Picking at 23 is just down to luck. DeShawn was serviceable while in Utah, and we traded him for Giricek, who was also decent but never great. But that's eight seasons of solid minutes off the bench. And then to be used to get Korver is even better. DeShawn is one of O'Connor's better selections. That was a lot better choice than Raul Lopez, Kurt Snyder or Kris Humphries. And when it was time to move on, O'Connor made good moves to acquire first Giricek and then Korver. If you think about it, the Korver trade will be two first-round picks in the 20s for Korver. That's a great trade.
Approximately 50% of players picked in the second half of the draft are out of the league by the time their rookie contracts expire. So yeah, getting a starter at #23 is a success. Finding a roll player can be considered a success too.
If Stevenson was such a good pick, why didn't we take Michael Redd (who went mid-2nd round that year)? He's a 20ppg scorer that isn't a defensive star, but an All-Star caliber player.
Agree w/ Jimmy's Sneakers. We shouldn't expect a starter at #23. In fact, if one of the 3 picks turns out to be a solid backup, I'd consider it a successful draft.
If the Jazz keep their picks, I say roll the dice and draft off of potential. Maybe guys that slipped a bit due to poor workouts. Bring them all in and let them compete for a spot during the RMR and training camp.
Problem is there is just one roster spot available if the Jazz resign CJ. And any 1st rounder will have a guaranteed contract, unless the Jazz draft a Euro player and keep him overseas.
I'd like to see the Jazz either trade for a veteran or trade down and take guys like Ibaka and Kaun. Those two will be playing in Europe next year. Perfect for the Jazz until they get rid of some expiring contracts (Hart, Collins) and decide what to do with CJ.
This is a pivotal year for Miles. Jazz either sign him to a long-term deal, or he becomes DeShawn, Part Deux. He goes elsewhere to become a starter and the Jazz end up developing a player for another team.
Just let KOC make the decision and keep sloan as as far away as possible.
People like you forget that all the other teams in the league passed on Michael Redd too. If you could go back and redraft Michael Redd wouldn't even have been available at 23.
I think fans tend to look at their own teams warts/mistakes but don't always see those of other teams. The Jazz have drafted pretty well over the past few years.
Sure it was a good pick, he played and he is stilll playing. Redd was an awesome pick. Why complain being a Jazz Fan, the Stockton pick has been considered as the greatest steal of all time. Malone is up there too. It is unrealistic to expect to outpick 29 other teams. They can't give everybody a workout and some players improve their games throughout their NBA careers.
What we have is C.J. that doesn't want to come to the Jazz review, Hart that couldn't defend my sisiter or hit the ocean and Collins who just loves the bench money for not getting off his butt. Expendable all. The only real bright spot is that we have the Knicks First round pick in 2010 , and unless De' antoni pulls rabbits out of his hat we should get a lottery pick there.
At first I was scepticle of O'connor but I see him working some good trades. The Jazz has a good core of players so let them mesh and the newbies will just have to blend in. Getting rid of the other three won't damage the team and put us in bargaining position for another trade that can help.
Let O'Connor work some magic and clear the bench that is inept.
I remember that draft and studied it and all the reports.
And I remember michael redd really stood out to me.
why didn't he stand out the to the so-called jazz experts?
It seems every year there is a big steal in the second round, like a redd or manu or millsap.
If so few make it why not take chance late in first round on them.
The jazz have never shown courage in drafts or trades.
when push came to shove they always took who they thought was safest.
Hence, no championships, just the predictable winning season and the low "safe" draft choice to continue the these "gound hog day" seasons.
management keeps their job, miller sells tickets and t-shirts, and the jazz fans just suck it all and and keep wishin and hopin.
Hibbert - Nuff said.
If Hibbert is gone at 23, we should trade pick 23 in either a dump AK trade or for a 2009 first rounder. We should then trade Hart, Collins and both 2nd rounders to the Pacers for Jeff Foster or to the Nets for Trenton Hassell.
Go get a proven big (Foster )or proven perimeter defender (Hassell) to add to a Jazz team that might make one last gasp next sesaon before Okur and Boozer opt out or AK's contract destroys the team.
