Utah Jazz: BYU's Plaisted to work out for Jazz

I love the Jazz and I love BYU but when I look at what the Jazz need I don't see it in Trent Plaisted. For his size he is not a defensive presence and having limited post moves and no midrange game is not a recipe for success at the next level. I wish Trent all the luck in the world but I have to be honest when I say that I hope the Jazz don't just draft him for his in-state connection.

I agree with Blueintheface I don`t think Plaisted would help the Jazz. No sense on wasting a pick on him.
holding my breath | 3:49 p.m. June 23, 2008
I can't wait to see Trent play in the NBA....problem is there isn't enough lung capacity in provo to hold your breath until that happens.

good luck in Europe.

If Trent were serious about playing in the NBA, he should have stayed in school another year, worked like crazy on his free-throw shooting, polished his post moves, developed a mid-range jump shot, and vastly improved his defense.

If a team is willing to invest some time on Trent in the development league, he might eventually develop the skills to be successful in the NBA. In his present state, European ball is his likely destination.

Immersion in a new culture and making better money than he would at a regular job straight out of college, but a far cry from the NBA.

Good luck Trent!

I'm a BYU fan too, but Plaisted just doesn't have what it takes right now to be effective in the NBA. He's only got one move in the post and he can't play defense. This would be a total waste of a pick for the Jazz, especially seeing that all of the pre-draft camp notes have him labeled as underwhelming.
Really? | 4:07 p.m. June 23, 2008
Hello Ostertag 2.0. This guy is awful and would be a giant mistake as a draft pick
Jimmy's Sneakers | 4:13 p.m. June 23, 2008
Jimmy was waiting for an article like this. Jimmy thinks that Plaisted would be perfect for the Jazz. Jimmy hopes that they take him at #23.
BYUFan | 4:15 p.m. June 23, 2008
Ditto to BlueCoug....Trent should have stayed at BYU and developed more. However, I think he left because he WASN'T improving, and he had to catch his window of opportunity based on BYU's decent season this past year. I saw no improvement in him from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. If he really wants to try to play in the NBA...he had to go this year. Cummard will and would have greatly over shadowed him next year and he would have no shot at all as a pro.
Trent knows what he is doing | 4:21 p.m. June 23, 2008
Trent knows what he is doing. He knows that if he gets lucky enough he will land with an NBA team. If not he is not going to school and earning good money for a while in Europe. He knows that the money in the NBA would be perfect/lucky but who wouldn't try? Look at Araujo, cashed in and look where he is at now.
Good Luck | 4:35 p.m. June 23, 2008
Maybe he could play in Amsterdam, then his wife wouldn't get arrested for drugs anymore. Its win win, he gets payed to play basketball, and she doesn't have to worry about getting drug charges anymore.
Re: Really? | 4:38 p.m. June 23, 2008
How dare you make fun of Ostertag.
UteJazzman | 4:39 p.m. June 23, 2008
Its a crap shoot in the second round. I hate BYU and think Plaisted is overrated, but it doesnt mean he cant turn into a decent player someday. If there isnt a promising euro prospect when we pick in the 2nd rd we can draft him and tell him to go play in europe for a couple yrs. We still retain his rights and dont have to pay him.
Razor One | 4:42 p.m. June 23, 2008
Much as I'm a BYU fan, I can't see him getting drafted period, much less by the Jazz. He should've at least gotten a degree out the college deal; he's going to need it soon. Good luck Trent.
Jimmy | 4:49 p.m. June 23, 2008
Hey Jerry,
Reinforce the backboard. The brick hucker is on the court.
Right on | 4:48 p.m. June 23, 2008
Everyone knows he'll be in Europe next season, but to get payed to play basketball would be awesome. And everyone knows his wife is hoping he signs with a team in Amsterdam.
ha | 5:17 p.m. June 23, 2008
Ostertag with curly hair.
Coaching | 5:39 p.m. June 23, 2008
After the big start, Trent did not look like he got much better. Injured? Bored? Folded under pressure? Poor coaching? Unlucky?

Who knows?

Trent plaistead left because he didn't want his wife to be continued to be attacked by rude ute fans.
Zewbie | 6:01 p.m. June 23, 2008
Get real zewbie fans. Plaidsteed is way to slow and awkward to play in the NBA. He would get swatted everytime he tried to shoot.
Jazz win!! | 6:20 p.m. June 23, 2008
Jazz look at local guy. Good pr... good...

Give a raise to the publicity director.
sabrefan | 6:37 p.m. June 23, 2008
utah will probably take sean singletary with the 53rd pick according to Chad Ford of ESPN. would be a good pick
Vegas Ed | 6:59 p.m. June 23, 2008
Major Cougar fan here, but don't take him. Maybe with the 2nd round pick. Never get his shot off. Barely could in the MWC.
Complementary | 7:06 p.m. June 23, 2008
This invite for a workout is nothing more than public relations correctness. Jaycee Carroll was extended an invite so to be correct with Utah fans Trent got one also. Nothing more. He might have a hard time getting playing time overseas I believe. That is just not a dumping grounds for players not good enough to make NBA rosters. Good luck.
Gretzky | 7:54 p.m. June 23, 2008
Jimmy's Sneakers smell. i agree sadly with some of the comments about the family/spousal issues. we never found out about the reality of any drug problems and maybe just as well for BYU. Trent is not ready for the NBA. i am sure he will get drafted (hopefully 2nd round for his sake) then play one or two years in the developmental league and then either take his game to the next level or Europe. he had a lot of potential to still mature at BYU. sad we were not able to see the fruits of Rose's labor.
Re: Re: Really? | 8:57 p.m. June 23, 2008
How dare you acknowledge Ostertag! He was absolutely horrible!
I love the title of the article | 9:15 p.m. June 23, 2008
"BYU's Plaisted to work out for Jazz"

Wouldn't it have been cool if during his years at BYU Plaisted worked on his right hand, foul shots and footwork?

Geeze, if they want to waste a pick and an NBA salary on someone local to ride the pine and bring in a Utah connection, Draft Thomas Monson or Rocky Anderson.

Jimmy, get some new shoes because those sneakers are messing with your game.
Random Task | 9:29 p.m. June 23, 2008
Im sure Sarah Cummard threatened Mrs. Plaisted to make Trent enter the draft so Lee could be the #1 option on the team and raise his draft stock.
BledRed | 9:46 p.m. June 23, 2008
Even my Utes' Luke Nevill is better than Plaisted! He's the same kind of player as Araujo: slow, and limited offensively, but able to succeed in college because of his size. Best of luck to him, even though he is a Cougar, but I think he'll end up in the D-League like Lance Allred.
Rich | 10:11 p.m. June 23, 2008
I think Plaisted could help some teams, but I don't see that the Jazz need his strengths, which is speed for a big guy and good jumping ability for a 6'10" man. He's not a very good shooter and often throws up prayers even when he's inside. I don't think he's tough enough around the boards for the NBA game. Still, I suspect some team will take a chance on him, but I'm betting he'll be a one-and-done guy though he might last a couple of years.

On the other hand, if Hibbert lasts until the Jazz get to exercise their draft choice, I'll be surprised. That guy has tons of potential and a good attitude. I would love to give him a chance here.
Danny Roe | 10:13 p.m. June 23, 2008
We all seem to agree that trent is not that good of a pro prospect, and that the odds of him even making an NBA roster is not that great. I think anyone who watched more than five games throughout trent's career would agree that trent is just not an NBA player reagrdless of what team one might root for. So my question is who is projecting that this guy is getting drafted, even in the second round? Who advised this guy that he should leave school early? And does trent actually think he is good enough? YOU DON'T LEAVE SCHOOL EARLY TO PLAY IN THE D-LEAUGE
Red | 10:27 p.m. June 23, 2008
Plaisted will be an effective 10-15 min player for rebounding purposes. What do you expect for a second round pick? Nevil may have outplayed him in two games head to head, but Plaisted played much better against better competition. His out of conference numbers are as good as anyone's in the post.

The Jazz would be on crack if they select Play-stead from that loser school in the south.
Anonymous | 10:31 p.m. June 23, 2008
The Jazz aren't that dumb to take playstead.
Anonymous | 10:35 p.m. June 23, 2008
Jazz, please don't take another zoob. Why select those losers?
Jazz it up | 11:13 p.m. June 23, 2008
Trent should thank the jazz for letting him use their gym for a day of practice. We wouldn't want him to get out of shape for his new European team!
Anonymous | 11:14 p.m. June 23, 2008
UR right Anonymous about the Zoobies. Good thing the Jazz didn't draft Danny Ainge. We might have won a championship.
BYU Fan | 11:44 p.m. June 23, 2008
As a die hard fan who bleeds cougar blue I think Plaisted should have stayed one more year to improve his game. Oh and by the way losers don't win the regular season conference title two years in a row and they don't beat their arch rivals four straight times.
Ute Fan | 7:43 a.m. June 24, 2008
Jimmy Sneakers needs to get a life. To say Plaistead is a perfect fit for the Jazz is to say that the China wall doesn't exist.
RR | 9:31 a.m. June 24, 2008
One word for most of these posts: CLASSLESS! I'm so sick of reading these comments. People are so insecure with themselves they feel they have to consistently bash others. I'm ashamed at all fans who have to bash bash bash. It's not funny anymore, it's just sick. It's a sad day we live in where grown adults act like anomonous children picking on each other and know they'll never get caught. Quit with the wife bashing and BYU bashing. State your opinion rationally or don't post at all.
Re:RR | 9:55 a.m. June 24, 2008
Quit reading the comments if you don't like them and get off your pedestal. The reason for these message boards is Free Speech. Quit Crying! About the article, Plaistead isn't ready for the NBA, he is too slow and doesn't have the game for the NBA. He'll be playing pro over seas. To BYU fan, the Utes have won 16 NCAA tournament games since BYU last won one, so they might have beat the Utes in some of our down seasons lately, but we still have the superior program.
Stay in School | 10:55 a.m. June 24, 2008
Stay in school and develop your skills. You might actually stick in the NBA if you do. Otherwise say hello to Travis.
Re: Bluecoug | 11:31 a.m. June 24, 2008
"If Trent were serious about playing in the NBA, he should have stayed in school another year, worked like crazy on his free-throw shooting, polished his post moves, developed a mid-range jump shot, and vastly improved his defense."

Why do fans try to act authoritative on a subject they really know nothing about? Advice to you Bluecoug, when you're in a position to be drafted in the NBA, then you can write a three paragraph analysis on why players aren't ready for the NBA. Since you're not in such an enviable position: stick to opinion rather than absolutes.
Re: RR | 12:20 p.m. June 24, 2008
Someone get this person a hankie! I would adivse you to stay away from comment boards and sharp objects until your skin gets a little thicker.
Oatmeal | 3:16 p.m. June 24, 2008
This is such a boring topic. No one will be surprised at how Trent performs. He will be drafted in the second round, not by the Jazz and get about 5 rebounds and 6 fouls a game. I hope he does better.
