Milking the Public

No No No No No No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where do these people get off!!!!!!!!

They are already making WAY MORE than most people around here.

PUBLIC SERVANTS???

Right

Cry babies

Remember the NBA strike when Karl said his multi-million dollars a year wasn't enough because of what Ostertag made?
It doesn't matter if somebody else in a similar job is making more than you. That's the case for most Utah workers when compared to the national average.
Don't expect me to feel sorry for someone that makes twice as much (or more) than I do.

Agree

I agree with "milking the public." I'm retired now, but the last 5 years of my working life was with a special district. Public employees have better insurance benefits and certainly better retirement. But there were many working for that special district who weren't honorable--they signed up for conventions but didn't go, wasting public money--there were too many "company cars." There was other cheating on the job--internet usage, reporting work that wasn't done, sexual harrassment, plus other blatant things that wouldn't be tolerated in private industry. There are too few checks and balances in public life and a lot of entitlement attitudes from workers. It is almost impossible to fire someone for non-performance in that environment. I'm not in sympathy with these employees who think they need a raise when the rest of the country has to deal with what the market will bear.

What????

So a relatively new teacher is making about $30,000 a year. But our poor commissioners are making only $96,000 a year and are underpaid?

There's no conflict of interest here. I need to talk my boss into letting me decide, when and how much my raises will be.

John

Utah county officials are not underpaid. They are way over paid. They make in a year what I made in the past 3 years. and more than most utahans. Utah county officals should reduce there pay by a least a half and more. Than get a feel of whats its is to be a public servant.

Readers

These commissioners, who are feeding at the public trough, knew the salary of the job when they ran for it. If they don't like it, quit or don't run for the position.

Wake up

YES YES YES YES. If you want top caliber people running the biggest business in the county (county goverment)you need to compete with other businesses for their services. If not you get what you pay for. We need the best in those positions.

Another Pay Raise?

They just gave themselves a huge pay raise a couple years ago with the same excuse. I've heard that Utah County employees are paid dismal wages and benefits packages though. I wonder if Utah County employees are on par with their peers within the state?

I think salaries should be indexed to the cost of living within the county, not based on what some other county in another state is paying. We are not trying to lure county commissioners from other states, so the notion of making our salaries competitive with other states is ridiculous.

To Wake Up: Wake Up!

This is an elected position, not a private business. I agree with you on wanting the top people, but the interview in this case is an election, and we know how reliable of an interview the campaign process is don't we? You can pay 1 million dollars a year and you will get the same people running for office. Not everything in the world can be compared to private business nor should it be compared.

Mike

Wake up. Surely you jest. The president of our country makes less than half a million dollars a year, do presidents complain that they are underpaid. City, county and country leaders choose the jobs they do not for the money, but for the glory. If they get greedy, a replacement will take over.

Questions

In the study, were they compared to full or part time commissioners? Utah County's are part time with a big emphasis on the "part". They can't ever be found in their offices except for right before or after a commission meeting.

How does everyone feel about a time clock being put in the county building for them to clock in and out with? Any other employee that failed to show up to work as much as they do would be fired. I've tried several times (various times, various days) to meet with one, any one, and never found any of them in their offices. Too bad I have to work a real job with real hours or I could hang out and see if they ever bother to show up.

Milking the public

Public Servants

So more...

tax hike in the near future?......LOL!!

UC are underpaid - others over

I am not sure if our commissioners are underpaid ... but others MUST be overpaid. Course, it is a cycle ... one gives themselves raises, the other have to match, and soon they are making triple digits.

As a regular county employee, I am quite a ways UNDER the national average for my profession. Some argue "you get better benefits" ... but have you tried to use the PEHP heatlh system? And in today's day and age of moving jobs, I can't say my "retirement" is above average ... there is no saying I will be here that long.

But if the commissioner's want to raise their salaries, how about raising our department budgets instead of giving us UNFUNDED MANDATES instead? Just a thought.
