Selfish Utah County | 7:15 a.m. July 1, 2008
Utah County is too provincial and selfish to ever devise a county system such as other counties have along the Wasatch Front. The Utah County commissioners are good at making cost comparisons with other counties in order to justify raises, but can't quite seem to come up with a county-wide address system or library system as other counties it's size has.

I'm delighted with this effort to share book collections by the four city libraries. What a refreshing change to have librairians commit to helping one another instead of jealously gaurding "their" collections. Twenty five years ago, and probably many times since, the Utah County Library Board tried to get a similiar project going county wide, but there were so many possissive librairians that did not want to share "their" collections, that we could never get a cooperative agreement. I loved the comment that libraries should be places where information is available for everyone.

I have always thought that a libriarian should be delighted every time a book was worn right out and had to be ordered again. Those worn books are a symbol of what I want; so many people have used it, read it, carried it around, that the library decided to purchase 10 more copies.

Best wishes for the libraries that decided to pool their resources and work together to benefit each of their communites. I still hope for the day when Utah County will be willing to committ to a cooperative system. Encouraging reading should be our objective, not preserving our collections for posterity.

Selfish Utah County,
Utah County can't make the cities up and change. Although the County has looked at these changes it is generally the cities that have blocked them. Just as the other person said it is the few stingy librarians who would not give up their collections. Go talk to Orem Library sometime.
