That's fine. Don't follow a prophet of God. Follow your prophet of the latest cultural fad. When trends go in and out of fashion you can flip and flop. Thanks Mr. Beck for keeping it real.

Dick Cheney and now Glenn Beck at BYU. Really disappointing.

I see one error, as someone else has mentioned. The Constitution of the United States begins with "We the people . . .", not the Declaration of Independence. I'm not sure if that error originated with Mr. Beck, or the article's author.
LeRoy | 10:42 a.m. June 30, 2008
I am not sure why he would look for a leader at BYU .. if Mitt Romney is discarded because of his faith, and that is exactly why he was discarded despite his business acumen and tremendous successes in such pathetically weak electoral choices, what makes him think that the country will ever see us more than those weird people with many wives from Utah?
Re: ET Bass | 10:54 a.m. June 30, 2008
Guys like ET Bass entertain themselves by shooting spitballs, but rarily have anything useful or enlightening to add to the discussion.

Does anyone know if Beck is an active member of the LDS Church?
JohnT.Valentine | 11:07 a.m. June 30, 2008
Thank you Mr.Beck!!! America, we need this kind of positive talk. As red blooded Americans, we all should shout from the mountain tops. I remember when I was in my youth. I heard a powerful leader of a then, communist country, state "we are going to bury you within" Such fear came over me, when I heard those terrible words. I have traveled, in my life time,to many countries. My personal experience, (except for Venezuela), was the good people of the world, love AMERICA!!!Many called America The Promised Land. America, needs many more glenn Brcks. Socialism,marksism,dictators,etc.. Never worked and never will work. Government of the people,by the people and for the people. United we stand. Remenber when it was said " the enemy has awakened the sleeping giant!!! Awake America. Let's be positive and God will bless America, with his rishes blessings.

The message was good, even for those who don't like the messenger. We can improve those things around us (self, family, community....). If enough people do this, the world will be a much better place.
@ Dear Lew... | 11:12 a.m. June 30, 2008
I appreciate your son's willingness to serve, I have had family and friends who have served and two who have died thanks to Bush's War. It bothers me that they died defending you and Glenn beck's rights. Your son isn't the only one to serve to defend ALL our rights. I'm sure you would prefer it if you could pick who's rights were fought and died for, but we can't. And just like those I know, love and support, they knew the risks.

Ernest T. Bass: "Guys like this think they have all the answers but their solutions are rarely feasible or practical."

Yeah, everybody do your best to put your own house in order, don't wait for or rely on the government, but be informed and vote, and participate in government. How feasible or practical is that? What is Beck THINKING?!?!
SLC gal | 11:23 a.m. June 30, 2008
Curious - yes. He mentions the church, his ward, etc... all the time on his show!!!
Scott | 11:29 a.m. June 30, 2008
This is so funny. The only place in America where Glenn Beck could get an audience is in Provo Utah. And on a Sunday no less. I imagine for the red bloods in Provo, this was better than sacrament meeting.
Go Texans!! | 12:09 p.m. June 30, 2008
What we need is another Texan in office that will do what he thinks is best and follow his own heart and mind and tell all others to go to heck.

Say what you will about W., whether you like him or hate him, the dude stands firm in what he believes and is not easily swayed by either side. That's a Texan making and stand and someone who can make decisions for themselves!!
Re: Scott | 12:12 p.m. June 30, 2008

JT | 12:20 p.m. June 30, 2008
C'mon, you guys have Bill Maher, whose prophet is Hugh Hefner, and Keith Olbermann, who hates conservatives with every fiber of his being. Let us have a self-depreciating Glenn Beck. There are plenty of places to get your worldview affirmed. Me, I listen to pieces of all of them, some I agree with, others I don't. Beck's a lot better than most rightwing radio types.
to scott | 12:20 p.m. June 30, 2008
Was that suppose to be a put down? All it says about Provo is they have awesome people. Scott get a life.
Same Diff | 12:27 p.m. June 30, 2008
Actually the Declaration of Independence starts out with "When in the course of human events" not "We the People" That's found in the Preamble of the Constitution.
Either Glenn got it wrong or the reporter got it wrong.
Ed H | 12:41 p.m. June 30, 2008
I didn't read a Church News byline on this article. I think you must have it in the wrong edition.
Interesting Observation... | 12:59 p.m. June 30, 2008
I guess Michael Moore wasn't available to participate as well? We ran him out on a rail because he was just an "entertainer." As opposed to Beck, who is a modern-day Paul. Hmmm. Interesting.
Re: "Re: Anonymous" | 1:54 p.m. June 30, 2008
Why does anyone have to follow anything? Profit, fads, etc.? I think you and your peers are fixated with following something. I'm not sure that makes for a good leader.
Observer | 1:58 p.m. June 30, 2008
I love watching Glenn Beck on TV. Sure, he's just another opportunist who feeds off of people's fear and discontent, but his face gets all red, and those blood vessels poke out when he's talking about some unimportant issue. You gotta love that. And when he keeps interrupting his guests, you gotta love that also. He's like an old carny, or sidewalk preacher, with a tv show. And his books? Boy, do those things stink. I mean, I love watching the guy, he's a real buffoon, but who takes him seriously?
Joseph | 1:57 p.m. June 30, 2008
Hmmm, sounds a lot like Barack Obama (who Beck ridicules on a daily basis for a big paycheck).
@ Observer | 2:23 p.m. June 30, 2008
Old Carny?? Sidewalk preacher with a t.v. show??!! What great comparisons!! But you missed snake oil or banana oil salesman. I'd say political candidate as well, but he'll never be one of those. He might talk a good line, but if he were to run for office and win, he'd take a huge paycut. Just like Rush, afraid to put up or zip up.

Actually. He goes out on the road on a "comedy tour" I wonder exactly how many people pay? Yet, people blast Olbermann for inserting humor into the news.

I've heard GB mention his ward, etc... on the air & yet I've also heard him be very un-Christ like.

Render God Caesar... sounds like Glenny has issues.
just another frustrated actor | 2:40 p.m. June 30, 2008
Just another rabid conservative and frustrated wannabe actor who likes to cry like a baby in front of people.
And THIS is supposed to win the hearts and minds of the rest of the conservatives. (probably does, actually)
chris | 2:43 p.m. June 30, 2008
Glenn Beck has made a six figure income since he was 18 years old and it just shows what alcohol, several marriages, a drive for money, drugs and now who knows what he takes to keep up his phony lifestyle. How many people out there listen to his hatred in the 1990's? How many people listened to his hatred at the beginning of this decade? Yes, Glenn has changed, and in 2 more years he will change again and then in 2 more years after that he will change again, when you work in media you always have to say something new to keep up on the ratings. I would love to see Glenn be a fireman, teacher, nurse, gardener, policeman in the next life. Yes, I do love America and I also love Canada, Mexico, Russia and England and Korea--the future is not in countries borders, but in the economy and honesty and good will and family. My advice to Mr. Beck, get out of media, become a farmer, don't love money so much and you won't have to take the meds. PS D&C 6:7 Seek wisdom and not riches.
Just Ed | 3:04 p.m. June 30, 2008
Conservatism in America is in critical condition. The fact that Glenn Beck is one of their premier spokesmen is, I suppose, all the proof one needs.

Christ would not be throwing bombs at Iraq or any other country unless it was truly a last resort. We are mighty Americans, and we can do anything eh? Well, why can't
not kills hundreds of thousands of people to "protect" ourselves. God isn't american, God is a human being.
He doesn't love one country more than another,
he loves us as one. We need to start coming together,
and stop using violence in his name. Any Republican
or Democrat who supported the evil and ill planned invasion of Iraq was wrong. That was a GREAT sin,
and many innocent people died. We put the lives
of our innocent ahead of theirs, and that
is not Christ like at all.

Obama and McCain both are better than Bush, so
no matter what we need to come together under
our new leader. We need to look out for each other,
build each other up, and stop drawing the line in the sand. United we Stand....

Tell that Rush Limbaughesque BS to the Americans that voted out the lunatic conservatives from both houses last election and the millions of new, fresh Americans who have registered in droves to vote Democratic.
Stay with your wacky right is right counterrevolutionary group. They are nothing to America but fools.

Yes, we agree we "need a leader". Since you obviously are one to watch from the sidelines, I think it's safe to say that it won't be you.

GOD BLESS AMERICA, NOW AND FOREVER, DESPITE WHAT THE LIBERAL AND LAZY PINE FOR!!!....
Wayne Rout | 3:54 p.m. June 30, 2008
Thank God for Glen Beck and others who have the courage to speak the truth no matter how unpopular it might be with the the leftist that have infected our society. We are heading toward very difficult times. I only hope our nation can survive until a leader will/can step forward.
Anonymous | 4:18 p.m. June 30, 2008
Boy the liberal hypocrites come out in droves.

Completely the ignoring their own hate and the hate of their pundits and talkers like maher and olbermann and o'donnel and reid.

They get paid for their appearances too, why aren't YOU condemning that?!

Clearly it is not about hate or money.

But hate for a conservative speaker.

Hate for all conservative speakers.

All you hatemongering liberals should know this:

Glen Beck I know for fact is a voracious reader, from biographies, to books that analyze and critic the politics of america, to what's going in our current times, etc.

He is very well read.

All conservative talkers whether you like them or not are very knowledgable and very well read.

And almost all of them are NOT republicans but independent conservatives.

And all that I know of have been very critical of Bush and his liberal leanings and governing.

And almost all do not like McCain, but agree the other choice is much worse for america.

And one thing is very clear, is their love for their country and it's greatness.

They find no need to go over seas and criticize it and it's leaders to foriegners like liberals do.
John | 4:20 p.m. June 30, 2008
Maybe we don't need a leader; maybe we need democracy. Afterall, aren't our elected representatives really public servants?

Isn't it interesting that the critics will not identify themselves.

---Any Republican

I love people that say this. Apparently apathy and turning a blind eye to tyranny is a better solution. If you are an LDS poster you may remember that Pres Hinckley said that sometimes people of good conscience need to intervene to stop a dictator. (this was said in conference just prior to or just after the start of the war)
kathyn | 4:42 p.m. June 30, 2008
I like Glenn Beck. He seems to be unafraid to tell it like it is. He goes after repubs and dems, alike. He'd be the first to tell you he's not a journalist ("I'm just a rodeo clown") but he seems to "get it" much more than bonafide, credentialed journalists. Too many Americans have their heads buried in the sand and don't want to hear bad news. Beck has been right on a lot of things, such as oil and the devalutation of the dollar, long before this was acknowledged by the regular MSM.
neocons of the day | 4:42 p.m. June 30, 2008
Beck, Rush O'Hannity, and all those other guys that make a living spreading division and claptrap are heroes only to the diminishing splinter-group that for a while after 9/11 got what they wanted, (putting the awful Bush & Cheney team in charge of the country) but it is a totally new deal today.
America (the REAL America that I remember) is bouncing back and will never succumb to any that resembles fascism.
The poor, dumb conservatives of the day haven't even recognized how divisive and nasty they've become.
Re: Doug | 10:02 am | 4:45 p.m. June 30, 2008
YOU ARE WRONG! Glenn Beck IS a Bush apologist. How do I know? Because I've met him. I live on the East Coast, and he speaks at my church often enough (and yes, Curious | 11:04 a.m., he IS an active LDS church member). Also, former ward member of ours, was a former ward member of his back in Connecticut. She's a total Beck "groupie." She buys all his books off the shelf, and all the crap the falls from his lips.

Beck often goes on and on about what a great leader Bush is, and how he is saving our country from terrorists at those evening firesides at our stake center.

And he's a total phoney!
Will no longer read the DN | 4:49 p.m. June 30, 2008
The DN could do well to eliminate these comment post sections. EVERY section of this paper that allows comments to be posted contains posts that are confrontational/antagonzing/negative/bitter/vengeful/vindictive. There is scant rational thought and discussion. The majority of discussions and comments are prejudiced and are based on little fact and mostly opinion. Please, DN get rid of these comment post sections. Nothing good has come from them.
unilateral politics ... again? | 5:07 p.m. June 30, 2008
So, its no big deal if Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilley, Coulture, etc., can beat up on liberals (aka Democrats) ad infinitum, but when the right-wing comes under intense scrutiny - this is just cause for war?
Give me a [bleeping] break!

"I love people that say this. Apparently apathy and turning a blind eye to tyranny is a better solution."

"Tyranny" had nothing to do with the Iraq war. If we were in a "War Against Tyranny" we'd be bogged down in our own hemisphere, as opposed to the Middle East.

Of course, Saddam had oil, and that makes all the difference.

VIrginian | 5:43 p.m. June 30, 2008
Utah Mormons love to believe the founding fathers were religious zealots like themselves. Nothing could be further from that. With the exception of John Adams, the founding fathers were not particularly religious, and Thomas Jefferson, who wrote our famous Declaration of Independence, thought Christianity was full of hypocrisy and delusions. He thought the bible was a fairy tale and was so against organized religion, he refused to allow the University of Virginia to have any religious building on it. These founding fathers are laughing (more like crying) at the unintelligent religious zealots who think America is for them. America was founded as a SECULAR nation, you morons. No wonder BYU isn't a prestigious school, if this is the level IQ its students have!
RE: neocon of... | 5:50 p.m. June 30, 2008
So it's okay if the neolibs do it?

I hear more palpable hatred coming from the left and their talkers and speakers. dividing people by race, class, politics. etc

But that is okay because you agree with it?

But conservative talk some how they are bad and dividing everyone up?

Liberals, hypocrites to the very bone.
easy to prove | 6:02 p.m. June 30, 2008
Yeah, right RE: neocon of .... 5:50.
All one has to do is read a book by conservative Ann Coulter, or turn on the Rush Limbaugh Show to hear the word liberal used in every other sentence to prove how full of [bleep] you are in saying neocons don't trash liberals.
neocons are sick puppies | 6:06 p.m. June 30, 2008
Neocons that insist that they don't trash liberals every chance today (especially now that the country is headed clearly to the left) they get are clearly sicker and more deluded than I first thought.
