Good sign.

Since Bronco took over, I think that whoever has lost this golf tourney has gone on to beat their rival in football.

Good sign.
The Victory that matters | 5:44 a.m. June 10, 2008
I will be very happy to keep with the tradition of losing this golf event, as long as we keep winning in Football. GO COUGARS!
Magic Happens | 7:19 a.m. June 10, 2008
It's simple, Kyle is living right on and off the field. God favored him over Bronco just like he will come November.

You know, as much as I really hate the Utes, I'm glad to see Bronco and Kyle come together in a spirit of camaraderie for a good cause. Also, and I know this sounds odd, I'm glad Bronco finally submitted to singing the Utah song. It's tradition, after all, and refusing just makes him look like a poor sport.

And maybe actually singing the song this year will mean we beat the Utes by more than a miracle play.
Bob | 7:51 a.m. June 10, 2008
Keep your eye on the prize. The real winner? The kidney foundation. Kidney disease is awful.
Robert H | 7:54 a.m. June 10, 2008
Oh the beauty of this!

So BYU is now really in Whits head. The final paragraph is all we need to know. Whit wins this pathetic...what did Karl Malone say? Golf is a good walk waisted? Anyway, Whit wins that and then loses the football game in November.

I know there are some who absolutely love golf, my brother included. As far as I'm concerned let the Utes win that every year, twice during odd numbered years, or years beginning with '2's'. So long as we win the Holy War that counts!

Oh, and even though golf is a horrible day waisted, didn't BYU have a golfer win the Masters? That Weir guy. Does our lovely singing buddies from the north have any Master's jackets in their collective closets?

Hmm, didn't think so.

Go cougars! BCS bound if they can run the table.
re: Robert H | 8:16 a.m. June 10, 2008
Wow...on and on about how golf is a waste of time and energy then go on to bloat about your Cougar that won a Masters tourney? You're post is so shambled and disorganized that I'm not sure your uneducated brothers and sisters at in Happy Valley will understand...on second thought... maybe that's your own little language.

As for the golf tourney...who cares who won or lost. This was a charity event. At least Bronco had the guts to live up to his penalty for not recruiting the best players. Hey, maybe there is a connection to football...Whit said its all about recruiting...Mendenhall was never a good recruiter... so maybe this will translate to the football field.

Go Whit and the Utes. Hey Bronco, nice hat!!!
Waisted? | 8:27 a.m. June 10, 2008
Where did you go to school, Robert H - BYU? What does the word "waisted" mean? And don't tell me it was a typo - you made the same misspelling twice. I think the word you're looking for is "wasted", as in the sentence "looking at the history of the rivalry, Utah has WASTED the y."

I think "waisted" is what happens when you spend your 4 years of college eating at the Creamery.
Seriously | 8:43 a.m. June 10, 2008
Everybody here needs to chill out. It's an article about the golf game for CHARITY. Save the smack for the football articles.
Cougar Donor | 9:02 a.m. June 10, 2008
I am a Cougar Grad and kidney donor. This tradition is something I've watched for the last 20 years and have enjoyed watching the coaches come together for a great cause and provide a ton of laughs along the way. As the Utah Foundation has said, this is a unique experience with rivalries as other chapters have not been able to duplicate with other rivals across the country. Thanks to Bronco and Kyle for carrying on the tradition. Thanks be to this event and the lives it changes for the better. I'm glad my sister and I can laugh together 13 years following the miracle of our transplant between a Cougar and a Ute.
Witt rocks! | 9:02 a.m. June 10, 2008
Wittingham kicked " Bronco's " butt. The better coach wins. Go Utes
Hollywood | 9:19 a.m. June 10, 2008
Laughing at your comment, "Magic Happens." Yes, I'm a Coug fan and graduate, but that remark made me laugh out loud.

Good-natured ribbing. Nothing wrong with that. And we can all be civil and cheer for the success of the other school. Glad BYU has Bronco, but Kyle's a great guy as well. I'm one of those people that want to see the Cougars go undefeated and the Utes finish 11-1 every year.
lets hope | 9:20 a.m. June 10, 2008
Lets hope that no matter what team we support that both of them come to provo undefeated.

If they manage to do that there is a chance that who ever wins has a shot at "the BCS" title game not just "A" bowl championship game.

Utah | 9:24 a.m. June 10, 2008
Looks like Kyle is just living right. You know, living right, making the right decisions, being righteous and then the Lord steps in and does the rest. That kind of thing. If he keeps living right, the Utes will crush the Cougars in November. Keep it up Kyle! The Lord will bless you and the Utes will be "God's Team" this year!!! Woo hoo!!!
Herm F | 9:34 a.m. June 10, 2008
Golf is great. Yay for golf! Charity is even better. Go charity! A little good natured poking fun by both sides is good. Yay for rivalry. Can BYU beat Utah 3 years in a row? Probably. They should be excellent again this year.
hey Utah- | 9:35 a.m. June 10, 2008
wasn't it your coach two years ago or so who said, for the record, that "we just aren't living right"? Why yes, I believe he did.

If twhit's winning the golf scramble is a sign that he and his team are starting to live right, then as a BYU fans I give you all a thumbs up for learning from your wiser, better looking, and older brother in Provo.
Well Said | 9:53 a.m. June 10, 2008
Cougar Donor.

A very worthy cause and you are a great example.

Go Utes!

Go Cougs most of the time!
Utah Cougar | 9:55 a.m. June 10, 2008
Will you guys just give it up about the whole "God's team" and all. If you feel that bad about losing the game why don't you find something else to make fun of like.....I know there's something here...Our stupid mascot Swoop? No that's you guys...How we haven't beaten you in two years?...Nope still you....How we lost to UNLV and Air Force?...Dangit, looks like you've taken all the good stuff. OK so go ahead and call us "God's team", it's only fair that you have one thing to hold over our heads!
who are you people anyway? | 10:01 a.m. June 10, 2008
in regards to the comment from the one who wrote, "re: Robert H" you trashed talked "robert h" about his "post is so shambled and disorganized that I am not sure your uneducated brothers and sisters AT IN happy valley will understand..."

Dude if your going to rip on somebody, for as you say "your own little language", you might want to be sure you are not talking in a "little language of your own". What exactly is "at in" whether it be in happy valley or any other valley????????

I tend to agree with some of the other people on this comment list, this is a good charity event, find some charity in your own hearts and leave the football trash talk to football articles in the fall.
Re: Magic Happens | 10:09 a.m. June 10, 2008
Easily the best comment on this page. Good work.
Re: hey Utah | 10:11 a.m. June 10, 2008
Actually, it was Quinton Ganther that made the comment and it was later clarified that he meant some players on the team weren't taking game preparation seriously.

As for your comments about BYU being wiser, better looking, and older; wrong, wrong, and wrong again. Utah was founded first(older), our research and academics are better than BYU's(wiser), and it only takes about two minutes on either campus to see who has the better looking student-body.
Funny guys | 10:15 a.m. June 10, 2008
Ok, so Whittingham knows how to recruit football players who play better GOLF than the BYU football players. Yes, he is doing something right.

Honestly, I have a lot of respect for both coaches and both teams. Charity events like this one are fun and bring out the best in rivalry fun.
Joebob | 10:37 a.m. June 10, 2008
Why didn't Bronco have Mike
weir on his team?
Zoobie 55 | 10:48 a.m. June 10, 2008
Come on Bronco. Take some golf lessons from Lavell. Where are your priorities? Congrats to both schools for showing class in raising funds for the National Kidney Foundation.
prc | 11:26 a.m. June 10, 2008
maybe Coach dubbya beat Bronco because he spends time golfing while Bronco spends his time coaching. Keep dreaming yewts. No matter what you do you'll always be second best in this state!
hey Re:hey Utah | 11:30 a.m. June 10, 2008
We know it is hard to try to live up to the huge shadow that BYU athletics casts over little bro.

It is hard, but just remember that failing only hurts you if you give up. Just remember the little choo choo and say, "I think I can, I think I can [beat BYU in basketball of football...someday]".
RR | 12:53 p.m. June 10, 2008
This is what a rivalry is all about. It should be good, clean fun, and not childish bashing the other team left and right, like people STILL have to do on an article about a charity. Good grief people.

About 4 years ago at BYU, the two schools newspaper staffs played a game of football, traditionally. That year, my roommate was the QB for BYU, and he was an all star QB from AZ in high school, and he led BYU to a 40-2 win. He said it felt great to crush the utes, but the spirit of the game was so fun and friendly, that no one really cared about the score.

The two schools also compete for a food drive, and other competitions as well. It's all fun, yet many support good causes. People, especially many who come here to post, need to learn to chill out and just have fun with the game and not find EVERY reason to bash the other team.

Frankly, all the rivalry bashing is way out of hand. Be men and act like men everyone.
Get Off | 1:08 p.m. June 10, 2008
If you don't like the rivalry bashing, then get off the comment board. If you haven't noticed, that's all that goes on here. Especially when there is nothing going on in SLC in the summer (except for the Bee's, which hardly counts). So, for all those "better than you" people out there (naturally the ByU fans who are pretty much holier than everyone) you can just tolerate the smack or stop at the end of the article without continuing to the comments.
Holy, er, than thou | 1:27 p.m. June 10, 2008
The holier-than-thou bashing is getting as stale as the Harline-is-still-open retorts. It's time for the Utah fans to come up with something fresh. Many of the over-the-top comments from supposed "BYU fans" are really just Utah trolls pretending to be BYU fans, just to stir the pot.

Remember, BYU faithful:

"Enter to Learn. Go forth and 18!"
Re: Holy, er, than thou | 1:52 p.m. June 10, 2008
Austin Collie pretty much brought on the continuation of the "holier than thou" M.O. with his "...living right, on and off the field..." comment. For cougar fans who hate hearing ute fans bring up the sanctimoniousness of the fans, coaching staff, and team from the school south down I-15, stop giving us such fresh material.
Tanner | 2:24 p.m. June 10, 2008
You mean Collie's Still Open! Thats the fresh material...
Re: Tanner | 2:26 p.m. June 10, 2008
Not really, that is just a lame spin-off.
Coug Fan--Collie's Awesome | 6:28 p.m. June 10, 2008
Hey, Ute fans, get worked up as much as you would like.

Collies quote has merit, as long as we understand the "blessings" doesn't necessarily mean "winning".

Many Utes strive to live right on and off the field, belessings do come their way, and we don't hear the rest of the poor Ute Fans whining.

My advice is to just grow up, play some defense, and get on with life.
much to do about nothing | 6:47 p.m. June 10, 2008
when we are all dead, who will care about football anyway? It is just a game!!!!!! Take a deep breath and say it three times...it is just a game....it is just a game...it is just a game...!
I feel much, much better now! Don't you?
BCS bound ? | 11:41 p.m. June 10, 2008
Cougars, try to realize once BYU or Utah gets on a playing field with someone out of the Mt West they are just not good enough.
KEEP DREAMIN!
Re: BCS bound ? | 7:55 a.m. June 11, 2008
More propaganda from the BCS to justity excluding all of the non-beautiful teams from their annual "beauty" contest.

Try to realize that you're a clueless BCS conference homer.
Gretzky | 8:57 a.m. June 11, 2008
great article. football is great but life is better. what a great cause to play golf for!
RR | 9:23 a.m. June 11, 2008
So I should get off writing comments because I think bashing is ridiculous and childish? I comment because it's something I like to comment on, and I don't need to find EVERY excuse to bash a school I don't like. Why, if someone stands up to encourage people to stop bashing each other, is that considered "holier than thou" or "better than you?" It's called being a grown up and not acting like a kid every time you post about your rival.

I agree. The utes need to find more than the same old same old if they want to bash. And I love the "go forth and 18"! I laughed out loud at that one!
People just need to learn to lighten up and chill. It's a game. It's a hobby. It's not supposed to intoxicate your life. It's supposed to be fun.

How about this year, ute fans offer BYU fans some hot dogs and nachos at the game? Now THAT would be news!
