The flow will be fine. High gas prices, less traffic, no problem.

You don't suppose we could ask that 400 South be the first street studied, do you? Fourth South is the most ridiculous route across town! What a waste of time.

Conservatives please take note: three elected officials, who are working across party lines to get things done!

Time and gas would be saved by changing many "stop" signs to "Yield". Maybe not a good idea in dense urban areas, but perhaps 50% overall could be changed with little change in safety.

No, liberal larry, we don't have three elected officials working across party lines--Gov. Huntsman is not a Republican, have you not noticed? You guys aren't running a serious candidate against him this year, because in the words of a prominent Democrat in the state senate "we love the governor!"

I'll grant you one thing....traffic flow is not a partisan issue.
Get rid of the eyesore | 8:00 a.m. June 3, 2008
Get rid of those silly light rail trains. What an eyesore in a beautiful city. Thanks a lot Rocky, man of no vision. Replace all the trains with simple hybrid Trolleys that drive like cars. Let them drive in the lane reserved for the light rail. Second Salt Lake needs to develop a north exit route to I-15. Stop relying on Beck street to handle major traffic flow.
It's about time! | 8:16 a.m. June 3, 2008
Nice to see somebody is doing what we pay them for! This has been needed throughout the city for 15 years or more...something our previous mayor was too busy protesting to get around to. Rocky Anderson was a miserable excuse for a leader, but maybe now we can actually begin to see some results.

Larry - I'm glad you addressed your post to conservatives, as they are definitely the only ones in government who have difficulties working across party lines. ;)

I love that suggestion. Get rid of the light rail to improve traffic. Yeah, that will help.

I suspect, and worry, that the problem will resolve itself via $6/gallon gas. We'll be very glad for the light rail system when that happens.

You will never have "good traffic flow" as long as TRAX is downtown. What a disaster TRAX has turned out to be!

Of course all the downtown building construction going on doesn't help anything, either. There is nothing quite like seeing some construction guy come marching out into the street right into oncoming traffic, planting his stop sign, and holding everyone up for five minutes while a giant cement truck tries to back into a driveway.

Highland Drive from I-215 to 9800 South is a great example of synchronized lights. I have driven this road for years and have yet to hit a light green.

You say that we should change stop signs to yield signs to improve traffic flow.

In my experience, Utahns treat stop signs like yield signs anyways. Utahns would likely see a yield sign as a "Go Faster" sign.
Hypocrisy | 4:39 p.m. June 3, 2008
Synchronizing stop lights is envrironmentally friendly, since cars that do not have to stop, idle, and accellerate get better gas mileage and emit less pollutants.

Why, then, do environmentalists fight to stop freeways, putting more cars in stop and go traffic on clogged freeways and surface streets? Isn't that worse for the environment? Does that mean environmentalists are more interested in pushing their agenda then doing what is best for the environment?

And I'm a liberal who supports mass transit.

Did someone really say Trax is a disaster? That person probably thinks George W. Bush is a good president.

SLC needs to develop a north exit of I-15? Great idea- how about 600 North. Oh, wait- that aleady exists.

Brilliant people today.

The traffic light situation at 400, 500 and 600 S. is the worst. It would be nice not to have to wait longer than 5-10 minutes at an intersection for the light to turn green.

As a software engineer with emphasis on automating movement with in factories and warehouses, etc., I remember talk of our company and others gaining a contract to do this sort of thing 30 years ago, and several times since.

I remember when there was quite a flutter about the sequencing of the N-S semaphors on 7th East until it reached 3900 S. where the state took control of the signals.

I remember many other attempts and talks of attempts at this kind of thing. I've been yearning for something to happen, really happen, during all that time.

I still yearn that it will happen. Maybe with new and, hopefully, more effective Salt Lake City and County mayors, it will this time.
