The loss was a tough one, especially off an own goal. ReAL needs to find a way to finish on the road. That being said I watched the game on TV and that field is horrible. A convert baseball outfield. I've played on better in Community Rec. leagues. The team played solid and Jamison Olave is a stud on the back line. Too bad you can't vote for him to be an All-star. We really need to finish the shots that we get, but keep shooting.
Keep your chins up boys and lets take care of business against DC on Thursday.
GO RSL!!!
Robert | 8:05 a.m. June 29, 2008
Like I said, boys: OUR goal -- the one that WE put the ball in to get points -- is the one where the guy on the OTHER team is standing. Yes, THAT one. I know it's confusing, but trust me. Don't put the ball in the other goal; that's THEIR goal. If you do, THEY get the point. Got that? Now, let's work on that in practice this week. Meanwhile, if we want pizza, we have to buy our own; Mr. Checketts has said he won't buy us pizza if we score for the other guys.

Surprise, Surprise. RSL lose embarrassingly. They are an embarrassment to this great state of UTEah.
Boggs | 9:35 a.m. June 29, 2008
RSL lose again and don't deserve their expensive stadium. Maybe their coach should teach them how to put the ball in the other goal instead of trying to help the other team win.
Which team is "Salt Lake" | 10:16 a.m. June 29, 2008
I watched the last 40 minutes of the match. How come our team doesn't have "Salt Lake" on their jerseys? I always have to look at the other team's jerseys to see which color we are. Doesn't Checketts get enough money from the taxpayers to put "Salt Lake" on the jersey. What in the world is Xango anyway??
Leonard | 10:37 a.m. June 29, 2008
Good news: RSL scored
Bad news: They scored for the wrong team.
Own goal | 11:28 a.m. June 29, 2008
Always tough to lose on an own goal since it is basically an incredibly lucky break for the other team. It happens though. It is how Liverpool lost in the Champions League this year. Beltran has been improving. Let's hope this is just a one time fluke for him.

We are playing tough defense. Olave should be an all star. He is one of the most solid defenders in the league.

Obviously we need better finishing. Has Williams put a shot on goal this year? We really need Espindola back and then another dangerous scorer. I still think we need Beckerman at Defensive Mid and Morales at attacking mid. We then need to find two dangerous scorers and put them out on the wings. If Espindola was healthy they could try it with him on one of the wings. Look at a team like Barcelona. They have midfielders like Ronaldihno, Messi, Robihno. Your midfielders should be the best ball handlers and shooters you can find. Williams is not a scorer, Dema is not a scorer, Beckerman is an occasional scorer. We have one midfielder who is a potential 10 goal guy. I hope one of the "secret trialists" works out.
wow | 12:37 p.m. June 29, 2008
I'm surprised by the uneducated posts on here, not only by the RSL haters but also but the fans. RSL doesn't play DC on Thursday they play Houston and Robinho doesn't play for Barca, he plays for Real Madird but I guess I will accept those as innocent mistakes. Anyways though, its a tough one to swallow to have the game be lost on an own goal. But I think RSL is still headed on the right path, I agree that Espindola needs to get healthy and maybe put him out on the wings because I think he can provide the crosses to set up the Dr. Hopefully RSL can get back on track against Houston this Thursday as it will be exciting to see a nationally televised game. Don't let this loss distract you, RSL is still in second place, and are still in good position. Keep plugging away and the results will sure enough come. You have beat the best teams in the league and have fought hard on the road.
Roger | 1:02 p.m. June 29, 2008
Would it help the players to paint our goal red, blue and gold? Perhaps put some blinking lights on it? Or maybe Checketts can stop being so cheap and start putting some real money into the team to attract some quality players. Most who play on the team would be third-rate players if they stayed in their own countries and played.
Neal | 1:05 p.m. June 29, 2008
I have a question for the RSL fans. Will that point we scored for the other team count toward RSL's cumulative total for purposes of the playoffs?
Carl | 1:14 p.m. June 29, 2008
Roger: Checketts is not cheap. I heard he bought a used school bus from the Davis County School District to transport the team to and from their games -- free of charge to the players! (Now they won't have to get to away games on their own). Further, now that summer is here, he has even promised to install air conditioning.

Anyway, two guys were cut last week from Malawi's national team, and I've heard through the grape vine that Checketts has his eye on them for next season. Wait and see, he'll snatch them up as soon as he gets back with the team and their new bus. Go RSL!!!!!
TO UTEFAN | 3:41 p.m. June 29, 2008
Why do you and every hater here (Boggs, Leonard) keep bashing RSL. Go read a throwball article. I do not like coming on here everyday seeing a message by Utefan berating my favorite team. GO RSL. GO soccer.
Bill | 4:59 p.m. June 29, 2008
"Why do you and every hater here . . . . keep bashing RSL"? Answer: Just read the headlines.
Anonymous | 5:23 p.m. June 29, 2008
the real question is why is it worth the time for "haters" to keep posting over and over and over???

Cougar fan | 6:25 p.m. June 29, 2008
We have more fans at one home game at Lavell Edwards Stadium, than RSL gets in one year at Rice Eccles.
Sporting of Lisbon | 7:29 p.m. June 29, 2008
RSL didn't play bad. We were unlucky with the owngoal in the 89 minute, it happens to the best teams in the world (Liverpool this year in the CL game agaisnt Chelsea). We will win next game. To all you RSL fans remember the MLS is a very balanced league where there aren't housepowers that will most likely win the league every year like it happens in Europe(Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Milan, Inter and Juventus in Italy, etc). Sometimes the MLS looks like some of the European second division leagues where at the beginning of the season every team can be promoted or relegated. This makes the MLS a hard and unpredictable league to win, which in my opinion is great to watch.
Sporting of Lisbon | 7:42 p.m. June 29, 2008
Cougar fan. Check your numbers, BYU home games have an average of 60,000 per game. Real Salt Lake almost 20,000 per game with 16 home games per season. So 16 x 20,000 is, let me guess 320,000 per season. I love the Cougars and graduated from BYU, I just hope you didn't graduated from BYU because you would have failed in College Algebra. Stop bashing soccer.

Can I get my tax money back?
Re: Sporting Lisbon | 9:42 p.m. June 29, 2008
BYU plays 6 home games a season averaging 60,000 per game. 6 x 60,000= 360,000+. It is probably more since BYU sold out every game last season which is more than 64,000 per game. Besides RSL doesn't get 20,000 to a game. They're lucky to get 2,000.
Fred | 10:35 p.m. June 29, 2008
No, you can't get your tax money back. In fact, you will soon be asked to pay more. The players need new glasses.
REAL fan | 10:51 p.m. June 29, 2008
RSL has shown it can compete with any team (and win) in MLS thanks to a solid organized defense and a hard working midfield. Unfortunately, with limited scoring ability, no matter how well the defense and midfield play it is easy to lose to anyone, since even the best teams give up goals at times. RSL has only allowed 3 goals in their last 6 matches. In a league that is supposidly set up to make every team relatively equal (accept perhaps the major market clubs such as LA, New York, Chicago, and DC) you're not going to do any better than that. Give RSL a consistent goal scorer and a creative wide player and they will be along side the best teams in the league. Even without those players they are stll fun to watch and for the most part play attractive entertaining soccer. Anyone who has played the game at a fairly high level can appreciate that Kreis is doing a good job with the players he has. Fans that are overly critical undoubtedly don't grasp the skill and fitness level of professional players who they compare in their own shallow minds to the local youth teams.
Throwball? | 11:03 p.m. June 29, 2008
PLEASE stop using the term 'throwball'. I can only assume you are referring to the American sport of football, but it just comes off as Euro-snobbery. I realize you may call soccer 'football' in whatever part of the planet you immigrated from. But I doubt most Americans would be so rude as to go to another country and publicly ridicule its most popular sport by calling it something so ridiculous and annoying.
Juice Box Guy | 11:35 p.m. June 29, 2008
OK, Its official. I will no longer respond to these "trolls" that keep bashing RSL. I suggest other fans like me just ignore them. They are the same people week after week. (Are you listening Utefan?)

I will say this. RSL picked a great game to flush down the toilet because everyone in the Western Conference lost or tied. Dallas tied Houston on Thursday and Chivas and San Jose tied and LA and Colorado lost. I am more disappointed that we did not get at least a tie to end our problems on the road. Good thing is that we have Houston on Thursday. Cant wait!
Ryan | 9:09 a.m. June 30, 2008
Ha! No, your tax money is OURS! Checketts will personally be coming to your house to collect your first-born child, as well! BWAHAHAHA!

ALL YOUR TAX DOLLARS ARE BELONG TO US.
to throwball? | 9:41 a.m. June 30, 2008
Right, Americans would never ridicule anything they didn't invent.
That has to be the stupidest thing I've ever read.

The reference to throwball is backlash on Americans' ridicule of soccer/football/futbol. My people have been in America since 1600, I'm not an immigrant but that comment is offensive.

Why go to some other country to deride their sports? it's so much easier to do at home.

Go soccer! Go RSL! Go intelligence! and Go USA!

Throwball | 10:05 a.m. June 30, 2008
Actually, throwball makes a lot more sense than football for that game you play with all the pads and breaks. Play for 10 seconds, rest for 30, oooo what fun and suspense.
Re: Throwball | 10:24 a.m. June 30, 2008
American Football fans: What are you so bent about? Your team is at the top of the food chain. Your sport gets all the respect and coverage you could ever dream of having. So shut up!

Yes, how strange, indeed, to want to call a sport by a name that accurately describes what it is all about... Considering the ball gets kicked once at the beginning of each half, and only once more each time a team scores or punts (assuming they do either).

I also like to call it "pointyball".
Ultimate Rsl fan | 11:14 a.m. June 30, 2008
I am a huge soccer fan and footballfan. There is no need to bash any sport. Let people who enjoy their sports, enjoy them without the nuances of Utefan, etc... RSL lost, so what! They are still a much better team than ever before. Lets get a win this week. I feel for RSL. It is hard to adjust from turf to grass so frequently. Once RSL plays in their new stadium and adjusts to one surface, watch their road success improve. Keep moving forward RSL, the true fans understand that you will not win all of the time, and that slumps happen. The Utah Jazz lost to all of the worst teams in the NBA during the season, yet they were one of the best teams.
Throwball? | 11:24 a.m. June 30, 2008
Your pointy point would be valid if there were a National Throwball League, or a Pro Throwball Hall of Fame. But until that happens your comments are just as insulting to those of us that play & enjoy the game. By the way, it's Major League SOCCER, not football.
throwball | 12:07 p.m. June 30, 2008
if your a throwball fan, go blog somewhere else. RSL fans are done listing to your drivel. Go away. Go post somewhere else.

Throwball is terrible. It may be popular here, but nowhere else.

Its football everywhere! Down with throwball!
Deployed | 12:38 p.m. June 30, 2008
I can't believe it. RSL gave up a goal, again, in the final 10 minutes. Not only that, we scored it. Unbelievable!?!

Believe it or not but I was walking through the streets of Bogota, Colombia (we're still fighting the war on drugs) and saw a girl wearing an RSL sweatshirt! Of all the teams int he US it was her favorite and after Millionarios was her favorite in the world.

All the soccer haters see the writing on the wall. They feel threatened by the growing popularity of soccer in America. Why else would they take the time to read and comment on articles they don't like. I don't waste my time reading about the NFL, let alone commenting about it.

GO RSL!
To Cougar Fan | 12:54 p.m. June 30, 2008
2,000 a game? You must be kidding. Go check the RSL and the MLS websites for average attendances. For your information we had 25,751 against the LA Galaxy. It's sad that you are a BYU fan like myself and you come here to bash soccer and RSL fans. If you don't like soccer go post on BYU football forums. Also when you present your case against RSL make sure to back your comments with correct data.
Blame Rimando | 1:48 p.m. June 30, 2008
I say that partial blame should go to Rimando on that own goal. If you watch the replay, the ball is flicked by Beltran (who i also blame for the goal along with cuttler) at the SIX!!! Where is Rimando? on his line!!!? which, ok is fine, if you arent going to come out, stay on the line good. HOWEVER, where does the ball end up going into the net? RIGHT ABOVE RIMANDO!!! where is he? this guy is too short to be our keeper, i believe he has lost that spot and Seitz should get the start on thursday. I mean you cant say Seitz doesnt deserve it, anyone who saw the cup game against SJ in the rain knows that kid has the talent. Not only that though, he got called up for national team duty!
Kreis, please, bench the midget Rimando and put in Seitz
CMcAfee | 3:31 p.m. June 30, 2008
Too bad about the goal. Beltran had a pretty decent game until that point, but I agree with a lot of your that the fault should be laid at Cutler's feet more than Tony's.
You know it is bad when your hear the other team's commentors talk about Yura's complete lack of passing. Why would a coach put up with a forward that never passes?

Are you American football fans really getting upset about your sport being called throwball? Wow. I guess all those pads have made your skin pretty thin. Go look up the history of the word "football"; many other sports, including soccer, used the name before your sport was born. Throwball makes sense, and I can't see that it is degrading in any way. A much more accurate name for American football would be TV commercial ball, where play stops every few seconds for a potential commercial break.
Re: CMcAfee | 3:37 p.m. June 30, 2008
ha ha, i love it... TV commercial ball.
how about we add
oxygen needed for fat man ball
8 seconds of action 1 min of waiting ball
any others?
(ps, i love getting under the skin of THROWBALL lovers if you couldnt tell)
utefan | 4:02 p.m. June 30, 2008
Hi everybody. It's me, Utefan. I just want you all to know that I've had an experience in my life today that made me realize how stupid I've been. I think I really do like soccer and I am just angry at myself. I now realize that none of my taxes are going to the stadium and it's going to be a great place to go and watch my first game. I hope everybody forgives me. See you there.
The loss... | 4:26 p.m. June 30, 2008
...yes we lost...it sucks, but it isnt the end of the world. Still have plenty of games to solidify our position into the playoffs.

Moving forward...and onto Thursday's game.
Utefan | 4:45 p.m. June 30, 2008
Don't impersonate me, I would never say an idiotic thing like that. I don't like RSL I wish they would fold. As well, it is not throwball, it is football. All you sock her fans should be smart enough to know that.
To utefan | 7:51 p.m. June 30, 2008
LOL, that was a great idea utefan. I hope the real Utefan is now converted to the best world sport. We know he loves RSL, he's just not humble enough to admit it right? He makes comments on RSL news every day. Congrats Utefan and welcome to RSL, see ya at the new stadium.
Throw-Up! | 10:37 a.m. July 1, 2008
It's exactly this kind of irritating snobbery that causes most mainstream U.S. sports fans to be turned off by soccer. The terminology & rules are strange and many don't enjoy the idea of games (matches) ending in a draw. Yet, instead of educating or accepting, you bash and ridicule. That's why it's a niche sport here and will likely always remain so. Most Real Salt Lake bloggers come off as kids obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons or Star Trek, gathering together in basements & conventions to impress each other with code words and to hurl insults at the jocks and popular kids who will never understand. Oh well, may the Force be with you.
Your kids play soccer | 10:59 a.m. July 1, 2008
re: throw up. Soccer is not a niche sport like say Lacross. I've never played Lacross. I've never seen a Lacross game. My kids have never played Lacross. I grew up playing soccer, football, and basketball. Why? Because they are all incredibly fun to play. I still play soccer every Saturday at 42 years of age (along with 20-30 other players). I'm not from Europe or Latin America. My kids play soccer, your kids play soccer. It's just a fun sport. Soccer will eventually be a big time spectator sport in the US. It's just part of our culture now. And that's ok. We actually have room for more than 3 major sports in this country.

Some people don't like baseball (myself included), but its ok with me that 70 milliion fans go to MLB games each year. Really, I'm fine with it even though I hate baseball. It's ok.
Hello Throw-up | 12:52 p.m. July 1, 2008
Your description is so close. (Not!!!). First of all, you must be either a high school kid who cares about popularity, which gets you nowhere in life, or you still think you are in high school. What is wrong with people that like Star Wars or any of that wierd stuff? People like you who think you are popular are actually disliked (to be nice) the most. By the way, I don't like any of those things us RSL/Soccer fans supposedly like. I played several main sports in high school and was considered a jock, yet I think soccer is the best sport. It is people like you that make a bad image for the rest of us so called "jocks and popular kids." Get over yourself and grow up.
i don't get it | 2:12 p.m. July 1, 2008
What did you mean "It's exactly this kind of irritating snobbery that causes most mainstream U.S. sports fans to be turned off by soccer. The terminology & rules are strange and many don't enjoy the idea of games (matches) ending in a draw."

We are snobs because so many "haters" love to post here in the RSL blog. We blog here about soccer and RSL, not there. So come here and read about soccer and see the negative things written. Not much for snobbery. THe rules are strange? Wow! I would have to think that all sports had different rules or all sports would be the same. The rules in soccer, err World Football, not American Throwball, are very simple, much more so that.. say Throwball.

Ending in a draw actually makes sense if you stop to think about it. Both teams were equal and no team deserved a win. I see many instances where is should be included in the big 3 sports here. triple overtime? please! bore me to death.

A win is 3 points, a tie is 1 point, and a loss is no points. The league winner as the most points. its that simple!
Utefan | 6:02 p.m. July 1, 2008
There hasn't been a RSL article in two days, which means they've folded or nothing is going on with them. I hope it is the first one.

You do love real Football Utefan. You make comments on RSL news everyday, why are you so prideful? Be humble and recognize that Football is the best sport. Be a man and forget Throwball, it will lead you to destruction and sadness. You know the poor utes Throwball team will never win anything. Your future is bright with RSL.
utefan | 9:34 p.m. July 1, 2008
Guys, I have been pondering and just want to say that I know that Football(soccer) is the best sport. I also know that my poor ute throwball team has been the cause of my lack of vision about world sports. I hope you can forgive me. I will be a RSL fan starting today.
