught on to recruited the Polys from the Islands). . . each team having a few really good years as well as some pretty poor years. Overall, they've been pretty even.

Rob | 2:09 a.m. July 14, 2008
The idiocy from both fan-bases is astounding.
reTHE University of Utah??? | 2:18 a.m. July 14, 2008
You are so right, the post should nave been more clear and stated "The only University in Utah with a football program,"

Silly Cougars.

I lived in So Cal for 21 years before moving back two years ago. I tried to follow BYU and Utah. The only team mentioned on national sports shows (except 2004) was BYU.

I bought the ESPN package before they sold out to the Mtn and would be able to watch BYU almost every week but they would only show 2-3 Utah games, including the rivalry game.

I feel bad reading these posts because it appears Utah Fans really think they have a national relavance.

Luckily they watered down the Bowl games, so I can watch the mighty emerald nuts bowl and poinsetia bowls.

I've been back in Utah two years, and only able to watch CSTV and VS. Once again, they show BYU 2-1 over the Utes.

I would have loved to see the UNLV game, because I think it would have been interesting to seejust how you go about getting shutout at UNLV???
BSU? | 2:40 a.m. July 14, 2008
Wow, you have to be lame if you live in Idaho and have to read about the Cougs and Yewts. BSU losers, you were really good one year(like the Yewts). Where have you been since? Talk to us when you've actually been doing this for a while. The BYU, BSU games are gonna start up soon enough, so get that crow ready to eat.
Corner on the Market | 7:43 a.m. July 14, 2008
NO... The cougars don't have the corner on the market..... THEY HAVE THE MARKET. Until the Utah fan base has the power of the cougar fan base the Cougs will have the Market.
Zoobie 56 | 8:20 a.m. July 14, 2008
Preseason polls are fun, but all we have to do to understand this isn't a science is to look at last years polls. Most predicted the Utes to be top 20. It didn't happen. Most predicted the Cougs to be in the top 40 or 50. Didn't happen. (they were better) It will be fun to see how things turn out this year. I sincerely hope both the Utes and Cougs have outstanding seasons. That would be the best for both schools and the conference. For those saying how rude and obnoxious BYU fans are I have one comeback. Try wearing blue at a BYU-Utah game at RES (Salt Lake) and see how you are treated. Please spare me the horror stories at LES. I know we Cougar fans can improve. Go Cougs!!!

LAS VEGAS (AP) -Frank Summers rushed for 190 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead UNLV to a 27-0 upset victory over Utah as the Rebels stopped an 11-game losing streak to the Utes.

Summers, who had 29 carries and 108 yards in the first half, caught his only pass of the game for a 29-yard touchdown with 14:51 left in the first half, giving UNLV (2-2, 1-0 Mountain West) a 10-0 lead.

It was the first time Utah was shut out since a 38-0 loss to Arizona State in 1993. It was UNLVs first shutout since 2000 against North Texas. That score was also 38-0.

See, I can't understand why Samford and his coaches were laughing.

Oh, that's right, I was at the game and it was sooooooo very funny to watch.

We-Own Utah.

To Oregon Ute et. al. | 10:07 a.m. July 14, 2008
Over many years of attending games at LES, I have never seen anything remotely like what you are describing (Of course, I know that those things have happened, but it is NOT the rule). Whenever a Ute fan in full uniform has sat near me (wherever in the stadium I have been sitting), it has brought about conversation and good natured ribbing (BOTH sides smiling), never anything more. I am sorry for your bad experiences, but I am witness to many good experiences that Ute fans have had in LES (Including my own stepson). Rivalries, on both sides should be about fun, not hatred, then we would all enjoy it even more. The more both teams win, the more national attention we will get, so......

go utes.

GO COUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
