So I guess I have to vote for McCain. I don't really much care who he picks for VP, but I can tell you if he picks Huckabee, I'll sit this one out. I might sit it out anyway. Is there any place left for fiscal conservatives with moral convictions that aren't mormon-hating bigot nazis?
Obama is a joke | 3:55 p.m. May 30, 2008
Obama has only proved he can whip the less than deep thinkers into a frenzy. Big deal. A great public speaker doesn't a good president make. Obama is better suited to help motivate an obese nation loose the weight, not run a country. He is simply just another crack pot liberal attempting to sell an impossible dream to those dumb enough to believe he can make a difference. If he is president, nothing will change but the amount of taxes we all pay. I'm afraid not even his slick way with words will change the entrenched Washington elite. Average Joe America is screwed no matter who is elected, I would just rather keep more of my money while we are getting abused.

Thanks Brad Huntly -
That's the best Rush Limbaugh impression we've read today.
See you at the voting booth in November.

The article cited McCain's National Security expertise? McBush doesn't even know the difference between Sunni and Shiite or Iran and Alqaeda. McCain will keep the country on the same course it is now and Utah will vote for it because of the letter "R".

I'm not sure if Romney will be VP choice, but McCain does winn, Romney is a shoe-in for Sect. of the Treasury. In the past few days conservative columnist Charlie Reese had a column titled (in some newspapers)545 People. It is about both houses of Congress and their deficiencies. While it is easy to blame Bush (he is an easy target) about the economy, price of gas, etc. you should read this article to see where Reese puts the blame. I agree with his assessment along with the reminder that McCain, Clinton and Obama share in that blame. My vote is for "None of the Above."

To "Won't Matter":
[["Nobody loves Hussein, but he is THE alternative to John-stay-in-Iraq-forever McCain."]]

You do know Hussein is dead, right?

To Josh:
[["Romney could deliver Republican Utah to McCain in a general election. That's a lot of electoral votes right there."]]

You're joking, right? I just point this out because some people may actually take that statement seriously. Firstly, Utah's electoral votes are really not that much. Secondly, Utah's going to the Republican candidate no matter who's on the ticket. It's just a simple fact.

Welcome to Utah.
Land of the deep-thinkers.

John McBush and his running mate Mitt Romney.

Yet another GOP Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum.

At least they're staying the course on that.
RL | 4:46 p.m. May 30, 2008
Even though Romney would be the perfect choice for money, economic, healthcare, and just plain decent guy... he won't get picked because of the all the bad press thanks to the FLDS. No matter how UN-FLDS he and other REAL LDS people are, the fact is the national press has made sure that everyone thinks we are the same in some way. There is no way McCain will pick him for that reason alone. Thanks so much FLDS for the free smear campain!!!
Romney.... | 4:51 p.m. May 30, 2008
knows how to play the Business and Political games. Helping McCain with all these fund-raising will prove beneficial to both his future business ventures and political ambitions. Knowing powerful people in high places sure helps in today's society. So even if he is not VP, he is writing his own ticket into the circle of the elite and powerful...
RockOn | 4:57 p.m. May 30, 2008
Please, Mitt, stay nice but turn down the VP if offered swiftly. You won't be offered (he brings no electoral votes), but if you are, just say no. You've got better things ahead.

As for the election: Obama is a thin-skinned demagogue with no experience and McCain is a thin-skinned waffler and confused fellow. The worst two candidates since McGovern and Nixon.

Write in Mitt.
If for no other reason...... | 5:23 p.m. May 30, 2008
Wish Romney would be chosen as VP. It would be so worth it just to witness the total and complete hysteria of the evangelical Christians. I can't even begin to tell you pandemonium this would create. The uproar here in Oklahoma alone would deafen the entire universe. :)
Ace Ventura | 5:24 p.m. May 30, 2008
I'm reading a lot of posts asserting that compatibility is a prerequisite when choosing a running mate. Sorry, that one doesn't fly. Read your history--most candidates for president barely tolerate their running mate (Bush-Cheney is a rare exception). This is politics, not marriage. The only time they'll be in the same room during the campaign is at the convention and on election night. Getting elected is the name of the game. You cover your demographic and skillset weaknesses with your running mate's strengths, ideally creating a complete picture of strength for your target voters.

What happens after the election is secondary (sorry to sound cynical), although the smartest presidents have assessed their veeps' strengths and made them an integral part of the team. It not only strengthens the administration, but idle/bored VPs have a tendency to cause trouble.

RE Mitt's conservative credentials, I again point you to his CPAC speech (check YouTube & listen to the entire speech) for a read on how core conservatives view the man. Don't be deceived by the naysayers on this board--Mitt has them eating out of his hand.

RE religion--not sure it's an issue when the other choice is Barack Obama.
Southern Mormon | 5:38 p.m. May 30, 2008

As a southeastern mormon living in evangelical country, I do not want to see Romney become the Vice-President. These Evangelicals will suspend all sermons on the Bible, Christ, and love so they can attack the Mormons. Some of these people are still getting over blacks in politics, blacks and Mormons could send them into a rage!
Republicans very nervous | 5:38 p.m. May 30, 2008
Republicans haven't made any secret of their fear that 2008 could be a very bad year for the party's congressional candidates. But former Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist, who was once the party's majority leader, took the public fretting to another level in a recent fundraising e-mail he sent on behalf of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

In the e-mail, which was sent out under the subject line "Democrats Win Landslide Victory," Frist writes:

I have a real fear of waking up to this headline after the elections this fall ... In key states, news accounts indicate Democrats are outpacing Republicans registering voters. We also know Barack Obama's campaign is utilizing the Internet to raise record amounts of money to support his campaign and Democrats nationally ... all in the hope that new voters and record resources will produce a Democrat landslide victory this fall.

There's so much at risk, and conservatives I talk with from all across the country are feeling the rumblings of "what could be." But we must urgently realize that is "what WILL be" if we don't energize our grassroots and get to work right away.

I don't think McCain's mother could keep still if her son picks Romney as a running mate. She is very vocal about her hatred of Mormons. But, maybe McCain is wise enough to look beyond her prejudice. Who knows. I just don't think it's going to happen.
ROMNEY FOREVER | 6:02 p.m. May 30, 2008
I applaud Ace Ventura's comment. Wow that was a great post. Love Gov. Romney and I just love being a Mormon as well. I am not a devil worshipper, the name The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints is the Church of Jesus Christ and He is the one we worship not the devil. Men, how blind can people get. It is so simple and so TRUE. Just Read our ARTICLES OF FAITH and that will tell everyone what we believe in. I don't see how the Church's excommunication of members that don't follow the doctrine will be an issue on the public leadership. Church and State are separate unless it is the Second Coming already tomorrow.
Doesn't matter | 6:17 p.m. May 30, 2008
Republicans will lose!!!! Ha ha ha ha.
Believe me folk we're going to be dancing in the street come November when we get rid of this horrible criminal administration and all you conservatives are going to be sent to the back of the bus! I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!
No to McCain | 6:21 p.m. May 30, 2008
As an Arizonan, I wouldn't vote for McCain, no matter who his running mate is. I think he is using Romney's money raising ability--whether Romney is going along for future connections, I don't know, but in a political sense, it would be wise. However, if I were McCain, I'd pick Huckabee to bring in the "conservatives" and the "evangelicals" both areas where McCain is weak, weak, weak.
In fact, McCain's voting record has more in common with the Democrats than with mainline republicans. Our choice is Obama--not very experienced, questionable business deals, educated in elite schools but trying to identify with working class and poor blacks, and very, very left wing. Hillary--lots of scandal in her background, some of it hers, very, very left wing, and while she gets the feminist vote, not really experienced, unless you count being married to a polotician, and McCain, old, liberal voting record, and tarred with the Bush record. Possible Libertarian candidate, but I don't think a third party will fly this time.

Pray (or light a candle, burn some incense, cross your fingers--whatever works for you)--America is in trouble.
2nd Coming and Politics | 6:31 p.m. May 30, 2008
McBush and Romney.
Both are legendary for their quick tempers.
That's all we need are two loose-cannons just itching to press the red button in the White House.

There is some legitimate discussion that they feel a world-war will usher in The Second Coming.

No, thank you. I'd rather let God usher in that scenario - not any slimy politician.
socalmon | 6:53 p.m. May 30, 2008
No doubt, Romney would marshall more big cash for the Reps. But also, more of the hard working blokes, like myself, who want what little 401K money they have, to go farther in today's economy, would be more optimistic about our future, with a MONEY guy with brains, instead of a TAX AND SPEND guy like Mr. O. True, the Reps will have a very tough time, with Bush's shortcomings and the stigma of that. However, people still remember Jimmy Carter. And unfortunely, Obama won't shine in this topic, THE ECONOMY, as he is very Jimmy Carteresque.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah my prayers were answered - Romney touted as VP choice - get use to it.

For 4 more years........

REPUBLICANS TAKE THE WHITE HOUSE, The US House and also The US Senate.

BET ON IT - it's a sure bet to.
To Brother Schroeder | 7:17 p.m. May 30, 2008
Wake up! Wake up!! You're dreaming, or maybe it's more of a nightmare...the Republicans are done, maybe for good, or at least we can only hope.
Brother Chuck Schroeder | 7:32 p.m. May 30, 2008
McCain for President in 2009. Our next president cannot just talk about leadership; they must demonstrate it. Senator Obama is the chairman of an important subcommittee that has oversight of our efforts in Afghanistan. Yet he has not held one hearing on Afghanistan, a place where young Americans are in harm's way every day. When a chairman of a subcommittee can't lead, it's bad; when a president doesn't lead, it's unacceptable. It's clear Senator Obama was driven to his position on the War in Iraq by his ideology and not by the facts on the ground. He does not have the knowledge or experience to make the judgments necessary to keep our Nation safe, prosperous and strong. Presidents have to listen and learn. Presidents have to make judgments no matter how popular or unpopular they may be.

Romney for VP (and then President!)
re: southern mormon | 9:24 p.m. May 30, 2008
You are probably correct! I'm a Catholic in the "good ole south" and I've heard many comments from my southron friends and co-workers. YOu know their man was Huckabee too. But I must say this, wouldn't it be the same in Utah for non-mormons???
JimBobDandyMcFly | 9:25 p.m. May 30, 2008
Obama will shake things up for four years. the country will WAKE UP for a change (last time was 911) and then Romney will settle in for 8 years of leadership and then the millenium will be upon us.
Anonymous | 9:49 p.m. May 30, 2008
I guess some of you are not paying much attention to the news. McCain doesn't know whether we're fighting the Sunis or Shi'ites. He doesn't know what Iran's involvement is. He doesn't know what the troop strength currently is or how many more are already scheduled to be deployed. And, supposedly, the military and defense is his *strength*.

He's already said publicly that he's weak on the economy and that's the biggest immediate challenge we have. Without a strong and functioning economy he wouldn't be able to afford the war effort.

McCain's best years were over a decade ago. He's lost it and it's showing publicly when someone like Lieberman or Graham has to be there to whisper the corrections in his ear.

Meanwhile, Romney can't even keep track of his gardeners let alone an immigration crisis. If there's another Republican administration you can kiss this country goodbye because it will be all over.
Anonymous | 10:37 p.m. May 30, 2008
Should people who read a newspaper that doesn't even report that the President's Press Secretary has revealed that he regularly had to lie for the administration be allowed to vote?

Anyone can vote for what they *wish* were true. But what this country needs is people who are informed and grounded in reality for a change.
Anonymous | 10:39 p.m. May 30, 2008
obama's going to talk to enemies...then he's not. He loves his pastor...then he doesn't believe anything he says. He hates NAFTA...but then tells Canada it's not going anywhere. It will be fun to watch Obama implode.
And, his preachers rant is EXACTLY what is wrong with the democratic party. They want, need, and encourage total dependency on the system. If there is never fault, there is never responsibility or a drive to improve...i What a fool.
re Southern Mormon responder | 12:25 a.m. May 31, 2008
The LDS church does not preach against ANY other religion. Our Articles of Faith make it clear that we believe in allowing all men to worship any way they like, or no way at all. You won't ever hear any bad mouthing of other churches from any LDS pulpit, just the opposite. Now having said that are there individual Mormons who may be prejudiced, well what do you think in a church of 13 million members???? Trust me they are not hearing that from the church leaders as opposed to some churches who actually teach classes against Mormons, speak against them from their pulpits, write and distribute pamphlets against the LDS and gather at large LDS meetings to jeer and taunt the members. They think that's a Christian attitude??
Please support the person you feel is best qualified for the job not because of his religious faith.
Good Choice | 12:50 a.m. May 31, 2008
Romney would be a good choice. Only EXTREME idiots would confuse Romney with the FLDS and we all know those people rarely vote anyway! :) Other than fund raising, Romney would help motivate the majority of the conservative "right wing" portion of the party as shown in prior polls. Yes, although baptists would prefer a baptist preacher for a candidate, polls showed they understand Romney is the only true conservative candidate that agrees with their same values. McCain is too liberal for many republicans, so Romney would help balance this out and mobilize the Republicans that are otherwise indifferent with two otherwise bad choices.

Additionally, Obama has been taking a beating the past month or so with the revelation that for 30 years, he has supported his church's preacher's who are on record as being anti-american and racist against white people. Comments by his wife further support this and it has recently scared a large numbers of voters who were previously on the fence because they knew very little about this far left liberal extremist. Many polls show Obama slipping well behind McCain and as the ads continue to focus on this closer to election, Obama will have no chance!
CougarKeith | 1:53 a.m. May 31, 2008
McCain isn't even going to get my vote, unless Romney or Rice are on the ticket! The guy (McCain) is a 190% lying politician who I do not trust with anything except our national defense. He is a Liberal wearing Republican Colors and military sleeves. He is the Best of the WORST as far as Mainstream candidates go. Ralph Nader gets my "Protest Vote" at this point in time, at least that way I voted and can still complain!
Mitt Romney is a NO GO | 5:45 a.m. May 31, 2008
Romney already had his chance; we decided "NO", remember? He holds no convictions beyond his own advancement. No thanks.
Brother Chuck Schroeder | 6:16 a.m. May 31, 2008
Guess what? - McCain for President in 2009 BETTER start doing something about this right now. The factors contributing to the current gasoline prices, that Republicans have been a strong supporter of initiatives to develop and adopt new technologies, demanding to build more "moon-shine-stills, where researchers described the potential for cellulosic ethanol production and industry leaders reported on their plans to build more alternative fuel station in Florida and throughout the United States", but the question of "double talk" still remains, WHY DON'T THEY WRITE UP THE PROPER WORDING IN A BILL, and DEMAND THAT BIG OIL INVEST THEIR HUGE QUARTERLY PROFIT'S or 2/3 of it INTO REFINERIES to REFINE the stock piles of crude we have laying around in our OWN barrels here in America per se, from the LARGEST OIL STRIKE IN UTAH, as well as other States to, and turn it into gas for our cars now with the added 10% per gal moonshine?. This was NOT DONE in the past 30 years. WHY?.
Brother Chuck Schroeder | 6:29 a.m. May 31, 2008
Mitt, Crist n The Boys let the illegals flow for more votes?. Did you know that on May 17, over 200 people attended the official opening of the Republican Party of Florida's new Miami Victory Office. The Miami Victory Office will house RPOF staff along with representatives from the McCain Campaign and local congressional races. The opening marks the first of the 2008 Election Cycle and is part of a unified effort, coming on the heels of the RPOF Hispanic Leadership Conference, to more effectively share the Republican message with the diverse Miami community. On Wednesday and Thursday, the Republican Party of Florida held voter registration events outside the Miami Convention Center, welcoming over 15,000 new citizens, several hundred of whom celebrated their new citizenship by registering to vote. As Governor Crist often says, there is no higher office than citizen. The right to vote is a sacred part of our belief that each person should have a say in who makes their laws and is a freedom oppressed people around the world can only dream of. So in short, McCain n the boys, the "right-wing," THINK they ARE unimportant in politics anymore?.
Donna | 7:04 a.m. May 31, 2008
Mitt Rommey is the Only choice for VP. America You Must Wake Up and see the trouble that were in.

Most people are not seeing we have two choices to vote for President, One is Good and the other is Evil. By their fruits we will know which one is the right choice. We need the right one for a change.
The right one will save our hides for a few more years. The other one will bring us to our knees.
orion | 7:13 a.m. May 31, 2008
Romney as VP? Just a pie-in-the-sky Utah fantasy, folks.
Shadow | 7:12 a.m. May 31, 2008
Oh, this requires comment.

Romney as vp? Note: he cannot carry Mass. He might be able to help in Michigan, but after the pandering there? Hmmm. Latest polls show that a O-C ticket carries Michigan by 7 points. Romney also gives the south to the democrats. Restructuring the old line ups. Lots of anti-Mormon sentiment below the Mason-Dixon line. Many Americans cannot separate FLDS from LDS (who can?) and the Baptists will get out the vote. Romney will help carry Utah, Idaho... and there it stops.

Romney can help with the money. But the RNC has caught up in the funds race. McCain is a little behind, but he will crank up the race-baiting and the fear of terrorists slogans and get most of the money he needs. Money will not be a problem come October. McCain also has great name recognition already.

Crist of Florida is a favorite of those who can count delegates. He gives Florida to the repubs. Helps carry the south. Excellent tv image. Can actually walk and talk at the same time. Photogenic, oratorical, no baggage.

Hope seems to be eternal in Utah. But Mcain will not choose Romney.

The Shadow Knows.
Off-term Elections | 7:46 a.m. May 31, 2008
The Democratic Party will increase its majority in the Congress this November. They swept the off-term elections and every indication is that they will gain seats in both houses of Congress.

The presidential race will be a dead heat, but it doesn't really matter who wins. Whether they just take your money (Democrats) or tell you they won't take your money and take it anyway (Republicans), you are still out money to finance ridiculous things.

No one usually cares who the VP will be. People may care with McCain because he is so old. He is just the weaker candidate if people care who his running mate is.
ScottAZ | 9:17 a.m. May 31, 2008
I don't think Mitt is the right choice for VP this year. I think McCain is a losing horse no matter who his VP selection is. Maybe Mitt in 2012. Our job, our mission, is to educate the less informed about the truth of our religion. Their are people out there who actually believe that we praise the devil, don't believe in Jesus Christ, have many wives, ect ect. These untruths have been passed down from generation to generation as truths, and held as untruths by the power of bigotry and hatred. Do not hate them back. Love them and pray for them that the spirit will soften their hearts and allow the truth to touch them. You all have an absolutely wonderful day!
Mo-Town | 9:22 a.m. May 31, 2008
I would love nothing more that to see Romney get his hands around this stale economy and just turn it completely upside down. If you think that's beyond his capablities, you're a complete fool with absolutely no credibility when it comes to money.

Having said that, I hope McCain goes elsewhere for the VP nod. This country needs to be swallowed up by the depths of liberalism before folks finally get it again. That happened with Reagon replacing Jimmy Carter before folks eventually forgot. That happened with Bush replacing Bill Clinton before folks once again forgot. If people know what's good for them, Romney will lead the new revolution in 2012 to replace a disaster of a presdient that Obama is certain to be (unless he does the exact opposite of what he said he will)

Left Wing Zealots laugh now, but that laughter will geadually get softer and softer as he gets further into the White House. Independents will be the ones kicking themselves the most, because they really should have known better.

Romney gets the War on Terror, finally has the social issues right, and most importantly, is an economic wizard that's knows where prosperity stems from.
Sandy | 9:29 a.m. May 31, 2008
Romney would be a good choice for McCain. He would be silly not to accept him as VP. McCain is already deciding if he can work with Romney or anyone else. I would be surprised if Romney isn't picked. I don't know any of the other men that he's considering. They haven't talked enough in the media for me to know them. Romney has all the credentials. Go McCain, Go Romney!

Crusader Romney belongs to the right religion, maybe yours is wrong, on the other hand no religion is wrong its only our perspective are short sighted becoz we have blinded them and the enormous bias ur referring to does not matter as they are like you crusader misunderstood who understood Christ well when he was on the earth huh??, Romney is your only rescue America if you want to know what would happen to you guys and your future have faith and put Romney in his position---VP. God bless America and the Mccain Romney team.
Another Perspective | 10:42 a.m. May 31, 2008
Hillary must hang in there. She is clearly the best chance the Dems have to defeat the Republicans. All of this talk about uniting behind a "46-year-old black guy" is hogwash. The Primary in-fighting and the Comrade Obama baggage which is revealing itself almost on a daily basis has hopelessly fractured the Democrat party and shown Obama for what he is--just another silver-tongued, run-of-the-mill, self-serving, overly ambitious politician (with an overly ambitious wife) who will do ANYTHING to get elected. You people who are predicting an Obama/Democrat landslide in November are whistling in the dark. What do you call a politician who has the youth vote? A loser.
ronald | 1:14 p.m. May 31, 2008
Obama is the only candidate who actually is promoting change. He is obviously well educated, experienced, and open to new ideas.

McCain is still fighting vietnam. He can't tell his shiite from his sunni. He has admitted over and over that he does not understand economics.

Please, elect Obama and give us a chance to recover from the Bush disaster.
geezergary | 2:58 p.m. May 31, 2008
"The Doctor" thinks this is another "article seed" from the Romney camp to put pressure on JM. Clearly the doctor is out. This piece was written by someone from the Boston Globe for crying out loud! Mitt has never had any friends at the Globe.
Jon | 4:32 p.m. May 31, 2008
hey RONALD, wake up and smell the coffee!!...er perhaps the hot chocolate?

Any change Obama is going to implement will NOT be good for this country. Yeah, he can change things but I'm betting most of the country will regret it. Change for change sake is not a good enough reason to ruin the USA. With mentors like Wright and Pfleger...you want this guy making changes????

How can you say Obama is the only candidate promoting change? That has been Romney's platform for the past year. And he has experience to back it up. Meanwhile, the "Pied Piper of Change" just spouts rhetoric and everyone cheers and screams for Obama the rock star. Are you getting sucked in with the rest of the crowd??? Keep following them and you'll find yourself at the top of some tall and spacious building with plenty to laugh and point your fingers at.
Anon | 5:42 p.m. May 31, 2008
Obama is for change alright.

As he stated it: This is the greatest country on earth today, let's change it!

I'd rather keep it great and improve it not change it and make it worse as Obama wants.
