Partial billing | 12:14 a.m. July 13, 2008
Hey, lookie here. An article about the University of Utah, kind of.

A partial billing with big brother is better than nothing Utah, so no more complaining.

Re: Partial billing | 12:22 a.m. July 13, 2008
Yeah right, in the last week or so there have been 5 stories/columns exclusively about byU football and ZERO about Utah football. I think this makes 3 that include both byU and Utah.

The D-News is so biased toward covering byU it is PATHETIC.

I don't even expect the same amount of coverage, just half or even a quarter of the coverage would be nice.

THE COUGS ARE GOING TO BE AWESOME THIS YEAR! I REALLY BELIEVE WE HAVE A SHOT AT THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Hey Partial....

It's BYU looking to follow big brother's footsteps to the BSC party. Fot Utah its been there, done that.

Until BYU accompishes their BSC goal they will always be a pesty and annoying "little brother".

The NIT | 12:54 a.m. July 13, 2008
Here we go again with the stupid smack talking from BYU fans. This benign article [like others from last week] starts to bring out the unbelievable arrogance from BYU faithful. As a recent transplant to Utah from Arizona [Pac 10 territory] and Missouri [Big 12 country], I could probably be fairly objective about BYU's football program. However, the typical BYU fan is so arrogant and so obnoxious, it is difficult to like their team at all and remain independent. Their arrogance and trash-talking - before their team has done anything- makes USC, Oklahoma and Texas fans look like they are just the most fair minded folks around. After BYU goes undefeated and wins a BCS game, then maybe their fans can start all the big talk - not before the accomplishment.
Cougarfan | 12:55 a.m. July 13, 2008
I really don't care what either side says about this game, all i know is that it'll be good. Neither team sucks. They are both really good. I'm stoked. But Go Cougars!
AzBYUfan | 1:33 a.m. July 13, 2008
I am looking forward to the small trip to see BYU play in the Fiesta Bowl.
Go Cougs and go Utes as well!
A fb fan | 1:51 a.m. July 13, 2008
I'm new in Utah and from the east coast. I really just recently started following the Utah/BYU rivalry. The Ute fans seem like they are a hypersensitive bunch, especially now that the media is hyping BYU. BYU fans are to be commended for not rubbing it in even more since being on top of Utah college sports. The Utes are definitely the little brother here, not hard to see from an unbiased position.

May the best team win.

Hey NIT ,,, wit | 2:35 a.m. July 13, 2008
Why don't you keep your opinion to yourself until either of the arizona schools or missouri goes undefeated or wins a BCS bow. Maybe then we'll take what you have to say seriously.
Bradiohead | 3:14 a.m. July 13, 2008
Hey if byu goes 11-2 2 years in a row that gives byu fans bragging rights. Now if BYU goes undefeated this year I hope you realize you will hear a lot of pride coming from byu fans. And Byu is is no way the little brother of utah, BYU was the last non bcs team to win a national title, so byu is big brother to utah, sorry ute fans.
Tongancougar | 3:46 a.m. July 13, 2008
Since we have mUTES talking about the past and following footsteps then maybe its them that want to follow the cougs in winning a NATIONAL TITLE(Something they didn't accomplish in going undefeated and winning a BS I mean BCS Bowl). Lets not live in the past but in the present where results have been nothing but BLUE.
To NIT | 3:54 a.m. July 13, 2008
As a transplant from So Cal (Pac 10 territory, like that gives me any credence) I can tell you that BYU is going to be very good this year. So will Utah.

And having lived all over the place...

No BYU fans are not any more arrogant than any other fans.

That is what being a FAN is all about.

Cheer for your team.

Go cougars. Bust the BCS!
Coug in Mass | 4:03 a.m. July 13, 2008
Ah yes. Let's trash the Yewts. After all, it is July, and the teams are already firmly in the control of the ....strength coaches.

While Harline and Collie are in fact still open, the Yewts could just as easily have covered both and we would all be singing a different tune.

Northern Illinois is a dangerous game. UCLA will be unhappy about losing the bowl game by a fingertip. They have to go to Washington. Both teams get the infamous PAC-10 officials. I can't believe that TCU doesn't have some players. The rest of the conference will be gunning for the two-year conference champs.

Guys can get hurt. Field goals can be missed. Coverages can be blown (ask the Yewts). And then there's, well, just Tulsa days. But it's July. 12-0 is possible. Heck, we can hope for 11-1 for the Yewts. I do believe that BYU has a better program and slightly better players. But we might all be sitting around in December pointing out that Cummard is back, and asking if the winning streak in the Marriott Center can be extended.
Bama Fan | 4:05 a.m. July 13, 2008
I'm not a fan of either school actually, but for a Utah fan to call BYU its little brother seems a little ridiculous...don't ya think??

BYU has 10x the tradition that Utah has; where I come from, no one even knows anything about the state except for the Jazz, BYU, and Mormons.
Freeze it there | 5:16 a.m. July 13, 2008
Let's just live in the year of the Urban Myth, or National Championship.

Or let's not.

Nothing magical happened for the Utes before, or since.

Since pre-season ranking and Bowl appearances apparently don't matter to either side, let's just look at the end of season rankings. I know one team finished one year 4th and 5th , and another #1 and #2.

The Utes argue that Conference doesn't matter, only road wins agains BCS teams, of course then their UCLA game was not in the Rose Bowl with PAC 10 officials. Most glaring road loss for Utah, UNLV, and we all know that scoring zero against UNLV is sort of pathetic.

BYU lost at the Rose Bowl in a winnable game, and ran the MWC undefeated for the second year. They beat on overmatched, highly motivated UCLA squad with a blocked field goal, so many Utes don't count the W. However, I have seen more blockd field goals in football, than fumbles inside the 10 at the end of the first half, so I would say UCLA was the luckier team in their loss.

All the early season talk means nothing.

But, Byu looks better than Utah This Year.

Way-way-WAY-better.
Also lived in PAC,BIG12 | 5:16 a.m. July 13, 2008
Combined, I lived in Washington state and Arizona for 25 years. So far, I have lived in Texas for 2. I'm surrounded by Longhorns, Aggies, Sooners(A&M), and Cowboys(OSU) and they are pretty intense about their teams.

So Mr. Nit, let me tell you things from my perspective. Maybe I am one of those arrogant BYU fans you and your ilk talk about. I think we have a pretty good team. I think that with the offense that we have returning and with some luck with the defense we can have a very, very good year. With a good showing I am hoping BCS, why does that make me arrogant?

My father when 70 years old went with my brother-in-law to Husky Stadium in Seattle to watch BYU play. At that point he had paid taxes to Washington state for 45 years, raised several law-abiding children , one of whom attended UW. He isn't a football fanatic, but sat in the middle of a bunch of mean-spirited, epithet-shouting Husky fans. He made the mistake of audibly cheering for BYU when they scored. The abuse that rained down on an old man was scary. Yeah, PAC-10, class act.
Cool | 5:21 a.m. July 13, 2008
The NIT - I think we are long lost brothers. You couldn't be more right.
re: the nit | 5:40 a.m. July 13, 2008
Thank you for demonstrating an arrogant and obnoxious post.

If Utah posted 11-2 records, two outright MWC titles, and their entire offense was returning, what would your talk be like? Has Utah been close to a MWC championship since Whit took over? NO, yet the smack from the pill is also BCS, talk about arrogance. Typical delusion U fan.

NIT-not-invited | 5:54 a.m. July 13, 2008
Here we go.

The Ute fans are going to rant and rave about a good seaon one year, go out and underpreform, blame someone, and be a wannabe also-ran-third-in-MWC defenders again, if they even do that well.

The Des News published a nice article on BJ recently, so we can quit that whine. And didn't they say in that article that Coach Kyle's goal was to win MWC.

The last two years, they have been measured, and found to be lacking.

Before all you Ute Fans jump on anyone, stop with the excuses and jump on your coaching staff to bring home the conference title. If the conference is so weak, you should not have left it on the table the past two years.

It's easy to do. Just beat everyone,

Until then, my "Little, Jolley. Utah Utah Men- Sir", how about a little quiet time.

And, My NIT-Pack-10-country transplant, your post reeks of arrogance. I really doubt that a person of your arrogance cares about objectivity. If that means you dislike BYU, there are 64,000 ready to take your seat at LES. I tink you would be better off with the humility and seat availibility shown at RES.

Just Curious | 6:00 a.m. July 13, 2008
How many of you Ute fans buy season tickets so you can have a guaranteed good seat to watch a quality team like BYU play at least once every other year?

If BYU left the conference, and did not play Utah, how bad do you think the sale of Ute Season Tickets would go down? Plus, would you lose the mtn on DirecTV?

Craig (afraid to show his face to present the trophy) Thompson and Dr. Chris Hill, you are welcome.

Let the BYU Bashing begin.

Long way to go | 6:10 a.m. July 13, 2008
The Nit: Stupid Cougar Smack talk is no worse that the crap you are spewing.
There is a LONG way to go before this game - either one of these teams could easily lose a game before playing each other in November.
How about BYU playing UCLA in the Poinsettia bowl. Wow, that would be awesome...
end of argument | 8:11 a.m. July 13, 2008
Okay here are the facts as I see them.

The Utes last 2 recruiting classes have been wonderful, some of their best ever. Utah will have a chance for a wonderful team and a team that IS as talented as their 2004 everywhere but quarterback. The 2 questions for the Utes is if Brian Johnsen really is a star quarterback and can their coaching staff kick it into high gear BEFORE 3 september losses. If that happens, this has a chance to be Utah's best team ever.

BYU has a loaded Offense in every way. Its a top 5 offense in the country. Their Defense has a really good front, LB's that are not nearly as good as they have been and the secondary that is pretty average....maybe worse. The key to BYU is does their defense really need to be more than scrappy? If I was a byu fan, id be talking BCS and national championship too.

So.....it might be the rivalry dream season and both sides have great cause for optomism. I cant wait for football.

Where's the Love. | 8:14 a.m. July 13, 2008
It hurts me to see so many faithful righteous BYU people talk smack on here and criticize and judge other people. I'm not even from Utah but my son plays for BYU and I read these articles. Please have some class and live the way Bronco teaches.
Richard Noel | 9:01 a.m. July 13, 2008
Utah has a great chance of being a real good team this year. Brian Johnson has been practicing his accuracy on one of those targets that are made from a tire and rope hanging from a tree in his backyard.

Also, the Ute receivers have been playing catch all year long with each other.
true blue | 9:07 a.m. July 13, 2008
I guess the utah brass can't handle the fact that their football team is insignificant. Beat Michigan in the big house and then they'll write an article about you. Win a conference championship occasionally and maybe then you'll be relavent. That would mean that you would have to focus more on conference games than your out of conference games. Don't worry I'm sure you'll beat UNLV and Air Force this year
Joe W. | 9:04 a.m. July 13, 2008
Only fools generate "hatred" for an opposing football team - so if you've posted accordingly here, be warned as t what you are.

re: end of argument | 9:20 a.m. July 13, 2008
Okay here are the facts as I see them.

The Ute's last 2 recruiting classes have been wonderful, but their coaching staff will find a way to blow it and still lose enough to finish 3rd in the MWC (the tradition continues!).

BYu will go undefeated in the MWC once again as well as undefeated OOC and will go to a BCS bowl.

So.....it might be a rivalry dream season for utHA but BYu will steamroll them at LES North this year. I can't wait for BYu football!
BYU no different | 9:43 a.m. July 13, 2008
lets face facts as much as BYU wants to project themselves as the beacon on the hill a special place unlike any other college in America. By the posts on here it is obvious they are just like any other group. Obnoxious, prideful, arrogant, even hateful.
So for the religious school to the south welcome to the club. You are nothing special.
The NIT | 9:48 a.m. July 13, 2008
Response to someone - I never said anything about UA or ASU or even Missouri, I was talking about USC [aka national champions] and Texas and Oklahoma. Read the comment next time. BYU fans can brag AFTER they've won a BCS game - not before. I do like the most recent comment from "where's the love" - finally a little class and positive comments about their team and not negative comments about another team. Oh, and to the Washington experience - I could spend some time telling you about a Utah friend's young son that was spit on and cursed at at a UTAH / BYU basketball game - now that's classy fan behavior. I think you get the message...
Re; Faith precedes miracles | 9:52 a.m. July 13, 2008
I'm with you on the faith thing but explain to me just how BYU is going to win a NC when they don't play anybody. So I need to have faith BYU beats who?.
Be a Missionary Now | 11:53 a.m. July 13, 2008
Just downloaded the July Friend for my primary class next week.

Let's see here:

A Gospel-Sharing Home

Pray for missionary opportunities

Invite your friends to Church activities

Be a good example

Share the gospel with others

Be friendly

Be an obnoxious jerk on an anonymous message board.

Woops! No, that last one's not there.

You cannot have it both ways, Cougar fans. Take a page from Where's the Love's book. Just because you might believe some Ute fans are jerks does not excuse you to be one too.

I urge the same advice on my fellow Utah fans.
Hey "Bama fan"! | 11:58 a.m. July 13, 2008
You say that all you have ever heard about coming from Utah is the Jazz, BYU and Mormons. You know, the Yewts play basketball.
WiseGuys. | 12:03 p.m. July 13, 2008
I think that most of these cougar commentators have been practicing there humor at the local comedy club, well since there isn't much going on down there. So keep drinking your kool aid and eating your carrot jellos and dreaming of what you'll never have. The whole reason we have the BSC series so that losers like the cougars can't play six and six teams to win bogus national champions. And since 1984 was about 24 years ago. Why can't you show confidence and not arrogance. Because if I remember right didn't byU go undefeated one year until the last few games the BCS past you up. Why because nobody wanted you. Now in 04 the UTES busted the BCS something your little cougars from cougartown roarroaorar will never do. So go ahead and talk. Reality speaks louder than words. So go beat a .500 team in the Vegas bowl. A team that wouldn't have even been there had you beat them the first time, enjoy walking in the U's shadow.
BYU Pride | 12:07 p.m. July 13, 2008
Every program has good and bad years.

Broco has done an incredible job restoring fan pride to a program that has good and great seasons more often than not over the past forty plus years.

I would assert for the many great years and the few bad years BYU has had, Utah has many bad years and a few good years.

Both teams seem to be hitting a good year this year, which has not happened that often, because Utah's tradion of mediocrity.

This season is a compliment to both staffs, and if Utah can hold up thier end of the season it could be a classic.

I would say that the pressure in on Utah to perform this season.

As far as the arrogance of both teams, I see BYU's fans just having pride in a program that has shown more heart over the past two seasons, and Utah's arrogance comes from the frustration of losing.

Growing up in Utah, and living on So Cal the past twenty years, Utah calling BYU little brothers is, well, stupid.

Urban got you mentioned on ESPN one year, other than that, no one except SLC sees you as a football anything.
IMHO | 12:27 p.m. July 13, 2008
In my humble opinion as a true blue BYU fan, I hope both the Cougars and the Utes are undefeated for the big game. Unfortunately though, the outcome won't solve the problem of idiotic bashers in this annonomous forum because one side will say "I told you so" and the other will say "Ya but what about the past?" Stupid is as stupid does...
Good afternoon, Wiseguys | 12:28 p.m. July 13, 2008
"Now in 04 the UTES busted the BCS"

Thanks, I wans't sure that happened, but since it appears in every Ute post, I guess it did.

Congratulations on "ONE" good season over the past 50 years.

For some of us oldtimers, we thought we would never see it.

Since then, it's evident that all you had in you was one good year.

So keep thost posts coming. Your due in 2054.

BSU Bronco fan | 12:33 p.m. July 13, 2008
All you Yewts and Kewgers can sit back and watch Boise State win another fiesta bowl this year. When was the last time either of your two teams beat us. HA HA HA HA. We smoked BYU by 38 AT BYU, and Utah by 33 AT UTAH. Oh yeah, we beat USU by 50 at USU last year.
GO UTAH | 12:35 p.m. July 13, 2008
THE DESERET NEWS SHOW US NO RESPECT. IT DOESNT MATTER, WE WILL DOMINAT AGAIN LIKE WE ALWAY DO IN MCW AND AGAINS YOU POR KITTIES!!!

LOL. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

COAH WITTINGHAM EVEN HATE HIS ALMA MATTER. HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU ALL FELL?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!

YOUR GOING DOWN AGAIN THIS YER!!!
Good afternoon, | 12:48 p.m. July 13, 2008
So going by your old timer logic and by what you're talking about. ours might be 2054 but yours will be... uh... wait... you've never been there. Well see you never. Good night pal.
Hey BYU Pride | 1:23 p.m. July 13, 2008
What are you talking about? Both teams have had many good years and a few bad years. Looking back 20 years since 1988, Utah has finished in the top ten twice, while BYU has only done it once, while BYU has finished in the top 25 8 times total compared to Utah's 3.

BYU has more conference championships, Utah has more bowl wins (a current 7 bowl win streak that includes the Fiesta Bowl).

And the "Holy War" wins for both teams is a dead even 10 wins since 1988.

So I would say other teams have been fairly even over the past 20 years. And even a historical look will show that there are long rooted traditions at both schools. I like numbers because they don't lie.

Both teams are great and once again the two dominant MWC teams will be battling it out to try and uneven the score.

And while I'll be rooting for my Utes in November, my friend will be using a season ticket that I gave to him to root for his Cougars. One of us will leave with a win, both of us will leave with a friend. Now that's a rivalry!!

Calm Down | 1:30 p.m. July 13, 2008
I am a believer in Phil Steele's magazine. But there are so many variables in a football seeason. If Hall gets hurt against Northern Iowa throw everything out the window.

Just look at what happened to the utes last season. They lost Asiata and Johnson before or during the first game and next thing you know they have 2 losses early in the season. Of course they recovered nicely and still had a good season.

Also BYU has been talking smack for two seasons. There are 8 other MWC teams gunning for them. I think people are sick of watching the cougs come in and to the haka. People hate BYU enough in there down years but coming off to undefeated conference seasons look out.

And then there is Utah doing onside kicks with a 50 point lead. That was brilliant I'm sure WYO will remember that and be waiting for that game. Of course most MWC teams are hapless and can't fight back but it may be an interesting season. And should be an exciting footbal
l season.
TexMex | 1:40 p.m. July 13, 2008
As a former coach, I never talked about winning championships before the season. I talked about practicing correctly and playing correctly. Then we will see... we usually won more than we lost.
Phil Steele's magazine | 1:42 p.m. July 13, 2008
MAD's magazine. BYU 0 and 3 to start the season. Lets see who's right.
To BSU Bronco Fan | 1:44 p.m. July 13, 2008
I'm with ya buddy! I'm sitting here in Boise reading these posts and getting a good laugh. BYU this and Utah that. 1984 and 2004. Big brother-little brother, etc. etc. etc.

Beat a 6-6 team in 1984, beat a pathetic Pitt in 2004. OOOOOOHHHHHHH, scary! Hey, you two little brothers...stop arguing or I'll make you watch a replay of THE REAL GAME...Fiesta Bowl 2007 against A REAL POWERHOUSE...Oklahoma. I can still see the looks on the Sooner fan's faces...like somebody had just run over their cat and driven off!

Nary a mention from both the Utes and the Cougars in here about getting shellacked...on YOUR OWN FIELDs...by a team that's been division I for what, 10 years now?

Keep it up though, your displays of mutual ignorance are very entertaining!
To Calm Down at 1:30pm | 1:51 p.m. July 13, 2008
Here's something both Ute and Cougar posters can agree on:

Hey "Calm Down" at 1:30pm - I trust you'll be enrolling in spelling and grammar classes as part of your Community College experience this year!

The real questions is:

What satallite/cable package or channel do I have to buy to see these games?
om in South Carolina | 2:09 p.m. July 13, 2008
Wow, you would think by reading about these prognosticators and all these arm chair QB's that BYU has a shot at the BCS, much less the BCS National Championship. Pretty funny guys! Downright hilarious!! First, you're not from the SEC, and second, you're not Ohio State. The SEC was down last year and still had the best conference. We also found that the Big Ten was Ohio State and the 10 dwarfs. BYU has to leave the friendly confines of the MWC and join a BCS conference to even begin to think about the BCS NC. After hearing what Utah's offense went through last year (an awful lot of injuries to key starters early in the season), and that BYU has to replenish a defense that was rather questionable (secondary with a lot of holes, etc.), I don't think that BYU will go undefeated. Soory guys, but I think that they will be lucky to escape this season with 3 to 4 losses. Anything more than that will be gravy. Mark my words, this year you will see a lot more holding penalties by BYU's offensive line just to keep Max Hall from getting his bell rung.
BYU has no class! | 2:13 p.m. July 13, 2008
A post on here said that bronco teaches BYU players to have class. Byu fans never have had class. LaVell was about as respected and classy as you could be. I never have liked BYU but I respected Lavell.

But, even during his long tenure BYU fans have always been hate-filled jerks. It is embarrassing being LDS and watching the boorish behavior of Coug fans.

I'm around many people that aren't LDS and they always bring up the behavior of BYU fans and can't understand why they are so hateful to other people. And like it or not the BYU fans hateful behavior which they take such great pride in is some people's only exposure to LDS people.

I think Bronco seems like a good coach and good guy but he can't control BYU fans. The only way to end it is to pull the plug on BYU athletics and unfortunately that day will never come. So keep acting like hate-filled jerks BYU fans.

And shame on the Deseret News for promoting and supplying a forum for all these idiots to spread there hate all day long. What does this accomplish anyway.
Michael | 2:25 p.m. July 13, 2008
1984 "national title" is a total joke. barely beeting a 6-6 team in a decent bowl is not a natiaonal title game. The even bigger joke is that it lead to the BCS.
To: BYU has no class | 2:27 p.m. July 13, 2008
Aren't you missing sacrament meeting up at the Institute right now???

And besides I'd lay my money on a bet that says most of the fans that show up and act like jerks at RES are of your faith too. BYU doesn't have the corner on that market by any stretch of the imagination!
