I'm not sold on hibbert. I do not believe that he is a best player avilable even at 23. I see him fitting in the draft at 44 with out question. one of the lopez brothers would be a better pick at 23. the kid from rider would be a better fit. and then there is the possibility of K. Rush thats right a guard. it make since because he would be a still at 23 and by far the best player available if he is still on the board. This makes further since when you consider the Jazz situation. they could package collins and miles in a sign and trade deal and get a serviceable back up center to be a bench warmer. trade two bench warmers to make room for a guard who can play a roll simular to what d. fish did. if the jazz do go with Hibbert look for him to keep collins company. to me I am really interested in the second round. as that is where the current management is at its best. Go Jazz.
we will see as charlie wilsons wars cia agent once said whoever gets mr. dressed in a suit for tryouts. much improved and much improved great guy truly seven foot and alot better than people think whoever gets him i think will be very pleasaed and lucky character is destiny not caracter..go roy you will be just fine seems like in most tryouts he outshown the other bigs and held is own OR MORE
The Jazz need to get more athletic in the front court!! Memo, Booz, Collins are all slow. We don't need anymore slow bigs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have you guys watched Hibbert play? He looked solid against the Big East teams I saw during the past season. If he is available, I'd take him over Lopez.
just like mo almond.
Hibbert is a solid center. The Lopez guys do not play against the level of players from the Big East. Did you see him last year against Gregg Ogden - he totally outplayed him. The guy would have been in the lottery last year. I would take a Georgetown Center over a Stanford Center any day of the week. He will be a MUCH better pro than he was in college where big men cannot stay out of foul trouble.
I've probably written too much on this subject already, but the previous writer's point is prescient. How many have you actually seen Hibbert play? Better yet, how many people saw or remember how well he handled Greg Oden in last year's NCAA tournament. This is the kind of defense we need and the kind of center our guys are going to have to defend against. With his length, size and all-around defensive presence, Roy reminds me of a young (1997-vintage) Greg Ostertag. Remember when Ostertag was actually quite good and caused guys like Olajuwon and Shaq so much trouble. But, Hibbert has one major (huge) advantage over Ostertag--desure and work ethic. That is really what killed Ostertag's career. We're not even talking about how much better Hibbert's offensive skills are. Look, there are no guarantees, but I hope/wish/pray the Jazz brain trust are looking at packaging something together to move up a bit (15-17 range) because I very much doubt Hibbert will be available at 23.
I just don't see how the Jazz could possibly pass up the heir apparent to Greg Ostertag.
Tim Malinski,
You compared Hibbert to Ostertag to try to convince us that Hibbert would be a GOOD pick?!?!
Look, I don't know how young you guys are, but I was comparing Hibbert to the 1997 NBA playoffs Greg Ostertag. The guy who played so well against Olajuwon and Shaq that we rewarded him with an outrageously large contract. Ostertag killed/ruined what could have been his potentially better career (defensively) by his lack of desire and work ethic. Desire, tremendous work ethic and a high basketball IQ are some of Hibbert's true strengths. We're not even talking about Hibbert's vastly superior offensive skills--not to mentioned passing and free throw shooting, which everyone overlooks. Look, there are obviously no guarantees, but I hope/wish/pray our Jazz brain trust are looking at packaging something together to move up a bit (15-17 range) because it now looks like there's no way Hibbert will be available at 23. By the way, if you don't remember the Ostertag I'm talking about--go to You Tube--Utah Jazz vs Housten Rockets 1997 (Game 6 West Conf Finals). Besides being reminded how great Stock really was you'll see Ostertag controlling the paint in the short clip--Ostertag finished with 16 pts, 14 rebounds, and countless blocks and deflections. Unfortunately, he became a what could have been.
It is called sarcasm.
Scounting report on Roy Hibbert - Limited athletically, lacks quickness, speed in the open floor, and explosiveness, has trouble against big and athletic centers, must work on ball fakes and becoming less predictable offensively, runs very stiff, slow transitioning from half to full court, has decent shot blocking skills due to his size, but lacks great quickness and reflexes vertically.
I think Tim is correct Hibbert will be gone by 23 . Need to move up in draft.
Hibbert has dominated work outs against mcgee and jordan. his lack of athleticism is overblown. He does great against centers that are big. Where he was slightly when he had to guard 6'7 6'8 power forwards who he won't be guarding with regularity in the NBA. Whichever team drafts Roy will be blown away with how good he turns out to be. More likely than not whatever number he gets drafted at will turn out to be a steal.
My last broadcast for a bit, which I'm sure will please some of you. Your Big and Slow comments are just the verbatum supposed weaknesses spouted by some scouts. You didn't quote the strengths, which they mention: Size, Strength, Frame, Excellent hands, Plays hard, Efficiency, Excellent passer, Mid-range jumper, Back to the basket scoring, Soft touch around basket, Basketball IQ, Work Ethic, Shot-blocking skills, Overall defensive ability, Very young for class, Intangibles, Experienced, Proven at highest level of college basketball. Sounds a little better now doesn't he? We must also mention these reports are written by scouts obsessed with numbers. The same guys who annoint Darius Miles a super star before he even plays a game or say Carlos Boozer won't make it in the NBA and would be lucky to be drafted. This is is all soething of a (hopefully) well thought out gamble, but I think Hibbert is definitely worth are gambling and moving up. For background, I was also estatic with our pick of Morris Almond last year and only time will tell if that was a good call, but that's the way the draft goes....
Comparing Hibbert to Ostertag is a very fair comparison. He has those kind of skills plus hes a great free throw shooter. If you guys could have Ostertag with an actual work ethic, you wouldnt want him? This guy has the potential to be a 10 rebound 2.5 blocks per game kind of guy. Maybe not a scorer but he has some very rare skillsets. No way is a 7-2 shot blocker available by number 23. If he is, id be absolutely thrilled.
I think this far down in the draft you are hoping you get a good pick. Chances are you won`t. I think no matter what you get what you get.
I hope that we could get something out of this draft. I say it's hibbert or nothing. We don't have extra spots for rookies. O'Connor likes to keep a spot open on the roster in case we make a mid-season trade. I'm still frustrated we didn't trade kirilenko for marion
If the Jazz were able to move up in the draft, they need to go for a more athletic big like Marreese Speights. However, seeing that everyone else wants to move up in the draft as well, it is unlikely they do so. With that said, I would suggest they draft Serge Ibaka at the 23rd pick and leave him overseas. This would allow for an extra roster spot. And also I personally think they ought to try hard to draft DeVon Hardin in the second round, even if it means giving up both picks to get him. He is big and athletic and can run the court very well. He may be a project, but with the roster we have, there is no one that is going to come in and play decent minutes. Not even Hibbert.
marion didn't want to come to utah
Hibbert will begone by the time the jazz draft.
Cleveland or new jesey will snatch him up if he still available, he is one the few "sure" centers in the draft, meaning he can give 15-20 minutes a game right now, though he will never be great.
NO general manager wanting to keep his job, can afford to pass him up.
Maybe the jazz can still get jason thompson, who I think may be the big steal in the draft. Unless there some foriegner we know little about (like okur or manu in past drafts).
