Many of the polls are already out, and Phil Steele is the only one to mention the Utes, even under the category of other teams to watch.

So far the national spotlight is nowhere even near RES.

oh, I could see it happen if the big 10 adds another member...who isn't from the big 12...thus the pac 10 might want to follow suit with the other leagues, acc, sec, big 12, big 10 and move to 12. If the northwest school's were cool with this set-up, it would work great:

PAC 12
N
Wash
Wash St
Oreg
Oreg St
BYU
Utah
S
Cal
Stan
USC
UCLA
Ariz
ASU
ReRe:FYI | 8:40 p.m. July 10, 2008
I see nothing misleading about it. You people rag on Utah for their fluke loss AT UNLV (that's on the road, not at home) just a few years after you lose not once, but twice to them AT HOME (that's in provo, not Las Vegas). Spin it however you wish, this kills your caustic remarks about Utah's loss. Utah's first loss to UNLV (in Las Vegas, 43-41)since 1979. By the way, how do you spin 2004?

Regarding Michigan, you made an even better case about that being a terrible Michigan team when they still couldn't beat the kittens w/an injured qb!! LOL!! The game evolved drastically from the '60's to the '80's. Nice try, you fail. You LITERALLY beat nobody that year. Any of the other top-10 teams would've smashed you that year, easily. The problem was the voters not being able to undo their vacuous over-ranking of PITT to begin the year. They dropped the ball and paid for it in the end. The ONLY people who truly agreed w/the end result were the fantastic dreamers residing in provo. LOL!!

Not so much that it was a "fluke loss". you went scoreless, and the UNLV coaches admitted in the paper to laughing at your team during gamefilms.

What was this powerhouse UNLV's record. It must have been good.

Nah BYU wins, it's lucky. Utah loses, it's a fluke.

Utah has had so many flukes over the past forty years it's scary.

Ute logic.
BYU COUG | 11:37 a.m. July 11, 2008
Whether the Cougars go to the Pac 10 or not,
they will always kick trash!! GO COUGS!!!!!
BYU: 17 Utah: 10
money | 11:47 a.m. July 11, 2008
As a BYU fan I'm willing to admit I want BYU to join the PAC-10 for the money. A PAC-10 bowl appearance would bring millions to BYU's athletic program. If the MWC had the same pay-outs. . . .BYU should stay in the MWC.

The money greed goes both ways.

Obviously the PAC-10 doesn't care too much about the academic issue, simply because UC-Irvine, UC-Davis, UC-San Diego, Pepperdine University and other schools in California have better academic ratings than Colorado, BYU and Utah, but they will never be considered PAC-10 candidates because their athletic programs stink.
Re: FYI 2:16 July 10 | 12:20 p.m. July 11, 2008
How was Bosco's leg in that 3-pt victory over eventual 3-7-1 Pitt? How was his leg during those narrow victories over Hawai'i, Wyoming, and Air Force? Those 4 teams kept it a lot closer than Michigan.
...oops... | 12:24 p.m. July 11, 2008
Sorry, my finger slipped. I meant 6-pt victory over Pitt.
Re: FYI | 12:57 p.m. July 11, 2008
Tell me about all of Utah 2004's goal line stands, heroic comebacks, playing through injury and pain.

Stop relying solely on scores and stats.

Someday, when you're older, you'll discover that there's vast difference between simply winning a game and being a true champion.

Despite what Utah homers may think, BYU's tough win over Michigan and Boise State's tough win over Oklahoma were much more impressive and memorable than Utah's easy win over Pittsburgh.
Re: FYI 12:57 p.m. | 1:46 p.m. July 11, 2008
W R O N G !!! Utah's blow out of Pitt was WAY more impressive than BYU escaping San Diego with a W over the worst Michigan team of my generation. Boise's Fiesta Bowl win, and opponent, were both more EXCITING, but as far as impressive....well, they didn't exactly dominate their regular season opponents (Wyoming, Hawai'i, San Jose St.) as handily as the Utes did, so I would say, that at the very least, would be a push.

Either way, both the Utes and the Broncos EARNED their accolades. They didn't default to it. Perhaps someday, when you're wiser, you'll discover there's a vast difference between raising the bar via RECENT accomplishments, versus some glory* team almost a quarter of a century ago.

Soak up the sun now, 'cause there's a rain storm coming September. You won't need any lucky blocked kicks this time, since you won't be getting that close.

GO BRUINS!!!

Man, get a life!
What is with the negative vibes?

Who gives a rats rear end about an event that happened well over 20 years ago, much less comparing it to the events of 2004!

In 1984 most of the NCAA was still rinning some form of the wish bone and butte tackling.

BYU's short passing game put entertainment back into football, an equalizer used by the underdog to attack the linebackers. Thats why Divid Mills (BYU
TE 1984 caught10 passes against MICH and Kelly Smith walked into the endzone on the Greenbay sweep. Just watch the film and understand what your looking at. Amen.

The game has evolved, why can't you!!!
Re: FYI | 2:54 p.m. July 11, 2008
Your generation, LOL. Doesn't sound like you're old to even remember the 1984 Holiday Bowl, let alone include that Michigan team in "your generation".

The ONLY people "impressed" by Utah's bowl win over Pittsburgh are Utah homers.

Utah had a great team, but the only thing remarkable about their season is they were the first non-BCS team to crack the very newly created BCS bowl monopoly.

In ten years, Utah's invitation to the Fiesta Bowl will be nothing but a footnote in the history of college football.

Meanwhile, BYU's 1984 National Championship will forever be included in the ever-growing list of National Champions.

Recent history?

BYU: 22-4 overall, 16-0 MWC, two straight MWC championships, 2 straight top 20 finishes, longest current winning streak in the country.

Utah: 17-9 overall, 10-6 MWC, two straight 3rd place finishes in conference, 0 top 20 finishes.

GO COUGARS!

and go Utes (beat Michigan and Oregon St.), until we meet in November.

See, you're too clueless to realize that BYU beating UCLA and Washington is a good thing for Utah.
Re: FYI 2:54 | 3:19 p.m. July 11, 2008
Doesn't make any difference to me who beats Michigan OR Utah. I graduated from UCLA; B.S. Finance, class of '95.

I'd watch what you say about being "clueless". You sound like you went to BYU. I heard your student body proclaims themselves the "Harvard of the West". HA HA HA HA HA. PRICELESS! And clueless!
re:Re: FYI 2:54 | 10:55 p.m. July 11, 2008
"I graduated from UCLA; B.S. Finance, class of '95."

Are you sure it was a B.S. Finance degree, and not a BS in Finance?

I live in So Cal, and the only people who are impressed with UCLA are the people who went to UCLA.

If you live in So. cal still, you know that there was no one who cared about the Utah-Pitt Fiesta Bowl.

All anyone needs to take from your post to understand where former UCLA students are coming from is contained in the last line of your post.

"HA HA HA HA HA. PRICELESS! And clueless!"

That's the type of post a UCLA education will get you.
Re: FYI | 10:55 p.m | 9:11 a.m. July 12, 2008
"I live in So Cal, and the only people who are impressed with UCLA are the people who went to UCLA."

You must have earned YOUR "BS" degree in Utah County. Deloitte & Touche seemed pretty impressed with my UCLA degree, and since I've been living on the East coast since '98, I wouldn't know what people in SoCal cared about back in January 2005. When I DID live in California however, I don't seem to recall anybody being impressed with a BYU degree other than those who went to BYU, so don't even TRY to compare your alma mater with mine.

I remember the sports bar my friends and I went to that night, Utah-Pitt was on almost every screen. True "college football fans" watch interesting matchups, and THAT was an intriguing game.

BYU fans can't see over the Rockies, so they tend to assume everybody lives out West. That sounds about right for that backwater education* you folks earn in your little bubble.

See you in September.

Re: Misguided Bruin | 8:22 p.m. July 14, 2008
Your "ACADEMIC quality" was ranked #31. BYU has a good Accounting program, but that's it. Your ranking was an evaluation of BYU's own [rabidly zealous] students assessing THEMSELVES(#6), their ability to suck up to HR (arguably the DUMBEST people in the business world), and low annual tuition (#1).

Did you notice their average starting salary compared to the rest of those top programs? No wonder recruiters love you.

Again, your ACADEMIC quality was #31. I'm not overly impressed. Only Mormons, BYU students & alumni, and cheap HR Directors are.

GO BRUINS!!!
MIA | 9:07 a.m. July 15, 2008
And your academic quality was ranked...

oh yeah, no ranking for UCLA, didn't even make the top 50; very, um, unimpressive.

Only delusional UCLA students and alumni would believe that a program that isn't even ranked is superior to a program that is ranked 7th in the country and 1st in the West.
Google it! | 10:21 a.m. July 15, 2008
UCLA's academic ranking is #25 (U.S. News and World Report).

Business School Comparison
2007 Graduates employed at graduation (full-time)
BYU - 93.3 %
UCLA - 79.0 %

The rest of the UCLA grads must out parking cars or trying out for bit parts in a movie.

Utah is not competitive in enough sports to be in the Pac-10. Also, they are weak academically, they don't sell out their small FB stadium, and they would easily lose 3-4 more games a year in FB and 7-10 in BB just being in the Pac-10.

I can see BYU making a case to be in the Pac-10 conference, but Utah just cannot make a strong case. BYU has a national following, great academics, competes in men's volleyball, rugby, swimming, and could compete in other sports.

BYU would be middle to top of the conference each year. Utah would be at the bottom most years.
Academically Challenged | 10:28 a.m. July 16, 2008
In other news, Washington State football (916 in 2008) was penalized eight scholarships this year and Arizona football (893 in 2007, 902 in 2008) was docked four scholarships last year because both schools fell short of the minimum 925 score for academic progress established by the NCAA.

And BYU football (946 in 2008) and Utah football (944 in 2008) somehow don't measure up academically with the PAC-10 schools?

Stanford - 986
California - 967
USC - 948
Washington - 948
UCLA - 941
Arizona State - 933
Oregon State - 926
Oregon - 921

I know the PAC 10 does not wnat to expand, but lets say in a few years the college athletics landscape changes and they are sort of forced to do it. BYU will not be considered as they don't play on sundays and the culture does not fit in the PAC 10. They might want to consider UNLV as a serious candidate. It is in a fairly large TV market, fits the geographical footprint, and is an excellent travel destination city. Vegas is practically So Cal anyway with the culture. Granted the football program needs a little work, but throw some BCS money at it and it would be respectable. UNLV is on a serious up swing in b-ball and would right now finish in the top 2-4 in the PAC 10. UNLV also has some other decent sports programs such as W. Soccer, W. Volleyball M&W swimming, and M&W golf. Not only that, it is the premere academic institution in Nevada and it houses a dental school and a top 100 law school. I think UNLV would be a great fit in th PAC 10.
dont really care | 7:17 p.m. Feb. 12, 2009
The reason so many people don't want BYU is because they know they will be do better than many of the teams in the league and may beat the glorious USC. I don't recall UCLA being a challenge this past year. It is about money, but it is also about being afraid of what will happen. The Pac-10 conf. has an assistant commissioner who is a BYU alumni - put him in charge and maybe there is hope
