Let me guess:
The perp got scared and took the items back to the base, and hid them somewhere.
He then made an anonymous call telling the SPs where they can find the box of guns.
Do I get a prize?
The story's been revised SINCE I posted....but it confirms what I suspected.
That was a pretty good guess laytonian. Maybe a little too good. So what were you planning on doing with them?
just kiddin.
If I didn't better I'd think someone put a curse on the Air Force and Hill in particular.
If they would have been Marines then this never would have happened. Actually I am just kidding. I know some Air Force guys and they are great but we always tease each other about which is better.
Let me get this straight, Air Force--you lose a box of automatic weapons, I (rhetorical I, people!) find them and return them to you, and now you want to charge me with possession of automatic weapons? How about the bozos who lost them to begin with?
I can totally see why the guy didn't want to just show up with the weapons, he was probably afraid he would be gunned down as a "heavily armed threat."
Let no good deed go unpunished.
is perfect and I have yet to see a perfect one. The one element that I think we tend to overlook though is complacency. We cannot be complacent when it comes to security issues on a Military Base. Thank goodness the weapons were returned...
This is great. Guys are leaving a secure military base, in a civilian car full of M-16's, but my grandma is getting stripped searched at the airport?
An accident. A story with a happy ending and a person who chose right over wrong. What better lesson could come of it? I hope that this will be a learning experience and not a punishment for both the military and the individual who is being sought. All of us at times have gone down this path, but how many of us actually take the road less traveled? People need to be encouraged for ultimately making a good decision.
Gimme a break. Finding someone's wallet & keeping it is one thing. Finding a box of M-16's is completely different. The ONLY reason this thief of deadly weapons (paid for by US taxpayers) had a change of heart was due to the intense media exposure. Go get a band aid to stop your bleeding heart!
I can't believe the Feds want the guy to turn himself in. How stupid do the Feds think this guy is.
The guy returned the weapons intact, and even tucked in a note of apology. But no, the vindictive Feds got to have their pound of flesh. It's no wonder hatred for the Federal government is growing. They got their guns back - they should be grateful and concentrate on reviewing their own weapons handling procedures to minimize a recurrence.
Would it really be worth it to spend even more of OUR tax dollars prosecuting and incarcerating this guy?
"I think the most important thing to do is learn from our mistakes, make improvements and continue to move forward" is valid only for the U.S. Air Force? What about the "perp"? Can he not do better? They absolutely want blood to take the limelight from their mistake. . .
A person returns the lost guns and now you want to press charges to blame someone for your stupidity. How did this person sneak back on base to return them?
