Utah was considered only because they were good. BYU will be considered for the same reason. Its all in how you play the game. But remember, UTAH is a great state and in SLC its still a 4 letter word.

Luck!
It was lucky Kyle chose not to come to BYU and Branco did.
It was lucky Max Hall transfered to BYU.
It was lucky Harvy Unga chose the cougs over the Utes
Utah will be very lucky to come back from Wyoming unscathed. They will have their season broke in that game, I can see the headline now Utes season shaken up at Brokeback Mountain. Making plays are not just luck.
We fans are lucky football season is just 7 weeks away.

"It doesn't matter what BYU did in '96 or '01, the Utes were going to get in no matter what."

Clueless comment. The reason the BCS has a provision to allow a non-BCS team into a BCS game is because of BYU 1996 and 2001.

Otherwise, the Utes could have been good enough to pummel the Super Bowl champs, and they still wouldn't have been invited to a BCS bowl.

The Real Question? | 8:33 a.m. July 9, 2008
This season, will BYU play to win or play not to lose? Will Anae open it up and turn Hall loose to truly mount a Passing Attack or simply maintain the possession game? (Meyer's Gators have a passing attack, BYU plays ball control)

Will the O Line pass block well enough to put FIVE recievers down field or will Max need to hold the running back for pass protection? Obviously, this has a huge impact on the coverages and the completions, and or SACKS!!

Will Collie and Reid be allowed to stretch the coverage over the top.

Will the O line develop into a full service unit capable of blocking both the RUNand the pass? It appears that they attempt to pass block, and by-the-way, they can lean foreward on the running plays!!!

Agreed, Northern Iowa will ATTACK to new BYU secondary, with a USC transfer. Do not take this team lightly. 11-1 isn't the target.

Utes SUCK | 8:57 a.m. July 9, 2008
Lucky or good, BYU is going to go undefeated this year while Utah will be lucky to win 6 games.
Hey olman | 9:09 a.m. July 9, 2008
What's a Branco?
The real ANSWER. | 9:28 a.m. July 9, 2008
BYU WILL play not to lose rather than to win.

Their defense will be weak compared to the last two seasons and they will try to have their offense hold on to the ball longer than normal to hide their weakness.

Utah on the other hand will have the luxury of playing to win because they have most of their offense back and a great core on defense.

This year could be special for the Utes.

"National championships in college football really do not mean a thing. BYU was "voted" the National Champion because they had a undefeated season."

Meaningless National Championships???

It is a beauty contest and will be until the NCAA decides to institute a true playoff, but it's the only recognized system that we have right now.

Still, a National Championship is recognized by EVERYONE, except Ute homers, as being a greater accomplishment than a simple BCS invite.

Try convincing any college football fan that Georgia's win in the 2008 Sugar Bowl is equivalent to LSU's win in the 2008 BCS National Championship game and you'll be laughed to scorn.

BYU's final ranking in 1984 -- #1 AP; #1 Coaches

Utah's final ranking in 2004 -- #4 AP; #5 Coaches

BYU's final ranking in 1996 -- #5 AP; #5 Coaches
was almost the same as Utah's in 2004. And, they actually won more games (14-1) than Utah did in 2004.
Re: The WRONG answer | 9:28 a.m. | 9:53 a.m. July 9, 2008
"[BYU's] defense will be weak compared to the last two seasons and they will try to have their offense hold on to the ball longer than normal to hide their weakness."

The REAL answer is that BYU's defense, offense, and special teams will ALL be stronger than the last two seasons.

As long as the players stay focused and play to their potential, which I expect, this could be the best team in BYU history.

November 22nd could be the first game in the BYU/Utah rivalry in which both teams are ranked in the top 10.

National championships in college football really do not mean a thing.
BYU was "voted" the National Champion because they had a undefeated season.
Well Utah did the same thing.
Don't be so proud of your "election" to receive a meaningless title."

Wow... just wow.

And how did you get your #6 ranking?
You were voted #6 in the national ranking because of your record.
BYU was voted #1 because of their record.
I believe every national champion was voted because of their record.
Using your logic, you were elected to #6, which to me, seems as a meaningless title. They don't give a trophy to #6. They don't list #6 in the list of #6's. They don't have a trophy for "BCS Busters". I would think that if anything "BCS Busters" is a mythical, meaningless title.

If BYU's National Championship was anything but earned, I would think the NCAA would make BYU take down the endzone banner and remove them from the record book.

I can only guess that this conversation is hppening with Utefans. Why? Because of Little Brother Syndrome.

Score on UNLV, then post how great the Utes are.

Re: re: anonymous | 10:06 a.m. July 9, 2008
BYU also LOST more games in '96 than the Utes did in '04.

Utah ZERO LOSSES

@ the Wrong answer | 10:31 a.m. July 9, 2008
Like your team spirit, but specifics offer the Real ANSWERS...

Will Bronco play the new batch of speed freshmen recievers?
Will we see a lot of double slot formations?
Will Pita/George be allowed to use their speed on deeper routes.
Will the team reflect "playing the right players in the right situation" or promoting the stats of an individual?

ALL of the REAL Questions are on the Offense. The Defense always comes to play, the 3-4 is very good.
Only recommendation would be to give Jan Jorg a shot at MLB. He may be wasted outside on the end.
He's a ball hawk.

re:re/ annonymous Jones | 11:03 | 12:28 p.m. July 9, 2008
Whitt is 1-2 against Bronco.

BYU is nationally ranked in just about every publication that has a poll.

Phil Steele is the only place in the country where the Utes are ranked.

BYU is ranked higher across the board.
Utah is not known to the national media.
BYU beat Utah the past two years in a row.
BYU was undefeated in conference two years in a row.
Utah was shutout by UNLV.
BYU won conference the last two years in a row.
Utah was once ranked #6, and got to chant "We're Number Six!!!"
BYU was once ranked #1 at the end of the season and earned the National Championship, and got to chant "We're Number One!!!"
BYU football players have won the Outland trophy twice, Heisman, and Doak Walker awards.
Utah has never had a player win any national award.
Two former BYU quarterbacks have led their NFL teams to wins at the superbowl.
Utah is still waiting for Alex Smith to mature.

BYU has the better program.
Utah does not.

These are things that I know.

I hope that clears that up for any Ute fan out there.

9/6 Brigham Young at Washington
You're laughing. Why are you laughing? The Cougars, currently riding the nation's longest win streak (10 games), have finished 11-2 the past two seasons. Quarterback Max Hall was the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year in 2007 and 243-pound tailback Harvey Unga the MWC Frosh of the Year and both were first-year starters.

The offensive line, by the way, averages 6'6", 330 pounds.

So why do I have this game on my list as opposed to the Sept. 13 vengeance fest versus UCLA (the Bruins and Cougars played twice last season, splitting the series)? Because that one is in Provo, where BYU has won 12 straight.

The Huskies, meanwhile, beat Boise State and figuratively-ranked-No. 1-for-two-hours Cal in Seattle last autumn, while also coming up just a field goal shy against USC (the Huskies also led 28-7 at Hawaii before losing). Sophomore quarterback Jake Locker is a stud.

If the Cougars beat U-Dub and UCLA on consecutive weekends, it's all downhill for Bronco Mendenhall's team.

same ol' BcS from the same ol' BcS lover
(you should find another blog where you won't be bored with the discussion of BYU/Utah football)

Lately?

BYU finished the last two seasons 11-2 with bowl victories over BcS teams. They finished both seasons ranked in the top 20, and currently have the longest winning streak in the Bc sub-division.

BYU is a pre-season top 15 team and is projected to not only be a contender for a BcS bid, but also as a possible contender for the national championship.

"DO you see other top notch programs in the country who have several titles living in the past."??

When did Notre Dame stop talking about the Four Horseman and Knute Rockne?
Re: Babysitter | 2:18 p.m. July 9, 2008
Stop blogging and take care of that baby!!!

You're obviously not a true college football fan.

Pre-season speculation and discussion is what true fans are all about.

In the Potbelly-Stove leagues in New England, they start talking about next season as soon as the last out is recorded in the World Series.

11/22: Brigham Young at Utah

"The Cougars may just be undefeated when they step on the team bus for the 45-mile journey up I-15 to face the arch-rival Utes, who won eight of their last nine in 2007. Utah's Kyle Whittingham is the only coach we know who had the bird openly flipped at him during a game last season (by Wyoming's Joe Glenn, who for some reason took umbrage at an onside kick perpetrated in the midst of a 50-0 loss)."

Utah may also be undefeated if they can get by Michigan and Wyoming.

This season, Utah may be ahead of Colorado State and BYU on the Wyoming "most hated teams" list. Kyle may live to regret his bone-headed on-side kick decision.
11-2 vs. BCS??? | 3:38 p.m. July 9, 2008
HUH??? Against who?

you lost to UCLA and you beat them in a well a vegas bowl where the bruins didn't show up much like the ducks the previous year. YOu lost to BC and you lost to Tulsa. You barely beat Utah the last two years and so what. Don't make that BCS schools a bigger issue because it's against lesser schools in a BCS conf.
Re: HUH??? | 4:00 p.m. July 9, 2008
Laughing outlound at your ridiculous argument. A win is a win. A loss is a loss. Discrediting a win because the other team "didn't show up" or because it was a "close game" is the hallmark of a loser.

btw, you need to learn how to read.

Nobody said that BYU was 11-2 against BCS teams the last two years. They didn't even play that many BCS teams.
Lucky Utes | 4:27 p.m. July 9, 2008
You Ute Fans are an absoulute Joke. Utah was lucky to hang with the cougars the past 2 years. And Utah was also lucky to get one of the weakest schedules in the nation in 2004 and was even luckier playing a Pitt team that was 7-5 in a BCS game that year. You want to talk about luck Utah has had plenty of luck on their side in the past.

Re: Lucky Utes | 5:27 p.m. July 9, 2008
You're crazy. Utah beat up on quality teams (A&M turned out to be a pretty dang good team in 04) If you don't recall, the closest game in 04 was 14 points! Utah owned everyone that year. Owned them.

Let's talk about the article, and get off the silly childish arguments. BYU and Utah have had luck on their side, but they're both good programs. Some of their fans act like idiots (more BYU fans than Utah fans, but that's MY opinion because I'm a Ute fan. I'm sure cougar fans see it differently)

Go Utes! Beat Michigan
Re: Lucky Utes | 6:04 p.m. July 9, 2008
The 2004 Texas A&M team was SOLID. The Aggies were unheralded in the pre-season due to a 4-7 record the previous year, and losing to the Utes in their season opener didn't help them much in the national media either. However, they turned out to be a very strong team. They finished the regular season ranked, and went to the Cotton Bowl.

Pitt finished the regular season ranked #19, and with an 8-3 record. After losing to the Utes in the Fiesta Bowl, they fell to 8-4.

It's obvious you don't know what you're talking about. That season was only 4 yrs ago, so that information is still easily accessible. I know that BYU isn't a research university, but I think you could still read about it from the stacks at the BYU library.
BYU fans WRONG as USUAL | 6:26 p.m. July 9, 2008
Re: Lucky Utes

Pitt was NOT 7-5, they were 8-3, Big East Champs, and ranked #19 going into the Fiesta Bowl.

Texas A&M was not weak. After losing to Utah, they went on to win 8 games(IIRC) and even climbed as high as #15 in the rankings before close losses vs. Oklahoma and Texas.

North Carolina was a decent team that beat a very good Miami Hurricane team, and I think they went to a bowl game.

Arizona was weak, but still a Pac-10 opponent, one that BEAT BYU in '06 despite the fact that the Wildcats were still pathetic and BYU had one of their best teams ever.

That Ute team would have destroyed ANY BYU team, even a BYU all-star team.

grumpolman | 8:24 p.m. July 9, 2008
To: BYU fans wrong as usual RE:Lucky Utes

In 2004 there were 5 undefeated regular season teams. USC was totally the class team thumping a good Oklahoma team.

Pitt was Big East Co-champs not a very good team. 8-4 not ranked in the top 20.

Texas A&M was not that good, lost to Tennessee 38 to 7 in the Cotton Bowl (where Utah should have played and probably would have been beaten)

North Carolina played in the Continental Tire Bowl: Boston College 37, North Carolina 24 was not ranked.

Arizona had 3 wins all season in 2004 second to last in their conference. Ranked one of the worst teams.

Utah never did beat a quality opponent in 2004, not their fault, but they shouldn't brag that much about it.

"Here we are today at Rice-Eccles-Miller-Opie Taylor Stadium, celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the only really good season we ever had, when we busted the now non-existent BCS system and played an overrated Pitt team whose coach bailed on them. Of course, our coach had bailed on us, too, but who can blame him with our tradition of fair weather, raving lunatic fans who support us to rarely sold out games from the comfort of their geeky computers.

Anyway, we are here to celebrate that grand season which started our historic run of one outright confernce championship every 50 years (at least we hope we can get one this year, because we're tired of BYU going for it's 49th in a row), and we appreciate this glorious crowd of 8,673 fans, doubling last year's average attendance.
Re: grumpolman | 9:23 p.m. July 9, 2008
True, Pitt was not a top 20 team AFTER the Fiesta Bowl, but they WERE prior to gettling throttled by the Utes, and still finished ranked in the final polls.

True, A&M lost to TN, but that doesn't mean they they were a poor team that year. A LOT of good teams lost to Tennessee in 2004. Utah was not one of them, and contrary to your blue-goggled opinion, would most likely would have dropped the Volunteers as well.

True, UNC lost to Boston College in the Continental Tire Bowl, but nobody has beaten the Eagles in a Bowl game over their last EIGHT post-season appearances. UNC may not have been ranked, but they DID beat a good Miami team, and their bowl game against BC was a lot closer than their matchup with the Utes earlier that year.

The Utes beat 4 BCS teams (2 w/ 8-win seasons-QUALITY), 5 teams who received bowl invitations (QUALITY), and faced no I-AA opponents (QUALITY). Last year's "celebrated" Cougar team beat 2 BCS opponents (while losing to one of them earlier in the season), 4 teams who received a bowl invitation (1 finishing w/ a losing record), and a 1-AA opponent.

Ute fans arguing that being #6 is better than being #1 in the country.

Last year, though, the Utes get props. They are this years defending "TIED FOR 3RD IN MWC BUSTERS", and are looking to defend 3rd in the MWC two consecutive years in a row.

Kyle also has the longest "Other Coach Flips You Off On TV" streak going in the country at one consecutive year.

I think both those streaks compare to BYU, holding onto the longest win streak in the nation going into the season. (to be fair, they are counting wins over both UNLV and Utah, who are cupcakes--(did Utah score on UNLV last year?).

The Cougars are just plain lucky -- lucky they practice well, lucky they train well, lucky they have a coach who places a higher priority on principles than on winning, lucky they have proper facilities, lucky they work hard to get better, lucky they have been able to find success in spending thousands of man hours on recruiting talent, etc.

To grumpolman | 8:12 a.m. July 10, 2008
If Utah shouldn't brag too much about 2004 because they "never beat a quality opponent", then BYU should NEVER mention 1984 because in addition to their 'great' wins over 3-8-1 Pitt and 6-6 Michigan, they played in the WAC which was the 1980's equivalent of the Sun Belt. On top of that BYU had SEVERAL CLOSE GAMES against that WEAK SCHEDULE.

p.s. Utah did beat a few quality opponents as has been pointed out by other posters above.

RE: BYU fans wrong as usual

We'll give you credit for having a great team in 2004. However, since you want to deal with hypotheticals, the BYU 1983,1984, and 1996 Cougs could have beaten your 2004 "untouchables."
re:To Rich | 7:41 a.m. | 8:27 a.m. July 10, 2008
Geeze, I wish you guys would get a clue on this whole tithing issue. Talk to your Stake President and ask them if tithing is used to pay for BYU athletics.

Not a cent of tithing goes to "support the preferred addiction of obnoxious zoobie fans like the ones who post here."

The ignorance card can't be played, becuse that has been made clear by the church on numerous occasions.

Just to make it clear, the UofU, BYU, Utah State, Notre Dame, and Bob Jones University all recieve the exact same amount of tithes to support their athletic programs-- Zero, zilch, nada.

I know it is difficult for Utes to make their arguements without falsehood, lies, and selective memories, but knowing the truth might just make paying your tithing a little easier.

BYU has a National Championship Trophy and ended the season ranked #1.

Utah played in the BCS Fiesta Bowl and was ranked #6.

BYU has the longest win streak in the nation, and went undefeated in conference the past two years, making them the two-time defending champions.

Utah finished tied for third last year and did not score against UNLV.

Use facts, not fiction, for your warm glow...
