the closest one was in Arizona (not Utah), and the event is actually becoming a better exposure showcase than Nike Camp (ever since NCAA coaches were banned from attending..)

Now BYU is down (and I do mean down) with the big guys. Morals and standards no longer apply. Money talks.
BBKing | 8:33 a.m. June 15, 2008
How sad. Doing a Nike camp does not make BYU bad. Nor does having a Nike camp make it bad at all. My nephew attended one of these about 8 years back and it was incredible. He ended up with a scholarship and now an education.

I must have missed something here. How is this bad?
Gretzky | 10:03 a.m. June 15, 2008
now all BYU needs is to make the jump to Div. 1 hockey like Notre Dame and then you will see some real sport on campus. outstanding. you can just see it now, a packed mariott center crowd watching BYU ice hockey team play the North Dakota Fighting Sioux or the Wisconsin Badgers. now that would be an EVENT!
KWT | 12:14 p.m. June 15, 2008
Did you say that no coaches are allowed to view this or did you say that just the BYU coaches weren't? If that be the case, how are they seen so they can be candidates for school recruiters?

Why is this important? Because it is one more glimpse for the rest of the world to show that BYU is not some outer space outpost. Eventually, recruiters from BCS school will not be able to perpetuate falsehoods about the Cougars and Mormons, and this can only help BYU.

Hey yewts get ready for your last year as a competitive school with BYU. Coach witt is a scumm bag and a traitor and he will get his as he is fired in 2 years. BYU has beaten you in everything the past 2 years except ladies gymnastics. BYU will finish this year no higher than 5th in the country just like in 96'.
Special K | 7:35 p.m. June 15, 2008
Great for BYU, finally a Nike camp coming to Utah. As for the facilities, don't trash talk too much, I've been to several "big" name schools and BYU & Utah compare with all of them. Where Utah & BYU don't compare is the money the "big" schools have to give to students and put it into the campus... That's where money talks along with the hotness of the co-eds.

Thank you BYU, for keeping the true capitalists living up to their name. Love Pete & Les
Alma the Wiser | 7:50 p.m. June 15, 2008
While Nike will always be one of the big dogs, Under Armour is quickly becoming the apparel brand that high school kids prefer to wear.

Urban Meyer once said kids want two things when they choose a school: Nike apparel and games on ESPN.

Within 5 years the majority of kids will want to go to a school where they can wear Under Armour rather than Nike. Nice switch by the Utes.

Unfortunately, neither Utah or BYU can offer the opportunity to play on ESPN.

re: the man | 9:01 p.m. June 15, 2008
Way to post incognito as a Y fan, you almost had us fooled.

Nice feather in the cap Cougs, anyone posting that Nike camp isn't a good thing for you is talking out of the side of their mouth. Keep setting the standard!
Re: the man | 9:39 p.m. June 15, 2008
Scum(m) bag? Whit? How low can fans go?

I can only hope that type of post does not personify the majority of BYU fans in this state. Ridiculous. And predicting a '96 repeat is almost as foolish. If I remember right that '96 team lost one game that year to Washington. With the current BCS system in place a one loss non-BCS team doesn't touch the top 15.
RE: Re: the man | 10:25 p.m. June 15, 2008
You're right, a lousy 1 loss non BCS team is lucky to be ranked in the top 15. However, this is no "WAC", "MAC", or "Conference USA" team. This is BYU, a team that is top 15 when it has 2 losses. Do the last two years ring a bell?

By the way, BYU had 14 wins that '96 season. Can you name two other college football teams that ever won 14 games in a single season?

you are NOT: the man | 9:44 a.m. June 16, 2008
Kyle is not a traitor at all, he's a great man, former BYU player, and coach, he just chose...

poorly.

But, his loss is BYU's gain because we got Bronco.

I'm waiting for BYU to post an undefeated August/September, before I get too excited about a BCS-busting run.

Pre-season rankings are fun, but rankings are meaningless unti October because nobody really knows how good the teams are.

BYU's toughest test this year could be Utah.
Re: you are NOT: the man | 10:10 a.m. June 16, 2008
Kyle chose the better situation for himself. His personality wouldn't work as well at byU as it does at Utah. Just like BronKo's bishop-toned coach speak works better at byU than it would at Utah.

byU's toughest games this year:

5. Home vs. New Mexico

4. Home vs. UCLA

3. At Washington

2. At Utah

1. At TCU(on a short week)
Fiddler | 10:17 a.m. June 16, 2008
Pre-season rankings are not meaningless at all, they determine how high you could potentially finish at the end of the season if you do all that you can. It's unfortunate that that is the case but it is.

Bottom line, this is just another example of BYU widening the gap between them and Utah in the Athletic world. Goodbye Utah.
RE:Re: you are NOT: the man | 10:46 a.m. June 16, 2008
I agree with you. Kyle picked a place where he is happy. I'm glad we have Bronco and he fits well with the BYU program. I hope Utah and BYU meet undefeated it would be great for the Conference. I hope BYU wins.

I think the hardest games will be in order

1. Washington at Washington
2. Utah at Utah
3. UCLA

Quick Judgement | 11:17 a.m. June 16, 2008
I love these comments on both Whitt and Bronco, But lets remember the Majority of the players over the last few years were not their recruits but those of their predecessors. These next few years will be the chance to judge these coaches because that is when their recruits will have more impact on the field. They are both good coches as much as I can't stand him, Bronco has a record that speaks for himself. However, I think you saw what a great coach Whittingham is last year based on how he took a depleated and broke team and still had a winning year. I look forward to a great college football season.

Go Utes!!!!!

And by the way Cougar fans I would worry about your schedule some tough road games to include the Huskies and Utes. I would really worry about that NORM CHOW run offense and UCLA. Norm isn't to happy with how you all treated him!!!!

Re: The Man

Uhhh, Whit is not a scumbag, nor is he a traitor. He took the job that he felt would be the best fit for him. It all worked out, the Cougs got their man after he went to Utah.

No reason to trash talk here, BYU got a great camp, I'm really not concerned about 1-up'ing the Utes. We are living the good life right now, but let's play a few downs before we start crowning the Cougs BCS anything.
Traitor? | 11:55 a.m. June 16, 2008
Kyle just wants to build a team where there are no personal standards to get in the way. It's a personal choice. Get over it Utah and BYU. It's no longer news.
Keep Kyle | 12:47 p.m. June 16, 2008
We have no reason to trash Kyle and I want him to stay at Utah along with Ludwig forever. The Utes are more easily beaten with them at the helm. I'd love to see them win 8 games a year as long as the Y is not one of them.
Recent Investigation | 1:10 p.m. June 16, 2008
Apparently the NCAA just released news that there are some "scumbag" issues in K. Whittingham's past that have gone unnoticed. They performed a complete investigation on it an found the only scumbag skeletons in K. Whitt's closet was the old BYU uniform up in his attic. Without those few years distorting his mental framework, he would be a perfect coach. Fortunately, the NCAA has forgiven him of these trespasses and will allow him to continue coaching the "best football university in the state" (the NCAA's words, not mine).
Re: Keep Kyle | 1:34 p.m. June 16, 2008
"The Utes are more easily beaten with them at the helm." ???????

Have you watched the last three games? BYU has been the better team coming in to the game all three years and yet . . . .

'05: Backup QB gets his first start and runs all over BYU and the Utes win in OT.

'06: The Utes best QB is redshirting so they are basically playing with a second string QB again and come within one play of beating BYU, again.

'07: The Utes were ravaged by injury and Brian Johnson was playing with a throwing shoulder that was maybe 60% healthy, and still Utah comes within a play of winning the game again.

Kyle and Ludwig are bound to start having healthy teams going into the rivalry game, and when they do, LOOK OUT!

How did this conversation get to Utah bashing? People let's stay on topic please.

"Have you watched the last three games? BYU has been the better team coming in to the game all three years and yet..."

as with most rivalries, "unpredictability" is the watchword, anything can happen.

Utah has often given BYU's best teams fits, even during the '80's, when BYU was unquestionably the better team.

Utah's biggest problem has always been consistancy. Like we saw last season with UCLA and UNLV. No one can explain those two games, yet those same types of games continue happening to Utah year after year.
itake utedeuce | 3:26 p.m. June 16, 2008

Re:Re: Kyle | 1:34 p.m. | 3:54 p.m. June 16, 2008
Kyle gets a pass from me for the last three years of inconsistancy.

Imagine Bronco had to start an 18 year old QB in '05 instead of Beck, a seasoned veteran. They would have finished well below 6-6.

Or in '06 the other Beck had to start while John redshirted and Curtis Brown had graduated. BYU would have been lucky to win 7 games.

Or in '07 Hall misses three games and plays the rest of the year with a seperated throwing shoulder, Collie misses 12 games, Unga misses the whole year, and Aulai misses the whole year. BYU would have finished 6-6 or worse.

Kyle has yet to coach a year in which he is facing little to no adversity. Bronco has had very little adversity the past three years and only has 4 more wins than Kyle. This will be a big year for both programs, but Utah will have the better season. It is time for Kyle and the Utes to start getting some breaks.

As for the UNLV loss, I chalk that up to a lot of young players getting fat heads after stomping on UCLA the week before and then looked past the Rebels.
Inconsistency | 4:41 p.m. June 16, 2008
Imagine if Utah had stopped Harline, imagine if Utah had got Unga to keep his commitment, imagine if utah could stop 4th and 18, imagine a day when utah has a football team again. Imagine, imagine imagine.

Re: Imagine | 1:44 a.m. June 17, 2008
Too funny! I spit my orange juice all over the computer keyboard when I read your poem!
Look at TCU | 6:00 a.m. June 17, 2008
Did anyone else notice that TCU hosted a Nike camp back in April? Kudos to TCU for being awarded the ONLY Nike camp held in the state of TX this year. That is quite a coup for our conference to have two schools hosting camps. If TCU benefits from hosting a camp, they will recruit better in TX and bring more talent into the conference. I'm not sure why every thread about BYU football is turned into a forum on other matters, like KW's virtues as a coach, or which games will be the toughest on BYU's schedule this year. TCU is improving at a faster rate than UT (better exposure, bigger market, better talent pool for recruiting), and having a Nike camp will only make them a tougher opponent in coming years. In all the build up to the Y-U game, let's not overlook TCU, please!
Re: Re: Re: Kyle | 8:28 a.m. June 17, 2008
Imagine if Bronco had lost most of his starting DBs before the '07 season started and ended up having to start 4 walkons.

Or if Bronco had had to begin the season with a brand new quarterback who hadn't taken a snap in a real game since high school.

Or if Bronco had lost the reigning California high school MPV running back to a season-ending injury in fall practice.

Oh wait, that did happen, and Bronco was able to make seamless adjustments using available personnel.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Kyle | 9:46 a.m. June 17, 2008
Please!!! You can't compare those situations to what Utah has dealt with the last three years.

Criddle was on scholarship and was all-MWC last year, and I'm pretty sure that most of the other "walk-ons" had earned scholarships by the time last year rolled around. Let's not pretend byU was playing with a bunch of Rudy Ruettigers in the defensive backfield. They were D1 athletes.

Hall was a Pac-10 QB that had been practicing for a couple of years in college plus he had time on his mission to mature. Brian Johnson was a true sophomore that was only 18 years old. BIG difference between the two.

Who cares if an unproven Freshman RB was injured and out for the season. That would actually mean something if BYU didn't already have Fui, Manase, and Unga. I would like to see what BronKo would be able to do without Unga. My guess for last year: BYU would have been 7-5 at best.

Bottom line: Now that Kyle will be coaching 'his own guys' we will see who has the better coach this year and beyond.
Re: Re:Re: Re: Re: Kyle | 12:40 p.m. June 17, 2008
You can't? Why not? Doesn't Utah have any D1 athletes like BYU Has?

Let's take just a short look. Bronco took over a program after 3 losing seasons. Kyle took over an undefeated program.

Bronco has repeatedly had to rely on unproven frehman players, to fill needs (Unga, to name just one) and non-scholership players (Criddle was non scholership when he made his first start). Not all of the DB's were even playing, let alone on scholie @ the beginning of season, or even by the middle. They were pressed into service as the replacement starters were injured.

Hall was a player with 5 years of rust. Personal maturity does not mean game maturity (ask any of the U's RM's) Johnson had as much recent practice as Hall. Any advantage would have to go to Johnson.

RB's? Fui was injured, and Unga was FRESHMAN. Without Unga, Latu would have probably done about the same. (BYU 11-2)

BYU has suffered injuries and other problems just like Utah has. Hall was playing with an injured shoulder in the Utah game. It showed. He just didn't complain.

I think what Kyle has done doesn't compare to what Bronco has done.

GO COUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Kyle | 1:15 p.m. June 17, 2008
(ran out of words)

Bottom line: When the U has an injury or other adversity, they may or may not be able to deal with it (look at the record; listen to the whining). When the Y has a loss, another well coached player stps up to fill the void. Most of these walk-ons had nothing in their resume' to indicate that they could compete at the D1 level, yet when called upon, they performed admirably against some pretty heavy competition.

Bottomer line: Now that they will be coaching more of their own guys, "we will see who has the better coach this year and beyond."
Re: x 6 Kyle | 1:37 p.m. June 17, 2008
Ha Ha Ha! BYU fans just can't see the forest through the trees.

Kyle took over a team that lost every key starter from an undefeated team: QB, RB, Safeties, Corners, LBs, OL and DL, and WRs. Bronco took over a team that had a lot of returning starters in '05 and had even more returning starters in '06.

The one area that Bronco has had trouble is the secondary, but that still doesn't compare to what Kyle has had to work with.

You said it best, "hall was playing with an injured shoulder in the Utah game. It showed." Brian Johnson was playing with a seperated shoulder for THE ENTIRE SEASON! That is the amazing part. Even with the injuries, Utah won 8 out of their last 9 games!

Unga was a grayshirt and redshirt Freshman, and no, Latu would not have done what Unga did. If he was capable of that, he would average more than half a carry per game.

Hall had two full years of D1 college practice under his belt. Johnson only had one and he had a new OC in his second year. Hall had the same one for 2 years straight.
Re: Kyle xfactor | 2:12 p.m. June 17, 2008
"Kyle took over a team that lost every key starter from an undefeated team:..."

an undefeated team that had no keys injuries during their BCS-busting season.

So, was Urban a good coach, or did he just get lucky? Did he get out of town just in time, or would Utah have been much better if he had stayed? If Urban was such a good coach, why did he leave the cupboard bare?

I like Kyle, but, as a true BlueCoug, I was hoping he would take the Utah job, so we could keep Bronco.

Bottomest line: BYU fans are very pleased with the job Bronco has done in his first 3 years. Are Utah fans as pleased with the job Kyle has done in his first 3 years?
Re: x 6 Kyle | 2:44 p.m. June 17, 2008
BYU didn't lose any key starters after 2006? You are in a fantasy world, my friend. '07 was supposed to be a REBUILDING year, because they lost everybody considered to be of consequence on both sides of the ball. No analyst gave them a chance to be much over mid MWC. BYU has the same adversities as the U. They just handle it better under Bronco.

Keep dreaming. Your arguments are very hollow. I hope the U continues to do well, because it is good for all of us, and because they are a local team to me, but there is no logical reality to any argument at any level that kyle has done better than Bronco.
If you actually believe the arguments you have been making, you must be a liberal. They never use logic in their arguments.
