THANKS, for your article. The hair on the back of my neck always stands up when OLD GLORY, passes by. May God always bless America.

There was a recent amendment to the Flag Code allowing veterans to salute the flag when not in uniform. I'm looking for the supporting reference. If I can find it I'll post another comment.

I'm a rabid Liberal Democrat... and mighty proud of it... especially at the present time. Yes! Liberal Democrats are very patriotic and respecting of the flag , but not in a stupid thuggish way.

When the flag passes in review, I am one of very few individuals in a crowd that takes their hats off and/or puts their hands over their hearts. This in a crowd of religious conservatives and a Republican majority without equal.

When a discussion of the flag comes up I am more inclined to discuss what the flag stands for more than just the piece of cloth called a flag. For me the flag stands for more than its physical/visual value. I despise flag burnings, but have such a respect for what the flag stands for that I won't stomp on 1st Amendment rights simply because I disagree. (There's a reason it's the 1st Amendment.)

When I look at the flag I remember that my grandfather served in both world wars, Uncles in WWII, Dad in Korea, My brother in Nam, and I have 4 sons who've served in the Navy (3, two on Boomers) and one Marines.

Don't ever question my patriotism because I'm Liberal.

I have the flag that was part of my father's funeral in 1980. I fly it whenever I can. It symbolizes not only my love for my country, but also how proud I am of my father's service to our Great Nation.

I am so proud of my mother and father for the example they have shown for their love of country to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I live in a small valley that is probably 90% "religious conservatives" as you call us. When I attend a high school football game, rodeo, or any other community event nearly 100% of the crowd stands, takes off their hats, and puts their hands on their hearts. What an idiotic and broad generalization to claim that most Republicans don't do this. You are wrong and living in your own little world. What a patriot you are.

Here is the law reference I alluded to before:

Public Law No: 110-181 (Sec. 594) "Allows members and veterans who are present but not in uniform during the hoisting, lowering, or passing of the flag to render the military salute."
