BYU is a cut above | 9:55 a.m. May 30, 2008
As they came to us, they came of their own regard. We will not recruit players while they are on their missions. That's not our policy. But when they do contact us, we'll certainly listen."

That's Awesome! Makes perfect sense. Bronco is a class act. He has already rebuilt a great program. Who wouldn't want to play for him? Of course he'll listen when players come calling on their own. And he doesn't have to listen to the naysayers, since he is following the criteria as quoted above, because that policy is fair and honorable to all involved.

Sure, missionaries should focus on the missionary work first and foremost, but if decisions for their future come up which require current preparations in order to carry out future plans they should also attend to those preparations with haste. All missionaries make certain plans to return to life again, and those who say otherwise are the hypocrites. If you're of that group, BYU and its recruits hear your sad refrain, but why should they listen? If you could play for BYU instead of UNLV or USU or most Division I programs right now, you would be stupid not to choose BYU.
Nice one Cougars | 9:56 a.m. May 30, 2008
As a Ute fan, I personally think it is great that BYU is poaching recruits from Utah State and UNLV. Two great years under Bronco has resulted in you stealing players from two of the worst college football teams in the country. Meanwhile, Utah has been poaching players from Oklahoma and USC!...........For the lame cougar fans saying that cougar fans don't comment on Utah articles, that is ridiculous and you know it. Just because you don't doesn't mean all of the other zoobies aren't.
punter | 9:57 a.m. May 30, 2008
12 years ago I had my parents call BYU's special teams coach pel1a to see if I could punt for them after my mission, he wrote a letter to me offering me a scholarship. How come no one talked about me like this? I feel cheated! This has been going on forever and will continue to happen, I don't know why it is such an issue now.

Signs of Success | 10:01 a.m. May 30, 2008
Wow the bitterness against BYU is strong. It reminds me of the good old days when BYU was in the top 25 annually kicking everyone's behind. It is beginning to happen again and opponents are jealous because right now BYU is really good and getting better. On top of that they are doing it with kids with higher standards (not perfect, but better than the past). Opposing teams scream murder and unfairness every way they can.

I can understand their pain though. Not too many years ago BYU was in alot of pain and it hurt to lose players to other programs in better shape at the time. It is good to see these signs of success. Even better to see good players that recognize it and want to play at BYU.

Bronco was very carefull not to initiate contact with these kids. These kids (or their families) initiated contact with BYU because that is where they want to be. There isn't one coach in America that feels it is unethical to talk to a recruitable kid that comes to them and wants to play for their school. These bitter posts are just signs that BYU is again successful.
Non-belivwe | 10:03 a.m. May 30, 2008
My peoblem is that Mendenhall if pretending to be something that he is not. He needs to down from his ivory tower.

To Haters: LDS people are not better than anyone else We are not more righeous nor perfect. Where do you get off saying that. Obviously you don't pay any attention to the brethren when they talk. If you are a member of the LDS church you ought to be ashamed of that comment.

Mendenhall needs to stopo claiming how righeous and perfect his program is and he is. He needs to tone down his reteric when he talks at firesides, press conferences and at church. BYU is the most hated football team in the conference.
Wonder why????? Mendenhallhas a winning program. He does not have to answer to anyone. He can say and do what he wants. Now the losing coaches at BYU are on their way out.
Apples and Oranges Bowls | 10:07 a.m. May 30, 2008
"Utah played in the Vegas Bowl."

...back when it was an also ran bowl, NOT the bowl for the conference champion

BYU played in the Fiesta Bowl

...back when it WAS the bowl for the conference champion, but loooong before it became a BCS bowl or the BCS Championship bowl
Get it straight | 10:07 a.m. May 30, 2008
Bronco's recruiting quote stated he would not be selling his program to missionaries who had not sought him first. Coach Higgins should have told Coach Favero exactly that. Then, if Riley through his family initiated conctact, he could've then replied, "Sure, we're interested." The Riley situation did not pass Bronco's (not BYU's), but Bronco's personal policy. The Te'o situation passes with flying colors.

Last signing day, Bronco stated he didn't want players who weren't fully committed to the BYU experience. Nothing in his statements prohibits a player from changing his mind and becoming fully committed to the BYU experience, as Nelson and Te'o have now done.

People need to realize that Dick is a columnist(like Dear Abby) and not a reporter. Reporters are supposed to report FACTS. Columnists give opinions. What seperates most columnists from Dick is that most of them use a little bit of the facts in arriving at their opinion. Dick has an opinion and then only uses the facts that may support that opinion.
Shadow? | 10:11 a.m. May 30, 2008
First, BYU is hypocritical. First they complain about Olson leaving mid-mission and say he didn't "honor" his word. A few years later, "the kid just changed his mind." Funny how the explaination for the change is different and completely moral when you are the benefactor.

Second, no more BYU fans talking about how Utah is in the "shadow" of BYU, especially when they talk about the Vegas Bowl??? Fact is that all Bronco and the TDS can talk about is getting to a BCS bowl. Seeing how Utah has already done that...seems BYU is in Utah's shadow. ByU wants a unbeaten season??? Utah has done that too. Based on BYU's goals this upcoming year, it seems that they are looking to acheive what Utah has ALREADY achieved. Who's in whose shadow?????
Jack | 10:12 a.m. May 30, 2008
Peace, peace be unto you...all you football fans in Utah, stop airing your displeasures and disappointments about others decision. Go to work, take care of your families and serve thy neighbours. Love one another and remember why the pioneers left and settles in Utah. Don't let others decision control your thoughts and action. Now I have to go to work and take care of my family because those young men decisions not going to put food on the table for me...much Alohas to the Utah fans......
Anonymous | 10:14 a.m. May 30, 2008
Life does go on after a mission. Missionaries have to decide what school they are going to go to when they come home even if they don't play football. They have their parents register them for classes or apply to a college if they haven't been attending there previously. Good grief people stop making a huge deal out of something that isn't a huge deal. Most missionaries can handle thinking about their future without disrupting their work. Some can't, but it isn't football recruiting that is the problem, but the missionaries attitude to begin with.
Re: Ute fans are A JOKE | 10:16 a.m. May 30, 2008
You can always tell a bandwagon fan when they don't know even their RECENT history. Since the inception of the MWC, the Utes have claimed 3 conference championships. The cougars have claimed 4. Probably another "cougar definition" of "dominance" (please ignore that the cougars have gone 4-5 against the Utes in that same time frame).

I'm a UTE fan/alumnus that really couldn't care less who the Y recruits during an athlete's mission, nor how hypocritical Y coaches may be. Utes have known for years that the team down south has always been, and will always be, that way.
Anonymous | 10:18 a.m. May 30, 2008
I respect what Coach Mendenhall has accomplished and done the program. If BYU was out recruiting missionaries while they were serving, I believe that the church leadership would put an end to that in a heartbeat. It's a different situation if the player or his family contact the school. They would be stupid not to look into the situations.
Cougar dreaming | 10:21 a.m. May 30, 2008
3 schools have made a BCS bowl from a non BCS conference.

1) Utah
2) Boise State
3) Hawaii

RE: Are We Naive? | 10:21 a.m. May 30, 2008
Good points. I have to believe that BYU probably explained to this (during recruitment) kid's parents that if he didn't enroll at UNLV before his mission and a spot was made available at BYU, his parents could contact BYU after a year into the mission. I would have done the same had I been Bronco but it leads to some "gray" area. I believe there is some gray areas in all college programs. BYU get more grief because they are supposed to be "above board" in all aspects. We're finding that BYU thletics isn't really a shining beacon when it comes to integrity. Football is simply entertainment and most entertainment is dirty. Bronco is simply playing the same dirty games (to get an edge) that all the other coaches play. If BYU didn't play the dirty games, they wouldn't play at the same caliber. That is a fact!
JUST STOP | 10:21 a.m. May 30, 2008
BYU may have the best program in Utah but thats not an accomplishment
Commitment | 10:21 a.m. May 30, 2008
There is nothing hypocritical about Bronco wanting players who can keep commitments and Bronco supporting a player (or coach or student) who decides to change schools.

People with half a brain can understand that the two are not mutually exclusive.

Get it straight | 10:24 a.m. May 30, 2008
Oh, and I'll fully admit that chasing Chow off and hiring Crowton were two huge mistakes. Trying to hire Kyle was a mistake, but thankfully KWhit didn't make us pay for that one.

Lookee there! A Cougar fan that admitted not one, not two, but three mistakes to you. And you were clamoring for anyTHING.
Disappointed | 10:24 a.m. May 30, 2008
While not a fan of the WHY! This just furthers the hypocrisy. Bronco, you should have a form letter that responds to each parent, brother, sister, agent etc who may contact you regarding a missionary. It should read "I'm sorry, but in light of the fact that your son is serving a mission for the Lord byu will not discuss his future until he returns home. Thank you for your interest. Bronco"
Parents shame on you. byu leadership shame on you.
As a U of U fan, I feel the same Urban, shame on you for talking out of both sides of your mouth.
michael | 10:30 a.m. May 30, 2008

It might have been a trickle before but from now on every BYU athlete that is on a mission will be fair game. BYU is on the upside here but will soon be poached at a level not seen before. Bronco - turn about is fair play.
NCAA Rules Question | 10:38 a.m. May 30, 2008
Mentioned earlier is that the rule of not losing one year's eligibility for transferring was only applicable to LDS missionaries. If a player were to do 2 years in the Peace Corps, could he then transfer without losing a year of eligibility?
brerabbit | 10:40 a.m. May 30, 2008
Which is more distracting to a missionary, to fret his entire mission, evan "discussing it with investigators", or making the decision early and moving on with the work at hand? for my part, the successful people I know, make their decisions based on the best information they have at the time and move on. When factors change or new information comes to light they make a new decision and move on. That doesn't mean their principles have been compromised or that the initial decision was wrong. Personally I look for an entertaining year of great football from all our schools. the stronger the teams the better the compitition. One strong team in a conference will never get national recognition. Go Utes! Work on all MWC teams! but mostly Go Cougars!
not a coach but | 10:39 a.m. May 30, 2008
hahahaha! Funny crying message boarders. What do you expect the BYU coaches to do? Ignore good players that want to play for them? Should they tell them, "oh contact us when you are off your mission and it is too late for you and for us to make plans."

Come on! Find something intelligent to be bitter about.
It Happens | 10:40 a.m. May 30, 2008
Players change their minds all the time. Players leave successful programs to go to marginal programs. Players leave marginal programs to go to successful programs.

In the end, the only opinion that really matters is the player making the decision. He has his own reasons for making his decision.

Some missionaries change their minds a leave BYU. Some decide to come to BYU.

Fans can argue all they want about right and wrong, but, in the end, unless NCAA rules have been broken, if you're looking to place blame, the only person you can blame is the player, and the player has just as much right to change his mind about where to play as any other person making a personal decision.

It's just a game,

...both on and off the field.
2nd-hand experience | 10:43 a.m. May 30, 2008
I was companion with a well-known BYU player who's currently in the NFL who was recruited by a school outside of BYU during his mission. BYU didn't start its recruiting until after the other school did. The other school was much more agressive than BYU, but it didn't affect his missionary service one bit. He was up in the air for a month or so, made his decision, and stuck to it.

I don't see a problem here.
Hey Shadow boy: | 10:43 a.m. May 30, 2008
Come back and talk when you get a National Title. In the meantime enjoy spending your days hating on BYU because that is more fun than following your sorry team. It must be cold in that shadow.
Re: Nice one Cougars | 10:45 a.m. May 30, 2008
Maybe with us poaching players from UNLV, you will have a chance to score a touchdown and beat them this year!!!

Don't talk smack about schools that used you as scrimmage.
MN Cougar | 10:48 a.m. May 30, 2008
I love it. If you can't beat them on the field, try to bad-mouth them to death. The aggies and ewe make ankle biting an Olympic sport.
Re: Shadow? | 10:54 a.m. May 30, 2008
Come on man --- really? That's your articulate argument? If history is history... BYU 1984 Undefeated "NATIONAL CHAMPS!" That's a one up on the UofU undefeated "FIESTA BOWL!" You don't erase shadows just because your team has done a better accomplishment in more recent years. Fact is, BYU has accomplished more over the last 25 years than the U. Granted Utah had a few good seasons, but that doesn't mean BYU is know in Utah's shadow.

If you want to go point for point - BYU will prove to be a mountain over a mole-hill in comparison to the Utes.
JC | 10:53 a.m. May 30, 2008
It is looking more like a pattern and no longer an isolated event. We may be looking at the new BYU athletics recruiting policy.

A couple questions to ponder: how many Mission Presidents would enthusiastically introduce BYU recruiters to their missionaries when they come calling, and reject recruiters from USC, UCLA, AFA, LSU, OSU, UofU, BSU, etc? And how many of those Mission Presidents are BYU alums or fans?

Seems like a two-faced abuse of the church's Missionary program. Hmmm - or perhaps it is church's missionary department that has changed: the definition of a convert now includes a missionary athlete who switches to BYU.

...and regarding Ben Olson, I believe it was 'Elder' Olson who contacted UCLA first - not the other way around.

Re: Shadow? | 10:53 a.m. May 30, 2008
Show us your NCAA Football Championship trophy!

BYU - 1984
Utah - none

Show us your Heisman trophy!

BYU - Ty Detmer
Utah - none

Show us your conference Football Championship trophy!

BYU - 23 (19 WAC/4 MWC)
Utah - 5 (2 WAC/3 MWC)

then you can talk about Utah not being in the shadow of BYU football anymore.

Hypocrite? | 10:58 a.m. May 30, 2008
I would much rather be labeled a hypocrite than judgemental. In this case, the hypocrisy is debateable leaning on the side of Bronco. If the family, school, and mission president did not object than the rest of us petty know it alls don't count. When I see a statement from a mission president saying that Bronco overstepped I will be upset.
Asking Too Much | 10:59 a.m. May 30, 2008
The simple fact here is that BYU fans will never admit that their football program or school did something wrong. Most of us are not that different really. Fans will always associate their team with their school, which in this case is associated with their religion. Asking somebody to find fault in their religion is an extremely tall order. Those of us with the ability to separate the sports team from the religion can find fault and see things from a clearer, more objective point of view. But asking someone who sees no real difference between the two is asking too much.
Adam | 11:10 a.m. May 30, 2008
Some of you people act like Bronco has secret agents going into the mission field and stealing recruits. These missionaries are big boys now and their parents are well informed. I hear no compaints about them being forced to transfer.
As for Bronco, he would be equally scrutinized if he failed to land any missionary recruits. I am sure the AD expects a certain number of athletes to change their mind. People are really reaching for reasons to gripe about Bronco and BYU. This would be a silly recruiting dicussion in the SEC.
As for as the NCAA rules regarding missionaries and transfers, well this may be a real issue. I could easily see them changing the rule to lose a year of eligibility. However, this shifts the balance of power in fovar of the school and away from the athlete.
No hypocracy | 11:09 a.m. May 30, 2008
Where is the hypocracy? Mendenhall only said that he would be very carefull about contacting missionaries regarding football. Again, BYU made no initial contact with this boy, the boy initiated it. The hypocracy is all you anit cougs who complain that BYU is holier than thou but then you hold them to standards that you deem okay for Utah, Utah St or whoever. Go cougs and keep taking the best talent so we can hear the other schools continue to cry...MWC champs again.
HELLLLLPPPPP!!! | 11:11 a.m. May 30, 2008
I agree that how would the parents in HAWAII know to do this-Better yet-how would people in HAWAII have another son playing at TIMPVIEW in Provo.. BYU did not lose their Rick's college-they just reinstated it in TIMPVIEW high school right there in Provo- The UHSAA better take a better look now at things that are brewing in Provo.
Thanks for the HUMOR | 11:13 a.m. May 30, 2008
To Naive: BYU has recruited in Hawaii for years, especially out of Kahuku High School.

To "Mom won't send her kids to Bronco's firesides": Too bad, that was an incredible fireside, incredible spirit, and motivational for myself and my wife.

To BSU fans: Do you really live in Boise, or did you HAVE to move there because of job requirements?

To Shadow: I can guarantee I am not even remotely interested in posting something on a Utah article. Do they even write articles about Utah football?

To "Non-belivwe": What in the world is a non-belivwe? Or a "peoblem"? Or someone being too "righeous"?

To "Nice one cougars": "Stealing players" is really cute, especially like the cool guys at your school stole your girlfriend, right? Poaching is much better, you're just killing something that has been banned due to scarcity and endangerment. Good example.

Thanks again to each of you for brining a little more humor my way today.

GO COUGARS! 2008 looks pretty GREAT!
We play in our own Shadow | 11:13 a.m. May 30, 2008
Which would you rather have?

Undefeated season and a lame-o consolation BCS bowl, or an undefeated season and a National Championship?

23 Conference Championships, or 3 and two thirds?

One Heisman winners, or no Heisman winners?

One already inducted Hall of Fame coach and one future Hall of Fame coach (who actuall made their careers at the school, and didn't use it as a stepping stool), or no hall of fame coaches?

Don't start the brag game; that's a contest your Utes are losing badly to BYU.

Dick | 11:15 a.m. May 30, 2008
Hey Dick---Still looking for the quote?
Personal Foul ! ! | 11:14 a.m. May 30, 2008
Gross personal misconduct foul on all you guys calling hypocrisy. You have no clue what you are spouting off about. When these players' parents contacted BYU you cannot accuse BYU of hypocrisy. All indications clearly point to strict adherence by BYU to all rules including NOT recruiting missionaries. Coach Bronco has impeccable integrity so try using some of your own. Your envy of the success of BYU football is undeniable so why continue looking like fools.
Re:Get it straight | 11:16 a.m. May 30, 2008
Congrats!!!
You really did it. I hope the world doesn't come to an end like many people might think. I knew that the first reply would involve Crowton, but I am actually impressed about the Chow admission. Well done too on insulting the U while simultaneously responding to my "clamor" for something.
Next would be the challenge to find something wrong with the program or school in the Bronco era. Why don't we just try something about the school next. We have to take baby steps here.
Setting the record straight | 11:17 a.m. May 30, 2008
As a BYU fan, I'll agree that a horrible BYU team was dominated by a very mediocre Utah team during the first 40 years of the rivaly. Since then, let the record speak for itself:

BYU vs. Utah (1922-2007)
Last 10 5-5
Last 2010-10
Last 3019-11
Last 3625-11 (Since LaVell)
Last 4025-15
Last 5029-21
Overall 30-49-4*

Doesn't include the 1890's games which BYU and Utah split 3-3
missionaries | 11:17 a.m. May 30, 2008
Next time one comes to my door we are gonna talk football forget the lessons!.
Looks like a Duck | 11:18 a.m. May 30, 2008
We all know the saying its a duck. Seems mighty odd that two high school coaches just happen to run into members of the cougars staff and say their old players have interest in going to the Y. Only a cougar fan would look at this situation and say that Bronco and his team are not actively recruiting missionary players committed to other programs. That said it is this kids right to go where he wants I wish him luck. I hope the boys on the hill are now doing what ever they can to protect their LDS players serving missions.
Zoobies are kind of nerds | 11:18 a.m. May 30, 2008
While only about 1/2 of BYU students are zoobies about 1/2 of Utah students are Jerks. I am somewhere in between but would rather be a nerd than a jerk. Notice I didn't say all. Some utah fans are not jerks you just have more run ins with the ones that are.
Say What?!? | 11:20 a.m. May 30, 2008
BYU should have a form letter that states, "We'll talk only after your mission?" How stupid is that? Waiting until your mission is over to make a decision on where you'll go to school would be insane. In most cases, it will mean you would've missed application deadlines, and you would then be stuck wasting a year of your life working some dead end part time job.

Bronco already has the most honorable and yet still sensible policy when it comes to currently serving missionaries: Don't speak unless spoken to. His assistants just need to make sure they follow every intent of that policy, unlike what I think Higgins did with the Riley situation.
Anonymous | 11:27 a.m. May 30, 2008
I don't understand your logic "Cougar Dreaming".

Only 1 school has won a national championship from a Non-BCS Conference:

BYU

Not to disrespect what Boise State, Utah and Hawaii have accomplished, but I will take the National Championship over a BCS bid any day.

And to RE: Ute Fan - BYU has won the last two meetings. Utah hasn't beaten BYU since 2005, which was BYU's last bad year. You are grasping at straws because you are a BYU hater and BYU is bringing back its tradition of winning.
James Lark | 11:30 a.m. May 30, 2008
BYU & Coach Mendenhall have completely hosed James Lark.
Missing the entire point..... | 11:36 a.m. May 30, 2008
BYU haters are missing the entire point that these articles do not touch on.....and that is.....these athletes are making a choice to play for BYU....no different than making a decision to vote for Osama, Bilary, McCain! BYU is not making these young men play for BYU....they are committing to BYU to wear the Y Helmuts and kick some butt...

Thats what makes this country great......freedom to persue your dreams.......the day that football players cannot play for the schools they have dreamed about playing for....will be a very sad day indeed......If USU UNLV or Utah are not getting the recruits that you want? Then take a look at you program.....and make the changes necessary to attract the talent you deserve, because its appaernt that based on results of you recruiting ....YOU SUCK TODAY!
Idiotic comments | 11:38 a.m. May 30, 2008
Do any of you people even know what "unethical" even means? Study up on it.
It doesn't mean that when a player decides to go to a better school to improve his future (abiding by ALL rules and regulations and doing something that EVERY other school in the country has always done INCLUDING BYU) that he or the coach of the team he goes to has done something unethical.
You must all be the same kind of idiots who are going to vote for Obama to protest the fact that Romney didn't win the nomination.
Think about what you are complaining about - it doesn't make any sense - nothing wrong has been done(or even the appearance of anything wrong).
All idiots
