My short term memory is very, who pushed this war? Who called in every political favor they could, who pressured our allies?
There are folks in the government who now admit that we had no reason to invade or we had no proof of weapons in fact we had intelligence to the contrary.

We need to stop drilling. We need to drive vehicles that don't use gasoline. We only have a small window of opportunity to save ourselves and our planet. I really hope gas goes to $10 a gallon. Maybe then, people will finally stop driving gas powered vehicles.

I would love to have the luxury of being an environmental liberal elitist, but instead find I live in a world of reality defined, in part, by the following:
1)An ever expanding population and the emergence of former third world counties into the world-wide competitive market.
2)The dependence of the human race and their respective governments on proven energy sources.
3)Alternative energy sources that the brightest scientists, engineers and technicians speculate are 10-15 years away from market feasibility.
4)Reality that given today's technology you can't have both a high MPG & safe automobile. Weight factors for and against. Which do we prefer?
5)Though we import 60% of our oil, our friends in the mid-east import only 5% of their production to the US. We have no leverage against them whatsoever.
6)We, for whatever reason, are terrified of nuclear energy, though France, go figure, produces 80% of their electricty via nuclear power.
7)That we live in a country blessed with an abundance of natural resources intended for our wise use, but held hostage by the ignorant and proud.
8)And, because I'm running out of words, locked in eternal bi-partisan combat that is sucking the life out of us.

All,
I love the people on these posts telling me how I should live my life. Im not going to conserve, I only get one chance at life and I want to live it the way I live it. If that means I fill up my Hummer 5 times a day, good for me, if I can afford it then its none of your business. Another thing, when is America going to wake up and realize that Global Warming is a hoax. There is more scientific evidence against global warming then for it. The environment is fine, mother earth can take care of herself.
Observer | 1:55 p.m. June 18, 2008
Bush is doing all he can to reward big oil and the wealthy for helping him get elected. As if tax breaks for the wealthy and tax breaks for big oil when they're making the highest profits in the history of the US weren't enough. Now he wants to give them the right to make money off public lands by oil shale and offshore drilling. Oil companies have the rights to develop 98 million acres of public land right now and haven't done it. Why? Because they were waiting for the price to go sky high. Another fine example from the GOP(Greedy Old Party).
Engineer | 1:56 p.m. June 18, 2008
There is no such thing as man made global warming. So drilling for oil will not damage the Earth. There are only 4 CO2 molecules for every 10,000 molecules of air. Those 4 molecules do not retain heat, form a blanket or layer (wind is too busy), or increase the temperature of the earth at all. The Sun has way more influence over global temperatures. It operates just like a light that you can adjust to become brighter or darker. Which light is hotter a bright one or a dark one. Over the past 100 years the radiance of the sun has increased, it has gotten brighter. That is why many believe the Earth is warming. CO2 has nothing to do with it.

We should drill and utilize the resources we have while we develop nuclear and fusion power. Those two sources of power are the only ones that can replace oil.

I work as an engineer that develops alternative sources of power if we go to carbon credits then Al Gore will make a mountain of money. He and his buddies are all about green backs. Man made global warming is a myth and we should drill.
Heaven help us.... | 2:09 p.m. June 18, 2008
Stupidity resides with those who believe we are going to run out of oil. Stupidity resides with those who believe we are going to replace oil with something that generates as much energy for a lower price.

These grand little hybrid cars are great for shuttling Jimmy to the soccer game, but try shipping all of our food, clothes, toys, (you name it) with semi trucks, trains, planes and ships using hybrid or hydrogen engines..... good luck.

Petroleum affects every aspect of our lives, right down to the water in our faucets being pumped there or purified by systems that operate on diesel engines or electricity that is generated by coal fired power plants..... How do you think those plants get their coal?..... not by hybrid trains.

All resources for oil that we have in this country should be tapped and developed immediately... and good riddance to the tree-huggers and politicians who are trying to stop it.
Explain to me... | 2:15 p.m. June 18, 2008
why it will take so long to produce this oil we are taking about? I know a bunch of places in south Sanpete County where they are drilling for oil. I can name a couple places where they are pumping oil.

So I don't get the whole, "it will take years to pump usable oil." They are doing it now!

Someone explain to me why this will take so long to find and pump the oil when they are doing it right now!

I am all for alternate fuels (except for the ethanol route, that was and is a disaster) but let's buy us some time and drill now.

I have no doubts that shortly we will be driving vehicles that don't run on oil, and I am all for that but right now I am struggling to pay all the bills and drive to work. There is no mass transit where I live.

Let's fix the now!

To CRM: A true "environmentalist liberal elitist"(if that is what you would like to call them) lives a very basic, simple life. That is the essence of the environmental movement. Get rid of your worldly possessions. It really is not that hard. SIMPLIFY! Your life would be so much more meaningful spritually and temporally. Plus, you would not have to worry about the price of gas.
Frank | 2:30 p.m. June 18, 2008
I'm surprised to see a lot of level headed debate on this topic. Prior to this it seemed to be the majority of people were screaming conspiracy against the miracle of the world "oil shale".
I guess when Bush gave his endorsment to the idea a lot of people realized maybe it still needs some work.

We will always need some oil but for the short-term we can seriously cut down to meet the average world use or at least pay the average world price. No one else is worring about running out but us. Option C would be to burn our candle at both ends and become a 3rd world has-been country in the distant future.

As for James J, I'm glad you enjoy that "Live for Myself Only" philosophy, in fact someone with that exact same philosphy might soon take that hummer illegaly and strip it for parts. Unless your being sarcastic, in which case, much enjoyed!
Re:James J | 2:32 p.m. June 18, 2008
I agree 100% that global warming and changing weather patterns are a hoax. Why right here in Iowa we were blessed with abundant rain, in fact we had two rainfalls that were catagorized as not happening except every 500 years, within 15 years of each other (er, can someone hand me a snorkel?) In fact I'm sure I can get the folks in New Orlenes to back me up. We're not going to be stampeded by these scientist know-it-alls, we feel safe right here under our rock.
Obama's Plan | 2:32 p.m. June 18, 2008
Obama's plan is to raise our taxes so the government can research alternative fuels that may or may not ever come to fruition. At the same time his Marxist government drains our paychecks, we will be paying $10.00/gallon gas, quadruple food prices and a lot more on just about everything else.

When we have turned into a third-world country and the poor are starving to death in the streets, the "elite liberals" will then ask us to sacrifice eating too.
Re: Anonymous | 2:36 p.m. June 18, 2008
You said: A true "environmentalist liberal elitist"(if that is what you would like to call them) lives a very basic, simple life. That is the essence of the environmental movement.

And here I though Al Gore was the poster child.

I think you're talking about living a more conservative life but I wouldn't dare suggest that you call yourself conservative because that would mean you actaully understood the word.

I wasnt very excited about oil-shale production, someone guessed that it would take massive amounts of water and about 3/4 a barrel of oil to make 1 barrel of oil. But even 1/4 of 800 Billion sitting in shale would last us a couple hundred years, long enough for further technologies. If we minimilized our oil use it could last indefinitly.

I'm just afraid we will use new oil as an excuse to put more gas in the hummer and put off alternate energy till people 100 years from now are screaming armageddon.

Kind of like a kid putting off homework till sunday, then faking sick monday, only to find himself tuesday morning with nothing prepared but a blank sheet of paper.
Oh Please | 2:42 p.m. June 18, 2008
So Bush has also declared war on the laws of physics. "Shale oil" is not oil. It requires vast quantities of energy to burn the keragen out of the rock.It requires millions of gallons of water to turn it into a hydrocarbon. Energy and water IN far exceed the value of energy and water OUT. It is simply not usable. Unocal pulled out after blowing $65 million on it. Are we now going to subsidize another round of this absurdity and destroy the Uintah Basin in the process?
Craig | 2:45 p.m. June 18, 2008
I am chuckling over the occasional post from Cannon's people trying so hard to make him look good. If Cannon's leadership on this issue has been so effective, why are we paying $4/gallon for gas? Why have Republicans waited until Congress was run by Democrats to display any passion on energy issues?
James J | 2:49 p.m. June 18, 2008
All I'm saying is that no one should tell anyone how to live as long as your not hurting anyone. (thats the greatest thing about America, we can make our own choices.)
My second point is that for something to be scientific fact, it needs to be fact. With more and more evidence against man made Global Warming, how CAN it be fact? Instead of listening to Al Gore and the types, do your own research, learn for yourselves, be proactive about what and why you believe something. There is no such thing as blind faith.

WE are the only Country On The Planet, that matters, that does not Develop and use it Natural Resources. That allows small groups of Citizens to prevent development and stop progress. That allows a small amount of people to tie up the attempts at progress in Courts and cost the tax payers Trillions of dollars in Time, Lost Jobs, and most of all, loss of the use of resources. This is sick and very very wrong. George Bush needs to declare a National Security Emergency and allow Development and Drilling by Executive Order. I think 5 Dollars a Gallon for Gas is a National Emergency. If everyone lived within their means, the nation included we would be better off. Drilling will not help in the short run but in the long run it sure will not hurt. Had Drilling started 10-15 years ago we would not have our present problems. Lots of the Blame falls on Extreme Environmentalists, but also the failure to control them. We need to save our own Nation by Developing our own Resources. Coal, Oil, Steam, Nuke, Natural Gas, Wind, or everything else.
Anonymous | 3:20 p.m. June 18, 2008

This is crazy. We've been outsourcing pollution to Russia, the Middle East, China, etc. It's okay if they ruin the environment, but heaven forbid if we develop our own resources.

C'mon folks. If anyone can do it with the least environmental impact it's the good 'ol USA.

Even developing alternative engery sources will take decades. Our economy, our way of life, is oil based. We need it now. If don't do anything, we're still in the same situation except we will be paying higher prices.

Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less.
To: Oh Please | 3:28 p.m. June 18, 2008
Actually, Shell Oil is developing a way to process the oil shell in the ground so all they have to do is pump it up. Doesn't require all the 'extra resources' you mention. Check it out. Get informed.

George Bush is the greatest American alive. Anyone who questions his motives are just enemies of a free America. If the President calls for it then I'm completely in favor. END OF DISCUSSION.
It's Time | 3:34 p.m. June 18, 2008
I'm glad we're finally talking about this. This has been coming for the last five years and we've sat doing nothing. Safely drilling our own resources is the only responsable thing to do given the reality of the economy. For that matter if you truly care for the poor cheap energy is key. Who is feeling this the most...the poor. It's time to end this once and for all. This is a matter of national security. Don't forget if we get building inside the US guess who gets the jobs?...Americans. It's time to stop running from the invisible monster of global warming. I'm not advocating we just pollute as much as possible in our extraction of oil but I would much rather American companies who are held responsable for their action extract it safely than foreign companies that do not have sound track records. Like China 50 miles off the coast of Florida.

Since the board is so full of knowledge on the subject, someone please answer....

Does the shale oil sit on land in Utah that goes into the School Trust fund?

If so it will go to the education fund for our students. I'm assuming they would have oil and mineral rights as well...

Anyone?

I am sure this won't get printed, because it's the truth, and, some will feel it's offensive, but this Republican tells the truth here - "ME". - Beams me up Scotty, there's no more intelligence life left here on this planet I'm sorry to say!. Just to sign a birthday card and than them asking our to help the Republican National Committee in the form of a secure online gift of $62 or whatever you can afford - $25, $75, $100, $500 or even $1,000, than you can celebrate President Bush's 62nd birthday on July 6. They know George will appreciate receiving warm wishes from loyal supporters on his special day. Bush urged Congress to fine big oil that's not drilling on federal land's as per their leasing contract on federal lands. Both sides BLAME each other that we have been on bended knee to foreign potentates, while this country's vast energy sources go undeveloped. Plus the Dem's want to block all off shore drilling in Florida. The blame game will not lower our gas prices, action will. WE NEED MORE ACTION before July 2008. Call them all today.
Our President is a Goober | 3:53 p.m. June 18, 2008
Extracting oil from shale is an expensive process.
Who is going to end up with that bill? The country is already over a trillion dollars in debt. We need to set a goal and then to commit to it. Someone at the top (and it will not be our commander and chief) will need to say that by in "10 years" we will be lowering our dependence on oil by a certain percentage. Then those in Washington will actually need to follow through. I know I probably have a better shot of witnessing a Jewish, Palenstinian barbecue complete with a cake walk but a man can dream right?
Drill now! | 4:03 p.m. June 18, 2008
Drill now, drill anywhere there is oil. We have the technology to drill for oil and keep the environment protected. Besides, Al Gore is a moron and global warming is a "scam" We need to quit giving the greenies all the power or we won't be able to afford to live or exist at all!
To James J | 4:04 p.m. June 18, 2008
I don't understand how you think that filling your Hummer 5 times a day is your own business. Do you really believe doing so has no impact on others? Really? That much gas into the air doesn't do anything to add to winter inversions? Or to the demand side of the spectrum, which increases the price of gas for us all? And for that matter, what does being rich and enjoying life have to do with filling your Hummer five times a day? Do you live in Tooele? The Salt Flats? Or do you just refuse to live a good life at or near the place you reside? Sounds like you don't understand how the good life works, if you're always driving.

I suppose a good person would instead cut back and use that saved money on a good cause. Then again, it's pretty hard to prove how righteous you are to your neighbors if you aren't busy flaunting your wealth and your Hummer.

Not a good life to me. Hope you're enjoying yourself.

John | 4:07 p.m. June 18, 2008
So really we should drill for oil shale because then we wouldn't need property taxes anymore? So once again it's all about money I see.

I moved FROM SoCal TO Utah to escape that mindset, only to find it stronger here in UT.

I've heard the best things in life are free (like a nice evening walk with a loved one over driving all over the valley to entertain ourselves in ways wherein interaction with loved ones is minimized). Apparently I'm the only one that agrees.
RE: To: Oh Please | 4:09 p.m. June 18, 2008
Yes, Check it out. Get informed. The "in situ" process that Shell Oil is "developing", just doesn't, or at least, isn't working. They have spent millions of dollars and years putting a "freeze wall" around an area that they later plan to heat up the area inside the wall (yes first freeze then heat). They have to heat the rock so it releases the kerogen (still not oil) so they can collect the kerogen and heat it some more to convert it to oil. This is the proposed process. So far they haven't even got the freeze wall done. (To: Oh Please) says "all they have to do is pump it up". Well, it's a little more involved and requirees a lot of other energy even though it doesn't require those other "extra resources". So far the technology does not exist to successfullly produce oil from oil shale, dispite what many are trying to say.
Steve - Re: It will take an ... | 4:14 p.m. June 18, 2008
Willow is right.

And if you have been paying attention, drilling our own oil will not solve our immediate problems... according to what's been said it will take up to 10 years for us to see any results from our own drilling.

What happens if by then other solutions have been made? What do we do with the oil drills that we've built here?

If we do build some of our own, I'd hope we do it someplace besides Alaska. Anywhere but there. Let's keep at least one wilderness area untouched as long as we can.

I like money as much as anyone else, but your apparent wish that environmentalists would just go away is fairly sad in my opinion. There's more to this world than just money. Once the entire environment goes to pot and is beyond repair, no ammount of money is going to save you or me (or our decendants) in the end.
Just a guy | 4:17 p.m. June 18, 2008
To Orem parent: The School trust admin. does have some land in areas with oil shale. However the technology does not exist to produce oil from shale as many would like you to believe. At a mimimum, there isn't anyone currently producing oil from shale. No, not anyone, anywhere. Remember, oil shale and tar sands are two completely different things.I work in the business and have talked with many of the companies working to develop oil shale.
Steve - Re: Andrew 1:32 pm | 4:19 p.m. June 18, 2008
That's good to hear about Chevron. Now if only more oil/gas companies would follow their lead and then if all these companies would switch the majority of their product to "green" fuel/power sources rather than oil. Note I said the majority, not all as oil is used for other things than our cars.
RE xscribe | 10:30 a.m. | 4:21 p.m. June 18, 2008
We have the technology to wean ourselves off oil and gas so we don't need to drill? Bush said this a few years ago that we would be moving to a hydrogen economy and that didn't work? Is what you are talking about going to work?

What we must do is pursue all options now so we can be assured something will work. Wind, Solar, Nuclear, Shale, Drilling, CAFE standards for vehicles to improve gas mileage, Higher Standards for appliances to use less power, higher standards for houses to use less heating/cooling, and retrofiting older houses.

What we shouldn't drill just because you say there are alternatives that we have your word on will work? Uh ummm, lets pursue all options now so we can be assured that at least one of the things we try will work. Maybe there is no one answer, maybe they will all work and we still need to do them all.
Steve-Re:ObamaSuporter & Greed | 4:26 p.m. June 18, 2008
I agree with you. Except I'm not so sure I want gas prices to go that high. Why? Because in this self centered "me me me" society it won't cause people to give up their cars and demand non-gas cars (though a large number will do that)... I think the most likely result of gas prices going that high would be for the government/congress to ignore the environment and we'll have oil drills sprouting up everywhere just like Bush wants.

Speaking of Bush, I'm a Republican but I sincerely hope McCain doesn't win or he'll continue Bush's demands for more oil rigs IN America. I really hope Obama wins instead as he's more likely to help keep this from happening (I'm predicting a win for him... he's already ahead of McCain in the polls).

Everyone should get used to these words: "President Obama" (you should be hearing them alot in the next 4-8 years).
Brother Chuck Schroeder | 4:41 p.m. June 18, 2008
President Bush urged Congress to fine big oil that's not drilling on federal land's as per their leasing contract on federal lands they are in breach of federal contract's. However, "TO URGE" is "NOT DOING", action is doing and stalling with THIS ISSUE has gone on lone enough folks. All Obama does to is sit back and suck his baby thumb and blame's the other side as well and does not do anything except block thing's that will cure this gas problem. Obama don't know what we voter's are even talking about here. It's time you hardcore Republican's in Utah got up off your lazy butts and start calling up your Congress leader's today as well as all other's in this Country to. I'm for protecting the enviroment and I also want lower gas prices as I am teetering on the edge of loosing everything I hold dear and need for my not so far away old age retirement when I am unable to work (I have health issues as many do). I am also for alternative fuels. But everything takes time to change or develope. But let's ask the big question. Who is willing to give up their way of life to side with the exstreamist on both sides of this issue? Also what about those of us who have family scattered all over this great land of ours and would like to see face to face once in awhile? The current soulutions avaible are only good for short distances such as getting to work. Let's look at the whole picture before opening our mouths.
Peter B | 5:19 p.m. June 18, 2008
Important to note that oil and gas lease monies provide critical revenues collected to federal and local governments and offset taxes, even when leased lands go undeveloped by oil companies.
Kris | 5:19 p.m. June 18, 2008
According to a survey by the Rand Corp., oil can be produced from oil shale at $70-95/barrel. Once production facilities are complete, (aprox. 500,000 barrels produced) the price would fall to $30-40/barrel. Several countries (Russia, China, Estonia, Brazil) currently utilize oil shale for power generation. Some degree of energy independence can be realized by use of this resource.

As previously stated, this is one piece of a puzzle that includes 1)conservation, 2)nuclear, 3)hydro/solar/wind, 4)additional drilling (2-3 yrs if not regulated to death or 7-10 yrs if current regulation is left in place), and 5)development of alternative energy sources.

This is not a liberal/conservative debate. This is a fight for our way of life. Everything we rely on in our daily lives from food, transportation, goods, health care, construction materials, etc., depends on no to slow increases in energy prices. Rapid increases have and will harm our way of life and our economy for decades to come. We can't drill ourselves out of this problem but we also can't sit on our hands and hope a magic alternative energy source appears.

"As Governor of California, I will do everything in my power to fight the federal government on this issue and prevent any new offshore drilling," Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a McCain supporter, said Wednesday.

But Whitaker notes that in California, which suffered a devastating oil spill from a rig off Santa Barbara in 1969, opposition to offshore drilling is bi-partisan. From the governor to local environmentalists, California is largely green.

"You get much bigger improvement in a much shorter period of time by really aggressively going after conservation than you ever would with offshore oil drilling," said Mark Gold with the conservation group Heal The Bay.

Gold told Whitaker reserves off California wouldn't last long. In fact, at current consumption rates of 21 million barrels a day, Americans would use up the estimated 18 billion barrels off the coasts all around the country in less than two and a half years.

Renewable energy is necessary, and we need cheap energy to get there. Why not just go to solar? Solar cells are made with metal and plastic, both of which are ultimately extracted from the earth and refined at great energy cost. They are transported to factories on trucks and trains, and manufactured by machine tools (also expensive in energy to manufacture and run) and workers; the workers arrive in cars/trucks/transit and work in a heated/air-conditioned factory. The cells are designed by scientists and engineers who meet and communicate using electricity and fossil fuels. The finished parts are transported using energy. The installation site is excavated and prepared using energy. The workers arrive by car, truck, and plane to assemble the panels. The controls and transmission equipmment also requires power me make and install. The panels have to be set and maintained. When do the panels actually produce more energy than they consumed to make? That time is a long way away, and too costly unless that initial energy to manufactyure was very cheap to begin with. Let's get our energy costs down AND get the will to produce renewable forms. It is our only hope.

Listen, my chemically challenged pal, you can't make oil "shell" (BTW, it's "shale") into oil without adding hydrogen. It's not a natural hydrocarbon. That hydrogen has to come from somewhere, namely huge quantities of water. Unless Chris Cannon and Bush and Shell Oil can figure out how to make hydrocarbons without hydrogen, they are all whistling up your pants. What morons.

Scream it out. Drill Drill Drill! And Drill Now! Will that improve our situation now? Absolutely. The oil is being speculated to inflated prices. Remember 1999? "89 cents a gallon" Not That many cars have been added to our highway to create these monster prices in 10 years. Yes, I am for alternative fuels but we must send a message and start rapidly on a path of total energy independence. This is long overdue. Clinton, I believed, close down these shell reserves out of spite for Utah voting conservative and republican in his Presidencial elections. Well, his time has come and gone for revenge. This resounding cry to drill, will give the world a clear message that we are becoming independent from their influence to harm our country.

The problem here is that we've continued a failed policy from a previous administration. This started during the Clinton years. Get rid of the policy and start drilling.

Do we need to seek alternatives - yes, but it will take years for any of them to come on line. We need a solution now and drilling US resources is what we need.

You are the pot calling the kettle black. I live in Texas and right next to an engineer working with Nasa and the oil companies. Why, you ask, does he do both? Simple, my "chemically challenged pal". Space exploration to the moon and Mars. Japan has already developed the technology to get hydrogen and oxygen out of moon soil to create water. I have seen it myself at NASA. Hydrogen is easily manufactured with technology that we have now. The oil companies have all the necessary materials and know how to do the oil extraction. You are out of date. They also have a plan to reinstitute the soil back in to where they have drilled to avoid big gulfs of waste or depletion of other resourses in the soil. Let them come and drill and fast. We, as Americans, can do it better and faster than anyone. If you are so concerned about the enviroment, go to China and clean up the filthy air there that when it rains people put on outer clothing to collect the water and dirt on it instead of their nice clothing. Whistle up your own pants.

Bush is.... | 8:32 p.m. June 18, 2008
Not the prblem or the enemy.

He has been trying to get Congress to do something about this for years and they would not; probably just to make him look bad. The response of the Dems today to Bush should tell you something. Ahnold is a travesty and should have stuck to acting. Anyone who thinks we should NOT drill is just self serving and very, very foolish.

Drill here, drill NOW!!!! Get independent of foreign interests that sit and laugh at America as they rush to the bank. Disgusting that some just cannot seem to understand these truths... America is a mess.
Money leaving the U.S. | 8:47 p.m. June 18, 2008
Do you naysayers understand that the foreign oil coming to the United States sends billions of our money overseas to foreign entities that don't like us very much? Everytime we pump gas, a big chunk of that money we give to the cashier goes back to the Middle East and much of the rest ( 45%) to taxes to the government. The oil companies have only 15% of it coming back for investments and research and development. Sure, the CEOs are too rich and out of touch but that is not the entire oil company. Many teacher, private companies and other groups invest in the oil companies for retirement. A huge amountof the oil companies are controlled by group stock holders across the country. I want our money and power to determine our own fate to rest with the American people. Drilllll!
