I'm glad that with the change in name comes a bigger opportunity for funds. Does this mean the it will finally start funding the arts so the music dept. can move from being next to the auto shop, and have more than 4 practise rooms? Probably not. Pres. Sederburg doesn't feel the arts are academic enough.

Everyone needs to go to a university. Therefore, every educational institution, however useful, must necessarily become a university eventually.

Look at Oxford: it went from being a vocational polytechnic to a full university, and it has done a world of good.

I see your point. My degree is in hotel management, which is why I chose UVU over Oxford (as most people do). I could not have learned to manage a hotel without studying it at a university. I can't imagine how people succeeded at managing hotels before universities offered degrees in the subject.

I would advise all universities everywhere to develop a degree in everything, and urge employers not to hire anybody for anything unless they have a degree from a fully-accredited university.

Right you are. Right you are.

For instance: if I needed some gardening done around my house, I would only hire someone who has a degree in gardening from an accredited university.

If I required a Monte Cristo sandwich, I would turn only to those with a degree certifying they have studied Monte Cristo preparation at a university.

Someday I will have my wish. Until then, who will garden for me? Or make me a sandwich?

UVU, I plead with you: please develop a degree program for every conceivable human activity!

But what about adding PhD programs?

Surely you're not qualified for anything unless you have a doctorate in it.

I've run my hotel for 14 years, but I'm going back to graduate school, because I need a doctorate to learn my trade.

I love UVU. It has great teachers, smaller classes, and an environment where you don't have to look over your shoulder all the time to be sure nobody is going to turn you in for honor code violations!

As people learn that they can get a first rate education at UVU and don't have to feel like they are in a Nazi prison camp like they do at BYU, the enrollment at UVU will surpass BYU!

UVU rocks!

Hey, I go to UVU and there are a lot people who are Mormon, but are not jack Mormons. It's still a great institution. I like how there is a variety in people, races, religion ect. It makes a school more diverse and better! GO UVU!!!

The institute of religion at UVU is outstanding. Probably the best in the church outside of BYU. UVU has a HIGH population of returned missionaries as well as LDS faculty. UVU will be GREAT mainly because of the graduate programs that it will offer. Right now there is just one masters program in Education but that will certainly grow quickly in the next decade. Getting into BYU is a lot of who you know or where you are from. If you are an average student from Las Vegas you will be welcomed with open arms to BYU. If you are an average Utah County student you have NO CHANCE of getting into BYU unless you are a hot football recruit. UVU opens the door to all the great Utah county kids that can't get into BYU.

I love all the talk between the Y and UVU. So many people think that UVU is inferior to the Y. I graduated from UVSC in accounting and I never tried to enroll at BYU. I have a great job with a great salary and I am happy as can be with my education.

Wonderful article yet it's unfortunate that Deseret News avoided mentioning that Chris Cannon made some very controversial and offensive comments. Here are a few as I remember them:

1) In referring to his defeat in the Primary he said more people are present here than voted;

2) He then said that he was looking for something to do and that "they" were open to offers and that there would be some ethical rules that would have to be overcome but it could be done;

Finally, he didn't say much about UVU becoming a University or about the wonderful library instead he talked about how he was out of country dealing with "immigration issues" but a change of plans allowed him to attend.

I was highly offended by his comments. I hope the Deseret News does its job next time and tells the people that Cannon was being unethical in saying that if offered a job he could get around the ethics rules.

I like UVU because they don't make you read Shakespeare and Milton and all that rubbish. I didn't have to learn stupid things like what happened in history. I just got my job training and got out. Whenever my "university-educated" friends try to talk to me about Plato or physics or sixteenth-century Barroque architecture, I just flash them my latest paystub, and watch them squirm.

UVU is a great school regardless of the Institute.

I hate to break this to you, but the UVU Institute of Religion is a joke. The instructors there are about as backward and full of false doctrine and nonsense as any in the CES.

Beware what you swallow from them.

You should give up on UVU and BYU. People go to UVU for a glorified tech/voed school, BYU to get married, and The U to get an education.

Hey Student, I bet you say that about all the institutes, kind of sounds like you have an apostate chip on your shoulder.

I am happy to see the growth of UVU, back when I was there it was Utah Tech and then UVCC, but I loved my experience there, my teachers were so personable and it was a very comfortable atmosphere. I enjoy the smaller schools and probably would not like it now that it is so large. But education is a must these days, they just closed down a Chrysler plant in Missouri yesterday, unless those people have some education, they are not going to find jobs, cause they have such limited skills.
