Your research on the soccer front is lacking. The Ogden Outlaws and BYU Cougers play in the United Soccer leagues, Premier Development League. They play during the summer and have many home games left. Check out ogdenoutlaws.com for more information. You can also go to uslsoccer.com to get more information about the PDL.

Bad soccer at that.

I think the research is right on.
Summer | 7:53 a.m. June 3, 2008
The best thing about summer sports and this article is that it is only 88 days until BYU and Utah begin their seasons. Let the countdown to the only sport that matters begin. I'll go to a few Bees games this year but I'll never go to a Real game. There are only so many days during the summer. A summer evening wasted at a soccer game is an evening of your life you can never get back people.

Get out of the road. You are going to cause a serious accident.
"The Other Football"? | 8:20 a.m. June 3, 2008
....or..."The Original football"

Also, RSL usually just blows the game in the last few minutes at AWAY matches. So, fortunately, come to a home game and you'll see us either win or tie.
Football and Basketball.... | 8:37 a.m. June 3, 2008
....you make it sound like those are sports that people still care about. Oh ya, my grandpa does....but those "old timer" sports fans are a dying breed.

Welcome to the new era. Where Soccer, LaCross, and MMA are taking over.
A note to drivers | 8:53 a.m. June 3, 2008
Watch out for bikers. You are going to cause a serious accident.

You do know that bikers have just as much legal right to the road as cars do, right? A biker would be totally within his rights to go 5 mph up a hill in the dead center of a lane of traffic, making all the cars behind him crawl along at the same speed unable to pass. Most of them are just considerate enough not to do it.

Oh, and go Real. The worst soccer game is better than the best baseball game. Baseball is like watching paint dry. Or as someone famous once said (I forget who it was), "where else can you find 12 seconds of action crammed in to 4 hours of coverage?"
RE: Anonymous | 8:56 a.m. June 3, 2008
But going and researching these things would waste too much of this dear writers time...why sacrifice time to make sure your article is accurate. Who in the deseret news would want to do that? haha. Poor research...if you're going to talk about something research it, no matter what it is. Then when someone reads it they can receive some good information instead of focusing on what information they have that the writer doesn't. Epic fail.
Where is that? | 9:09 a.m. June 3, 2008
Where in the world are soccer, lacrosse, and MMA taking over? In your fantasy world. The prime time MMA fights Saturday night had 4 million viewers. Cops had more viewers that night. You're right about soccer though. The MLS will soon pass the NFL in terms of popularity. 10,000 fans in 20,000 seat stadiums. Way to take over soccer.
It's only soccer | 9:27 a.m. June 3, 2008
Don't let the soccer fans that post messages get you worked up. It's only soccer. It was a good sport for my boy to play, until he was old enough to play football.
Re: A note to drivers | 9:40 a.m. June 3, 2008
Just because you have a legal right to the road doesn't mean it is safe. I don't know how many times I've had to slam on my brakes with my kids in the car because I can't swerve around the bikers because of oncoming traffic so you can ride up a hill at 5 mph. You bikers will put everyone else in danger on the roads so you can ride around in your tight little pants and tell everyone how you've got as much right to the road as everyone else. I also like how the bikers have all the rights of automobiles but they don't have to obey the laws. For example, driving through red lights. You can give your canned speech all you want but the fact is if a car is travelling up a road like the Mirror Lake Highway at 55 mph and they come around a blind corner and there is a biker going up the hill at 5 mph it is dangerous.
Get out of the road | 9:44 a.m. June 3, 2008
I spent two years riding a bike around in a suit and tie. I quickly learned to get out of the road or get run over.
To: A note to drivers and bikers | 9:55 a.m. June 3, 2008
As a biker and a driver I have beef with BOTH parties.

Bikers: You are right, you do have as much legal right to use the roads as drivers, but you also have as much legal right to obey traffic laws as drivers. I hate bikers that feel that because a car isn't coming they can blow a stop sign or a red light and it's OK. Respect the cars on the road if you want them to respect you.

Drivers: Bad bikers have given all bikers a bad rap. There are respectful, good bikers that are cautious and careful. Please don't give all of us a bad rap because of a few bad apples.

Utah is a soccer hotbed if you are under 14. RSL should be watched because it may not be here in 5 years. The pretty new stadium may eventually become the home of the new Salt Lake Valley University Bruins football team.

Who know's Jody, you may be the one who writes the story where Checketts threatens everyone that if attendance doesn't increase "to more than Larry gets" by the end of the season he will move the team to St Louis.

Summer's great. Play ball!
Part 1 | 12:44 p.m. June 3, 2008
As a tax payer, my taxes have gone towards numerous projects that I nor anyone in my family will ever use. Baseball stadium, hockey stadium, skate parks, county recreation centers, school districts (my kids go to private school), new roads that I will never drive on, and so on. But that is OK, because those are all things that improve the quality of life for the people around me that do use them. It would be selfish of me to demand that tax money should only be spent on the things that I want. "It's only soccer" is right. Most kids love the game but then switch to other sports later in life. Why? Because Daddy want's Jr. to be the next NFL QB or see him hit a home run in MLB. There has never really been a future for kids who wanted to play soccer. Well now there is and it will only get bigger if parents allow their kids to enjoy what they want without pushing their own judgements upon them. True it is for less $$ than the the major sports but should that really be the driving factor.
Where in the World? | 12:49 p.m. June 3, 2008
..has soccer taken over?...Umm, try everywhere in the world. And sure enough....its beginning to happen here as well.

Ya, football and baseball are fun, and then kids turn 12 and realize that they want to stay in shape in a sport that requires altheticism.

You've had your time...I'm sorry that you are being threatened.
BIKERS | 4:20 p.m. June 3, 2008
Right doesn't make it right. You may have the right to ride five mph and hold up traffic, but you're stupid to try it. Most drivers don't pay enough attention to see all the cars on the road. I certainly wouldn't risk it as a bike rider.
Be smart and stay out of the way, especially in low light and high traffic situations.

To the kid that said, "Soccer, lacrosse and MMA are taking over" You are only 1 for 3. MMA is taking off, but Soccer has about as good a chance as arena football at going mainstream. And Lacrosse...are you kidding me? What about Ultimate frisbee, badmiton, and crocket? Come on.
STEVE-O | 5:28 p.m. June 3, 2008
The truth is ESPN and other sports TV stations decide what is "mainstream"! I'm an NFL fan, but do we really need to watch the first 15 rounds of the Draft? I watch what comes on. So right now I'm watching the NBA Finals even though I HATE the teams that are playing. I'm watching the French Open. And soon I'll be watching the European Soccer cup! I wish MLS got some highlights on ESPN at night but they refuse to show them. We don't need to watch 300 baseball highlights, or talk about some horse that broke it's leg 2 months ago and died. SHOW US SOME SOCCER HIGHLIGHTS!
Trekker | 5:31 p.m. June 3, 2008
As an avid biker I agree we have the right but there is no chance I will risk it with Utah drivers. Regarding soccer, our kids have played for the past three years and all 5 of them enjoy it. However, all of us would prefer a Blaze game anyday over RSL. Can't afford the Jazz although we watch the games.
Football is awesome | 7:56 p.m. June 3, 2008
Let's face it. American football may be the greatest spectator sport ever. It has it all. I love it.

I also love the other football. It is awesome. While not the action packed slamfest of tackle football it is still great. It is ok to be a soccer fan and a football fan. Really. Go to a high school soccer game. About half the varsity team plays soccer, basketball, and football. Their both great. Having more sports options just makes sports fanatics lives better. RSL, Utah Jazz, BYU football bring it on!
Why the heck... | 10:53 p.m. June 3, 2008
does Salt Lake still have a soccer team? Didn't our government get the message that we don't want a money draining, boring sport? We are tired of the corporate welfare.
Tribune Rules | 12:16 a.m. June 4, 2008
Is this really a story? Get serious and keep the readers happy.
Re why the heck | 12:26 a.m. June 4, 2008
when you say "we", do you mean you and everyone else who couldnt fill up a petition?
Soccerman | 9:28 p.m. June 4, 2008
I love RSL, but the writer isn't far from the truth. RSL has a history of blowing games in the final minutes. And yes blowing a lead for a resulting tie is also blowing the game. We know it, the team knows, the fans know it, why are we ashamed when the local journalist has the guts to write about it?

I no longer live in Utah and think it is always humorous to read all the bickering that goes on in these comments sections. It's like recess in elementary school where the cool kids think they can bully everyone who isn't as enlightened as they are. Grow up Utah, why do so many get so upset about having another sports team around? The MLS season really only competes with baseball and since SLC doesn't have the MLB, I don't get what all the fuss is about. I can't stand watching baseball, but I don't feel the need to let everyone know about it at every chance I get, why waste the energy other than to get a reaction out of people?
RE: Soccerman | 2:21 p.m. June 5, 2008
Whether or not it is true, it is tactless for the "writer" to include that in the article.

Salt Lake Bees fans scramble to catch a foul ball. Bees games are among the myriad sporting activities to enjoy during the summer sports "dead zone."
