It's a great honor to go to the Pistons. I hope you get to play.
BYU fan | 10:59 a.m. June 27, 2008
I am a BYU fan that said Trent will never play in an NBA ball game; not that he wouldn't get drafted. And so what? Declaring for the NBA draft, working out for NBA clubs is actually a great way to set yourself up for a good euro deal. No shame in making money to play b-ball, wherever you can do it. I know must of us are working a lot harder for a lot less money...

But somebody has to stop Harmon. Plaisted's decision "finally paid off?" Not yet, it didn't. As a diehard Cougar fan, I find mischaracterizations like that to be embarassing.
Anybody actuall pay attention? | 10:59 a.m. June 27, 2008
>Araujo was a 1st rounder and didn't cut it.

Anybody who pays any attention at all to pro sports, and has even a tiny bit of intelligence, knows that even most 1st rounders don't end up being stars. There are plenty of players that were hyped by the national media that are now playing in Europe, and plenty of no-name picks that ended up having long, steady, successful careers. Most draftees end up doing something else a few years later.

wow, you guys (and girls) are vicious. Wrong side of the bed today???????????? I think we should leave his wife out of this don't you. She made a mistake so how long are we going to go after her? Enough already.
Dissapointed | 11:07 a.m. June 27, 2008
I'm a cougarfan, and think Plaisted was lucky to get drafted at all. I don't understand why he would want to leave school early to enter a draft already flooded with underclassmen, especially when he is not quite NBA ready.
I hope he is not a total bust. I wish him well, although I wish he would have stuck around for another year. We could use him (but the Pistons can't and won't).
MichiganCougar | 11:25 a.m. June 27, 2008
A MICHIGAN COUGAR I AM AND WHEN WATCHING THE NEWS AND SPORTS LAST NIGHT AND HEARD TRENT'S NAME MENTIONED I SCREAMED YES DISTRUBING MY WIFE.

JOE DUMARS IS A GREAT GM FOR THE PISTONS AND IF THERE IS A TEAM THAT CAN TURN TRENT INTO THE TYPE OF NBA PLAYER WE ALL HOPE HE CAN BE IT IS THE PISTONS AND JOE "D". GO TRENT GOOOOOOOOOOOO PISTONS.

A COUGAR ON THE PISTONS. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
Uh..Dear Basketkase.. | 11:28 a.m. June 27, 2008
You are a "realist"????????

Do you even KNOW what that means?

You accuse and joke about Trent's wife abusing alcohol and drugs by referencing drugs over seas?

When a "realist" would say, Trent's wife was driving while on a "legal" perscription, and if affected her badly. A realist would say she should have been a little more careful at following the drug warnings.

You joke with statements that actually could get you in court.

You're NOT a BYU-hater? What you are is a liar.

You think pursuing a career in the NBA is a "foolish dream"?

I'm certain if you revealed yourself...we'd all see that you have chosen to pursue some awesome dream. Probably making one hel-uva life for yourself!

I'd place my money that you work in some cubicle or a gas station, pumping gas. You might drive a 12 year old car. Nice dream.

By the way, "Basketkase" was a good choice of names. It fits.

Good luck Trent. You will need it, but hey, don't we all.
Hey, Good Luck.... | 11:35 a.m. June 27, 2008
Let's see...Travis Hansen...makes tons more money that you. He is building wonderful orphanges to help little children.

Shawn Bradley...though no superstar, lasted quite a few years in the NBA and made some great money. I hear he is a great father and husband.

Mike Smith...probably doing pretty well. I don't know.

Hoffa...giving it a shot...doing something he enjoys.

Amazing how so many wish ill-luck and no blessings on their brothers/sisters. I believe we'll be judged as we judge. Maybe the Lord will rip all you "nay-sayers" when you stand before him. What effort did you put behind your talents in life?

Most of us will be begging for mercy.

God bless those who go out and "DO" and not just gripe and moan. 90% of you writers are pathetic.
Europe in 2008-09 | 11:43 a.m. June 27, 2008
The reason the pistons traded their 1st round pick is because they already have their roster for next season, a first round pick is guaranteed money, 2nd round picks aren't. So they traded for 2 second round picks, because they don't intend on signing them, they already have their team for next season. The second round is to store future players in most cases, or to put someone in the D-League to see if they pan out.
to:yewtsRfunny | 11:46 a.m. June 27, 2008
Bogut is a legitimate big man who gives milwakee consistent numbers will he be hall of fame no would we love him on th eJazz yes. Alex smith is not a bust. He has no O-line, nobody to throw to and is on his third offensive coordinator in as may years factors he has no control over. (ironicaly these are the same factors O-line especialy that cut our beloved steve Youngs career short by about 3 years. As for plaisted, he is a decent ball player, who would have been wise to stay one more year and work on his weak points and then try the draft. That said it is his life and his choice.
Just the Facts | 11:47 a.m. June 27, 2008
While Plaisted did get drafted, there is no lock on him making the Pistons. However, he has as good as shot as any 2nd rounder in the draft to make the team.

RE: Reality Check

You are really going to tell the posters in here that BYU has churned out more NBA talent than the U of U over the years?

Even in lean years Utah basketball has had players go to the NBA.

Besides Mel Hutchins and Danny Ainge-- there are no Cougars that have made an impact in the NBA. Kresimir Cosic was the best the school ever produced but he never played in the NBA. Shawn Bradley was one of the most overhyped and under performing players ever to play in the NBA.

While some Utah fans will defer to BYU on football matters, the Utes have always had a better basketball program and tradition (including NBA players) between the two schools. This has been stated by The Sporting News and other publications.
KEWGSSUCK | 11:48 a.m. June 27, 2008
JC carrol would not be pucking O.J. and complaining about altitude during an NBA workout. In fact JC could run circles around Trent. the guy is the enegizer bunny. I predict he actually makes an NBA roster befor Trent!! He is way more disciplined and a better athlete!!

Good luck to both though!!
2nd rounder | 12:09 p.m. June 27, 2008
Yep, just like I said, Trent is 2nd round material... hopefully he makes the Piston's roster and plays in the D League for a year... and they we'll see.

If he can improve his mid range jumper and his free throws, he might be a bench warmer in the NBA - which is a pretty dang good living.

Good luck Trent - you'll need it.
Orange Juice | 12:19 p.m. June 27, 2008
Good on ya Trent. He may not make the Piston's team (OK, let's be realistic...he likely won't)...or even their NBADL affiliate, but I'm sure he'll make an admirable living for his family somewhere playing basketball. I hear the orange juice stays down better in Europe anyways...

You Ute fans all sound like the LA Faker fans last week who were poking their chests out claiming "Fakers can still take it in 9" after the Celtics pelted them in game 6!

Plaisted goes and puts himself in a situation to support his family financially and the Ute fans pile on him like flies at R.E.S...I mean at an outhouse. You don't seem to have much problem with Andrew Bogut drawing #1 draft money for average, at best, performance or Alex Smith pretty much embarrassing the whole Ute nation...They're both bigger disappointments than Trent will be...in proper context. Let Trent go get his money and live the live of luxury in Europe. He's not hurting you any.
MADRYBEG | 12:21 p.m. June 27, 2008
I admit that I am a Utes fan and I have not red all of the blogs to this point, but I will assume there are a lot of people blasting Plaisted. This is a good team for him to go to. The Pistons have shown that they can be patient with young players. I hope this works out for Trent, but like everyone else I feel he should have stayed another year. The NBA should not be a time to develop that should be taken care of prior to the NBA.
Not so foolish dream | 12:24 p.m. June 27, 2008
Trent will be enjoying the benefits of a professional basketball career, either in the NBA or Europe, while mocking people like Basketkase toil away stocking shelves and flipping burgers and wondering how such an "untalented" player could be making soooo much money.

Enjoy the last laugh Trent for the guts to pursue your dream!
Dreams | 12:31 p.m. June 27, 2008
I have a friend whose own father-in-law told him to drop his foolish dream of playing professional baseball and get a real job.

He stuck it out, playing winter ball in Puerto Rico and other places and finally made it onto a Major League team.

He played 11 seasons of Major League Baseball and was named an all-star for one season with the Cubs.

He's now the head baseball coach at BYU.

Don't give up on your dream, Trent, no matter what the clueless naysayers may say.
re yewts are funny | 12:38 p.m. June 27, 2008
boy that was a bold prediction. Two professional athletes will retire with more money than posters on the desnews sports blogs? Wow. here's my prediction, tomorrow will be Saturday!
JIMI | 12:38 p.m. June 27, 2008
BYU haveing more NBA players from the past ? are you kiding me? man i hope you are. cause thats a joke.after the 97 seasen UTAH had more draft picks than BYU ever had in its history lol. look it up!!!!!!!!!!
I Can't Believe This!! | 1:06 p.m. June 27, 2008
I love to see my Cougs beat the U but I also like to see the U represent the state and the conference well and I like to see former U athletes do well. Get real Cougs - I would love to have had Alex Smith, Bogut, the Alex Jensen, Britton Johnson, JC Carrol, etc wear Cougar blue. Maybe I'm in the minority but I love the Cougar-Ute rivalry and love to see BYU do well but also appreciate the U (and USU) and the many good kids they bring in and occassionally send into the pros. I truly don't get it when rooting for your team translates into literal hatred for the kids who play on the rival team. There is some serious psychological issues going on when rooting for your team takes you to that extreme. Congrats Trent - yeah he may only play a year and then go overseas but that actually gives him the chance to make lots more money than a second round 12th man career does. Oh what a terrible existence players like Travis Hansen, Hoffa and likely TP must have.
Kennewick? | 1:09 p.m. June 27, 2008
Um, who in the NBA played for BYU?
ROFLOL | 1:23 p.m. June 27, 2008
This is pretty hilarious, all the BYU haters who said Trent wouldn't even get drafted now having to eat their words and come back with posts like "we never said he wouldn't get drafted, we said he'd never play in the NBA" yadda yadda yadda. Way to go haters, always keep moving the target just like I'm sure you do at your Burger King jobs with all the lame excuses you give your bosses.

And to "Europe in 2009-09", your post shows you either don't know much about the sport or are simply also a BYU hater. You make it sound like it's guaranteed Trent will not make the Pistons. Gee you must be right because no 2nd rounder has EVER made an NBA team (har). In fact, many have. You say their team is "set" for next year. Not necessarily. After Trent plays in their Summer league they may decide they like him better than one of their other guys. Ever heard of a little thing called a trade? That's how they'd make room for him. Trade a guy under contract to another team for a future draft pick or whatever.
To: A Ute fan | 1:37 p.m. June 27, 2008
It's great to see a Ute cheer when a Cougar does well. I'm a Cougar and root for the Utes (unless they are playing us). Thanks for being a sportsman.
Anonymous | 1:40 p.m. June 27, 2008
I don't blame Plaisted for trying to make the NBA. I blame him for leaving college early. The NBA will be there next year, and maybe by then he would have added a 2nd move. He'll have a good career in Europe and that's cool, but he will regret missing that Sr. year in college when he would have been playing games that mattered. As far as all you cougar fans ripping on the utes basketball program.. well yeah we hired a lame coach and it hurt us. At least we fired him fast instead of letting him run the program totally into the ground like Roger Reid. Also, you keep mentioning how Luke Neville didn't get drafted. He wasn't in the draft. He's still at the U and is still much better than Plaisted. Johnny Bryant did not get drafted so we must suck. You sure got us there. Plaisted is good enough to get drafted, but compared to active NBA players he really does suck pretty bad. Just admit it.
Utefan | 1:45 p.m. June 27, 2008
Trent-have fun playing in europe brush up on your italian, fench, german, etc. Should have stayed in school.
. | 1:59 p.m. June 27, 2008
Wait...did he really call the Detroit Piston's classy?
Zoobie 56 | 1:59 p.m. June 27, 2008
I wish Plaisted the best and congratulate him on being taken by the Pistons. I think if there were guarantees for good guys he'd be in the NBA for a long time. Now he has his work cut out for him to make the team and it won't be easy. Carroll not being drafted shows that big men have an easier route to make the NBA than do most guards. Good luck to you Plaisted. Thanks for your efforts for BYU basketball.
TRUE Byu | 2:02 p.m. June 27, 2008
The comments about the money Trent will be making are cracking me up! He'll make a D-league paycheck at best, which is a heck of alot less than someone that graduated in economics and leaves Utah for real job in the real world. As far as being drafted in the middle 2nd round, it was so important it was done during the commercials and a trade was made by the time it came back on air. And most importantlly, immediatelly after the JAZZ, SPURS and Celtics choice. Did anyone catch all those teams saying they wanted a player that was a "team player"..Trent is not. The whole deal was just that...a trade deal. You're right about the 14 under contract players for Detroit. Trent being drafted = BIG YAWN...
CO Coug | 2:21 p.m. June 27, 2008
Congrats Trent, you have a lot of hard work ahead of you to make the team and play in the NBA. To which I wish you well and hope it works out for you.

Now for all of you posers who are criticising and ripping on this kid and his family, how many of you have actually made a basketball team? Yeah that's what I thought.......I doubt any of you could have made your junior high team. The kid had a great run at BYU and actually got drafted into the NBA in the second round, how many of us can say that? Give him a little credit and quit being so negative all the time.
Paul Silas | 2:47 p.m. June 27, 2008
Congrats to Trent. He's going to get 15 minutes a game easy next year in backing up Sheed. All he has to do is compete for every rebound and get a few clean up baskets around the rim. If he can do that, he'll be in this league 10-12 years.
to:jimi | 3:00 p.m. June 27, 2008
i really appreciate your comment on how the yewts have had more nba draft picks after the '97 season then your superior rival (see directors cup standings if it isn't already obvious). All that proves to me is how far your schools only relevant sport has fallen since then. I would even dare say that your basketball team has the pulse of a prehistoric caveman! As far as football, I know how it feels when your mvp is your kicker, Payne was incredible but he was our KICKER!!! That is a bad sign for a football team. Anyway, have fun watching your bra strap yewt sakoda punting the ball away. It all you have to look forward to! VIVA BRONCO Y ROSE!!!! Que WHIT SE QUEMA
USU Fan | 3:07 p.m. June 27, 2008
Congrats to you Trent. I wish you the best and hope you have a nice career in the NBA.

What's with all the bitter and derogatory banter?! Can't we hope for good things to happen to other people? It's one thing to state an opinion about how you think they'll do, it's another thing to just be mean. Grow up people!
Basketkase | 3:28 p.m. June 27, 2008
Let's define "reality" (and this came from dictionary.com): a person who tends to view or represent things as they really are.

to the moron above, that was fairly obvious. Here's the truth. Trent will never play a minute in a regular season NBA game. That's reality.

I love it. According to the guy above, my comments on here will "get me in court." Please explain how, and I'll give you the salary from my job pumping gas. Or maybe I'll give you my 12-year-old car.

Speaking of cars, driving while under the influence of legal drugs can still be illegal. I thought a smart guy like you would know that. Keep cheering on your lame Cougars. Remember Steve Cleveland's comb-over, and the tattoo Travis Hansen tried to get removed, unsuccessfully. Ha ha. I could go all day with this stuff. It's almost too easy. But I'd better be quiet. I'd hate to be sued or arrested for expressing my views in an open forum. If you disagree with me, then you are wrong. Deal with that reality.
Sorry Trent | 3:32 p.m. June 27, 2008
Worst possible place to get drafted to.

Amir Johnson
Rasheed Wallace
Jason Maxiell
Antonio Mcdyess
Walter Sharpe

You have slim to no chance of making this team. Good luck in europe.
Ute Man | 3:59 p.m. June 27, 2008
He was a 2nd round pick. That doesnt guarantee him a spot on a team. Many 2nd rounders never make a roster so dont start yappin just yet. As for the first post about BYU's great tradition of sending players to the NBA... Did you see the article yesterday on ESPN of the top 25 biggest 1st round draft busts of all time? 3 Cougars made the list. Michael Smith, Shawn Bradley, and Hoffa... GREAT tradition. Although I wish that Hoffa was still playin for the Jazz, I dont think he is that bad.
Just Me | 4:38 p.m. June 27, 2008
well "IF" he gets signed.
Good Luck | 4:40 p.m. June 27, 2008
Actually I don't think he does, I do very well for myself. I've done a lot with my talents. All I did was present the facts. I hate all of the Orphans in the world. I'm sorry Plaistead isn't going to be a household name in the NBA, I didn't really understand the comment "maybe the Lord will rip all you nay sayers". I think he has better things to do than worry about if people think BYU doesn't have a good basketball reputation, but thats just me. I'll leave another message on DesNews when it reports he was cut from the Pistons roster in October.
Tarheel Ute | 4:43 p.m. June 27, 2008
It is an accomplishment to be drafted at all in the NBA - period. The best ball players in the world begin their careers dreaming of playing in the NBA, only one in a million get drafted. He got drafted, making him one of the select few to at least have a chance at the next level.

Should he have stayed? BYU would probably not have done much better than last year with him on the team this year, and he risked injury if he did. 50/50 in my book.

I don't fault his decision, considering how many seniors did not get drafted.

Will he make the team? Time will tell - I think yes; however Ute fans more so that Detroit fans are or will be happy with his decision.
Hey Ewyets!!! | 5:16 p.m. June 27, 2008
Don't you get tired of eating your words?

What would happen if you quit hating on BYU, and just lived you lives???

You should have a little chihuahua for your mascot, rather than that weird bird.

Bark, Bark little ewyets...

You haven't had a thing to strut about for the two years I've lived in Utah.
One player | 5:37 p.m. June 27, 2008
Sometimes i wounder about harmon. He tries to compare BYU's draft status with that of UNLV's. What a joke!!! Ya most of those fourty something draft picks out of UNLV were lottery picks that had good NBA careers. ONE BYU player has had a successful NBA career!! The 91 draft had more quality UNLV players than the entire history of BYUs basketball program. BYU does not produce NBA quality players, never has (minus ainge) and never will. And nothing against trent but he will be lucky to spend more than two years in the NBA. And whats the deal with bashing Giddens? Typical BYU fan, when someone is better than you question their character. That's why people hate BYU, it's your self rightous additude
Anonymous | 6:31 p.m. June 27, 2008
basketkase is the reason plaistead left.

Would you subject your wife that stuff?
Apples and Oranges | 6:33 p.m. June 27, 2008
Why are Couger fans comparing TP to bloggers,(he'll make more money then you do, yada, yada) do they really think he is that bad. Compare him to Bogut or maybe a NBA center he may come up against if he makes the team.

Unfortunately, they know as well as we know, he can't compare to NBA centers or Bogut. He is not good enough, so what! if he makes money. We have only said he is not good enough to make it in the NBA. I have plenty friends playing in Europe and a players/coach in europe, not a big deal, especially at 6'11".

If you are going to say he is good enough for the NBA, then stick to it. Don't compromise by your ad hominum arguments.
Re: Hey Utes | 6:48 p.m. June 27, 2008
Ignorant Zoob. I thought BYU fans were supposed to be above the Utes.
Bracket Buster Bob | 7:06 p.m. June 27, 2008
There is no guarantied contract or salary for a second round player, he must make the team. If he makes the team, the NBA minimum salary for a first year player is around $400,000. If they sign TP he would get that even if he is sent to the D league.
Dear Utes | 8:59 p.m. June 27, 2008
I'm actually quite concerned about you. Why does everything have to be about you? This is about a BYU player who had something happen to him that he has probably dreamed about for a long time? Why do you have to try to spoil it for him? He won't play another game against the Utes. He won't beat you again. I hope that Trent has a great career - but I won't stake my value as a human being on it. Why do you take the time to post?

You know, ten years ago when Utah was in the NCAA final, people at BYU wanted Utah to win. We were happy for you, even when we had a lousy year. Even when we knew that we would hear about it until the end of time. Even if it would make recruiting harder for us.

Trent did well in college, and maybe things will work out for him in the NBA. But it shows a pathological mind to criticize him at this point. It's not normal. Everything doesn't have to be about you. Let it go, let it go.
$400,000.00 | 9:01 p.m. June 27, 2008
Thanks Bob. There have been so many ignorant comments here. The FACT is that if TP makes the NBA OR an overseas team he will likely make around $400,000 and possibly much more on a high profile overseas team. I suppose if things really go bad and he is playing in Korea or the middle east he may be more in the $200,000 range. But how many here can state that their worst case scenarios upon graduation was making $200,000 with a more likely salary of around $400,000 or more? It's odd what we choose to criticize.
Travis Hansen | 9:18 p.m. June 27, 2008
Travis Hansen went to Europe because he wanted to. You would know that if you didn't want to HATE all of the time. Yeah he was never going to start but he could have chilled as a back up for a long time. But he is loving the big bucks he is getting in Europe.
2nd Round Means Nothing | 10:20 p.m. June 27, 2008
Being drafted in the 2nd round means nothing. There is a chance he doesn't make the team. Even if he makes the team, where will the minutes come? There are four good big men already there. I see Developmental League in the future. Turkey or Russia will be calling soon.
Why? | 10:45 p.m. June 27, 2008
Why is it that some people who never accomplished anything significant in their lives are always the first to tell others they can't succeed either? Good advice to anyone who is trying to succeed in anything-never, never listen to failures!! Go talk to successful people! Successful people will look at you and tell you, "ofcourse you can, if you want it badly enough and are willing to work hard enough." Anyone want to guess which one of the two Trent is probably listening too?
Because: | 12:08 a.m. June 28, 2008
BYU bloggers have consistently been on this sight the last year saying how great TP and Cummard is: That they are first round draft choices, yada, yada, ... the next this, the next that. BYU this and BYU that

Its great that he is following his dream, but to critique a player and say he is not NBA ready is not saying he is a bad guy or a bad basketball player. Its saying he is not NBA material. It has nothing to do with destroying anyone's dream except for BYU bloggers.
