UHSAA makes final decision on realignment

Wow! | 4:15 p.m. June 10, 2008
Bingham is guaranteed to win that league every single year. There is no balance. When the new school opens in Herriman, Riverton will get hit. That means you have Bingham walking through the league in every sport.

Shift to the other league that is hit with Lone Peak, Alta, Brighton, Jordan... it makes no sense.

Then you have the Central league that has absolutely ZERO good teams, and the North league that has Davis walking through the daisies winning region championships in their sleep.

Why did the UHSAA all of a sudden change from the last proposal?

Wow.
Just me | 4:31 p.m. June 10, 2008
The North is too big. If they play each other once there is hardly room for playing other regions. O well.
South Division | 4:35 p.m. June 10, 2008
Wow, is that a stacked region or what. Lone Peak, Alta, Jordan, Brighton, PG-- that is like the SEC of high school basketball.. Go 'diggers.

What about the other classifications? Are they still working on screwing them up?
High School | 4:51 p.m. June 10, 2008
This is high school sports, people act as if it was the NFL alignment ... let them "Play" where they want.
Good for Skyline | 4:52 p.m. June 10, 2008
Thanks for keeping Skyline in 5A, it would be sad to see them drop to 4A from an alumni perspective. The best football team in the history of the state should stay in the highest classification.

Go Eagles.

wow | 5:10 p.m. June 10, 2008
Better put Woods Cross in 2A so they can compete.
Interested Sports Fan | 5:19 p.m. June 10, 2008
Being a former coach, one tough thing the north 5A region will face with soccer is no preseason games. A 16 game limit and a nine-team region, each school will play the other home-and-home, which will be 16 games. That means the first game of the season, about five days after selecting a team, will count towards qualifying for state. For some, it could be okay, but if two of the top teams meet in that first game, the region title may be on the line early. The other regions in 5A will get a couple preseason games to get the bugs out.

Interesting realignment with Uintah. This past year, the St. George schools complained about having only three 4A teams playing with three 3A teams in Region 9. What is Uintah going to do to qualify for state. Do they automatically qualify? How will individual sports, such as wrestling, swimming, track and crosscountry, get their individuals to qualify for state? With wrestling, putting Uintah into a 4A region tournament without competing with that region for seeding purposes could be a nightmare for all parties involved. If anyone knows, please advise here. Good luck to everyone.
Wildcats Unite! | 5:20 p.m. June 10, 2008
Now wait a second, wow... in 1986 WX went 1 and 8 in football and still went to the State Playoffs, so give a little respect. There's still hope, even for the 'last of the little guys'!
Anonymous | 5:20 p.m. June 10, 2008
Region 8 will be the weakest football region in 3A, 4A, and 5A hands down. By the way, why put Timpview and Provo in different regions, that makes no sense.
Region 3 Football?!?? | 5:42 p.m. June 10, 2008
Do you think that Bingham football is happy with the new Region 3? How many years before they lose a region game?
2007 records:
Bingham: 11-2,
Copper Hills: 4-7,
Kearns: 5-6,
Riverton: 6-5,
Taylorsville: 3-7,
West Jordan: 5-5,
New School: likely no more than 2-3 wins for the first few years.

This has all the makings of the most lopsided region in the state for football. Too bad Jordan or Alta isn't in the region. They are both in a very strong Region 4 (w/ American Fork and Lone Peak).

Good to see all 3 high schools in Orem (Mountain View, Orem, and Timpanogos) finally back in the same region!!

Balance | 5:50 p.m. June 10, 2008
Too bad all regions can't be as balanced as Region 12.
Anonymous | 6:13 p.m. June 10, 2008
The only sport Davis really has been all that in recently has been basketball. They're not the dominant force some people think they are. Unless of course you live in Kaysville.
Re: wow | 6:18 p.m. June 10, 2008
Why single out Woods Cross? Yes, their football team has struggled. But look at men's and women's soccer. Both have excellent records over the years. The boy's basketball team made two consecutive playoff appearances and softball went to state this year as well. Maybe do a little research before assuming that all Woods Cross teams are horrible. With that train of thought, they better also move Granger and West down to 2A. Granger has had less success that Woods Cross. Thanks for the thought though.
B-Rad | 6:26 p.m. June 10, 2008
Region 6!? wow looks like Bountiful will dominate for years. East? Highland? Tooele? Stansbury? Woods Cross Jr High? See you guys in the frozen foods section. Braves! Braves! Braves!
Anonymous | 6:51 p.m. June 10, 2008
Timpview and Provo in different regions of 4A?????

Way to break up a whole city and one of the best rivalries around.

That was the lamest move ever!
FH | 7:20 p.m. June 10, 2008
Davis' annual strength has always been football and track/field. I'm sure each HS have their strengths so I believe it all balanced out just fine. They just need to hone their skills to defeat against their own "Goliaths".
re: region 3 football | 7:51 p.m. June 10, 2008
umm.....you must be a Lone Peak fan becasue they havent sniffed a title in a while in football. Last year it was AF (over PG). Year before it was PG. Go Cavemen!
Charger | 7:52 p.m. June 10, 2008
Does Skyline really have over 1500 students? Kind of doubt it.
SLC'er | 7:58 p.m. June 10, 2008
B-Rad . . . . nice cheer. What the h-e-double hockey sticks does "see you guys in the frozen food section" mean? REally, really really glad I didn't go to Bou
Uintah Fan | 8:24 p.m. June 10, 2008
Glad we don't have to travel as much. It will be interesting to see the parameters put on our kids to qualify for state.
Bulldog4Life | 8:26 p.m. June 10, 2008
What was UHSAA thinking? Anybody who has lived in Provo for the past 20 years knows that breaking up the Provo-Timpview rivalry is an impossibility! This is definitely going to significantly impact ticket sales at both schools... and possibly a few other schools in Utah Valley in retaliation. Do they think Springville-Provo is the new rivalry, or something?????
Anonymous | 8:32 p.m. June 10, 2008
WHAT?????? Timpview Provo is one of the best rivalries around. That is a bad move
Realist | 8:40 p.m. June 10, 2008
In what sport is Timpview Provo such a great rivalry, and anyway that is what preseason is for the game will still matter to the kids and the fans.
region 9 fan | 8:44 p.m. June 10, 2008
Since no one from down south has commented let me say thanks for leaving region 9 alone. makes for great competion. no 4a school wants to loose to a 3a school and the 3a schools have nothing to loose in playing a 4a school. we all want to be the giant slayers. after pine view, dixie, and snow canyon dominated 4a in their first year, i'm sure they wouldn't want to go back to 3a competition
3A? | 8:48 p.m. June 10, 2008
The 3A alignment makes no sense. Why is Emery and Carbon in a different region?
Jealous | 9:02 p.m. June 10, 2008
I wish I they had those teams in Region 4 when I played...fun region to play in. Every game is going to be great!
Blame Timpview | 9:08 p.m. June 10, 2008
The recruiting has cost one of the state's best rivalries.
Mixed Classifications? | 9:23 p.m. June 10, 2008
It is interesting to have districts, etc comment for months and then change so dramatically and say this is "final". A common sense suggestion for 4A-have Uintah, the third place team from region nine and the the two weakest teams, or alternate them from the other four regions be the first round of the state tournament. Then 2-7 teams are going instead of 6-4 teams.
Kelly Green with anger | 9:30 p.m. June 10, 2008
Provo and Timpview are all of 5 mins apart and they're not in the same region? Can someone please explain to me how these people justify their actions? Really silly, and I'd like to know where we can fight to block this. I'm a class of '02 and live no where near Provo now, but this still matters.
Timpview | 9:39 p.m. June 10, 2008
Man this realignment sucks hard, our rivalry is out the door. Nobody can stop us anyway, but that rivalry was the best in utah, alta vs bingham rivals? Hahaha funny but timpview vs. provo is way bigger than that.
Strangeness | 9:47 p.m. June 10, 2008
Why is Timpview and Provo not in the same region. Time will tell if Region 4 becomes the super region. (Lone Peak has done very well in football). Skyline has the best football coach in the state. They could have 300 kids enrolled and he'd still find the heart in the kids to win.

Well until the next re-alignment, let the fun begin.
Good Move | 9:56 p.m. June 10, 2008
Congratulations UHSAA.

I don't know how it could have been done better. You took into consideration the biggest issues - travel time, travel costs, and time out of school - and made the new alignment work in the best interests of student athletes.

Maybe some of the "traditional" school rivalries appear to be missing, but what an opportunity for new ones! And, the alignment makes for some great state tournament opportunities in all sports.

Thanks for all you do on behalf of student athletes in Utah!
Anonymous | 10:27 p.m. June 10, 2008
wait when is this alignment supposed to take effect?THIS school year (2008-2009) or the next 2009-2010??
to : Good move | 11:41 p.m. June 10, 2008
Yeah Timpview not traveling 2 minutes to Provo was a great move. That is really going to hellp the athletes and school district with their travel time and costs.

This is a horrible piece of work.
lopsided enrollment | 12:00 a.m. June 11, 2008
How 'bout 6A? Are you kidding me? Why does Davis and Hunter get 1000 more kids then Skyline and remain 5A ?
WOW | 1:19 a.m. June 11, 2008
Wow, some of these alignments have little or no resemblance to the ones that were discussed at the hearing on May 6. Take a good look at how much changed in what was West Central, South Central and South and the final regions 2, 3, and 4. Major changes. I wonder what the rational was.
Wrong About WC | 12:06 p.m. June 11, 2008
I don't think you'll be taking shots at Woods Cross for very long. Don't forget the best high school football coach in the state is now there, Fred Fernandes. He built Northridge from ground zero into a state power. He'll win games at Woods Cross too.
Anonymous | 12:07 p.m. June 11, 2008
Boo Hoo for Provo and Timpview to see their rivalry somewhat end because of realignment. Back in the 70's and 80's Viewmont and Bountiful had one of the top rivalries in the state if not the best. That to ended thanks to realignment. Even though Viewmont and Bountiful still play each other in football and basketball, it is not much more then just a non-conference game. I'm for keeping the neighborhood rivalries alive.
Rosco P. Coaltrain | 12:42 p.m. June 11, 2008

Davi | 2:14 p.m. June 11, 2008
Ok Bountiful who?? And is that the school up north that is famous for WHHHinning! Congrats Skyline, your championships are OVERRRRRRRR! No more recuriting.
Provo and Timpview | 2:28 p.m. June 11, 2008
Some rivalries are healthy while others are not...what happened in the football game between Timpview and Provo was SICK and WRONG and many in the community actually anxiously await to see the both schools move on to other regions.

Provo District is a two-school district where one school has received vast favoritism for decades at the expense of the other and now a community wide schism exists.

Let the coaches from the different sports that want to continue the rivalry play in non-league contests but this new alignment provides the opportunity for Provo to finally get Timpview off of its football schedule and the community perhaps can begin to heal (a bit)...

Anyway, the UHSAA had to divide up Utah County 4-A schools into two leagues of six school each, so that's as good as line as any to divide the Mason/Dixon of Utah County...
2A Bulldog | 2:46 p.m. June 11, 2008
We are on our way to the top again. YES!!! THANK YOU; THANK YOU. UHSAA....... Go Bulldogs.....

RE: Region 3 Football?!?? | 3:48 p.m. June 17, 2008
Do I think that Bingham football (coaches? players? supporters?) is/are happy with the new Region 3? Honestly, no. I think they don't really care. The decision is out of their hands so they'll take what they get.
Would it be more competitive with Jordan or Alta in that region? Probably, but it's not happening between 2009-2013. I'm hoping that the rest of Region 3 will prove us all wrong and make the football games competitive.
On the flip side, being in a weak region may hobble whoever takes the football region title in Region 3. Winning easily in a weak region doesn't prepare a team for the playoffs very well. Even though lower ranked Region 2 teams won't make the playoffs, those who do may be better prepared.
The UHSAA isn't looking at football alone in deciding the regions. For example, Riverton football hasn't quite reached the level Bingham has but Riverton baseball seems to be very good. We'll just have to see how things pan out. (No pun intended, Miner fans).
GVHS huh | 8:04 a.m. June 18, 2008
Dear Gunnison
What championship are you talking about?
Not sure what sport you are talking about. As I see it there are still powerhouses left in 2A in every sport. Just wondering what sport you are talking about.
Just because Manti, Richfield and ALA left you think that you get a state ring? Maybe baseball.
Anyways good luck backing up your comments
Re: Region 3 Football?!?? | 4:03 a.m. June 23, 2008
"Wow!", do you really think Bingham is going to dominate in EVERY sport once the new realignment takes effect? I don't think so. Granted, historically, new schools tend to take a few years to get their programs going. So I'll not try to argue that point.
However, I think you either think too highly of Bingham or have too low an opinion of the rest of Region 3. Riverton may take a hit when the new school opens but considering that Bingham has gone through that process three times (with the opening of West Jordan, Copper Hills and Riverton, respectively) and didn't suffer tremendously from the experiences. When each of those schools took a significant portion of Bingham's student body, the sports Bingham was strong in at the time remained strong.
It's been a long, slow process for Bingham to go from 2-7 in football the year that West Jordan opened to being one of the best programs in the state, albeit with critics who would deny this. No program is without such critics, be it Skyline, Alta, Jordan, Bingham, or anyone I haven't mentioned for a lack of space.
AT5 | 8:48 p.m. July 3, 2008
why would they put hillcrest in the toughest region in there. These people are so dumb!!! Put them in Bighams region and they might get 4 wins
