Wow.Kudos to the Deseret News for running this story. However, why does it end like there is going to be a sequel? No final decision? No follow up? Did the judge in fact sentence Mr. Jensen to the conditions in the plea deal? When is the next movie coming out on this?

Bob G

Isn't fraud the way of Utah government? All of Utah's politicians are frauds and liars. Especially Shurtleff who should be impeached and removed from office. If the voters could impeach there would be an empty house on Capital Hill. But that option (impeachment) has been legislated out of the control of the citizens and they can no longer practice their constitutional rights of redress of those elected to position of trust in our government. Elected officials can only impeach themselves so it is an open door to fraud, waste, and abuse of powers, taxes, and state funds. Elected officials are not going to admit their wrongdoings and impeach themselves or step down as incompetent and frauds.

Looks like corruption in the highest levels of government.

I have had business dealings with Marc Jenson and know that he is dishonest and needs to spend more time behind bars. I have met 2 of his victims and know of a third and know that he took them for millions of dollars. One of which is a pension fund and his dishonesty will affect many peoples' retirements. If anyone ever deserved to go to jail it is this man. The judge is right that the plea bargain offends all sense of justice.

Shurtleff is worthless. This past Thursday he sat before a joint legislative committee and repeated multiple times that he is not interested in prosecuting immigration law violations. He's pleased with the current system where an illegal alien will be arrested, identified as illegal, and then let right back onto the streets within days, even if they're dealing Meth.

He uses his Spanish language skills to attend illegal alien rallies and tell them that he won't do anything to them, and then leads them in a chant of "S se puede" while hopping around the stage. If anyone's seen the video of Microsoft head Steve Ballmer hopping around a stage, you'll be able to picture what Shurtleff looked like at the illegal alien rally.

One Party Rule

One Party Rule brings One Party Arrogance and Corruption--just another day in the One Party State.

This makes for interesting reading, but I'm not sure it's all credible.

The main focus of the story is skewed to fit into political attacks and innuendo's of corruption in an election year.

The real story between the lines seems to be that Utah's rich and influencial are idiots. If they can be suckered by this Jensen guy out of millions for the sole reason he's in their ol' boy, RINO/MINO network, then they won't be wealthy for long.

As for the corruption and such; this is how Utah politics has always worked. There is nothing new here except the players names tend to change every decade. Behind-the-scenes backstabbing and involvement by those in higher Church positions is nothing new. Church Authorities have tried to stamp this out for a long time, but most of the time folks tend to "grow in office."

The solution to this is simple in it's concept, but difficult in action: replace the influencial with the honest. How do we find the honest? That's simple also; we just need to be honest with ourselves and neighbors about situations without fear of political correctness. PC has been a plague around here.

We reap what we sow.

Back home we would say "OH MY GOODNESS!" This plea deal is such a stinker of a deal for the victims that any reasonable thinking person would say that there was a deal cut. Is there dirt out there on Mr. Shurtleff that is being held over his head? He can say all he wants "Bring it on" but because of this deal.....it never will be. He should be ashamed of himself because he has not done his duty in this case. Thanks for a GREAT article!! It is nice to know that the Fourth Estate is doing it's job and doing it well!

Sloppy

I wondered why this story was so poorly researched and written -- wihtout a conclusion. Then I noticed it was the work product of the Calculator Reporters.

Without a spreadsheet showing how much Shurtleff has recieved in donations, these guys don't know what to do.

In the end, it sounds like Shurtleff is doing a good job under difficult circumstances.

"LDS Mission Presidents". Let's have some names and facts. That is really a cheap shot.

If it

looks like a duck, walks like a duck, smells like a duck, its a duck. I think any reasonable person can see the corruption and influence from the AG's office. Just another reason why I won't be voting for Mr. Shurtleff next time he runs for AG.

Anonymous

The more light you shine on the AG, the more rats scurry to hide. Some folks think Shurtleff is a crook & some folks know he is a crook. If he were an AG in any other state-He'd been fired or indicted long ago.

No need to wait for voters to kick Mark Shurtleff out of office - there are to many ignorant sheep out there that will just vote the party line. Just IMPEACH MARK SHURTLEFF for such actions!

Shurtleff "fights" for what is right? Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy...!

Wow

This is really gritty. White collar criminals are crafty.

Tumbleweed

When you read this whole article, you start to think "much ado about nothing," but it's a great headline for the anti-GOP media to use to try to get voters to question Mark's integrity before the election. Mark is a man of integrity and has to consider prosecution with allegations like this. However, he also has to consider the strength of the testimony of the accusers. If their testimony is weak, or if the defendant made disclosures of the risks to the investors (we don't get ANY of the language from any of the contracts, if any, signed by the investors and the defendant purportedly disclosing the risks in this article), then it could be the case is weak and should have been plea bargained. AGs can't please everybody, but they are seldom as tough, honest, hard-working and representative of the people's values as Mark Shurtleff is.

MP's?

The Church weighed in? I thought they stayed out of local politics.

Nothing New

No one who has ever worked directly with Shurtleff will be surprised by this story. He claims there was pressure from both sides - but the plea agreement shows which side swayed him.

What does the prosecutor who Reed replaced have to say about any of this???

Dave

Shirtleff is a crusader. He buys up on any story that gets sold to him and acts on it. There is so much fraud and organized crime in this state it is just sickening.

quid pro quo

Perhaps Shurtleff and Hatch didn't discuss Jenson specifically, but they still could have "discussed" the situation in the context of Hatch annointing Shurtleff to his Senate seat upon retirement.

The situation reeks of impropriety. And for Shurtleff to imply that some of the victims were less than honorable themselves, without giving them the opportunity to address and rebut specific allegations, if he deems them to be so mitigating for Jenson, is extremely unprofessional. If they have done something provable, prosecute. Otherwise, leave the inuendo out and deal with the case at bar.

What a black eye for Shurtleff. Oughta make him start thinking about retirement.

What Justice

Thank heavens for the judge in this case, our AG should be called under the carpet on this one but by whom. He is only embarrassed that this information got out. At the very least restitution to the victims is a must, nothing less. I too have seen shoplifters get stiffer penalties, please someone make sure justice is served. This makes me absolutely sick.
