The author of Empire Express is David Haward Bain (not "Howard"). And it is a very good book. Where many other histories focus primarily upon the construction of the transcontinental railroad, Bain's book also takes us into the boardroom amid the back-door negotiations, rivalry and outright chicanery that occurred among the corporate leaders of the time. In my opinion, it is the best history of an event that was, in its' day, what the space shuttle is to us today.
