Considering USU's academic standards and the amount of scholarly production
from Logan, the best thing coming out of Cache Valley is still its cheese. The U
of U has more than $200 mil in merit based grants and BYU is number 7 among the
nations universities in peer reviewed publications per research dollar. Utah
needs a cow college and we certainly have one.

Excuse me??? Point of View's take of BYU being "exclusive" is a
new one on me.
Amazes me how people will go to the ends of the earth to find something (anything) to hate about BYU.
Don't forget that YOU make the choice to be affiliated with the church. BYU is part of that packaged deal, like it or not.
And by the way, I worked several jobs to pay my education at BYU - hardly "exclusive".

Too bad your little not doesn't do any good, because there is no delination
to allocate tithing funds. It is a generalized category. And if you are a
member why are you so against a church run and sposored school - that makes zero
sense.

Classy comments. Granted it was out of line for the "poor byu
students" commentor to say what he said. But making fun of people for
needing state subsidies because they are poor? Does this mean you laugh as you
fill out your fast offerings check because it is helping people less fortunate?
I didn't attend the U, but I did receive government grants to cover the cost of my shcooling (the rest I paid for by myself). Why? Because my dad couldn't afford to put me through school. All he does for a job is save lives as an EMT and put out fires out the mountain so your daddy's mansion doesn't burn to the ground. But you probably laugh at him too.

Although he has been bailed out by good hires (Urban, The tubby man in a
sweater). However, as a formere season ticket holder, his creation of the
Crimson club and other booster type organizations drove many of the fans out
that is why you see as many empty seats as you do. I would not be supprised if
he came up with the Idea for the MTN!

You didn't realize that BYU was exclusive? Here's a primer: (1) You
must apply; (2) Many are denied; (3) If you are accepted, your tuition is next
to nothing because you are church subsidized; (4) If you are not accepted, you
go pay at least 2 x as much for an education elsewhere while continuing to pay
tithing.
I realize that not everyone could be accepted to BYU. That is fine. But unlike temple attendance, church worship, summer youth camps, boy scouts, etc., BYU is exclusive.
Once again, this is just a point of view. Hopefully it will help you understand why some people don't love BYU. If you don't agree, you don't have to berate the point of view.

Admission to BYU, like most universities, is based on a number of factors taken
as a whole such as GPA, ACT test score, extra-curricular activites,
ecclesiastical endorsement, written essay.
It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, black or white, LDS or non-LDS, if you make the grade, and you are willing to abide by the Honor Code, you'll be admitted.
The bar for GPA/ACT scores varies from year to year depending on the number and mix of students applying.

Choose whatever word you want to, the point is that some people believe that the
money spent by the church to support BYU should go toward giving LDS members
that wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity, a chance to get an
affordable, quality education. Isn't this the goal of the university and
what makes it different? The "selection" process seems to be geared
toward more of the traditional approach (grades, test scores, etc.). There
isn't necessarily anything wrong with that, but some people would like to
see the school move in a different direction. I would like to see more
international students for example who are still deserving in many of the
traditional aspects, but who don't have some of the opportunities available
to those of us in Utah or near by. BYU does this in small ways, but look at the
make up of your class mates. It is just a difference of opinion.
As for tithing and athletics. I believe that tithing is being spent in the best way possible (not on athletics). I think that football and basketball pay for themselves as well as most of the other athletics at the school.

BYU is "selective" in the same way that a country club or any other
limited-membership organization is "selective." It has it's
criteria, and those who don't measure up are not admitted. Including many
worthy LDS members who would like a subsidized and quality education.
You are absolutely correct it is like other universities: it cannot admit everyone.
Point remains: it is church funded but is not based on need (like welfare) or worthiness (like missions); it is based on merit. Hence the reason many LDS people are not BYU supporters.

BYU hides because they have stuff to hide. I can't stand the Y but am
always amazed they still get the support of the church which is a great
organization. BYU is full of over paid teachers, faculty and staff. Students at
the Y are not representative of the majority of 20 somethings in the church (BYU
students are arrogant and self righteous fools). Go Montana State:)

Why would the D News write such a pointless article about everyone's
salary? BYU obviously doesn't pay Holmoe much because Holmoe is called of
God not by BYU, isn't that how we as church members should view this?

No one is claiming you have to love BYU because it is owned, operated, and
governed by the LDS Church. Same for Deseret Industries or any other
church-owned institution. However, all these organizations ARE tied at the hip
to the LDS Church - because the LDS Church OWNS THEM. You ridicule one and by
association you are ridiculing the other.
How you choose to deal with BYU, Deseret Industries, etc. is an issue for you to decide. It is called free agency.

Any amount listed under "Tithing" on your "Tithing and Other
Offerings" gets pooled into the "General Tithing" fund. Of that
fund, a portion of it goes to BYU. Other portions are allocated to: Ward
missionaries, General missionaries, Book of Mormon production and cost-defraying
thru distribution, Humanitarian aid, Temple construction, and the Perpetual
education fund.
If you want to pay your tithing, and don't want to fund BYU, allocate your 10% yourself. Fill out every block UNDER tithing, and let those smug, self-righteous, church-welfare-accepting-neocon BYU students pay for their OWN tuition and athletic programs.
Most BYU students aren't from Utah. With all their deductions, and low Utah County wages (for those students not on the mom-and-pop scholarship, who actually work), their tax liability is practically zero, so it's not like they've really supporting our program anyway.

The Church should do to BYU what it did for BYU-Idaho. That is, completely get
out of the athletics business and focus on the core purpose of the institution
---- EDUCATION. Everyone would be the better for it. Think of it: No
embarassment for the church when "marginal scholars" but gifted
athletes violate the Honor Code; more emphasis on education rather than the arms
war which is college athletics; and fans of rival schools would not have to put
up with the hautiness of BYU fans ever again.

Scott Barnes may join his predecessor as the most over paid employee on the
state payroll. With the Aggies miserable home football attendance 117 or 119 in
their NCAA division, averaging around 10,000 per game, adding in the 4 wins in 4
years, to think Spetman hit the home run and got the job at Florida State is
amazing. If Barnes can't turn the football program around, he joins a dozen
airline CEO's on the "anyone can do this job and likely do
better" list.

Cow college huh? Being a student at USU, I obviously have more experience with it than you. Ive never really heard much about the agricultural college. The thing is, its there and lots of people are in it. However, its a sad thing that thats all you think it is. Utah State gets more funding in space research that any other college/university in the US of A. Top notch engineering program to say the least. So good that BYU is one of its top financial donors. Not even the U can compare (sorry U fans. Just take comfort that ill pick you over byu any day in anything). Education program is also first class. Just a cow college? Hardly.

UVU can't afford a football team. They can barely afford to be a University as they are going to find out over the next few years.
I attended BYU and graduated, and I'm from Utah... Didn't have any problem getting in. Church members tithing helped subsidize my tuition, and for that I am grateful.

I actually liked both schools. They both have beautiful campuses. They both have good people.
They both have top notch athletic programs - for the budget that they have - and for being "mid-major" schools.
Athletic directors are way overpaid... Unfortunately, that is because we as a society have put way too much emphasis on sports. People are struggling to get by in the state, but at least the people who are in charge of our passion are being well-fed, clothed, and housed.
I for one, am a little bit sorry to see some of my tithing money and my tax money go to support such a "golden-calf."

Although Holmoe's salary is not disclosed, the DMN lists them in an
apparent ranking order--and Holmoe is number 2? In any case, it is obscene that
men make this much money to contract out the building of athletic facilities and
to make a few phone calls to other high-salaried public relations mongers in
order to schedule games. They all get more credit (and money) than they deserve.
By the way, I'm sure Holmoe pays 10 percent back to the church, as well as
his taxes to help pay Hill.

of importance. If you noticed, they are listed in order of salary. Who knows
what Holmoe makes, but I'm sure his is competitive with Hill's. If it
isn't, then Y. is getting a real bang for its buck. Thank you, Chris Hill,

I'm always confused on how members of the church can be so against a school
that is ran by the church. Don't you have a testimony of the church and
it's mission on this earth. And yet you decide to affiliate yourselves
those who do not like the church, not all of course, but a big majority. Stop
being so bitter because your child could not get in to BYU. Don't be bitter
because you feel inferior to other members. It's all in your head.
