I wanted Matt T. in 2002, but by 2004 he was out of control re: immigration. I didn't want Matt T then.

Chris has not been a total wimp re: immigration, but he has been the candidate of choice consistantly for the illegal immigration lobbyists. He can say what he wants, but out of the 2 GOP and the 1 Democrat, Chris is the most wimpy on this issue.

I have no problem with temp worker visas, but they should not be used as a tool to get someone that come here without permission in the 1st place to ever have a chance of getting citizenship, or even staying.

There are 3 options
1. Deport them all
2. Have worker visas for some
3. make all of them legal.

You aren't going to find someone 100% for either of the 3, they have some blend. Cannon wants to allow people that are here without any permission in the 1st place a chance to stay, an possibly be citizens.
Jason doesn't. Jason wants to fix the legal immigration first, Cannon says he is for fixing the borders first, but he hasn't delivered.

Every two years around this time, Cannon seeks to convince voters that he is tough on immigration. I'm curious why the reported don't mention the MALDEF award Cannon one for his support of illegal aliens and the acceptance speech he gave there which mentioned how in Utah we don't make a distinction between legal and illegal immigrants and how he was proud that Utah was among the first States in the nation to offer driver licenses to illegal aliens?

I don't put much stock in what Throckmorton says any more, since he has received money from Cannon after losing to him in 2004.

Here's an anology to Cannon's "pay a fine" idea for illegals. Let's say you've been waiting in line for a couple days to see the new Hobbit movie on opening day. Right before the movie starts a bunch of people get in front of you, enough people where it looks like you will either be in the front row, or not able to get into the theater. If Cannon were the usher he would offer to make things right by collecting $1.00 from each line jumper, but allow them to stay in line ahead of you.
Change is good in this case... | 1:16 a.m. June 17, 2008
Cannon has had long enough to fix immigration and lower energy costs. Time for a change in Washington of the whole lot.

The Republicans implode, and I don't mind at all. What a scam getting middle-income people, many in Utah with large families, to vote for them. Happy with your gas prices? The mortgage mess? 4000 dead and 1 trillion dollars in Iraq? Not to mention immigration flip-flops...

Enough. Dump Cannon just for the change.
BBKing | 5:21 a.m. June 17, 2008
There are lies, dang lies and then Chaffetz supporters.

Chaffetz has totally moderated his position on the issue. He has gone from his lovely tent facilities for all illegal aliens to now wanting to give amnesty visas for all 20 million in the US. Actually, that is not moderating that is called flip flopping.

And prove Throckmorton has taken money from Cannon. I heard that two years ago and asked him directly. He pointed me to FEC reports where he actually consulted with the John Jacob campaign early on. The claims that Cannon has paid him is just another lie used by those who are charter members of the ABC club, Anybody But Cannon.

And since 2004 what has Cannon done? He has voted for over 1,000 miles of fence and barriers. He has voted for thousands of new border patrol agents. He has voted for technology and UAVs on the border. He has voted for E-verify. He has voted for the National Guard on the border. He has voted for every tough measure that has been on the table to vote for.

Bottom line this entire campaign involves the I-hate-Chris-Cannon crowd and a world class opportunist (Chaffetz).
Robert H | 5:30 a.m. June 17, 2008
I like the analogy on the line jumper. And it works perfectly in this race though you haven't been reading the candidates positions.

Cannon imposes fines and fees that total in the thousands of dollars and his guest worker visa applies to less than 2 million people. They also have to go through a health care screening and criminal back ground checks. Fail those, not pay any fines and you don't get a temporary visa. And no path to citizenship. You get to the back of the line on that.

Chaffetz's plan? NO fines! No background checks! No health care screenings! Nothing! And it applies to 20 million people. How is that getting tough on the issue? That is the loosest guest worker amnesty visa ever proposed.

And considering the realities of immigration his visa would be the green light for massive illegal immigration. Go to America illegally and get Jason Chaffetz's amnesty guest worker visa. You don't have to pass background checks, health care screenings or even pay a fine. Just show up and get a visa.

And he wants to create a 2nd class citizenship. So he is planning on giving them citizenship, just not full citizenship. AMNESTY!
garyorem | 5:42 a.m. June 17, 2008
Cannon is a loose cannon ball.

On the issue of Illegal immigration, there is only one definition of illegal. Illegal is illegal. By its very definition, someone is getting away with what they shouldn't and it is always at the expense of someone else. One can not say it doesn't hurt anyone else. It does. Cost the USA plenty in cost.

We have tried amnesty before, but then didn't close the borders. So we have another 12-20 million here illegally.

How can you move 12-20 million in front of every other legal person that is waiting or wants to apply legally to come here? It has taken almost 5 years to get my wife from a foreign country here legally. Millions from her country would love to come legally, why reward illegals before those trying legally. Get this, only my wife was approved , not her brother, mother, father , uncles or aunts or friends. if she had had children and they were to old they wouldn't have qualified to come either.

With illegals they break all the rules, bring themselves and as many as possible both extended family and friends. The law breakers are rewarding several generations illegally.
IM | 5:57 a.m. June 17, 2008
Matt hasn't received any money from Cannon at all. That's ridiculous.

Thank you Mr. Cannon for being consistent. That's a stark contrast to your opponent Mr Chaffetz. I know that I can look Cannon in the eye and get it straight - no wishy washy stands.
Liz | 6:01 a.m. June 17, 2008
Cannon is exactly on with this one. Chaffetz doesn't understand the issue well enough to take a solid position. How in the world are you going to deport all those people. As if they'll come forward and self-deport
Change is good | 6:27 a.m. June 17, 2008
The pathway to change is a vote for Chaffetz. The Wshington fat-cats have to go. Bye-bye Chris.
James | 6:38 a.m. June 17, 2008
Hey Gary of Orem, don't look now but you are getting S-N-O-O-K-E-R-E-D!

You have given a real tough line in the sand about amnesty but you haven't bothered to listen to what Chaffetz is saying. You are stuck in the past man! You are going off of what Chaffetz said in the convention. This is the new and improved Chaffetz. This is the guy trying to appeal to the primary voters.

Chaffetz is offering a visa to everyone in America illegally. That is up to 30 million of them if Bear-Sterns is correct. 30 million illegal aliens get the Chaffetz Guest worker visa.

And the best part is, Chaffetz doesn't require a fee, a criminal background check, not even a health screening. I mean nothing! They just get the visa.

And what problem is Chaffetz solving?

Remember when Bush first proposed his guest worker visa, which was MUCH tougher than Chaffetz's? Remember how illegal immigration tripled! Chaffetz makes Bush look like Scrooge on this one.

No fines, no fees, no criminal background checks, no health screenings. Just a job sponsor. Hey, give me $500 and I'll get you a forged document that says you work for the Pope.

S-N-O-O-K-E-R-E-D!
LEGAL immigration woes | 6:38 a.m. June 17, 2008
Jason Chaffetz is the only candidate who consistently talks of fixing the legal immigration problems as well. You couldn't realistically have any of the above options A, B or C without a fix to getting here legally. Arc is right - no one can be an all-or-nothing kind of guy with those options - that's just unrealistic and not workable. The US used to have a functioning guest worker program - people would come, work, and go home. It wasn't until we started handing out all kinds of freebies AND making it remarkably difficult to get here legally that we saw the huge upswing in illegal immigration.
Oh, and Cannon having a "perfect" record on immigration? Right. Just go watch the KUED debate - it's online - and watch Mr Cannon dodge the direct question of why he missed an important vote on immigration but was there for the vote before and the vote after. So he could claim a "perfect record", of course.
Now we can sit back and wait for the Cannon supporters to cry either amnesty or concentration camps. Whatever. Voters are smarter than that.
Dixie Dan | 6:50 a.m. June 17, 2008
Why doesn't Cannon support the the 1986 Immigration Reform act passed by Congress that is one of President Reagan's greatest accomplishments? We don't need new laws, we need to enforce the one's we already have. Hasn't Cannon frequently stated that he is a "Reagan Republican"?
Des News got it right | 6:52 a.m. June 17, 2008
"Chaffetz has been steadfast in his stance". Yup - it's Cannon who wants to appear tough, votes for some 1000 miles of fence (and who seriously thinks that is doing a dang thing?!) but accepts awards from groups like MALDEF. BBKing, you're sounding like a broken record. What are you going to do next week when Jason's won? You days will be so free. You act like none of Jason's supporters can think for themselves, that we can't research voting records and compare them to mailers, that we can't read what Mr cannon himself has said the other 50 weeks of the year, year after year. Polling "told him" that energy, gasoline prices and immigration are important, hence a new bill introduced and an anti-immigration mailer out within two weeks of a vote. How convenient.
Too bad we're NOT the sheeple you love to portray us as, but actually thinking folks and there are a LOT of us that think it's time for Chris to retire.

Just Another View | 7:13 a.m. June 17, 2008
Call it amnesty, call it wheelbarrow, call it corn flakes...get off the symantics!

Do not allow anybody who can't PROVE legal U.S. residency (Citizenship, current visa ETC.) ANY benefit; no employment, no education, no housing, no medical care (beyond EMS...an ethical thing with me), absolutely nothing. Don't give them something to be here for and they won't come. Those already here will go back.

Just a thought.........
Joe Schmoe | 7:37 a.m. June 17, 2008
I have said for years that deportation will be the beginning of the end for the economy.

The politicians have never understood this and never will. The economy WILL come to a grinding hault.

If they succeed with deportation, good luck getting a house built, getting your yard installed, getting your produce harvested and getting a Big Mac for that matter!

Like I said.....DEAD ECONOMY!
ross58 | 7:39 a.m. June 17, 2008
Actually, if you bother to read and or simply listen, Jason DOES have a plan. His promotes the identification of, registration of and DEPORTATION of illegal immigrants as their only pathway to citizenship. Does that involve issuing a TEMPORARY work visa? Yes. Is that Amnesty? I DON'T REALLY CARE, as long as the end result is solving the illegal immigrant problem. Jason's plan is multifaceted including identification, registration, E-Verify, border security, and more; and too, a "Tent City" incarceration of those involved in criminal acts like robbery and murder and rape, (Here's your big chance to jump up and scream, "Yeah but their being here is an illegal act too!" To which ol' Ronnie Reagan would reply, "...now there you go again...").

Chris has a plan too, but his has been a work in progress for several terms now...AN UNSUCCESSFUL work in progress. Nice fence though...not built to specifications, but it's a nice fence and somewhat effective in San Diego, but what about the rest of the plan? I think it is impotent, and I think it perpetuates the problem.

I like the Chaffetz plan better.
CANNON QUOTE | 7:40 a.m. June 17, 2008
"We love immigrants in Utah. And we don't oftentimes make the distinction between legal and illegal. In fact I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a drivers license based on the and of that I am proud."

Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah), MALDEF award ceremony, June 6, 2002
DBG | 7:43 a.m. June 17, 2008
People are taking single issues rather than looking at the overall picture of Cannon. He's got to go! He's had 7 years to stand up for something but didn't. He's too easily swayed the opposite direction. He's rubber stampped every Bush Policy which has created the mess we are in today (NCLB for example). This is "big government", something Cannon claims to be against. His actions speak louder than words.
Mills Levan | 7:47 a.m. June 17, 2008
The re-election shuffle. Gotta love it. Every two years Cannon and his ilk do the old soft shoe on tough issues. "This is what I said, but THIS is what I meant." And on and on it goes. And on and on it will go unless/until people get off their wallets and begin to hold these clowns accountable.
Sorry, but . . . | 7:46 a.m. June 17, 2008
a stalwart against illegal immigration Chris Cannon is NOT!

I took a guided Capitol tour with one of his staffers last summer at the height of the debate over the Amnesty bill, and discussed the congressman's position at length with said staffer. Congressman Cannon was and is a staunch supporter of amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Vote June 24th | 7:48 a.m. June 17, 2008
The career Republican politicians of Utah have grown fat and lazy. Can anyone disagree that we either need a conservative revival in the party or a new conservative party in Utah? Chris Cannon is an inarticulate representative of conservatism and the poster boy for what is wrong with the Republican Party in general. As the national Democrats have moved further left to amoral socialism, Chris and his Republican congressional buddies have moved to fill the tax and spend, pro-immigration hole they vacated. The only way we hold them accountable for their failures these past eight years is to elect new representatives. Tell your friends and neighbors to vote June 24th!
Milo P Otis | 8:12 a.m. June 17, 2008
I want a Democrat in District Three. I want somneone living in District Three to represent me. Jason would be better for a Dem to run against. It's time for Cannon to go bye-bye. Bye-bye, so long, farewell Mr. Cannon.
So True! | 8:12 a.m. June 17, 2008
Chaffetz said. "He gets tough on immigration about two weeks before an election. That's it."

So true. So true. So true.

Cannon is a fair weather politician who tries to push the hot buttons only at the right time to get re-elected. And the neocons play right along with him.

Chaffetz gets my vote!

Cannon's voting record is clear. He voted left for the fence vote, and returned 10 minutes later to vote again.

He's paid for thousands of dollars in polling to know what to say, so he's saing what we want to hear. Chaffetz does no polling and is already saying the right things.

If you want to find out what Jason thinks re: immigration, go to his website. He hasn't changed his steps for fixing immigration since he started running. That doesn't mean he doesn't listen, but he had a good plan before he started running. Cannon wants to be all things to all people. This should not be a single issue campaign. Jason is a business owner that can stay in budget. Cannon is a lawyer that shows he can't, even with his own campaign. The choice is obvious, fire the cannon, vote for Jason.
Who is being represented? | 8:18 a.m. June 17, 2008
I can't believe a person can run in a district he isn't required to live in. If he is representing his neighbors he is much more likely to understand their views. At least when Hillary decided to run in New York she did take up residency there. What's with Caffetz - he can just go out and pick whatever opponent he wants? No wonder things are so messed up.

Cannon,
Another Real Reagan Republican?

Ronald Reagan began creating most of the problems we experience today. His Liberal actions may well bring about destruction of the American Dream.

Reagans gave us:
His Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act producing the largest tax INCREASE in American history to that date. That began the massive up-swelling of US Federal Budget and expenditures which continues today.
Federal gasoline tax increases, costing citizens an additional $5.5 BILLION.
$165 BILLION Social Security tax INCREASE.
Promised to abolish both Education and Energy Departments. Both actually DOUBLED during his Presidency.
INCREASED Social Security spending from $179 billion to $269 billion.
INCREASED farm subsidies from $21.4 billion to $51.4 billion.
INCREASED Medicare spending from $43.5 billion to $80 billion.
More than DOUBLED federal entitlements -- from $197.1 billion to $477 billion.
DOUBLED Foreign Aid -- from $10 billion to $22 billion.
TRIPLED the federal debt -- from $900 billion to $2.7 TRILLION.

Reagan spoke like a Conservative. He acted surreptitiously as a Liberal to expand his personal power, prestige, wealth and legacy. Reagan lied to us all. Ronald Reagan: the FATHER of neo-Conservatism.

We dont need more dishonest Republicans.

Boot Cannon; and all the rest!

The only way we are going to stop illegal immigration is to hold the employers accountable. No laws will ever work. We know this because there are 20 to 30 million illegal immigrants in the USA and all kinds of laws are against them being here. When we start holding employers responsible illegal immigration will stop. No jobs, no illegal immigrants. Side note, someone please explain to me how driver licenses for illegal immigrants makes us safer, or makes any since at all?

To Joe Schmoe: The argument that the economy will stop if we deport these laws breakers is OPINION, not fact. (and bad opinion at that,) Seems democrats have a problem with factual information, Global warming anyone?

Jason lives in Alpine, which typically is in the 3rd district. He is 2 miles outside the current line, but in the 3rd district when the line moves again. That said, Merrill Cook has run in the 2nd district, the 3rd, and back to the 2nd district. No one cared, buy of course I was glad Cook didn't get out of convention the last two times. Jason was within 9 votes of winning with 60%.

Senators represent a state, which boarder usually doesn't change. US reps represent a boundary that we keep moving in order to get rid of a democrat. The 3rd district line has moved all over the place. Blame it on the Utah GOP legistlative leaders. Don't blame it on Jason.

Who is Chaffetz? All he does is attack Cannon, but he still leaves me with too many unanswered questions.

What is his educational background? Why was he in charge of Dukakis' campaign in Utah? Why only 8 monhts as Huntsman's Chief of Staff? Why is he not running in his own district against Matheson?

Bob G | 8:33 a.m. June 17, 2008
What ever comments are coming from the Cannon camp are not his words, he is too illetrate to make a comprehensive statement. Cannon puts on whatever hat meets his needs and has no real cares or issues with keeping the illegals here. All the congressmen and senators have been coerced and scared in to beliving that our economy can't be supported by american workers. How wrong they are. Cannon and Chaves are both losers on the same course, preserve the illegals and avoid deportating them by force. Nor do they believe in border control and enforcement of our national soverignty to protect americans and our lives. No visas should be granted until they return to Mexico and get permission and medical checkups before entering this country. Cannon must go and Chaves must not get there, we need a third choice that will represent Utah and America's citizens.
jim | 8:36 a.m. June 17, 2008
Cannon is only for stopping illegal immigration when he is running for re-election. When he defeated matt throckmorton in the primary that very day he was on the radio with his buddy tony yappais and said "we need these people here to hold down prices" and he was speaking of illegals. Cannon speaks out of both sides of his mouth. Just depends on who he is talking to at the time.

Illegals are paid poorly and then they go home after work and use all of the social benefits that they can. "free" health care, "free" education for their children, and all of the other social impacts on our system.

I should not have to subsidize my competition, nor have my wages suppressed by illegals.

Im voting for jason

Same old story | 8:58 a.m. June 17, 2008
This is is a lazy story that has been written probably a dozen times. The news media seems to really want to keep this wedge issue in the public. They are trying to sell papers - where is the Desnews version of immigration reform? They are trying to make the differences seem so dramatic between these two guys and really they aren't. If you look closely they really are quite similar. It seems to be the extreme groups are the ones driving this story and I'm a bit frustrated by the media giving them so much attention when the average joe is more reasonable.

It's not hard to find out information about Chaffetz. Go to his website and go to the long article printed on Sunday in the Provo Daily Herald. He has a degree in communication from BYU. He was "in charge" of helping on a campaign when he was 20 years old. He is open about when he joined the Republican party - some 17 or 18 years ago. (On a personal note, I know I sure didn't have firm political views at age 20 - I had to "grow" into them.)
He spent time as Chief of Staff for Huntsman and left voluntarily. Huntsman said the following: "Jason is a friend and has worked hard over the past two years on my campaign as campaign manager and through the transition into office." and "Huntsman praised Chaffetz for making the transition from running his campaign to running his staff. "He combined campaign leadership with executive branch management that is unprecedented."
Anyway, there's plenty of information out there - it's hardly hiding.
It's time for a change - vote for Jason Chaffetz on June 24th.

Who is Chaffetz? All he does is attack Cannon, but he still leaves me with too many unanswered questions.

Chaffetz attacks Cannon's record in Congress, as any challenger would, but he has never attacked him personally.

What is his educational background?

BS in Broadcast Communications, BYU, 1989

Why was he in charge of Dukakis' campaign in Utah?

His father's first wife is Kitty Dukakis. She asked him to do it and he agreed. He was 20 years old.

Why only 8 monhts as Huntsman's Chief of Staff?

Personal differences, differences in style, seeking a better opportunity, who knows, who cares.

Why is he not running in his own district against Matheson?

Apparently he believes his views are more consistent with voters in the third district than those in the second. After the 2010 census boundaries will change. Why should it matter if a guy calls Mapleton or Alpine his home when he will spend most of his time in Washington anyway. He lives in Utah and that is all that is required. Compare your own views with those of the candidates. Vote for the one that best represents you. Who cares where they are from?

Re: horrible numbers.

Agreed. Should Obama become the Democrat nominee and should he then win the Presidency, the seeds of destruction sown by Reagan the Ripper will be reaped and re-sown to the destruction of the American way of life.

Reagan was a major and early contributor to moving responsibility from the individual to the Government. His Liberal actions which put the lie to his false conservative (cheap) speech must be recognized if we are ever to move away from this path to destruction.

Obama, Hillary or Al Gore in the office of the President will simply build upon the legacy of Reagan, Clinton and the Bushes (they are all fiscal Liberals). With any of them as President we will rapidly approach a financial melt-down.

And, the RINO, Juan McCain is not an appreciably better alternative to Barack, Hillary or Al. Either fiscally or with regards to national sovereignty and boarder integrity.

Further, none of the above have any apparent knowledge of that ancient writing called the Constitution of the United States of America.

I can say with absolute certainty that Throckmorton has received money from Chris Cannon. If you search the FEC filings from 2004, you should see money flowing to Throckmorton shortly after the Republican primary, when Throckmorton sold all of his voter polling information to Cannon.

Incidentally, Throckmorton ran the laziest political campaign ever seen, preferring to remain in his basement, reaching out to voters via the Internet. He would get really ticked off if his volunteer staff or a delegate attempted to arrange a meet and greet event with actual voters.

With a little effort, the outcome in 2004 could have been drastically different. Throckmorton was just using the immigration issue as a wedge to try and defeat Cannon. It appears he doesn't really care about it, since he left UFIRE, the group he helped start shortly after his 2004 defeat and joined Cannon's amnesty task force.
Lots of ??? about Chaffetz | 9:16 a.m. June 17, 2008
I currently work for a company that Chaffetz formerly worked for. I have talked to many people here who know him and worked with him. Not a single one of them like him and would vote for him. They were glad to see him go.
How is Chaffetz going to accomplish anything in D.C. if he can't work with fellow Congressmen? Based on what his former coworkers have told me I don't think he would get much done in Washington. I don't care much for either candidate but I have to go with my gut and not vote for Jason Chaffetz.

Chris Cannon is an absent spokesperson for conservative values or the interests of his district in Utah. Tax and spend? Absent. Illegal immigration? Absent. Energy policy? Absent. Calling the Gore-ites on their Green Scam? Absent. Time for him and his virulent paid staffers to move on. He surely has a number of board positions set up and waiting, but his staff probably wont be so lucky. Bummer of a time to try to find a job, isnt it? Blame your boss and enjoy the fruits of Washington Republican incompetence.
