Take notice Utah: this is happening to you too.

(San Marcos, CA) -- About 20 members of the San Diego Minutemen protested outside a San Marcos Mormon church yesterday morning as Mexican government officials passed out identification cards to Mexican citizens. About 150 people were given the I.D. cards which allow illegal immigrants to receive a variety of services normally provided to U.S. citizens. Sheriff's deputies say the protest was peaceful.

US Immigraton Law states " anyone who entices or assists some to come to the United States ILLEGALLY or to stay in the United States ILLEGALLY is guilty of a crime.

Chris Cannon has been consistent. You ask why he hasn't done anything; he has! He is one of a couple hundred congressmen. Congress had the chance to pass a decent bill which Cannon supported, but failed. Many of the problems rather dubiously assigned to illegal immigrants would be solved with Chris Cannon's plan. Free health care? Really? Why would someone who is trying to hide go to the doctor? Give them a way out of the shadows, and they will have to pay taxes, pay for health care, and gladly turn in criminals hiding among them. Rounding them up, figuring out where they came from, and shipping them off to Columbia or Honduras or where ever will do nothing for anybody.

I wouldn't really consider myself a Cannon supporter, but the reason that people attack Jason personally is because he's PERSONALLY smug and unlikeable. You can't compare Chris and Jason because Jason doesn't have experience that has to do with being a Congressman. So sometimes you have to look into the personal life of a candidate.

He has a BS in communications? Yay, he can speak! Good for him! He has a very slim knowledge of Issues and I think he would make a very poor Congressman. Paraphrasing from someone's comment before after a different article, Chaffetz is a mile wide and an inch deep. He know's a little about a varierty of things, but he doesn't know a lot about them. I know Cannon isn't all that wonderful, but he is a whole heck of a lot smarter, even if he can't talk very well.

The good Chris... | 9:41 a.m. June 17, 2008
...or the evil Chris? We got a glimpse of the inner conflict back in February when he told the Trib Editorial Board, "We shouldn't destroy the economy by removing them from the economy."
Within a day or two Chris was saying something else again.
Then there is the conflicting message of receiving campaign contributions in 2004 from Christopher Teras, an East Coast immigration lawyer who processed hundreds of work visas for Agriprocessors, the company that was raided in Iowa recently.
Chris is a prime example of the problem in Washington. We don't have the political will to do hard things like deportation and mandatory verification. Instead they feed us rhetoric.
We're tired of it.
As for Tim's comment (9:22 am) the Center for Immigration Studies explains that legalizing illegals does NOT take away the social services burden. If anything, it will qualify them for more benefits.

Voters should question both candidates about their stances on vigorous interior enforcement of our immigration laws. Are they willing to go after the American employers who violate these laws, or have their campaigns been funded so heavily by these employers that they are completely beholden to them? We hear a lot about building a fence, deportation, ICE raids, etc., but where are the stories about catching and punishing the employers of these illegal aliens?

I would like to see our representatives in Washington have the courage to do the following:

1)Aggressively seek out and punish employers who violate immigration laws.
2)Take away the freebies except for emergency medical care.
3)Eliminate anchor baby provision - the 14th Amendment was never intended to be used/abused in the way it is now.
4)Establish immigration criteria that allow only those people who will help to maintain our great nation and whose loyalty will be given to America and no other country.
5)Establish assimilation guidelines for legal immigrants to help them feel welcome and a part of our country.

If we did these things, most illegal aliens would simply self deport and the problem would take care of itself.

How come no one's complaining about Joe this time??? Because it's always been equal reporting! This article is in no way giving Cannon any benefit. Next article with Cannon on the front picture everyone will start complaining again. I find that funny of the Chaffetz supporters.
DBG @ "No to Jason!" | 9:50 a.m. June 17, 2008
The US Constitution never required representation to live within a district. You can't blame Jason or anyone else but the Founding Fathers on this one. The only requirement was they had to reside within the State that the district is in. This is a no big deal. People like you are making this an issue.

Cannon, who is also an editor for this newspaper (a job that like so many politicians and staffers they get for the position not their expertise or experience) is like any other Utah Republican... "Runs with the Pack."

C'mon folks, it really is time to vote Democrats back in. In fact Utah has the potential to vote more 'Blue Dog' Democrats into office than any other state in the Union (with the exception of Idaho). Hey, Montana voted a 'Blue Dog' Democratic senator in last election cycle, and he's more conservative on a number of issues than the Republican incumbent he beat out.

Don't know what a 'Blue Dog' Democrat is? Do a Google search to find out.

You'll all be surprised to find out there are conservative Democrats with traditional family, patriotic and fiscally conservative values without that aren't neocon arses and all. Most importantly, 'Blue Dog' Democrats are strong on free-market economics but absolutely eschew Corporate Socialism and Corporate Welfare schemes.

Seriously! Look up what a 'Blue Dog' Democrat is. Look up the 'Blue Dog' Democrats of congress. You'll be surprised and delighted that there really is hope... and it's from the Democratic party, not the Republicans.

The term "protecting our borders" is a non issue with immigrants from Mexico. It's all about 2 other things, terrorists from al Queda crossing our borders, and hate directed towards hispanics.

We need to reform our immigration policies and rules, to allow more free access to our relatively opulent economy, for our relatively poor neighbors from Mexico. Mexico is our friend, we should be their friend, and we should help a friend in need. Sooner rather than later.

So let's be more honest in this debate. I'm calling out the hate mongers to leave the arena. I'm calling for humanitarian efforts to educate and otherwise help our friendly neighbors from Mexico. We can afford to do this, and we must do this.
Chaffetz wins every contest | 10:13 a.m. June 17, 2008
Chaffetz is the better candidate. He's charismatic, energetic, hard-working, personable, clear, concise, and right on target to win the primary.

Chris Cannon is scared. He should be.

Everyone I know is voting for Chaffetz, including some former coworkers who were in his parade party last week in Orem. Don't believe all the bunk about his being impossible to work with. It's not true.

I couldn't be happier. I was going to vote for ABC, and I actually have somebody viable this election. Yippee!

Illegal? Responsible - | 10:14 a.m. June 17, 2008
Catch 22 with the system as it currently is, and what needs to change is the following. 1. There's no direct incentive for the average citizen to present evidence to ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement)-the only 'incentive' is that maybe by hunting down evidence on my neighbor's construction crew, MAYBE I'll be hired instead of them. 2. What incentive is there for those here illegally to identify themselves to a system that will deport them? - if 'no amnesty' is given. My suggestion is that there be a public announcement made that states that all illegals need to come forward and identify themselves and that there is no threat of deportation. They must pay a fee that compensates their failure to report themselves earlier. Those fees will go to processing fees that decrease the fees for legal immigration. A date is set in which other laws that are more stringent will go into effect and anyone here illegally will be deported. Punishment by money is the only way to hold employers accountable for not requiring proof of legality, and to give direct incentive to be here legally and report illegal immigrants.
Reagan Republican | 11:01 a.m. June 17, 2008
The only power Republicans will have in Washington the next four years will be articulate communication of conservative values. They will lose the House and Senate and will be marginalized on legislation by a Democrat majority. Chris Cannon will NOT be a catalyst for change. Reagans power to lead came from his communication skills. When Chris Cannon speaks publicly it is an embarrassment to our district. We need less experience in Washington and more patriots. The argument that Chris Cannon will make the better representative because he knows his way around the back rooms where the power brokers make their millions is Clintonian absurdity. We need a Mr. Smith in Washington calling the pig a pig. The Democrats are kicking our trash with a good communicator in Obama in a take-no-prisoners war of socialism vs. conservatism. At least Mr. Chaffetz has some charisma and can speak with passion.
Whoa, Nellie | 11:01 a.m. June 17, 2008
To davd4197, Are you from the Mexican Consulate? Here's where our "friends" from Mexico have already benefitted:
1) 31% of all LEGAL immigration comes from one country Mexico. Even in the great migration of a century ago, no TWO countries combined made up 30% of the immigrants.
2) 56% of the ILLEGAL aliens in the United States come from one country Mexico.
3) 71% of Mexican immigrants speak little or no English. Assimilation problem #1
4) Only 19.8% of Mexicans have chosen to become naturalized citizens. Assimilation problem #2
5) 57% of Mexican immigrants do not have health insurance.
6) 50.9% of Mexican immigrants use some form of welfare services, paid for by U S taxpayers.
7) Remittances back to Mexico totaled $24.3 BILLION flowing out of our economy last year.
8) The United States purchases 1.3 MILLION barrels of oil EACH DAY from Mexico at $130 a pop.
How much more of this "friendship" can we tolerate?
Wouldn't it be nice | 11:03 a.m. June 17, 2008
Wouldn't it be nice if we cold somehow change the tax laws from income taxation to taxing us more on the things we buy? This way ALL of us would be taxed the same depending on what we buy and the illegal immagrants would pay into the system that they use also. Wouldn't this solve at least some of the immigration problems?
UT CO Mom | 11:02 a.m. June 17, 2008
Cannon is the real deal - knowledgeable, informed, and effective. Chaffetz is cute and gives a good speech, just like Obama. He is a stuffed shirt.
Time for Cannon to go | 11:12 a.m. June 17, 2008
I'm with Just Another View. No jobs, no tuition discounts, no medical care, no drivers licenses, no automatic citizenship for babies... If we quit giving them benefits, they won't stay.

And as for the threat that the economy will come crashing to a halt, let's just see how bad it gets. I remember the great walkout on cinco de mayo a year or two ago. I felt nothing. I did note one restaurant that was closed that day, and I didn't go back there for a full year, in my own little "protest move."

If you want to live here, get in line, fill out the forms, pay your fees and do it LEGALLY.
Where the burden needs to rest | 11:11 a.m. June 17, 2008
The burden of illegal immigration needs to fall back on the heads of those illegal immigrants who caused the problem in the first place. The government needs to facilitate LEGAL immigration by accessing due compensation from ILLEGAL immigration. Let those who are here LEGALLY be compensated by those who have been working ILLEGALLY, or deport them! The system is too rewarding of illegals and employers who have sooner brushed off the hassle of legal immigration and brushed off the red tape. I is too burdensome and taxing on those who take the time to migrate legally. Huge accountability failure on the part of our government. A huge mis-perception in the publics' eye that it's cheaper to hire illegals, and a major element of The 'United States of America' and its stability that has been invaded by an unstable and corrupt lack of system that has existed for years in Central and South America. The economy of Central and South America, however, and its health is directly tied to North America's. Sickness is contagious and more stability needs to exist in both the North and the South.

James,
The only one S-N-O-O-K-E-R-E-D is you, a sour Leavitt supporter who was blinded by Leavitt's money and a job for you. You are so bitter about loosing that you can't see straight. Get a life and look at the facts, Jason is the next Congressman from the 3rd district and you are just a poor sport. Get a life.....
Bail Fees or no release | 11:26 a.m. June 17, 2008
The TV Series, "Frontline" has a special on "Human Smuggling" across the border. - - - it shows repeated attempts by people to cross the border. People are caught, and then released. I simply can't believe that there's NO holding of those people and NO bail! - - - They yet carry money that they'll pay to the coyotes at gunpoint AFTER they've crossed the border. - Take the money they would've used to pay the coyotes and punish them at a payable bail. Those bails are used toward strengthening legal immigration .
Cannon has done nothing on | 11:34 a.m. June 17, 2008
Immigration
McCain has done nothing all these years
Yet these 2 Birds want re Elected
When these Mexican People are gone
You will realize what a mistake you have made
I find the white people to be the most hateful of them all
We have major problems in the Judicial system
Put your efforts whare they are needed
James J | 11:46 a.m. June 17, 2008
Why is it that when I say people who break the law need to be punished, I am called hate filled? I just expect people who break the law to be held accountable. I'm not hate filled. Im not a neocon, If you want to bash on me and people who believe like me please do it by the issues, not by calling us names. That is the difference between a conservative and a liberal: conservative people argue points and liberals argue emotion.
davd4197 | 11:47 a.m. June 17, 2008
whoa nellie, you made my case.
all your stats are fluff. These people are our friends and neighbors, not our enemies. We need to stop criminalizing them. Your stats are good for the round file, and for people who monitor such things. We need to change our policy to make immigration more possible, ending your 1st 4 (worthless) stats. Assimilation? Yo soy gringo, pero yo hablo otras lenguas, no hay problema. These people inhabited the western US before we anglos did. We anglos do not have an inalienable right to block our friends and neighbors from sharing our relative opulence, education, or health care system. I say.

sounds like you're part of the crowd that hates Mexicans. Sal de aqui! Or learn to be tolerant and generous and helpful. We buy our oil from anybody (including ourselves) at that price, it's not a Mexican problem. Stay on subject.
Re: Cannon has done nothing... | 11:54 a.m. June 17, 2008
I don't like McCain either but it's not like he's 'done nothing', and Obama is worse.
When these 'Mexican People' are gone (whichever of the hundreds of millions you're referring to are) our country will be less a few million people who refuse to carry their load with being law abiding citizens and more peaceful as it was before they were here.
I'm a white person and I love my God and my family and my country enough to obey its laws - even the ones I don't like. I find the more hateful people are the ones who DON'T want to obey the laws and don't want to be accountable for breaking them.
'We have major problems in the Judicial system' - 'we' = your own judgments that seem to need some sharpening skills - best of luck in increasing your own capacity to make better judgments!
Whoa, Nellie | 12:07 p.m. June 17, 2008
Davd, take it up with the Pew Hispanic Center, the Department of Energy, and the US Census Bureau. And your approach isn't fair to our 4 BILLION other impoverished friends around the world. Are you prejudiced against people from Chad, Romania, Cambodia, Peru....? It appears from you statements that Mexicans have a special claim on the American Dream. There was this war in the 1840's. There was this treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo. There was a corrupt Mexican President. That ship has sailed.
Regardless of your feelings, Mexico has taken advantage of the United States by sending their poor and unskilled here, the overwhelming majority of them uninvited. The result has been lower wages, unsafe working conditions, and unemployment for our own low-skilled workers. Friends don't do that to each other.
Flip Flopping | 12:07 p.m. June 17, 2008
I attended a cottage meeting with Jason Chaffetz in March 2008 before the neighborhood caucuses. He told us all about the guest worker plan and the fact that he would be in favor of a "pathway to deportation", or a grace period to get their affairs in order before being deported.

If we're going to get upset about people whose positions have changed, I would suggest we should aim our ire at Congressman Cannon. How many policies did he vote for that he now claims he opposes?

Amnesty
No Child Left Behind
Medicare Prescription Drug Plan
Economic Stimulus Package
Earmarks that are not transparent
The biggest budget in US history (which he voted against several times, but ultimately voted to send to the president. Only the last vote matters)

Even if Chaffetz had flip-flopped (which I can't see that he has) it wouldn't hold a candle to Mr. Cannon's history of blatantly saying one thing and doing another.
sakibaba | 12:08 p.m. June 17, 2008
Looks like nobody wants a solution here. Its either left or right but as history has proven "solution always comes form the center."
We need a step by step approach:
1.1st fix the legal immigration which is backloged by 6-7 years prompting people to jump line or fall out of status to begin with.
2.Build the fence and put in place a workable guest worker program with background checks and verification.
3. Allow the people from within the country and outside to apply on a first come basis.
4. Deport those who do not comply but with a carrot that they will be allowed to apply from their homelands and not debarred so there is some incentive for them to even decide to go back.
Anyways since the extremists have taken hold of the agenda on both sides nothing is going to happen and big business loves it as they get what they want:"cheap labor with no rights:modern day version of slavery."
regards
Sakibaba
Vote Early! | 12:21 p.m. June 17, 2008
As I cast my ballot today (walked right in, zero lines, love early voting!) and saw the two names for congressman for the third district there really was no question. I could vote for a self loving opportunist who will do or say anything, with his views never being the same one delegate meeting to the next, to be in the public's eye. Or I could vote for maybe not the most polished of congressman but most assuredly a good congressman who works hard for the people of the third district(where he lives!).

All you ABC's really need to get over your dislike for Cannon for whatever reason and really look at who the alternative is. Jason would get eaten alive in Congress and quickly become someone who would alienate everyone and give Utah the extremist reputation not to mention just be a horrible Congressmen able to accomplish nothing. Needless to say I cast my ballot for Chris Cannon along with the thousands of others who have enough sense to see right through Chaffetz smug persona.
dave4197 | 12:46 p.m. June 17, 2008
Let me try to educate you by a comparison. Our northern border is relatively orderly and open. But our southern border has problems.
The difference? Race, language, perceived expense, perceived education level. Please show me more. Because those differences, and the results, prove my case that this whole argument is about hating Mexicans. No I'm not from the consulate, and don't try to execute me as the messenger, or call me names. Nellie, and others like you, have to explain better your intolerance for Mexican immigration. It's not about the other 4 billion or so other people on the earth. It is about selfishness amid opulence. It is about intolerance amid diversity.

If you don't like what I say, just wait a while. The next administration and congress will move to reform immigration laws and rules. I would obviously reform them more than you, nellie and other haters, but they will be reformed. So go out and meet your soon to be neighbors. Bienvenidos amigos del sur. Bienvenidos a nuestra paiz.
Pro-Chaffetz | 12:47 p.m. June 17, 2008
Oh, I'm definitely pro-Chaffetz, not ABC. I had to read all the way to the bottom of your post to see who you meant, 'cause frankly, when you talk about flip-flopping, it's Cannon who's been doing it to beat the band. Work hard for "his" people? How would he know? He won't talk to any of them.
Jason's message has been 100% consistent in the 4 months I've been really paying attention. Catch and deport (jason's phrase, btw, not Cannon's), guest worker program that ends in people returning home, remove the freebie benefits - it's been 100% consistent. He never advocated wholesale deportation. That's a totally unrealistic option. Someone told me - like you - to just "hold my nose and vote" for cannon at the state convention. Why would I choose to vote for someone who is ineffective, inconsistent and totally out of touch? I chose then and will choose again to vote for Jason Chaffetz.

Oh, and Jason eaten alive? Hardly. You continue to underestimate the man. He is VERY well prepared and will hit the ground running in January.
TheActuary | 12:49 p.m. June 17, 2008
Giving credit where credit is due--finally the DNews has a picture of Chaffetz as the default. I think that makes the total of 10-1.

Now onto the never ending debate about where Chaffetz lives. We all agree that when you think of the third district, you think of Utah County. Isn't Alpine in Utah County? I live on the West side of Salt Lake County. You're telling me that it would be better for someone like myself to represent the 3rd district who rarely goes past the point of the mountain just because of some arbitrarily drawn boundaries? Or would it be better for someone who actually lives in Utah County to represent you? I disagree entirely with the premise that you have to live in the district to represent them, but I just want to give you "Chaffetz" doesn't live in the district people something to think about.
Stewart | 1:11 p.m. June 17, 2008
Yes Cannon has learned to "talk the talk" probably taught to him by Matt Throckmorton, but this doesn't mean that he has changed. He is still a co-signer of the AgJobs bill which is a wide open invitation to as many immigrants as would like to come. However it doesn't stand the smell test since it would include everything from picking fruit, to selling hamburgers at McDonnalds, hamburgers contain agricultural products. By the way H-2A visas for temporary farm labor is unlimited in the number.

Cannon is in the tank for employers and the Chamber of Commerce as well as LaRaza and MALDEF. If he is so involved in the illegal immigration issue, why isn't he a member of the bi-partisan House Immigration Reform Caucus? Why does he not understand that flooding the unskilled labor market with illegal aliens depresses wages for the citizens and legal workers? Why does he think not paying a fine is not amnesty if illegal aliens still get to keep the prize.

By the way, it is not necessary "deport them all," taking away the opportunity to work would do the trick, and then we can deport the criminals.
chuckles55 | 1:24 p.m. June 17, 2008
No fear. Once the Democrats take over in November/January, they will come up with viable, sane and sensible solutions to these problems that the Republicans have only been using as political fodder for election purposes.
Whoa, Nellie | 1:35 p.m. June 17, 2008
Comparing Mexico with Canada will reveal our discrimination and hatred toward Mexico. Green Cards (LPR) issued in the last 10 years: Canada- 158,572. Mexico- 1,651,460.
How about I-94 temp visas in the last 9 years: Canada- 2,018,482. Mexico- 39,611,595.
I see your point davd. We've sure been unfair to Mexicans. (By the way, the Canadians don't even show up in the illegal aliens estimates.)
How about the Duke University Assimilation Index?
Canada- 54 points. Mexico- 13.
I can't think of any measure (potential for job creation, use of welfare services, crime, housing overcrowding...) where Mexico outshines Canada.
I know you think it is OUR FAULT that these figures come out this way. Your sense of entitlement is part of the problem. Immigrants should be well sponsored and/or self-sustaining. Davd obviously disagrees with that notion.

I can see it's a weekday and the Cannon staff is hard at work commenting on blogs in an attempt to keep their jobs. Nice to 'see' you BBKing (aka paid Cannon staffer).

There's a reason that the vast majority of people who have had the chance to hear from both Chaffetz and Cannon chose Chaffetz. I've been hearing about Chaffetz 'Pathway to Deportation' for the last year and the message has been consistent.

The flip-flopper is Cannon. And not just on immigration. His current campaign commercial is full of wild claims not supported by the voting record he is supposedly so proud of. Say one thing, vote another. That's the most consistent thing about him.

Cannon doesn't care about what we think because he's owned by special interests groups- not Utahns. 90% of his support comes from out-of-state. It's obvious where his loyalty would have to be once elected- the same place it's been for many, many years- to those with the cash.
No longer for Cannon | 2:56 p.m. June 17, 2008
Here is another reason to vote against Congressman Cannon. Some of you may remember this about lobbyist Jack Abramoff associate David Safavian who was Cannons Chief of Staff. Does corruption come to mind to any of you? So my congressman was sponsoring Bills that were favorable to the Indian Gambling Industry and his Chief of Staff also worked for those same interests and I am supposed to believe it was sure coindidence? This comes from todays front page of the SL Trib.

U.S. court: New trial for former Cannon aide in
Abramoff scandal

Safavian served as Rep. Chris Cannon's chief of staff from January 2001 to May 2002, when he left to take the GSA post. During Safavian's tenure with the Utah Republican, the congressman took positions that helped several of Safavian's former clients, including the online gaming industry, telecommunications firms, a media giant and an Indian tribe. A Cannon spokesman has said the two simply agreed on those issues.
After Safavian's conviction, Cannon wrote a letter asking a judge for leniency for his former aide.

Chris is RIGHT | 3:03 p.m. June 17, 2008
I do not know what the people are talking about when they say that Cannon has changed his opinion...

In 2001 I spoke with Chris and listened to his ideas, which were the same as mine... I told him that the only way to handdle the foreign worker situation is to make them legal, and do so by excisting laws that would demand that they go outside of the US and apply for entrance back. This is what they have done in Germany with 5 million Turks who are in the country legally and pay taxes, obey laws etc. After their work assignments are over, or when they desire to return to Turkey, they return.
This is all done legally and dignity of the people is honored instead of the whole country being part of a shameful practice that ALL see, but do nothing about it.
Chris Cannon was right in 2001 and he is fighting for the ONLY way this issue can be handled.

Cannon's record proves him to be too favorable toward open borders and illegal immigration for my liking, despite how he may be presenting himself these days. I'm eager for a more solid conservative than Cannon to represent me in Congress. Chaffetz has my vote on June 24th.

Its time for cannon to go. All he has been is a water boy for the republican party and president bush. When we have to argue and try and persuade them to do the will of the people they represent, its time for them to go. He does not represent utah. If he did, he would not be pushed into a primary election. He has lost the last two republican conventions. The only reason he has been reelected is some people follow like sheep. The delegates at the convention are a whole lot more informed than the average voter.

But i think this time around things will be different. Most everyone i talk to are unhappy with cannon, and for good reason.

good luck jason

My, my. Just a hand full of Jason supporters using different names today.

I thought the easiest way to attack the credibility of todays organized Chaffetz event is to look for the easiest one to debunk.

I called Matt Throckmorton and asked him a few questions. First, about him spending his campaign in his basement communicating on the internet. He laughed in saying that his house only had one floor, so no basement to work out of. He did tell me that his campaign was fractured which required him to work with volunteers on the road. He noted that he personally helped get out over 25,000 door to door pieces and 750 yard signs over the last two weeks, that UFIRE people dropped the ball on. That was a big part of the split between he and UFIRE.

I then asked about him taking money from Cannon right after the campaign. He challenged me to find one penny in the FEC. Jacob did pay him for consulting in 2006 but nothing from Cannon.

And the Cannon Committee didn't begin in 2004 but 2005.

So you made four allegations, all four completely wrong. That leaves everything else junk.

Vote Cannon!
BBKing | 5:02 p.m. June 17, 2008
This is just laughable!

It is amazing, this is our very own little Arkansas moment.

Think about this. Chaffetz has attacked Cannon for not doing enough on enforcement and running bills like the Agjobs Guest Worker Visa.

Now Jason is attacking Cannon for only doing enforcement and doing nothing like a guest worker visa.

Can anyone see that Utah has there very own little Bill Clinton on our hands? How can Jason attack him for both? Both coming and going?

So first Chris is worthless on the border, and way too much amnesty. Then Chris is just focused on the border and not enough amnesty.

Jason is a pathological liar who is doing more than flip-flopping. He is challenging the very notion that the sun rises in the morning. And we have a few diehards who have bought into it.

Jason has proposed amnesty for 20 million illegal aliens in such a way that will not work; that does not require a background check, criminal review, health care assessment, no fine, not even a fee for services! Nothing!

Basically, come to America and Jason is going to give you a visa. All 20 million plus!

And you're buying it! WOW!

Wow-89 comments. Is it Cannon or Illegal Immigration?Or are they the same? For those of you like davd4194, Jussi and others who don't get it, I will solve the puzzle for you-no charge, free.
1) Border fence has limited results. Works good near populated areas but only makes the Coyotes and Drug Runners go to other locations or use other means.
2) The real solution is--Jail Time for CEOs who hire Illegals. When President Carter got religion and declared by order that American Companies could not pay off(make under the table payments or pay "agent fees")and put a few Oil Company CEOs in jail, American Companies doing business in the Persian/Arabian Gulf went from #1 to about #15 on the list of $ contracts-in-hand. Even Brazil, who previously couldn't find the Gulf on a map, was ahead of American Companies. The Japanese and Germans were toasting each other with Champagne and Caviar. I had to go to work for Arabian, German, Brazilian and Colombian compainies. After all, what fat cat CEO at age 62, with zillions in stock options wanted to spend his retirement in jail. None. No job, cut off benefits-they will self deport. Problem solved.

In the last days good will be evil, up will be down, right will be wrong AND

Chaffetz will first attack Cannon for not doing enough on the border and only doing bills on the visa...

THEN Chaffetz will attack Cannon for only doing stuff on the border but not doing anything on the visa.

I think we can tell when Chaffetz is lying. His lips are moving.

I agree that he is challenging us that the sun even rises in the morning. And Jason's lies become even bolder when he knows that you know he is lying.

I have read even on this list that his supporters know he is lying and they know he is offering amnesty but they hate Cannon so bad they don't care.

Well I do care!

Cannon has supported both border enforcement and visa reform, it's called Comprehensive Reform, and they attacked him for that. Bottom line, Chaffetz and the ABC people will attack him no matter what.

Chaffetz really is a Dukakis type northeastern liberal.

I'm appalled that anyone would even fall for it but we do have the PT Barnum quote about fooling some people all the time.

Cannon yes!

For those of you who want to show compassion in this matter, I would suggest sending donations to Internation Aid Organizations. It's not fair to expect the American Taxpayer to pick up the tab(of about 200-300 Billion per year) for benefits for Illegals while the big Corporations reap the profits. I personally send to Relief Organiztions that I worked with in Sudan where there are some REAL poor people. Maybe forego Christmas spending this year and send that $1200 to ease your conscience. Or if you are hung up on Mexico(which has the 14th largest economy in the world and is fifth in Oil Production in the world), the government has a Dos Por Uno program that goes to provide jobs. That way you won't be breaking the laws of the USA by aiding and abetting people to come to our country illegally like most of our politicans do. Or better have our government lean on Mexico to provide jobs with the oil money instead of sending it to personal Swiss numbered accounts.

BB, give it a break, man. YOU claim Jason is too far right and too far left. You claim he wants amnesty for 20 million (whatever - apparently you're unable to comprehend the simple explanations that have been given about 20 times) and you also claim that he supports concentration camps (again - another blatant distortion). Talk about trying to have it both ways!! Better go polish up the old resume - you'll have some job searchin' to do.

I've got to stop reading BBKing. How do some people sleep at night?

Please produce the quote where Jason Chaffetz argues that we need "more amnesty" in this country. That's your version of what he said and it bears no resemblance to his actual position whatsoever.

BBKing's strategy is to attribute to Jason Chaffetz positions he never took, then to knock down the strawman. There's a HUGE difference between Cannon's version of a guest worker program and Jason's. Cannon's Ag Jobs bill rewards lawbreakers with citizenship. Chaffetz offers a pathway to deportation that never results in citizenship unless a person applies from their country of origin - along with all the people who didn't break the law.

If you really want to persuade people to vote for Cannon, maybe you should see if you can come up with a legitimate argument that doesn't require you to distort the truth or to misrepresent Cannon's actual voting record. We've seen what he voted for. Amnesty, NCLB, farm subsidies, massive numbers of earmarks. You can't change that.

BBKing | 6:05 p.m. June 17, 2008
So when in doubt go after the messenger.

Chaffetz has campaigned on both sides of the fence. He campaigned on Cannon supporting amnesty and doing nothing for the border. Now he is campaigning on Cannon doing nothing for visa reform (as he is calling it now) and spending all his time on the border.

It is Chaffetz that is all over the map on this. How do I sleep at night? Quite well until I think of you intentionally distorting every aspect of Cannon you can.

This is like your attacks on him passing no legislation. When it is pointed out that he has passed almost as much legislation as Bennett, Matheson and Bishop combined then you attack him for not passing meaningful legislation.

You've attacked him for doing nothing on energy. When it is pointed out the massive land swaps he has done for the School Trust Land resulting in massive mineral leases, you then attack him for not doing enough.

You attack him for amnesty and no borders.

Now all borders and now visa.

Chaffetz's plan is a massive amnesty. He gives visas to 20 million illegal-aliens with no background checks or fees at all. That's amnesty!

BBKing NOT | 6:36 p.m. June 17, 2008
No more Cannons, Leavitts, Mathesons, etc. Let's end the Republican inbreeding in our state and start being a voice for change so desperately needed in Washington.

Dear Mr. Chaffetz: Please promise you will stay no longer than three terms in office.

Dear Mr. Cannon: You had your turn and blew it, please go home.
Chaffetz Convert | 6:48 p.m. June 17, 2008
Someone just emailed me a link that has Chris Cannon receiving an award from a group called MALDEF. I heard this for myself and Cannon states...
"We love immigrants in Utah. And we don't oftentimes make the distinction between legal and illegal. In fact I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a drivers license based on the matricula consular and of that I am proud."
Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah), MALDEF award ceremony, June 6, 2002
My question is how can a Congressman be strong against illegal immigration or amnesty when he makes statements such as these?
After reading and hearing this, I am angry because I feel like Chris Cannon has been less than truthful to the voters in the 3rd Disrict. HE no longer represents me. It is time to replace him.

I will go down tommorow and cast my vote for Chaffetz.

Robert H | 7:10 p.m. June 17, 2008
BBKing Not, you can't refute anything that BBKing says so you skip it and just proclaim a whole host of sinful people and plan to vote for Chaffetz.

Of course vote your conscience but please don't try to convince others that Chaffetz is not supporting an amnesty. It meets every criteria your crew has ever bashed on.

You want Chaffetz to promise to only stay for 6 years. Noble. He has been so inconsistent in this campaign I honestly wouldn't care what he promises I won't trust him.

If you want thoughtful enforcement vote Cannon. If you want smart visa reform vote Cannon. If you want policies that are morphing almost daily vote Chaffetz.
