Cannon wishes he were a conservative and a defender of the Constitution.
Unfortunately he supports NCLB, a Constitutional travesty. He is also a champion
of the corrupt federal earmark process, just like the rest of our federal
delegation.

If these two gs are so similar seniority trumps opportunity especial in this
political climate. Earmarks have become a problem. I beleive Cannon is correct
to make earmarks a transparent process. I think Chaffetz will short change us if
elected. If he is unwilling to even try to bring home our tax dollars then why
send him back.
Earmarks, as evil as they appear, if we dont bring home federal dollars to fund special projects then local dollars will be used. This will short change local politics and result in tax increase locally. all politics is local.

Washington DC needs to be turned over from top to bottom. Cannon has been in
there too long. Out with the old, in the new...I am voting for Chaffetz!

All things being equal (on paper at least) tie goes to the incumbent.
Fact is, Jason is a completely unproven quantity. He was a staunch, left-wing Democrat as a youth. At some point, and he has never given the time frame of his conversion, he becomes a Republican. He jumps into Governor Huntsman's office where as Chief of Staff he is described by Russell Skousen as the liberal driving force in that office. He leaves after only 8 months and now he is running as a staunch conservative. I am uncomfortable with his record, actually mostly lack of record.
And being a great communicator is over-rated. It sounds good in front of the crowd but having worked as an employee around state government some of the worst legislators are those that are smooth talking. They tend to spend less time working out details and being thoughtful because they can overcompensate by going into salespitch mode. Think in the Utah legislature, who are some of the worst legislators, and consider that many/most of them are also great orators.
In the old days some of our greatest thinkers were also gifted as being some of our greatest speakers. Few of those anymore.

Cannon is out the door. I would never vote for him again. I wrote a letter to
cannon and hatch about illegal immigration. I heard back from Hatch about his
views. Never heard back from cannon, what a surprise.

Cannon demonstrated his incompetence with his ramblings on "The
O'Reilly Show" recently (when asked about the FLDS situation). It
wasn't necessarily what he said, but rather, he didn't make any sense
at all. He is an embarrassment to Utah. Chaffetz, or pretty much anyone... would
be better than Cannon!

what has Cannon done? What has he really accomplished? Is his a loud and
effective voice for increased oil drilling? For USA first business policies?
For improving the US infrastructure? Someone else--someone energetic and

I wish we could see all the questions for ourselves and make our own decidion
not just the Dnews word for it, but there are many differences. In 20 questions
I doubt that gives the whole truth. The earmark difference is huge same with
Iraq.

The only difference between Cannon and Chaffetz is that Cannon has been in
Congress for 12 years, has a proven conservative voting record, has powerful
committee positions, has passed more substantive legislation than any other
Congressman in the history of Utah (besides Jim Hansen), has ran for Congress in
order to defeat a liberal democrat, has post-graduate education, has real-world
business experience, and actually lives in the district he represents.
Other than that they are the same.

Cannon says he is against Amnesty? Just look at the bills he has sponsored and
it tells a completely different story. How can we trust someone who lies about
things that are very easily verifiable?
Cannon is a perfect example of a politician who tells you what you want to hear at election time and then does the opposite hoping we won't pay attention.

With my vote, a "tie" goes to the man who isn't an incumbent of a
shameful Congress with dismal approval ratings for the past decade.
Mr. Cannon is weak on immigration, voted in party lock-step for the President's for No Child Left Behind and displayed inexcusable contempt for the state delegates (neighborhood reps) at the GOP convention last month. His voting record isn't terrible, but it isn't great either, and he is out of touch with Utah. Jason Chaffetz is a conservative breath of fresh air and deserves a shot in Congress.

I don�t agree with Chris Cannon on some issues and some
issues I do. What I do know about Chris is that he is passionate and committed
about America. He is the type of guy you want in Washington. Someone who has a
record you can track and know how he will vote and votes like the majority of
the people of the 3rd district would. All we know about Jason is that he
doesn�t live in the district and appealed to the delegates
by feeding them lines tailored made for a campaign but not core beliefs. It
would be detrimental to Utah if Chris wasn�t sent back and
we sent Jason to instead. He has converted from liberal to conservative what is
to say he wont convert when he gets to Washington. And we have a record that
shows Chris has been consistent.

I like Cannon! He represents us well and works hard for Utah. I believe he
listens to the people who live in the 3rd district.
I don't like the fact that Jason doesn't live in the district even if it is only two miles outside the boundries and legal. It seems strange that he would not want to represent himself and his neighbors and friends where he lives.

I find it funny that Chaffetz points out that he is good at communicating. I
have seen him talk and while he is a very good speaker I find that the words
coming out of his mouth tend to be distortions and lies. Unfortunatly he is
convincing so those who don't know any better tend to believe him. He
represents the bad connotation of a "politican".

That said, Cannon stopped responding to letters and emails years ago. He votes for bills he doesn't support, and then tries to show a lame excuse for why. The 1st time I saw him do that at a BBQ 6 years ago, I figured Chris had been back to DC too long. I have been waiting for someone else to show up that will do a better job. I would much rather have Jason back in DC than Chris.

This is such a joke. Cannon is right in saying his opponent is all about sound
bites. Jason claims to be a businessman but he is merely political consultant -
a professional sound bite machine.

Chaffetz is FOR a guest worker program? What a liar! He told me (I'm a
state delegate) he was adamantly opposed to such a program. I wasn't sure
if I could trust him but he was saying all the right things at the time. I feel
hoodwinked and I want my money back.

Jason campaigned for Dukakis - Maybe it was because of the family tie but he was also College Democrats Chairman while at BYU so I don�t think so.
I am old enough to remember that Dukakis ran as the Anti-Reagan saying Bush was another 4 year extension of President Reagan. Now Jason thinks he can embrace the conservative principles of Ronald Reagan.
A leopard cant change his spots and this guy will be an embarrassment if sent to Washington.

Cannon is crytal clear, he supports illegal immigration so business can have
cheap labor. when 70 to 80% of the american people want illegal immigration
stopped and our congress wont do anything about it. Its time for a change.
After we get rid of cannon, Bennett should be next on our list.

From what I've read about Chaffetz he is far more conservative than Cannon... take for instance immigration. Chaffetz wants to uphold the law... Cannon wants to ignore it and open the gates to illegals.

It isn't that Cannon isn't conservative, it is that he doesn't
listen anymore. He also has not been consistant on what he thinks, or says he
believes and how he votes. He often opens his mouth and says really dumb things.
He often doesn't do anything about issues that do matter. We need someone
that has different priorities, and will listen. Vote for Jason.

Then when they move the district boundaries again, do you want Jason to run for a different district? I asked Jason if he was willing to move if elected. He said he didn't want to move, and then have to move again. His family is happy where they live.

in it. I love how this article only looks at what Cannon SAYS rather than what
he does in any detail. I'm not surprised given that his brother is the

I want change! That's why I'm voting for Cannon. Why replace a
strong, influential, and consistant conservative with a newcomer that we know
nothing about? We need leadership in Washington to stop the Democrat machine.

I have spoken with several members of Congress from other states and they all
have tremendous respect for Chris Cannon and the dilligent legislator and policy
wonk that he is. That's why they elected him chair of the Western Caucus!
Cannon may not be slick, but he is a true conservative who should continue the
fight for Utah. Go Cannon!

housing, food prices, consumer confidence and the magnitude of those problems
has grown so large that in recent months an issue as large as the Iraq war is

The article is correct: both candidates have very similar positions. The big
differences between the candidates are seniority in congress and an
understanding of the system. Cannon is in a position where he can be an
influence and get things done for Utah and the U.S. Chaffetz is a very good
orator, but it is easy to say what people want to hear and another thing to
deliver. We know that Cannon is conservative and where he stands from his
record. We cannot risk losing seniority and influence in Washington by voting
in someone new who we merely hope will vote as a conservative and will have
little chance in being part of important congressional committees.

Cannon goes in debt to win each time. Who does he go in dept to? Jason has an
all volunteer group, and is not going in debt.

First he attacks Chris for having a Guest Worker Progam, now we read that he has his own Guest Worker Program. I thought that was Amnesty? So now Chaffetz supports Amnesty?
Actually, Chaffetz supports concentration camps for Hispanics, out in the desert. We did that before. It was called internment camps for Americans of Japanese descent and I thought that was a low point in our modern history.
Now Jason refuses to even mention his beloved camps. He even talked about camps at convention. This tells me that Jason will say anything to get elected. Tells the right-wing convention what they want to hear. Now trying to tell the primary voter what they want to hear.
He understands that most Americans are NOT opposed to a guest worker program, now he supports that. Even though he spent over a year calling it amnesty.

So they come to America illegally, apply for his visa with a greedy business sponsor and then they get to stay.
This is AMNESTY! Period!

The main differences between the two are experience, seniority, and ability to
get things done. Chris has all those, and Jason doesn't. It's true
that Cannon is not the most articulate guy in the world, but he is a very
effective legislator. He has passed more bills than anyone in Utah history
except Jim hansen - who had more seniority. Chris has my vote.

Chris Cannon is a good Congressman. Nothing against the other guy, but you
don't fire an employee who has served you long and faithfully just because

Oh come on. Jason never advocated concentration camps. He talked about housing
felons who were also illegal immigrants in tent cities on their way to
deportation. It's working in Arizona, for all prisoners. What about being
a FELON gets you special privileges? Only in the US are they treated better
than the military or the average citizen. When I was in Rwanda, I saw one of
their prisons. All of the men were wearing pink. Yup, pink. Even that is a
deterrent. No one is claiming that we should just round up anyone here
illegally and stick 'em in concentration camps. Be real.
Oh, and "guest worker" is not the same as amnesty. guest worker means you work, you go home. Amnesty means you work, you don't go home, we let you cut to the front of the line for citizenship, we offer you all kinds of bennies like tuition breaks, free health care (paid for by our taxes), etc. And the anchor babies? Not even Cannon supports automatic citizenship.

Too often people are persuaded by the pathos of politics when voting for a
candidate. Chaffetz curly hair and his emotional speeches can be appealing, but
he has now spoken out of both sides of his mouth on immigration.
Now that both candidates would appear to vote the same in congress who will be heard? Cannon has clout and my vote.

Chaffetz has positioned himself as an ultra conservative to sway state delegates
and get through the convention and now he is saying another thing to be
competitive against Cannon in the primaries.
This is why this state (particularly the 3rd district) needs a two party system. The race shouldn't end at the primaries but unfortunately, it does. More unfortunate is that the Utah Republican party has moved so far to the right that Cannon's very conservative record is painted as liberal. This is truly ridiculous.

You clearly need to read Cannon's voting record and his statements on illegal immigration. He was proud of the fact that Utah began giving driver's licenses to illegals and said, "sometimes we don't even make the distinction between legal and illegal." Even now he says that he wants to "seal the border" but just voted to not require hospitals to report illegals who come in for medical treatment. Talk about hypocritical!
And Cannon has not served us faithful, he's served Washington faithfully. He doesn't return letters, phone calls, or any type of communication anymore. His convention video was full of endorsements from the Washington big wigs telling us, "that Chris Cannon, he's pretty good." I don't want someone who's in bed with Washington politics and elitist groups. I want someone who understands what is going on here in Utah and is going to change it. And Chris Cannon has a consistent record of not doing that. Which is why I will be voting for Jason Chaffetz!

Brad, what part of "short-term" do you not understand? A short-term,
non-permanent guest worker program is not amnesty. For crying out loud. We
used to have a program like that. It worked.
Amnesty, like was said before, is putting out the welcome mat, handing out benefits like candy, then not having the GUEST workers go back home, but putting them to the front of the line for citizenship, ahead of the others who've been waiting in the legal line for oh, 10 years.
I can't waltz into any country I like, then claim they should support me, pay for my medical care, house me and clothe me, then stick around for the 8 months of the year I'm not working. Come on! America IS a welcoming country - that doesn't mean we need to continuously turn a blind eye to illegal activity.

I'm really surprised that this article did not provide "proof" of
Cannon's "conservatism" by quoting his actual voting record ...
some of which would actually belie his statements made in this article. Cannon
has become the typical politician who tells us what he thinks we want to hear
but votes the way it will best affect his political career. Cannon serves at the
pleasure of the people, not because as incumbent he's "been with us a
long time." It's time for a change across the country, for people with
focus to step up and do what they say they'll do. I believe Jason Chaffetz
will do just that. I'm voting for Jason for the fourth time on June 24 (the
first three as a state delegate in May).

On many of the issues Cannon and Chaffetz do have similar views. I will also
concede that Chaffetz is a better orator than Cannon. That said, talk is cheap!
There are lots of politicians that talk different than they walk. So for me,
Cannon is doing the work. I have seen and continue to see evidence of this. He
shares my values and is working toward bringing government more in line with
those. So the question becomes do we throw away the experience, seniority, and
influence that Cannon has in favor of someone who communicates better? To me the
choice is easy you keep the experience. Add that to the fact that I have found
Chaffetz to have a casual relationship with the truth of facts and I have to
question him and his �conversion� to
conservatism. In this climate it is more important than ever to keep the proven
conservatives in congress.

You have defined amnesty as anything that doesn't kick them out. So they come here illegally THEN get Jason Chaffetz' guest worker card and suddenly it's not amnesty?!
We realize you are just trying to deceive all the readers, voters and delegates.
What Chaffetz has proposed perfectly fits HIS definition of amnesty.
You people are just plain shameful. You attack Cannon for years as Mr Amnesty, now along comes your second charlartan in a row who calls Cannon names then when pushed comes up with their own amnesty.
Keep this in mind, while Cannon has proposed a Guest Worker visa it would ONLY apply to less than 2 million people. Chaffetz' plan would apply to over 20 million! Chaffetz' plan is FAR broader, far easier and by your standards one of the largest amnesty's proposed in America!
