About time we get on the ball...Now we're moving along with China's Students as well!! Education is a key to a long life of working in the "Real World" even in the Summer time!!

Yeah we don't have enough teacher burn out yet. Let's put 'em to work all summer long and see how they come back in the fall....

If it's optional for the teachers and they choose to teach, then what's the concern? Just don't force a teacher who doesn't want to teacher.

Fabulous idea! Any use of resources that promotes free choice, education, and personal responsibility is a winner. Tutoring these students would cost more than $30 an hour. This is a good way to encourage the teens to finish the class, too, with the promise of a tuition refund. Money spent on education is an investment, not an expenditure. I like it!

I agree with you 100%

Perhaps eventually the US will be able to rank higher in education than 18th in the world...behind Hungary and South Korea.

I am one of these summer teachers. This program is awesome! I teach only one class. I was looking for a summer job (because a teachers pay is not nearly enough!)and this opportunity came along. I don't think I would have been able to find another job where I work only for 2 hours and 10 minutes a day and get paid at the rate I do. Granted there is prep time involved, but I am doing something I love.

I love teaching. As the saying goes: if you do something you love, you will never have to work a day in your life.

I grew up in Southern California. We had summer school classes for all grade levels. It was where I learned to read music and do other things. I took math, and I loved it. I'm sad Utah doesn't offer these opportunities to all students in the state.

It just takes money! The current program takes away from some other things that could have been funded, but this may be better. However, if it expands without additional funding, the regular student will be hurt (again!) as money is redirected away from them for more special programs. I'm glad for the program as I have a child taking a class. I just want it funded appropriately instead of taking it from elsewhere in an already underfunded system.

I'm glad the legislators are happy. How long will that last?

Ironically, if done right this might actually save money (on a per student basis) since we can educate more students using the existing facilities which sit idle during the summer months. Sounds like we can also increase teacher pay without breaking the bank too.

Chuck, feel free to send more money. Ever dollar you keep is a dollar you kept away from the schools. As mom always said: "giving starts at home."

State legislators and Alpine School District officials tour summer classes at Mountain View High School on Tuesday. The extended-year program allows students to retake classes they have failed or to take electives they couldn't fit in during the regular school year, freeing them up for other electives or activities next year.
