I'm shocked, and a little awed that Utah is a Republican state. Who would have guessed.
Hey Kids... | 9:39 a.m. June 5, 2008
Don't Forget to Vote Republican, for the Deseret News tells you so!

"GOP still on top in Utah." Ya Think?

As long as the Republican party is held hostage to off-wing religious fanatics the LDSChruch will always feel comfortable appearing to be the mainstream organization it is by its undeclared but decidedly philosophical support of the Republican party ala the radical religious idiots of American society.

Sadly, this segment of the American population is squarely in the minority, yet they hold an unjustified grip on the Republican party through their bullying, slandering and lies, as exemplified by the 4 Horseman of Lies... Limbaugh/O'Riely/Coultere/Hannity.

Yup! That's what's really at the core of Utah politics... off-wing neocon Corporate Welfare/Corporate Socialist loving Republican minions... the second highest Republican plurality in the nation, exceeded only by Idaho, of which Eastern Idaho is still considered more Utah than not even to this day.

Why is the Gop on top in UTAH:

Most Utah people do not know how to think for themselves. They learn this at an early age. They follow the pack! They will not try to learn on there own they are like sheep that cannot think for themselves.
Anonymous | 9:56 a.m. June 5, 2008
Good! You guys stay tied to a past that, demonstrably, isn't working. The rest of us will move on and save your delusional butts.

No need for thanks. We realize you're not capable of analyzing what's actually going on. We'll just put a fence around UT, charge admission and call you a living museum.

Some New News from: Hufffington Post, Utah will still vote for McCain that sent 4100 troops to there death! Go figure!

More than five years after the initial invasion of Iraq, the Senate Intelligence Committee has finally gone on the record: the Bush administration misused, and in some cases disregarded, intelligence which led the nation into war. The two final sections of a long-delayed and much anticipated "Phase II" report on the Bush administration's use of prewar intelligence, released on Thursday morning, accuse senior White House officials of repeatedly misrepresenting the threat posed by Iraq.

In addition, the report on Iraq war intelligence harshly criticizes a Pentagon office for executing "inappropriate, sensitive intelligence activities" without the proper knowledge of the State Department and other agencies.
Capt. Smash | 10:04 a.m. June 5, 2008
McCain didn't read the intelligence report before the invasion a tiny minority of people who took time to read it. .McCain voted for the war Obama argued against it. He has consistently said it was an unnecessary, unjust war.

WHY SHOULD WE TRUST MCCAIN TO SECURE OUR NATION HE VOTED TO SEND 4100 AMERICANS TO THERE DEATH. WHY DID HE VOTE THIS WAY? JUST TO AGREE WITH BUSH, AND VOTE JUST THE WAY BUSH TOLD HIM?

1. Is Iran stronger or weaker since Bush/McCains invasions of Iraq?

2. Has Osama bin Laden been killed or captured since Bush/McCains invasion of Iraq?

3. Are we paying more for gas now or before Bush/McCains invasion of Iraq?

4. Is our economy better of now or before Bush/McCains invasion of Iraq?

5. Is the White Houses creditability better now or before Bush/McCains invasion of Iraq?

6. Is the budget deficit higher now or before Bush/McCains invasion of Iraq?

7. Is the Middle East more peaceful now or before Bush/McCains invasion of Iraq?

8. Do we have more American Solders dead or before Bush/McCains invasion of Iraq?

Who cares? There's no substantive difference between the two parties?
DBG | 10:08 a.m. June 5, 2008
@Food for Thought: Interesting and I actually agree with your post here.

Here's another thought: Why doesn't everyone unaffiliate or become Independents. The party needs you more than you need them. If everyone unaffiliated there would be no party but the person runing. IMHO, political parties are part of the problem here.

Another interesting tidbit: In Utah County there are MORE UNAFFILIATED voters than those registered as republican.
Capt. Smash | 10:10 a.m. June 5, 2008
Bush, McCain, GOP and CLINTON voted to send 4100 troops to there death and for what? That is the real story here!

This WAR has cost us so much; it is unbelievable that damage that Bush administration has done to this nation. The saddest thing about this WAR most of the American cannot comprehend what has happen during the last seven years of this administration. Further, McCain wants to go down the same road as well disgruntled Hillary supporters! Go figure!

The best thing is Utah will follow with a vote for McCain, why? He looks like us and has a (R) after his name.
yathink | 10:14 a.m. June 5, 2008
it is time to tie king noah to a tree....switch parties already!
Richard | 10:14 a.m. June 5, 2008
Go Dems! We all need to get out and vote these GOP's out of office. Utah really needs to get rid of the corruption that the GOP brings to the table, I know that they say they are "doing God's will", but I think we can all agree that "God's Will" is not to discriminate while making the rich richer and the poor poorer. In fact I think that all the major religions agree on the fact that we need to be understanding and charitable. Those two words have not been in the Vocabulary of the GOP for some time now.

As for all the people that talk trash on Obama because he "has not made it clear where he stands on the issues", or that he will "talk to any leader unconditionally" you should try reading sometime. It is a great way to learn about his views. I hear them all the time, but then again I don't listen to Rush and Hannity for my news. I actually read and come to my own conclusions.
BobP | 10:15 a.m. June 5, 2008
This might be a good year for the Republicans to lose. With a humungous recession coming, whoever is in power will get the blame.
Paul in MD 7:19 | 10:18 a.m. June 5, 2008
And this is a good thing? The questions we should be asking is not how little taxes the little people pay. We should be asking why are so many who virtually build the fortunes of the wealthy get so little for their contribution. Then the wealthy have the audacity to look down at the very people who build their empires insulting them again as to how little they contribute in the form of taxes.

As to the fix. Neither major party is on board for the average American. We are simply a means to an end or more of the same except on a world scale with no say in the matter.
To SSMD & Paul in MD | 10:20 a.m. June 5, 2008
I am a CPA and find it laughable when people in UT complain about raising taxes. Between the family friendly provision of the child tax credit, the EIC, and charitable donations in the form of tithing, few people here pay any substantial income taxes to begin with. So what's the big deal? Raising taxes affects few people in UT anyway.

And guess what, a lot of rich don't pay their fair share either. In terms of dollars they pay a lot, but in terms of % of income, it's not as much as a typical individual. Also, Bush DID NOT cut taxes for Americans. The 15% break only benefits rich people with gobs of investment income. Last time I checked, most of us earn wages, not investment income. His tax cuts have done little to help anyone but the already wealthy.

To wit: the money to finance your expensive war that treats human life so callously has to come from somewhere. We can pay for it, or we can pass it onto our kids. Your choice.
And UTAH IS........ | 10:20 a.m. June 5, 2008
Still on top for being the moron state
Still on top for mommy meth
Still on top for Anti-depressants
Still on top for government intervention, unless it benefits big business, which is ironic because we are avoiding the slow down by being more local base economy.
Still on top for the lack of critical thinking that make democracy effective.

THANKS UTAH
Just wait | 10:29 a.m. June 5, 2008
You will see that the democratic incumbents will no longer allow the republican state committee for public affairs to exercise it's right to tax us dry. This is ridiculous...I can't believe that the ignorance of some district representatives results in a democratic majority congress, thus leading to anti-voucher candidates to lead us into the next decade. Pelosi herself might as well come on over and take charge. Absolutely ridiculous...
Carlos | 10:43 a.m. June 5, 2008
Sure, Americans are sick of Congress and give them a poor approval rating. But both houses of Congress are controlled by DEMOCRATS. So, how will putting more Democrats in office improve things? Doesn't make sense.

The only Democrat with any proposal for action is Obama, but all he says is CHANGE. Fine, but change from what to what? Change for the sake of change never is a course to follow. And for all the numbed robots who repeat his slogan, you don't come across as bright.
Anonymous | 10:48 a.m. June 5, 2008
Utah will vote for John McBush this November.
PLEASE REMEMBER | 10:51 a.m. June 5, 2008
PLEASE REMEMBER JUST TWO THINGS! 1. There was an article a while back that talked about how Utah is the most efficiently run state. There is a reason for that.
2. Things were pretty good economically until about two years ago when the Dems took over congress. What has happened since then?
I am completely independent, but these are things to look at. I also no longer live in Utah, and the democratic run state that I live in is an absolute mess from high taxes on EVERYTHING, to complete inability to accomplish ANYTHING.
Herbie the Painter | 11:09 a.m. June 5, 2008
I will never vote for McCain after he and anti Mormon hero Huckabee acted towards LDS people.
Provo Citizen | 11:34 a.m. June 5, 2008
I wonder... did any of us learn anything in our American History Classes? Do we not understand that responsibility for the government of our country lies on the shoulders of the people - NOT on the shoulders of the political parties? We the People have abdicated our responsibility by allowing our political parties to do the work of governing that is the PEOPLES' responsibility.

I challenge each of us to DO something today. Take back individual responsibility for our government. I challenge each of us to find out who the candidates are for our local offices, state legislature or state senate. Then, IGNORE the candidate's party affiliation and find out what the candidate stands for and what they think they can do for our government. If all they can do is cite party positions - pass them by. Then DO something to help the candidate you choose win the election.

Our founding fathers did not create a government to be run by political parties. Political parties were designed to be tools used by the people, not entities to lead the country. We the people must step forward and work for our freedoms or loose them to the political parties.
DBG | 11:46 a.m. June 5, 2008
Another historical FACT about Utah.

When Utah was set up to become a State, they couldn't gather the support from the GOP. Therefore, DEMOCRATS were the ones that permitted the State to become a State. Many Territorial Leaders of the time were Democrats and have been for a long time. There have been more Democrats running Utah than republicans in the whole history of Utah.

Why the change?

Someone posted that the republicans are held "hostage" by the LDS church or something. Truth is, no one is being held hostage. Several Church leaders ARE democrats. The most notable one is the late President Faust. He was a staunch democrat supporter. I've been told Monson is as well.

Secondly, the Utah Democratic party is VERY DIFFERENT than of the National Party. Don't get them confused. Hinckley stated it best" there are LDS members who are democrats and in good standing of the church. WE NEED MORE..LOTS MORE." Too often LDS republicans, esp in Utah, think the "r" is God's party.
The world turns | 11:47 a.m. June 5, 2008
Most Mormons forget the other half of the 1856 gop platform, Anti Slavery and Anti Polygamy (who really practiced Polygamy other then Mormons) The "two twin relics of Barbarism". Gop platform 1856. Utah would be a Democratic State if the Party would have granted statehood a decade earlier.
The Church in recent history has not endorsed politics but at one point the MORMON PEOPLE PARTY controlled politics in Utah. In 1893 many Mormons were asked to join the Republican party to balance political parties.
So what changed? Mormons and Utahans Still believe in:
1. Taking care of the poor 2. Civil Rights 3. Strong Education 4. Being steward of the world 5. Staying out of Debt 6. Taking care of the sick and elderly. 7. strong defense not offense.

So what is it abortion? Read the Bishops handbook about abortion. You may be surprised.

Republicans do not offer solutions just fear, debt and taxes on the middle class... Democrats will pay for our expenses and get us out of a senseless war.

Romney learned the hard way there is no place for a Mormon if you want to Lead the Republican Party Nationally!
Former Republican | 12:24 p.m. June 5, 2008
Full disclosure: Former PRESIDENT of my high school Teenage Republicans club. :) Why do I cringe with horror now whenever I hear Republican pundits on TV? Why did I become a card-carrying Democrat (yet somehow, shockingly, remain LDS)? 2 words: George Bush. I'll take Democrats any day over the GOP back-slappers that cheered on a President while he escalated our national debt to catastrophic proportions, killed tens of thousands of people in a non-threat country (Iraq), mismanaged and inadvertently strengthened 2 genuine threats (Iran, N. Korea), flunked Katrina, fanned the flames of anti-immigrant hysteria, and promoted corporate welfare and frat-boy "loyalty" over compassion and competence. I'll take "Tax & Spend" any day over the credit-card mentality of "Spend More - Don't Tax". I think my Danish-speaking, immigrant, pioneer great-great-grandparents would, too.
Kevin in Utah County | 12:38 p.m. June 5, 2008
This thread is a perfect example of what's wrong with our Country today. The majority of you are living in a black & white world. You're either Republican or Democrat. One is right and the other is wrong. One is good and the other is bad.
I agree with Democrats in that I believe the Republicans over the last 12 years or so have spent way more than they should and that includes the war in Iraq. But Democrats are wrong in saying if we didn't have the war in Iraq we would have all this extra money to spend here at home on health care, education, etc. So basically they are saying we should take the money from one thing and spend it on another. Why do we have to spend the money to begin with. The Government needs to get rid of programs we don't need and lower spending. All citizens are taxed too much, rich, poor and middle class.
People need to stop living in a black & white world and start voting for the person, not the party. There are good and bad on both sides. Take off your blinders and vote for the good.
Atypical Repub McCain | 12:48 p.m. June 5, 2008
... can be as atypical and far-left as a Repulican can get, and still have no problem pulling Utah.

Seriously, why doesn't the state go on permanent vote by mail for Presidential elections?
Bishops Handbook | 12:53 p.m. June 5, 2008
... read it regarding family size too. What's there in writing isn't what's pushed in the ward.
too bad - Utah always GOP ..... | 12:59 p.m. June 5, 2008
Utah is always Republican no matter who the candidate is. I would say that more than 50% of those Utah Republicans have no idea what McCain stands for nor do they care. They feel compelled to vote for the GOP no matter what mainly due to moral reasons like abortion and gay rights. Utahan's need to stop and consider that abortion and gay marriage are STATE issues and will be enforced by the state they live in. I will always vote for a Republican State governor and senators because that hits close to home for how I and my family will live HOWEVER the national candidate for president is different. This election we have a GOP presidential candidate which will will propagate more and more war , cost thousands more US lives, throw away billions and billions of dollars into IRAQ as well as further stagnate the economy. By McCain's own admission he is no expert on economic matters. WAKE UP UTAH !!!!!
Mr Ingorance | 1:04 p.m. June 5, 2008
maybe you only read boards you post on
wake up UTAH | 1:13 p.m. June 5, 2008
I am a Republican who is going to vote for Obama in the 08 election. I have never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate before ...until now. McCain is simply too old and will be nothing more than a propagation of George Bush for the next 4 years. Take a look at IRAQ, the economy, the environment, etc.. I for one have had enough of the GOP plan. Time for a change that will end this ugly, costly, war in IRAQ that has turned into VietNam all over again and NO ONE can predict a way to achieve victory. Time for a change with BIG OIL and the cozy relationship that the Bush administration has had with these guys. Time for a change to protect our environment. Time for a change to fast forward a move away from oil dependence. Time for a change for someone to take some innovative , new measures to end this national housing crisis. This is just the tip of the ice berg. The bottom line here - NO MORE BUSH-A-NOMICS!!!!!
Now in Colorado | 2:08 p.m. June 5, 2008
Having considerable family in Utah, ands being a BYU graduate, I really like to keep up on things there.

Honestly though, if you read the posting of the radical right people here who think the word liberal is a swear word, and that Democrats are leading us slowly down to hell, it makes sense that the company I work for had a chance to relocate to Utah with about 55 high paying jobs. I suggested otherwise and am so happy we haven't lent ourselves to the madhouse that is Utah!! Colorado is much the better choice.
war party media | 2:45 p.m. June 5, 2008
Realistically I see few differences in what the Obama camp has to offer as opposed to what the McCain camp has to offer.

Take your pick. Do you want to be bankrupted by wasting money on Military Adventurism or Entitlement programs?

There is still a candidate in the race that will cut spending across the board, get us out of not only Iraq but out of many of the other 129 (not an exageration or an estimate) countries where we maintain a military presence, get the economy back on track by actually standing up the the federal reserve, end the IRS, etc.

Untill the other candidates start sounding more like this man, they will not get my vote.
Anonymous | 3:19 p.m. June 5, 2008
Go vote for the beer mogul who voted to deny veterans benefits to the military in Afghanistan and Iraq! Who cares if he's being advised by lobbyists for Ameriquest Mortgage which has, so far, paid out $325MILLION in fines for predatory lending? Don't pay any attention to the fact that Phil Gramm who's been at the heart of the housing and lending mess is his financial advisor. Or that he needs a financial advisor since he, himself, admits he's soft on economics. Ignore the fact that he had advisors who lobbied for the Mexican government; it probably has nothing to do with his soft stand on illegal immigration.

After all, he's an old white man and that's what UT looks for for direction.
James Albert Jensen | 3:39 p.m. June 5, 2008
Having been raised in Salt Lake City in the 1930's and 40's, I remember when the Democratic party held a majority in both houses of the Legislature; the Governor was a Democrat; Both members of the House of Representatives were Democrats, and one of them a woman (Reva Beck Bosone) and both Senators were Democrats. It is evident from this history that the majority of Utahns at that time felt more secure under a Democratic regime than under a Republican. In wonderment I mentioned this phenomenon to a friend the other day,and his response was, "well Al, Mississippi and Alabama were totally Democrat then too." I had an "A ha" moment. There you have it: areas of the country which are strongly racist became Republican bastions after the "Brown vs. Board of Education" decision found publicly financed segregation unlawful. Since the voting rights act of 1964, we see changes in the monolithic representation there. Not so in Utah. You remain the State of "Below minimum wage Republicans." This is because of the lack of tolerance for independent thought fostered by the LDS Church, and its "segregated" hierarchy.
Moderate realist | 4:22 p.m. June 5, 2008
Oh how I wish more people could be like Kevin! You guys see everything as black and white with one group being fully good and one fully bad. Can you not open your eyes? You Bush haters, if you cannot find anything positive in his administration you are automatically suspicious because no man is completely bad. Why would he be more evil than any other Republican or Democratic politician out there? Power corrupts pretty much everyone and you need to show evidence of the supposed 'higher standing' of Democratic politicians. Some politicians may be better than others but your hateful fixation reeks of unwillingness to look at both sides of issues. On the other hand, many so-called Republicans in Utah are close-minded and lazy in their approach to politics and demonize liberals consistently. But liberals often ooze out hypocrisy from every poor. They talk of 'compassion' as a key value but they apply it only to those who think like them, and of course no Republican politician deserves it! Nietzsche called this 'slave morality'. Having lived in Massachusetts I saw how a 'blue' state can be even more bigoted, intolerant, and close-minded than a red state. Let's be humble!

"The RNC is leading the way to ensure John McCain and all our Republican candidates have the resources needed to run strong campaigns and defeat the liberal Democrats this November."

Let's hope that the RNC is better at that than Bush was at governing or prosecuting wars.

On second thought, let's hope for something completely different. Like a government for citizens instead of rich corporations.

Actually, it has nothing to do with being racist, at least not in Utah. Do you know when the biggest shift in local politics came? Roe v. Wade.
