If you want ignorant folks like Cannon, vote him back. But he slips and slides too much and is just a "voter" in Congress who doesn't research anything.
Folks in the District need to step back and get to know both candidates. They are each unique individuals. And, they'll be holding all kinds of events up and down the district.
Cannon is in trouble because those who've spent time around him don't like him. He is odd, kind of crude and erratic. That is who he is. That is why the delegates have turned on him.
Chaffetz is kind of arrogant. That has always been his achilles heel. But, he is smart and articulate. He needs to be very careful to overplay his ultra-conservative card. Most 3rd CD voters are conservative but not extreme.
It is an interesting choice. It is part of American democracy. Disregard the staffers, meet the candidates and make your own choice.
Jo Mamma, what are the significant bills Cannon has passed?
And don't be too hard on Mathison, because until the Republicans get control of congress back, which is looking like it could be decades away, Mathison is the most powerful Utahn there is when it comes to things at the federal level, for better or for worse.
Dan surveyed democrats, independents, republicans in a race where only republicans can vote. I'm guessing the republican sample size in 3rd district was around 100.
Does Dan Jones stand behind this reporting of the poll?
Buried somewhere on page 2 paragraph 5 Cannon leads among likely Republican voters by 15%.
Does Bob Bernick stand behind the headline?
since when Cannon'sis a 15 point lead "tight"?
BBKing's job is to make up inflamatory, untrue crap and put it out online to distract from the REAL issues. This is Cannon's MO for every single election. And sadly, it has always worked in the past. Don't be fooled.
No one has to say anything bad about Cannon- a simple google serach will tell you everything you might want to know- the good, bad and the really, really ugly. You won't read about that stuff locally because his brother owns this press but the National news is full of information about the ethically challenged incumbent.
Google for yourself- just becareful and make sure to put REP in the title. Apparently there is a Chris Cannon who is some sort of porn star- found that one out the hard way! OOPS!
Another thing to consider, all you that say "throw him out and start over"...Our government has problems. The blame for that cannot be heaped upon the shoulders of one man (or one party for that matter). What we need is less government and more power to the people. Sending Chafetz (who DOES NOT even LIVE in the 3rd District) would not be a problem fixer. His learning curve would come at a very inopportune time and prove to be very problematic for fixing our country's issues.
Congressman Cannon is on the right track and will continue to do everything he can to bring viable solutions to fix our government, and help correct our economic tribulations (i.e. gas and food prices...OUCH!). I think it is important that we keep Cannon in office.
With all due respect: your attitude about not caring about past employees is naive. When interviewed for a job, the employer must take into consideration the relationship and character of the potential hiree of his past employment. I have heard from the inside also of Chaffetz inability to either get along or be as effective as he would imply to the voter while in the Huntsman group, and with other jobs! That cannot be ignored. To ignore ones past working history is foolish.
Ditto to: Cleary Decided!; And let me add: Chaffetz has another rediculous plan for earmarks. His solution? Have each earmark be its own bill. What does that prove? --Doesn't get rid of the earmark, just changes the look and grossly clogs the system with more paper work, increasing the bureaucratic load for processing each stupid bill. Good one! Cannon's solution? What he's already doing: TRANSPERANCY. Chaffetz claimed Cannon has pork earmarks. I checked. Wrong. Earmarks aren't bad unless they are wasteful. His were for city infrastructer like watermains. That's pork?!
To C. Jones: Send a message: Yeah that we haven't read bills and Utah is stupid? Not! It's Cannon. Look up the record.
And what on earth did he mean when he said
"WE NEED TO DE-DEMONIZE SOCIALISM"
at the Lincoln Day Dinner?
He's a socialist! that's what.
What's going to happen when Chaffetz starts to get some name recognition? What happens when his message gets out there more broadly? Cannon better hope people don't like what Chaffetz has to say. It seems to me that Cannon is in a lot of trouble if this is the best he can do against a so-called no-name candidate.
To For the Record: your point about past co-workers is interesting. Everyone has co-workers they worked well with and co-workers they didn't. Do you only listen to the co-workers who have negative things to say? Because if that's the case, Cannon's got a closet full as well. Sounds like you've got a lot of work to do if that's going to be the basis of your vote.
What work has Cannon done? The People he represents or the lobby groups that fund his campaign that do not reside in Utah? He's no conservative if he's rubberstamping Bush's big government policies (NCLB for example). He's had a chance to stand up to real principles but he has not.
Cannon is consistently ranked as one of the top conservatives in Congress. Socialism and Conservatism are opposing philosophies, ergo Cannon isnt a socialist. Furthermore oratory skill doesnt equate to effectiveness especially in Congress. I understand wanting someone that motivates and inspires you, someone that makes you feel good about America and what they are doing. The danger in that is well illustrated in Obama, you get someone that speaks well and is very charismatic but wrong on pretty much everything. Ill take the guy moving us in the right direction any day of the week over the feel good guy.
What has Cannon done? Hes working to allow us to utilize our oil shale to help solve our current energy crisis and strengthen Utahs economy. Hes working to stop illegal immigration by building the fence and creating laws help us identify illegals and punish companies that flagrantly hire them. Hes saved us from having taxes placed on our internet usage the way they are on our phone bills. Hes working with other members of congress on ways legislatively to strengthen the dollar. Hes working on keeping pornography out of our state in every way he can. Next to Jim Hansen hes been one of the most effective congressmen this state has had in recent history. I could go on and on and on about what Chris has done and is doing for us. I would apply the same question to Chaffetz. What has he done?
I don't think anyone who wants to literally remake America's population can in ANY sense be considered a "conservative." Conservatism isn't about where you stand on particular policy points: 1 point for cutting taxes, 1 point for free enterprise, and so on. Conservatism is an attitude and a sentiment.
What's conservative? A belief that a people and their culture, not land, most define a nation. Look at Australia, New Zealand, the USA: we are all more culturally and politically similar to the Europe our ancestors came from than to the aboriginal cultures that existed prior to 1492 or 1607, and we have been that way since day one of settlement. Replace the current American people with a different people and you get a different culture, a different economy, and a different political outlook - in one case, Latin American radicalism instead of Anglo-Saxon democracy.
I wouldn't call Cannon a conservative. I would call him a neofeudalist - slash taxes on the rich, slash labor costs (ala serfdom), oppose unions and minimum wage laws, and then watch as the middle class strains under the yoke.
I applaud Jason for promoting this issue.
He is so foul. Hateful. Ornery. Crude.
Remember when Merrill Cook was blasted for swearing on an airplane? Chris Cannon makes Cook look a choirboy.
Slash taxes on the rich- why should rich people pay more taxes? Are they any more citizens than anyone else? If not they should they be taxed improportionally? No!
minimum wage/unions- The market ultimately decides how much a service is worth. If anyone can do something it isnt worth as much, if only a few can do it then its worth more. The only thing minimum wage does is increase inflation which hurts the value of our dollar which is tanking our economy. Further it robs people of their right to pay a fair market value for services rendered. Unions only really create more barriers to doing business. Those additional costs arent absorbed by businesses they are passed along to us. So in the end game you are again only inflating the prices of goods which isnt good.
So to sum up your point, you favor Socialism. Socialism hurts more than it helps, further enflames inequality, and has never worked.
I am amazed that some people can be so elitist. It is not so easy to identify illegal immigrants from legal, so what happens is a lot of finger pointing and stereotyping. It's accusations like that that argue that all immigrants should speak our language. If we look to many of our first generations in America they probably didn't speak english either. However the second generation has always been able to adapt to the language, laws, and customs very well.
The principles should be upheld and that is why the second generation should not be accountable for the first.
I guess in comparison to Chaeffetz and in response to "what has he done," I would say that Cannon and Chaeffetz are tied in the number of important pieces of legislation they have gotten passed in Congress (at zero). But Chris has had 12 years to get something done, while this would be Jason's first crack at things. I guess Chris does have a significant lead in open-foot-insert-mouth moments, so that's something.
Try Russel Skousen. He was a Cabinet level secretary for John Huntsman for the first year. He is the one who is the "source" that is so baseless.
As for them not supporting Chaffetz it is not because of his liberal v conservative views. It is because he was so entirely ineffective. He was mean, petty, stab people in the back and walk all over them. It reached a point where because of how he treated people Huntsman faced a small revolt: Either Jason left or several of them would leave. Huntsman fired Jason Chaffetz.
And Jason is very liberal. Russel Skousen will also tell you that in Cabinet meetings, when issues would come up Jason would almost always push the liberal policy, while others would push conservative policies.
There is absolutely NO evidence that Jason is conservative, other than campaign rhetoric.
And Australia will come out. Whether during the primary or in the general. And when it does the voters of Utah are going to be pretty sheepish. The media already has the story.
The moment Cannon beat Jacob Mrs Scott began recruiting anyone to run. She found Jason.
Is that best you can do? And the best part is, it is more evidence of how the I-hate-Chris-Cannon crowd work. If it sounds good, say it. It sounded good for Chaffetz to talk about his concentration/focus/detention camps, so he says it. Sounded great for the right-wing delegates. Now he's backpeddaling like it's an Olympic sport.
You people claim that Cannon supports Open Borders yet he has voted to put up over 1,000 miles of fence and barriers. He has voted for thousands of new Border Patrol agents. He has voted for the e-Verify program. He has voted for all of these tough measures you folks scream for, but it isn't enough.
This isn't about fact or reason. It isn't about logic or understanding of the realities of an elected government. This is about emotion and name calling. It is about screaming the other people down until they submit to your will.
No spin, I do not work for Cannon in any way. I am a conservative Republican, former delegate tired of the right-wing games. Time to look at facts not rhetoric.
Apparently few have spent anytime in D.C.
I used to work there and got to know the Washington LDS community pretty well. There are alot of prominent Mormons in the Bush Administration, Capitol Hill, the think tanks and lobbyists.
Everyone considers Cannon a joke. His weird statements have killed his credibility. He is considered an embarrassment by most.
Remember the Clinton impeachment? Bill Clinton commits perjury. What does Cannon do? Talks to the national media about how it is all a plot to spread the acceptance of certain sexual practices.
Then, there was the bit when he claimed to have made a deal to get rid of Al Gore.
Or, the time he blamed the pages for Mark Foley's solicitations of teenage males.
Sure. Cannon has been in Congress for awhile. But, he'll never be a significant player. I overheard one of his House Resources Committee colleagues call him one of the biggest bozos on the Hill. That is why he has so little in his legislative record. That is why he gets the pro-forma stuff like a letter from the President rather than a visit.
Utah, have some pride. Send Cannon home.
Chaeffetz is pretty low about how he handles all of this. And his campaign will stoop to any level in order to win. So now it is anonymous LDS members, staffers, White House, etc blasting Cannon.
Lies, dang lies then Jason Chaeffetz.
And now we are back to the real focus of this entire campaign seasion: We-hate-Chris-Cannon. That is all that matters here for so many.
I would embarrassed if I were the challenger. And I'm glad to read he is behind by 15 percentage points. Last thing we need is that kind of a new congressman.
Just to skip to the chase let's just have a contest as to who hates Chris Cannon the most. And while you rocket scientists are tripping over yourselves to win that the rest of us will help a good Congressman win reelection.
You Cannon haters are the exact reason why good people don't run for office or even get involved. How do some of you even look yourselves in the mirror!?
It doesn't say that, EXACTLY. There is that little clause in there about "subject to the jurisdiction thereof." In fact, for several decades after the amendment was passed it was not interpreted to grant automatic citizenship to any and all born on US soil. Who are we to suggest that the folks who actually made the amendment a law didn't know what they meant?
Media has it and it will come out. If Jason wins the primary and it comes out in the fall the Democrat will likely win. Or we will have another 5 hour cry-a-thon press conference as he resigns office.
It is your job as a citizen to learn who your representatives are. Not their job to knock on your door and introduce themselves. Do you know who you state legislator is? Your state senator? Your city councilmember? School board member? State school board member? County council member is? Is that Chris Cannon's fault as well?
Or are you waiting to have them knock on your door next?
Seriously, people have a responsibility here as well. It is good you are finally paying attention but I assure you, that is not Chris Cannon, John Huntsman, Orrin Hatch, George Bush or any one elses fault.
Please, find a better case to make for your vote in this election.
If there was a problem while he was working at Nu Skin, why did the chair of Nu Skin donate $2000 to support him running. I noticed Hunstman Corp on the list of donors as well. Any donations over $200 are public. There are some really sharp people on the list.
People that are worrying about the Democrat winning should look at the poll. Jason does as well as Chris against the BYU alum Democrat.
Fire the Cannon, vote for Jason.

I don't mind finding someone better than Cannon, but let's be real: Chaffetz would be a step back.
