Doing away with grass in favor for artificial turf kind of takes away some of the spirit of sports. I mean, how are proud kids supposed to show off grass stains from their slides and tumbles if there's no grass? I'm sure the smell of freshly cut lawn is much more invigorating than chemical cleaner, as well.
You lost all credibility when you started your article with "as owner of a sod business......."
Can you say conflict of interest?
You should've just written a letter that said "hello, I own a business and I'm afraid that some of my largest clients are going to switch to the competition. That means I will make less money and I don't think that's fair!" At least it would've been honest.
@Sod Business|8:33 - Actually he just practiced full disclosure - doesn't take away anything from the info he presents - you find a lot of places are replacing artificial turf with real grass, so I think the call to schools to be wary of jumping on the artificial turf bandwagon to be good common-sense.
There, someone with no connections to any sod/grass selling business has said it - does that make it more acceptable to you?
@Sod Business- You'd rather he talked like a politician instead of being upfront on a subject he's knowledgeable about? There's something wrong with telling the truth? I'll work with someone who tells me the truth from the start than someone who covers up the truth. Besides, the facts he stated for sod and against artificial turf are common knowledge. It sounds like you just got up on the wrong side of the bed!
Yes, ideally every school would have perfectly maintained fields and lawns. But that is not the case. Football fields take an INCREDIBLE beating each week, and they only play the game one them! When I was in high school, during gym class we had to play on the football practice field, I twisted my ankle and seriously injured myself at least once a week. The new artificial fields will be safer and allow as much use, by as many sports and teams as can use them.
to anonymous - really? You SERIOUSLY injured yourself at least once a week during gym class playing on the football practice fields? Are you clumsy or what?
As a former player (on grass) and an avid football fan I love field turf. The lines on the field are always visible and during inclement weather the game does not turn into a mud pit. I understand the concern about bacteria, etc and this should be monitored carefully.
Ever seen a dog walk across a football field without doing it's business? I'd bet theres bacteria on natural grass too, especially if you fertilize it.
