70100 A couple?

You know that is a good salary in Utah. Bush / McCain should go to the individuals, not the Romneys, Huntsmans, and Millers.

Alot of money

That sure is alot of money - ashame it has to go to waste. Think what Bush could have done with his time rather then just feeding himself and charging more then one year of someone's salary to eat it. What about real problem's: like the constant rising food prices and gas prices and the fact that a person's salary isn't rising to keep up with it.

Dave

Why should McCain run his campaign any different than anyone else. All the major candidates have events like this.

RE: 70100 A couple?

If you had read the whole article, you would have noticed the $500-a-person event too. While $500 is also a lot of money, it's not impossible for most people the way $70,100 is.

The thing that confuses me is that $70,100-per-couple and $10,000-per-person are even allowed under the current campaign financing rules that McCain himself put in place. I don't agree with the rules--I should be able to do anything I want with my money--but why do the normal limits not apply to events like these? I'm not criticizing, I'm just asking. Can anyone explain?

reagancon-not-neocon

Note for Dana Perino--the Church has no "needs" that they want the government's help with, though the opposite may be true. George Bush would not have made such an idiotic statement, but as we see with McClellan, the Pres. has never surrounded himself with geniuses.

Paul in MD

Someone corrected that figure in an earlier article. It should have read $70 per person, $100 for a couple.

mommadona

Well, there they go again...mixing religion, state and waaaayyyyyyy too much money for it to be a healthy relationship.

I would suggest the LDS stay out of this. Period.

Theocracies have no place in this United States, no matter how much Utah loves itself.

The other 49 of US are extremely tolerant, but no fools.

We see what's going on.

Re: mommadona

Why do the LDS have to stay out of politics, but other religions can? The other 49 are "extremely tolerant", unless Mormons involved, right? I don't quite understand, you think Bush is taking marching orders from the First Presidency? The United States is no theocracy, nor do we want it to be. I must be ignorant, please tell me what you see is "going on".

to mommadona

How in the world is that mixing religion and state??? Did Bush say he was changing laws requiring something religious? Did the LDS church try to pressure Bush into making religious laws? I don't think so. Maybe you should looking what the constitution says about church and state and not go on what most secularists "think" or want to believe it says.

You also said, "The other 49 of US are extremely tolerant, but no fools. We see what's going on."

What does that mean???? Maybe you need to get out of your house now and then and breathe some fresh air.

Gee, thanks momma

What would we ever do without your valuable insight and wisdom? Glad you can "see what's going on" while the rest of us can't. Glad to know "Utah loves itself" too. lol

You want "the LDS" to stay out of what again?

You sound pretty paranoid.

What in the world does a courtesy political visit to the LDS church have to do with Theocracy? Was LDS theocracy discussed? Hmmm, didn't read that here.

This was a political visit to raise money, pure and simple. It happens in the other 49 states too

Red Smth

Tax payers paid for Air Force 1 helicopters, cars, security, etc to transport an elected leadeder to raise $2 million yawn.

Re: mommadona

What's your point? The LDS aren't equal citizens in the United States????? The LDS shouldn't be allowed to participate in the electoral process???? What exactly is it that is going on????

Ernest T. Bass

Bush was here to raise funds for one person, at tax payer's expense.
That reeks to high heaven and is simply not right.

Nemo

Good to see that McCains Feingold Bill in action. What a farce.

Mad mama

Bush better stay in Utah and raise more money ,when the cult in Texas get thru suing Texas for taking there kids,,,They will own his ranch for another playground and he will be homeless...

Stop Complaining

This is to the guy who doesn't want Bush to do anything but sit back in the white house and come up with schemes to drop food and oil prices.

It's about time all of us in this country stopped blaming everyone but ourselves for everything that doesn't go perfectly our way.

Gas is still twice as cheap here as in Europe, and just because you can't drive your SUV 100 miles a day, and eat out every night anymore doesn't mean you have any right to complain. GO OUT AND DO YOUR PART TO MAKE THINGS BETTER! That's what America was built on. There are no free handouts in this world.

SFC RET VAN METER

To Red Smith & A lot of Money, I am LDS, but I to agee the money could have gone to a better use. However, what politician ever use commonsense?

To the naysayer of the LDS church, why is it ok for the Catholic Church and others to have visits with the President, our make statements about what is wrong in our government or the world and no one says a word agent them but when the LDS church says anything the NAY sayers go NUCLEAR? Please explain this to me?

Why is it ok for all other religions to believe in their fath and not us, (LDS)? Please explain this to me? I just dont get it why all other religions are excepted and not us.

on his way out

People.
People.
Why all the fuss?
The end is near for the most incompetent and power-hungry president this nation has ever seen. He and Cheney will not be on the November ballot.
The guy is just scrambling around for table scraps.
We'll be celebrating soon!
Victory for Obama - by a landslide.

Mike

Well, we got to give the "fat cats" their more than fair share of (not so) "free speech". Nice level political playing field, ain't it folks! Lets see, my poor man's $25 dollar "speech" against someone contributing $70,000? I wonder, who will be listened to more in the halls of power, I just wonder.
